Advantages / Disadvantages of 10gAS over Forms Server 6i

Hi gurus,
Is there any document/ links available related to advantages/disadvantages of Oracle 10gAs over Forms Server 6i. Either it can be functional wise/ performance wise/ feature wise/ configuration wise/ any thing else.
Thanks in Advance
Justin

I don't believe so (we I certainly didn't write one!). If you go to otn.oracle.com/products/forms there are some new papers explaining the new features in each version subsequent to 6i. So in effect you can compare 6i and 10g by looking at the new features. However, support might be the biggest reason. 6i Forms is no longer supported.

  • Advantages/Disadvantages of Aperture over iPhoto '08??

Ok, so iPhoto '08 made and its web galleries feature makes me happy, and I finally migrated all my images over to iPhoto.
But I've owned Aperture since day 1, and am wondering if there is any advantage/disadvantage to converting to Aperture over iPhoto '08? I'm sitting at approximately 14,000 images in 350 events. Not huge I know.
Bascially I want to know which is faster really, but any other pros/cons is helpful.

    Tom,
is any advantage/disadvantage to converting to Aperture over iPhoto '08?
It depends on what you're trying to do. Have you watched Apple's tutorial videos?
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/resources/tutorial/
To me, the big thing that sets Aperture (and it's cousin Lightroom) apart from every other imaging tool is real-time raw conversion and non-destructive editing. iPhoto converts your raw file to a JPEG or TIFF, and you then perform adjustments on this file. So you have at least your original and your edited version as full-resolution on your disk. This has obvious disk space and undo limitations.
Aperture displays a rendered version of your raw files with the adjustments applied in real time. So if you applied too much sharpening in retrospect, you simply back off the sharpening control, and the image instantly shows the impact of the new setting. The same holds true with all the other controls. Since each adjustment starts from the original raw file, you never loose information due to clipping, rounding errors, JPEG's lossy compression, etc. It also means that there's only your original capture plus a few KB for the adjustment information on disk.
Aperture provides a much more powerful metadata system than iPhoto that can be useful for organizing and searching your photos.
That said, I use iPhoto on occasion for making greeting cards.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • What are the advantages/disadvantages of using the Form Command over Creating a User Form in VBA?

I’m in the early stages of creating a spreadsheet that will require data entry into the worksheet. The worksheet could get to 1000s of rows, depending on the particular user.
When I refer to the ‘Form Command’ I’m referring to the option of adding a Quick Access Tool bar button by selecting ‘more commands’, ‘all commands’, ‘Form…’
My questions/concerns would be relating to ‘should I develop this spreadsheet with the Form Command or a User Form in VBA?
    Concerns/Questions:
    Deployment to other users
Protecting worksheet cells so the user can only add records using the form command or the user form in vba. In other words, don’t allow users to edit cells that are not within the table structure of the sheet or add rows if they’re not using the form
    Data validation when entering data…
    Keith
    Keith Aul

    Hi,
Both variants have pro's and cons. If you plan to use VBA you have to consider the deployment settings on other p.c.'s where you have to allow macro's where as a regular form doesn't have the need for that.
That said the userform gives you much more control because the form command is not saved. it is simply a temporary form which you have to setup every time. It's perfect for data entry. If you are looking for data validation the userform is the one to go
for. You also have the possibility to work on placements of the data entry.
So if you are looking for speed and simplicity then go for the form command. If it is handling control you are after I'd go for a userform.

  • Advantages and Disadvantages of using Nintex forms. is this product useful?

So my company has decided to start developing using Nintex products, we initially had Nintex Workflow and now they are thinking of purchasing Nintex forms. and i was asked to start trying it out.
I am currently midway through the development of a sharepoint app and i really like the REST APIs available in sharepoint 2013 as they enable me to develop using javascript and HTML5, quite basic stuff but very powerful.
Now they are asking me to try this black boxed product out, so i have to waste a couple of days on this...
I watched a couple of youtube videos and all they brag about is how easy it is to drag and drop components on the screen and visually design a form when this is the feature i care about the least. To me what counts most is how easy it would be to customize
the form to do something that was not foreseen in the black box product.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using Nintex forms over using Javascript/HTML 5/Sharepoint REST ?
    many thanks

