Advice for creating a network

I want to create a home network with the following:
- a Mac Pro (acting as the server with the video, images, and audio files) in an office room
- an Airport Express connected to powered speakers to play music in another room
- an iTV connected to my television in the living room
- an Airport Express connected to a laser jet printer and an ink jet printer in the office
- a new Airport Extreme base station (not sure if I need this???)
1.) Do I need an Airport Extreme base station to transfer video and other files
from my Mac Pro to the iTV? Doesn't the iTV have a built in WiFi card?
An Apple sales person told me I needed the new Airport Extreme station to flash the card in my Mac Pro?
2.) Can two USB printers be connected to an Airport Express?
3.) I already have the Airport Express connected to my powered speakers, and this network is called Tunes. When I setup a second Airport Express for the printers, should this have the same name as the other Airport Express? Does it matter?
4.) Does this mean that when I turn on my airport on my notebook I will have to select from one of the different networks to connect to? How does this work since each Airport Express/Extreme will have a different name?
Thanks!!!

1.) So the only way to use the "n" speed of the iTV
and the Mac Pro is to flash it with the new Airport
Extreme Base Station? Is there any other way to do
this without having to buy the Station just for
this?
At the moment the software is only available with the new Airport Extreme base station.
2.) When setting up another Airport Express for
printers, would I just set it up and provide the same
name as used for the other Airport Express? OR do I
somehow set it up so it joins the existing network?
Join the existing network in client mode.
What is client mode?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108040
"By connecting one Airport Express (the one if the
office) to your internet connection, this will be
your wireless router."
I have no Internet currently.
It can still be your main wireless router even without an internet connection.
3.) Is there somewhere that I need to designate a mac
or an Airport Express as a "client?"
Macs joining a wireless network are clients.
An Airport Express can be a wireless router or configured as a client to a wireless network.
What is client mode?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108040
4.) What do you mean by "...and in theory you could
use the Mac Pro as a software base station (instead
of one of the Express units) ?" Do you mean I could
use the Mac Pro somehow to send music and video
without connecting it to an Airport Express or Base
Station?
Yes.
System Preferences > Sharing Internet
Share internet connection VIA Airport.
I know you don't have an internet connection, but this sharing will configure your Mac Pro as a wireless base station to which you can connect other Macs and Airport Express units and the Apple TV.
5.) Could my printers be connected to the Mac Pro and
be available wirelessly to my notebook?
Yes.

  • Request Advice for creating DVDs from 7.5 gig file sizes

    Hi,
    [using dvdstudio 3]
I’m looking for advice for home DVD project i'm working on. I want to create a DVD from video that has been captured to my computer using iMovieHD, and have completed my wanted edits for two clips. They are about an hour-plus each. When exporting the two clips separately (Sharing, in iMovie terms), the file sizes are about 7.5 Gig each at full quality, and I understand I’m going to have to cut some corners in the process to get both on one DVD and I’m even willing to have two DVDs, but still need to know the best way to decrease the file size for each one. The audio should remain as 16 bit 44.1 Khz, Stereo.
I’m wondering what the best method to achieve an optimum quality DVD is. Again, I realize I’ll have to compress the video at the loss of quality (i.e., “cut corners”) to make the DVDs.
In my previous experiences, I’ve retained the larger file size all the way up through the authoring process in DVD Studio letting it build a 7.5 gig dvd format (VIDEO_TS). Then, I used DVDx2One to compress it down to 4.5. The end result was pretty good and I never had any troubles per say. However, this project is important to me and I want to make the best quality I can. What would you do differently?
Here are my software tools that I use interchangeably for previous projects; copying, authoring, editing, etc:
-> iMovieHD 4x – used to capture the video.
-> DVD Studio 3 - to author and build my dvd session
-> ffmpegx - as a video conversion and compression tool
    -> DVDX2one to recompress DVD formatted (VIDEO_TS).
Thanks very much for your tips!
    JeffTronics

Hi Jeff - is the iMovie file in QT format?
If so, you need to compress it to MPEG2 - you don't need to suffer too much of a quality loss by doing so - how long (in minutes) is the video?
You should also encode the audio to AC3 - this will save loads of space as AC3 is about a tenth the size of a .aiff.
ffmpeg will create the MPEG for you, but so will DVDSP (as indeed will Quicktime). In your applications folder you should find 'A.Pack' which will handle the audio conversion as well.
The exact encoding parameters you use will depend on the nature of the footage that you have got - it's more than just squeezing it to fit - you need to account for fades, pans, zooms and fast action as well. Some parts can have a lower bitrate applied than others, and this is where a tool such as Compressor comes in handy. DVDSP will encode the footage as you work, or when you build if you want it to - this is also a reasonable option if you have nothing else available, or if you are new to the whole thing.
The best workflow is to go from iMovie to a compression tool to create your MPEG2 file. Take the associated .aiff file and encode to to Dolby Digital (AC3). Import both the MPEG2 and the AC3 file into DVDSP and you should be able to get the entire project to less than 4.37GB (the maximum capacity of a DVD-R).

