Advantages of FCE HD over iMovie HD (with Sony HDR HC3)?

Hi!
I'm new to the digital Video world. Sadly I'm always a bit crazy and thought to buy a camera which will be a bit more future proof and decided to go for a Sony HDR HC3. I was using iMovie 6 HD with it and can import movies fine (ok not full speed on my 2Ghz iMac G5 but I can live with that), I can cut them but I can't realy render them as normal movies out of iMovie. Actually I can't do anything with them it always turns out to be a very bad jerky output format. So reading the iMovie forum, it seems thats normal behavior. People say it needs to be sent back on camera tape and get it converted by the camera to DV and then use it. Actually importing DV and then writing a DVD or encoding it to an other fileformat really works well.
So my question is, can FCE HD handle HDV better? Like export it to normal DVD? Meaning like rendering the 1440 x 1080 interlaced to the DVD non interlaced resolution?
iMovie shows me the Project is 1080i-25 (yes I'm using PAL). So I asume it merges the two half pictures to one 1080 and that results in 25 frames/sec...
Any experiance with FCE and Sony HC3 here? Roughly 300 Euros/$300 is a bit too much to buy it and it turns out to be not much of a difference then iMovie (for exporting and handling HDV).
Thanks for your help and feedback!
Holger

Hi!
The reason why I ask is some weired behavior I have with IMovie 6 HD/Quicktime 7 on the latest Tiger release:
I can import HDV from my Sony HC3 perfectly, and also export every unedited material to the camera perfectly. But when the HD material needs to recoded for use on DVD or as quicktime movie or just when you add titles effects etc. Output is getting very jerky.
To test I did the following. I recorded a 360 degrees turn in a room in HDV. It shows perfectly smooth on the camera screen when playbacked, smooth on TV etc. Smooth means as you see it when turning your head..
So now I import it in HDV into iMovie. If i take the unedited film and want it to export it to any other format like DVD or an MPEG4 movie, things get jerky, the 360 degrees turn doesn't look nice anymore.
I read in other forums, that thats in issue with HDV and you should let the camera convert it to DV, so the cuted material needs to be transfered back to the camera, and then let it convert it to DV.
OK, so if I import HDV converted by the camera to DV its perfectly smooth, also on DVD on quicktime movies etc.
When I import HDV in iMovie, and put a title text in the movie for like 10 secs out of the 20. iMovie will split the clip to two 10 sec ones and render the text in the first block. If I record it back as HDV on the camera tape and then reimport it with beeing converted as DV the following happens:
The first 10 secs with the title are jerky, the second 10 secs are smooth as before.
This needs to be related with the IMovie/Quicktime encoding, not with the camera (I have two of it to see if its not the hardware). So I'm really thinking It's either an iMovie problem an Quicktime problem or both together...
So if FCE would handle the rendering process different... It would be worth to get it...
Any ideas?

  • Canon HV10 or Sony HDR-HC3 for iMovie HD 6

    In case you're interested…
I'm in the process of reviewing both the Canon HV10 and the Sony HDR-HC3. Both use Mini DV tapes. I've heard hard disk models don't work with iMovie HD6.
I've tried both on my Intel iMac at 2.16 Gz and this is what happened…
    Sony HC3
I used Firewire cable (must be Firewire - Sony calls it iLink) and plugged in the cam with iMovie already opened. Clicked to the camera icon and… Nothing happened. There was no recognition of the camcorder at all. Zilch. I fiddled, checked the camcorder's audio was set to 16bit and changed several prefences in iMovie but still nothing. I had previously set the cam's time too. I've since learned the HC3 and many other Sony's are incompatible with iMovie HD. It's a lovely camcorder but unless you download some extra software – as mentioned in the forums – it ain't gonna work.
    Canon HV10
Performed the same Firewire connections and, lo, the camcorder was detected and I was able to begin importing HD visuals. But then… On immediate playback after importing I noticed the audio was running at half speed – subtley – the visuals too. I spent hours shooting short bits, importing them with other settings, and every time voices came out low and slurred. My wife sounded like a bloke. I posted the problem here and someone told me the HD takes a long time to render. So bear that in mind. And don't be impatient like me.
In this instance, the Canon wins.

I'm really confused now. I've set the HC3's settings to HDV (not Auto) and the iLink Conv to OFF. And still no joy. I've even tried 'Magic Movie' for which it searched for a camera but found nothing. I know the Firewire cable works because I've used it on the Canon and my own, older Digital-8 Sony Handycam.