With a developer hat on, I can appreciate that custom solutions can potentially be easier to build and manipulate, as you are not adopting anyone's framework and may have less constraints building with a blank canvas each time.
With a business owner or business analyst hat on, there are many advantages for using a product or application to build repeatable solutions such as forms.
SharePoint can quickly fall into demise if users (end user or super user) have free reign to build and deploy custom solutions, as they may or may not follow a consistent build pattern, and even other super users or developers can have difficulties interpreting
and adopting solutions, should someone (such as yourself) leave an organisation.
This is where products can provide significant return on investment. Products such as Nintex are built by experts in more than HTML, REST and JavaScript, but SharePoint as well. They provide a framework which ensures Form and Workflow designers follow a consistent
approach, and each solution can quickly be viewed and interpreted by other users.
Data gathering (forms) and workflow are also usually repeatable and work. I.e. in most organisation you need more than one of each. Products targeted to repeatable tasks are more efficient and accurate than custom code solutions and follow a more consistent
and defined approach in building t
Product solutions are continually developed and enhanced - which can be applied to existing creations. E.g. if Nintex Forms deploy an upgrade, all existing forms now have this functionality. There is no manual code updates required. That, and they are also
    supported.
There is definitely a place for custom development in SharePoint, but for the purposes of quickly repeatable solutions such as forms & workflow, there should be a decent amount of analysis into requirements before taking the custom route.

  • Advantage and disadvantage of view over physical table

    Hi,
Can you explain me Advantage and disadvantage of view over physical table

    Hi Nitin,
A view can be thought of as either a virtual table or a stored query. The data accessible through a view is not stored in the database as a distinct object. What is stored in the database is a SELECT statement. The result set of the SELECT statement forms
the virtual table returned by the view. A user can use this virtual table by referencing the view name in Transact-SQL statements the same way a table is referenced.
For more information about the advantages and disadvantages of views in SQL Server, please refer to the following two articles:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of SOAP over Http

    Hi!
Can any one explain about advantages and disadvantages of SOAP over HTTP.
    Thanks
    Sreenath

    Hi,
Yes you can use RMI to communicate to your soa suite server allthough i could not get it to work from weblogic 10.3, there is a conflict with certain other libraries. From any other 10.1.3 oracle application server there should not be any problem. The biggest advantage of RMI over SOAP is performance. The soap client also generates lots of logging which can not be disabled, ... i already logged a bug on that. The advantage of SOAP over RMI is its underlying HTTP protocol which is, in some cases, the only protocol allowed by network engineers to pass through firewalls.

  • What are the advantages/disadvantages of using PS/CS5 in 64bit over 32bit please?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of using PS/CS5 in 64bit over 32bit please?

From a practical perspective, besides the 64 bit version being a bit faster at just about everything, limitations on document size are lifted in the 64 bit version.  Essentially, how much can do is limited only by how much RAM you have installed in your system.  You can do things like have larger documents, deeper history, etc. and have it all work quickly.
On the other hand, many 3rd party plug-ins, especially older ones, only provide 32 bit versions, which will only run in 32 bit Photoshop.
Both 32 and 64 bit versions are installed by default.  It's important to note that most of the preferences are separate between the two, so you can have two slightly different setups that might help with specialty operations you might need.  This gets pretty subtle, but for example I keep the 32 bit version configured with only 1 cache level, so all previews of high bit depth images are always composited in high bit depth.  This aids me with some aspects of astroimage processing.  It's slower, but more accurate.  By contrast I have more cache levels configured for my 64 bit version, so that's faster for general photography work.

  • Advantage of SAP Script over Smart forms

    Hi Friends,
Can you please let me know some ten points on Advantages of SAP Scripts over Smart Forms.
    Thanks,
    Gokul

    Hi Gokul,
Major Differences between smart form and Scripts are
Multiple page formats are possible in smartforms which is not the case of SAP Scripts
It is possible to have a smartform without a main window
Labels cannot be created in smartforms.
Routines can be written in smartforms tool.
Smartforms generates a function module when activated
Background graphics are possible in case of SMARTFORMS
Assigning the font colours to the text are not possible in the case SMARTFORMS.
Creating and maintaining SMARTFORMS requires half the time compared to SAP Scripts
    Smart Forms                                           SAP Scripts
1)Form, Text Module, Styles are          Form, So10 are
    client independent                             client dependent
2)In a form diff pages can have         In a form all pages should
different page formats                      follow one page format