  • How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?

How to import and edit a 3D video made with Sony HDR-TD10E camcorder, with .MVC file?
    I have PremierePro-CS5 installed.
This stereo 3D camcorder (Sony HDR-TD10E), output an .MVC (MultiViewCoding) file, coded in H.264 format.
This format is already compatible with Bluray3D stereoscopic format.
    1) But, how to edit the .MVC in Premiere?
    2) What plugin should I use (if exists) for PremiereProCS5?
    3) Cineform Neo3D, can manage the .MVC format? Can convert it to Cineform format file, for import it into Premiere?
    4) What software should I use to convert an .MVC video to an AVCHD H.264 file, and import it into PremierePro CS5 or CS5.5 for editing?
    Thanks!

Sorry, I am Italian, it is very difficult for me to understand what he says!
I can just read the english text, or follow the actions of a videotutorial!
Thus my question is the same:
    -What software can do that?
-Sony Vegas 10 do the Bluray3D authoring?
-For MVC editing, should I wait for Adobe CS6? Or is it planned an update for CS5.5?

  • Sony HDR-HC3 no longer works in iMovie 08 under Leopard

    Hello all,
Prior to my upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5, I had been using iMovie to import from my Sony HDR-HC3 mini DV camera without any difficulty - building a library of video from my rehearsals so that I can prepare doctoral audition DVDs.
Now, since upgrading to Leopard, it no longer works. Has something changed? Using the same hardware, connections, and settings, and choosing either 'large' or 'full' to import from 1080i on the camera, and trying automatic or manual, and connected via iLink as usual, it starts the camera properly, but when you play the tape no video shows on the Mac - when using Automatic it will shortly stop, rewind as if it found the end of the tape, and gives an error beep but no messages.
Any advice? Any known issues that I haven't found?
    Cheers,
    Aaron

As indicated, I've tried both manual and auto, and I had always used both before - now neither work.
Are you controlling the camcorder manually also and do you specify a specific output (and if you do, did you follow instructions and pull the FW cable to force the change to take affect)?

  • Anyone have an iMovie made with Sony N1 footage?

    Hi,
I'm considering the Sony N1 and want to know how good the movie mode is on that camera.
Have any of you made or seen an iMovie made with N1 clips?
    Thanks!

    Hi Sue,
Thank you for taking the time to post your reply. I'll check out Streamclip.
I definitely know a digicam isn't ideal, but lugging one device around is way easier and worth the hit in quality.
I thought I'd mention that I've been dragging and importing clips from my Canon A85 and SE K700i into iMovie 6 with no issues whatsoever. Sound and video are both fine.
Oddly, that's not the same with my Sony DSC P200. Those clips only play video, but no sound.
    I'm stumped.

  • Sony HDR-HC3 1080i imports out of sync to iMovie

My old DV camcorder imported into iMovie 6.0.2 just fine. Have just bought the new SONY HDR-HC3E HDV handycam - component set to 1080i/576i and HDV/DV converter set to off.
Created new iMovie project and selected video format HD 1080i. iMovie sees the camera okay but when i press play control or import control, iMovie tells me it is previewing or importing iMovie content at 1/2 or 3/4 speed. Picture in iMovie window is clearly moving slower than picture on camcorder screen. When i press pause or stop and review clip that has been imported into iMovie it plays back with the sound out of sync. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi kosmo
    Most obvious thought.
    - is Your Camera set to 12-bit sound or does it have LP/EP mode (long/extended) that
records more minutes on a standard tape than normal play.
    - should be 16-bit sound and SP (standard play) mode.
If this is relevant to Your situation !

  • [Help Request] Log and Transfer with Sony HDR-SR10

    Hello Everyone,
I am very new to Final Cut Express and I am trying to import the clips from my camera (Sony HDR-SR10) to Final Cut. Here are the settings that I have for FCE and the camera:
    *Easy Setup*
    Format: Apple Intermediate Codec
    Rate: (all rates)
    Use: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60
+settings found in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9162394)+
    *Camera Settings*
HD FH (AVC HD 16M (FH)
Then I mount the camera on the desktop. Then File > Log and Transfer. However, no clips appear in the viewer. I have tried adding a folder to the Log and Transfer window, but no clips show up. I have about 30gb of footage on my camera, so it's not like the camera is blank or something.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Jon

    Jonathan,
    In addition to Tom's advice...
I have an SR-11 which I believe is nearly identical to your's. Do you have any SD video on your camera? If you do you may have to erase these clips. When I first started using FCE, I had to get rid of any SD footage I had before FCE would display my HD clips in the Log and Transfer window. Fortunately I only had a couple of test clips in SD, so erasing them wasn't a big deal. I don't know why this happens, but since I only shoot in HD mode I never looked into in further.
Additionally insure your playback mode is set for HD and not SD (I don't have my camera with me right now, but if I remember correctly there is a selection in one of the menus for this).
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Final cut Express: compatibility with Sony HDR-SR1 AVC HD new codec

Does anyboday know when Final Cut Express will be able to support the new AVCHS format used by the latests Sony HDR-SR1 AVC HD 30GB Hard-Disc camcorder? I'm hesitant to buy the camcorder until I know that apple will support this new codec. thx

This has nothing at all to do this with the file transfer protocol. These cameras use USB, because USB is cheaper. What you are confusing is USB support with tapeless recording systems. Macs support USB, and file transfers over USB. The FireWire/USB issue is not relevant to these formats, none of which are supported on Mac editing applications. Nothing to do with these cameras having USB or FireWire. Even if they had FireWire no editing application on a Mac would connect to them because the formats are not supported, not the transfer protocol. It's not the USB functionality that makes them non-editable on a Mac it's the formats themselves.
These are entirely consumer products for home movies, including the so-called pro-style cameras. They are designed for delivery of MPEG-2 formats, mostly DVD based. Record your movie on DVD, put your DVD in your set-top player and watch your home movie. I think all of them are MPEG-2 based. The only MPEG-2 based format you can edit on a Mac is HDV, which is a tape-based format, not a tapeless format. All HDV cameras support FireWire.
You might be able to convert the media off one the DVD discs using MPEG Streamclip or some other product. You might be able to transfer the data via USB off the hard drives built into the camera and use some other product to convert them to an editable format. None of that requires FireWire. Nor can the media in its current form be accessed from the DVD disc or from the hard drive by an editing application regardless of the connection.
If these cameras are ever supported for digital editing, then you don't need FireWire and can use USB for file transfer of the media to your computer in faster than real-time. But this is all based on tapeless digital formats that don't require real-time or less than real-time capture of digital data as you do from tape. These formats will most likely never be supported by professional video editing applications. There are already professional video solutions with tapeless recording and to date all of these support FireWire.
To say that Sony only supports iLink on past products is just plain wrong. All Sony's, Canon's, JVC's and Panasonic's professional product lines on all their upcoming cameras and decks that can file transfer over FireWire use FireWire and not USB. Some only use SDI. None use USB.

  • I filmed with Sony HDR-XR500V using HD HQ - which sequence preset is best?

I filmed on a Sony HDR-XR500V camera using the HD HQ camera setting. According to the manual, this means it's: AVCHD 9Mbps (1440x1080x60i).
I'm editing in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
Which sequence preset should I use?
    AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic
    or: AVCHD 1080i30 (60i)
I'm a bit confused, because AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic says "for editing AVCHD Formats recorded in anamorphic 1920x1080 (ex.1440x1080)."
What does "anamorphic 1920x1080 (ex.1440x1080)" mean? What does "ex." stand for? For example? Except?
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi,
Your manual tells you you have shot your film in 1440x1080 which means it has rectangular pixels which in other words it is anamorphic.
If you made these rectangular pixels into square pixels you get 1920x1080.
Full HD is 1920x1080 with square pixels. It all has to do with aspect ratio. It can be a bit confusing.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS03BF7479-8C7B-4522-8C75-210AD102524Ea.html
If you were to do it correctly your preset should be AVCHD 1080i30 (60i) Anamorphic.
    Hope this all makes sense.

  • INFO - Problems using L&T with Sony HDR-SR series cameras

In a situation where Log & Transfer worked previously but no longer does; this may be a result of using Finder to delete clips on the camera, rather than by deleting the clips using the camera's own file management tools. Deleting clips in Finder tends to mess up the folder structure on the camera.
Unfortunately, the only solution may be to save all your media files to your Mac and then clear out the camera's hard drive. The next recording on the camera should become visible in L&T.
    Frank

    Andy,
I have seen quite a few posts recently wondering why L&T would suddenly stop recognising Sony HDR-SR series cameras. As an SR12 owner myself I was curious as to the cause of the problem as I've never had an issue with L&T. So I've been looking out for relevant info on the forums.
Deleting files from outside the camera seems to mess up the directory structure needed by L&T and so is a very likely culprit.
However I haven't deliberately messed up my own camera to test the theory.