    Hi
Other then the previous reply,In simplest word we can say --now we have two way to admin the content in the landscape.
1.If we want to do it off-line the we can do form Visual admin( works well because after modification we start the server for changes takes place)
    2. Form NWA we can do all administration with indicative navigation (quite frustrating in visual tool ) and no need to start /restart the surver

  • Forms 10g: error FRM-92101: There was a failure in the Forms Server during

AS10g (9.0.4.1) on windows 2000 with 2 GB of ram
We have an application with 10 - 15 users. Sometimes, when users exit from forms with the command exit_form, in a randomic way the form hangs with the error FRM-92101: There was a failure in the Forms Server during startup.....
After the users have to close the browser and open another sessione of explorer.
In the same time other users work fine.
The problem happens more then 10 times a day.
    Is there a solution ?

I have also run into similar problem.
In my case, this problem has been carried over from Forms 6i to Forms 10g. In forms 6i it wrote an error file in the same folder where *.fmx file was stored.
For 10gAS, look into <ORACLE_HOME midtier>\forms90\trace folder for a file *.trc. Open it up in notepad. It will tell you which trigger was being executed when the form failed.
Put any comment in the PL/SQL of that trigger, recompile the form and the problem will go away.
    I usually put something like:
    dummy statement for FRM-92101.
I do not know why it works but in my case it has.
    Good luck !!!
Would like to know if it works for you.

  • Confused about the 11g R2 Forms Server and using SSL

    All,
I just installed the 11g R2 Forms Server software without configuring it.
I then ran the config.sh script to configure it which creates a weblogic server domain.
I'm a bit confused now. If I run opmnctl status command I get the following:
    Processes in Instance: frmrep_inst_1
    --------------------------------------------------------------+---------
    ias-component | process-type | pid | status
    --------------------------------------------------------------+---------
    emagent_frmrep_inst_1 | EMAGENT | 28279 | Alive
    RptSvr_eiaorapptest_frmrep_ins | ReportsServerComp~ | 28124 | Alive
    ohs1 | OHS | 27831 | Alive
This looks to me like there is an Oracle Http Server installed.
Is the Oracle Http Server answering web calls when I run forms or is the Weg Logic Server answering the call?
Also, the Oracle Forms Installation Documentation talks about securing your environment with Oracle Identity Manager but we are not using Oracle Identity Manager. I want to use SSL but I'm not sure how to secure the environment with SSL. Do I need to configure the WebLogic server to use SSL or the OHS?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Fusion Middleware 11.1.x does include HTTP Server (OHS) and also requires WLS. Both HTTP Server and WLS are http listeners, amongst other things. So whether WLS handles a request or HTTP Server does it will be entirely up to you and/or the end-user.
OHS has a listener which by default (in FMw) listens for requests on port 8888. On the other hand WLS_FORMS is preconfigured to listen on port 9001.
This means that if your URL looks like the following, WLS_FORMS will directly answer the client:
    <blockquote>http://server:9001/forms/frmservlet?form=abc</blockquote>
If the URL looks like the following, the HTTP Server will reply:
    <blockquote>http://server:8888/forms/frmservlet?form=abc</blockquote>
The request path when using OHS as the listener to call Oracle Forms would look like this:
    <blockquote>CLIENT --- OHS --- WLS_FORMS --- FORMS SERVLET --- FORMS RUNTIME (frmweb.exe) --- DATABASE</blockquote>
The request path when using WLS_FORMS as the listener to call Oracle Forms would look like this:
    <blockquote>CLIENT --- WLS_FORMS --- FORMS SERVLET --- FORMS RUNTIME (frmweb.exe) --- DATABASE</blockquote>
Although removing OHS from the path would seem to be better because it is one less server to administer and less system resources consumed, generally it would be argued that the advantages of having it will outweigh the disadvantages.
There are numerous advantages to use OHS in front of WLS, but the most obvious should be that OHS can be set up so that you have one and only one entry point into your FMw environment. In other words, even though for example Forms WLS listens on 9001 and Reports on 9002 and some other app on 9999, all requests can be routed through a single OHS port (e.g. 8888). This gives added security since only one port would need to be open assuming a firewall was in place. This configuration is also helpful when calling one application from another. For example when calling Reports from Forms. If you use OHS, references to other WLS managed servers can be called with a relative reference rather than a fully qualified one.
Regarding whether or not SSL needs to be enabled at any particular point in the path is entirely up to you. You can enable SSL from the client all the way back to the db or any where in between. It is fairly common to see SSL between the client and OHS then no SSL to WLS. But if security is a great concern then you may want to consider SSL from front to back. However, keep in mind that SSL comes at a price. Performance will degrade slightly when SSL is enabled.
Also, OAM (Oracle Access Manager) has nothing to do with SSL. SSL refers to traffic encryption. OAM is for authentication - single sign on.
Consider reviewing the Forms Deployment Guide as well as the other Fusion Middleware documents referenced within it.
    <blockquote>http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E24269_01/index.htm</blockquote>
Finally, and most important, this topic really has nothing to do with Oracle Forms. This is more about how a web server or its environment works.

  • How to improve performance of Oracle Forms Server ?

Recently we converted our Application which was Developed in Forms 5.0 and Reports 3.0 into Forms6i to host that on to Web. We also loaded ORACLE 9iAS (on Windows NT 4 with service pack 3) from "Enterprise Edition" option by selecting Oracle Database Cache, Forms Server and Reports Server, HTTP Server(on port 80),Oracle Web Cache. Everything loaded succesfully including Caches.
Forms server is working perfectly and we were able to run our Application in Browser, but performance is the issue. We thought the caches will improve the performance, but it seems they are not at all working. When we run a report or form the Database cache is not giving any statistics whether a particular Query is a Hit or Miss though the cache is running. We got a doubt and searched in FAQ's and we found the following questions.
    Oracle9iAS Web Cache Frequently Asked
    Questions February 2001
Does Oracle9iAS Web Cache work with applications that use Oracle9iAS Forms?
Not in the 1.x release of Oracle9iAS. Integration between Oracle9iAS Web Cache and Oracle9iAS Forms will be addressed at a future date.
    Oracle9iAS Database Cache
Does the Cache work with Oracle Forms and Portal in Oracle9i AS?
Since Oracle Forms and Portal utilize read/write PL/SQL stored procedures, these components cannot take advantage of the Cache. This support is being considered for a future version.
After coming to know that Caches doesnot boost the performance of Oracle Forms and reports. We have the following queries.
    1) Clarify whether the above are True.
    2) Apart from DB and Web Cache is there any other way where in we can improve the performance of Oracle Forms and Reports in Forms Server including the start up time.
    3) What is the ideal configuration required for each tier (iAS Server,Database Server and Client) to host Forms on to Web considering our application as Medium scale.
    (Presently our configuration are,
Application Server Configuration : Windows NT 4 with service pack 3,256 MB RAM,1 GB Virtual memory and 4GB free space and almost the same configuration is being used for
    Database Configuration.
Client Configuration : Windows 98 with 64MB RAM).
    4) Is there any way to track the performance and know the problem areas like TRACE.
    Gopi Kumar
    null

A couple of questions for you:
    1) What version of IAS are you using?
    2) What's the version of Forms&Reports and
    3) What version of patch are you using if any
    for forms&Reports?
    4) What applications are you running on the
    machine where Forms&Reports is installed?
    (I mean non-Oracle applications?)
The problem could be that, the base addresses
of the DLL's in Forms&Reports could be having base address conflicts with some other application's DLL's.
Forms and Reports needs to be fully rebased to achieve full performance on NT. Before release of Forms and Reports, Oracle rebases all DLLs. Rebasing assigns unique base addresses to all of the DLL's in use by an executable. A properly based DLL will load at its preferred base address, greatly improving the efficiency of memory utilization and the runtime performance of the executable.
Multiple utilities are available on NT to verify proper rebasing of DLLs. HandleEx v4.0 is one such freeware from Sysinternals and is available at www.sysinternals.com. Some others are "depends.exe" that's part of the MS Visual Studio or msinfo32.exe that comes with Office 2000 on NT.
If after running any of these utilities you discover that the DLL's ar not properly rebased, you need to contact Oracle worldwide support.
If you find that rebasing is not the problem, then please post your feedback again. Hope this helps.