  • Unable to capture HDV with Sony HDR-FX1 in FCE 4

    Hello all,
Been using an HDR-FX1 for a while, shooting mostly DV, and today I began experimenting with HDV. I shot 8 minutes of footage with the camera in HDV mode.
When I setup FCE 4 for Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60, the capture window doesn't recognize the camera. However, if I set the FX1 to down convert to DV via firewire, FCE recognizes the camera and I'm able to capture.
How do I (or can I) capture HDV into FCE 4 with the FX1? Is there something (a setting perhaps) that I'm missing? Do I need to jump to FC Pro for this?
My system: 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 (tower), 2 GB RAM, Sony FX1, FCE 4.0, QT 7.3.1
    Thanks in advance,
    tg

I had a similar issue with iMovie08 import using HDR-HC1... You may want to try this to see if it helps:
1> Close the import app (FCE, in your case)
2> Unplug the FW cable from the camcorder (Most important step)
3> Go into the Sony menu and re-select the HDV settings (explicit HDV, not Auto + Conv off) in the camcorder
4> Re-connect the FW cable, and restart FCE
I use these steps successfully while switching between HDV and DV imports from my camcorder using iMovie 08. Hopefully, this resolves your problem with FCE. Later this weekend, I plan to experiment (for the first time) with FCE HDV import to try and see the export quality difference between FCE and iM08 (which apparently downconverts everything to 540 lines!).

  • Editing in iMovie 6 with Sony HDV

I would like to know before I buy a Sony HDV how much disc space to I need to have. I just want to edit my recordings for CD-R burning (not necesarily in HDV) and will store the MiniDv disks or DVDs (whichever version I purchase from Sony). I already have the firewire cable for Sony. I have a 17" PB (1.67, 1 GB RAM). I can buy an external firewire HD. Would like to know from people that have done it and do it successfully.
OR, would like to know what other options do I have to record in camcorder the best quality image I can get after editing and recording via iMovie and iDVD. I have tested a Sony MiniDv and found it to have poor video quality or not as expected and returned it.

    Hello d0csp33d,
although I have no first hand knowledge on HDV editing, what I hear is this:
    • file size of captured HDV footage is 4x the size of DV (which is already 13 GB/hr.)
    • capture times are 2-4x realtime depending on your mac's configuration. Only the most recent (and powerful) macs are able to capture in realtime.
    • it is not recommended to edit in HDV when the end product is a (SL) DVD. Instead it is recommended to downconvert to SD upon import and then edit as usual.
I have tested a Sony MiniDv and found it to have poor video quality
What was wrong with it? Which model? Did you judge the quality on your mac (in iMovie)?
I own two Sony camcorders (no HDV, no 3CCD) and my customers enjoy my videos and I have never had complaints about pic quality.
    hope this helps

  • Importing movie files created with SONY HDR-TG5

Having trouble importing movie files created with this camera. Have had success importing direct from the camera using streamclip, but struggling with old files imported from our PC. These files have these two extensions; .modd and .m2ts

    Eric:
Thank you. MPEG Slipstream worked great.
Do you know if there is software available that would let me see what is in/copy the files in the Sony folder so that I might be able to copy the disk directly instead of having to copy the files off of it with Handbrake? Would having the QT add-on for the MPEG-2 playback component be helpful?
    Thanks again

  • Date and time stamp with Sony HDR CX7

    Hi,
I am trying to figure our how to find date and time stamps for individual clips.
My workflow is as follows: I use disk utility to make a disk image (.dmg) of the memory stick and import the clips from this disk image. Everything works fine, but I am not able to find any date and time information on the imported clips.
I am slowly building a large archive of these disk images and I am wondering whether I need to add some some date an time info manually. I know that this information is recorded on the memory stick as the camera can display them.

I have FCE4 running on my Mac Mini. 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo. The FCE4 program was installed by my son using his account. He uses it the most and it has been working fine for him until now. No new FCE4 updates have been loaded. However, all of a sudden he can no longer "log and tranfer" the AVCHD files from our Sony HDR-SR7. The error is "AVCHD media is unsupported on PowerPC based hardware". Our Mac Mini is Intel based.
If I login to my account it works fine. I deleted my sons preferences in ~/Library/Preferences/FinalCut User Settings as well as the *.plist file. Rebooted and still he gets the same error above.