  • Advice for Creating a Custom Default User Profile in Windows Enterprise 8/8.1 Preview

Just after some advice on the Best way to create a custom Default User Profile for our Windows 8 Enterprise Image.
We are also looking at the Windows 8.1 Enterprise preview so advice on creating a Default User profile for this would also be appreciated.
    My Requirements are listed below
-Pinned Web sites that open in Windows 8 App style IE
    -Default Windows 8 pre-installed Apps
-The Microsoft Lync Windows 8 Client from the App Store *I understand this would be tricky, not fussed though if it cant be done*
    -Customised Start screen layout
I have tried the Copy Profile tag in the Unattend.xml and syspreped the machine, this did not work.
I have tried using the new "Start Screen Layout" Group Policy object, this also did not work
The Closest I can get was to setup a user profile, Backup the Default User profile, Rename the User I worked on to "Default", Clean up the temp folder, then navigate through the user registry and replaced any absolute profile paths with the %USERPROFILE%
variable. This worked in terms of setting the layout of the start screen, but the Lync App was not present, and Windows 8 apps, eg Video, Music and IE, would crash when attempting to open them.
I know I am doing something wrong, so any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thankyou

Still not getting the results that I want, to recap I am trying to do the following.
Create a Windows 8.1 Enterprise Standard Operating Environment (SOE) Image for laptop devices at our school. These devices will be in the Students hands 24/7 and will be joined to our Windows 2012 based domain.
I am trying to create a custom Default user profile for the image so that when a student logs onto the Laptop for the first time they get a start screen that we have created.
The start screen consists of Pre-installed Modern Apps, a modern app created by our Software team that is side-loaded, Office 2013 Applications, and most importantly Tiles for Websites such as our Learning Management System and Intranet Portal.
    Now to the issues
I boot the target system into Audit mode, and setup the start screen accordingly. For the Websites,
I open the websites in the IE11 Modern app and use the built in control to pin the site to the start screen. Everything goes and looks as expected.
I then run sysprep with a custom unattend.xml with copyprofile inside it. Again everything runs as expected.
Now when I create a new user on the system the custom start screen appears however the websites that were pinned are no longer on the start screen. BUT when I manually open the Modern IE11 app, navigate to the website and pin the site, The Tile now appears
on the start screen in the location I put it.
    <Rant>
Now this puts us in a situation where we can no longer deliver a Standard Operating environment for not just our managed laptops but also our labs where a student just wants to logon and get to work.
Why as a Desktop and System Administrator, who manages a fleet of 300+ Desktops and 1000+ Laptops do I not have the full power to customise things they way I want them.
Yes I am aware of the new Group Policy setting for deploying Start screen configurations, Doesn't work when Web sites are pinned
Yes I am aware of AppsFolderLayout.bin, Doesn't work for Pinned sites.
Do the links above to Microsoft TechNet articles explaining how to customise Start Screens help, No they do not.
Finally I am aware that I can just create a shortcut to the websites and pin those, the issue is that this does not utilise the new Live Tile code that was introduced with IE11 and we plan to use these Tiles as another notification system for our staff and
    students.
I will continue to work on this, if I manage to find a solution myself I will post the process, however if anyone in the community, or from Microsoft for that matter, has a proven solution to pinning websites to the default user profiles start screen, please
    post it.

    Thankyou

  • Advice for creating a ghostly video filler

    Hi all,
I have just been approached by some of my lecturers who would like me to create a ghostly video filler. Essentially, they are looking for something that is about 10 seconds long, which will smoothly loop, with a ghostly theme.
I personally, am intending to try and create this within 3D space in motion, not got many ideas yet, but a ghostly green hue across the whole thing, some wispy smoke etc. then create several that I will be able to call on during the event, for instance one with text that I can edit quickly, re-render and push onto the projection if needed etc.
So, given that I am a motion rookie, with some minimal experience, I was wondering if anyone would be able to provide some advice in how to go about creating something like this. I've got access to motion for a couple of days before I head home for the holidays, and then for a week or two when I get back in January.
    Thanks,
    James

Well, the brief is something smoky and eerie! As usual, an extremely helpful brief . . .
I was playing around earlier with images and blending modes, essentially making it so that the image was only visible while the smoke was over it, so that's something I'm going to use, somehow, I may look at using it for the text idea.
Other than that, I might try and get some stock footage to work with in January, as we have a green screen studio on one of our campuses, try and get some of the acting bods to do something for me! Again, I would probably look into blending modes for that. But until I come up with a firm direction of where I want to go, I guess all I'm looking for is things people have tried that might work in this case.
    Thanks

  • Hardware recommendations and advice for 100 client network

    Hi
We are currently looking at setting up a very basic separate wireless network for a client in two adjacent large cabins (3m apart) that will support up to 100 clients max concurrently. This will be solely for contractors to access basic internet, connections to web mail etc. There will be no existing infrastructure to connect to, so we will be looking at an internet connection of some form, a small switch and the wireless network. Range isn't an issue as they are next to each other its the support for such a large amount of connections. I thought a clustered setup of 2-4 WAP321 might be a bit stretched and we might get issues as the number of simultaneous connections gets near 100. I was also looking at a couple of standalone Aironet 1600s, one in each cabin.
The network itself is very basic, as it is literally just shared internet access but I need to ensure that it's reliable with 100 clients connected.
I did ring presales tech but they weren't mcuh help and sounded like they knew less than me, so any help would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Harry

    Dear Harry,
Thank you for reaching Small Business Support Community.
By checking on the WAP321 datasheet I see:
    - Recommended user support = Up to 32 connective users, 20 active users
    - Active clients per cluster = 80
I agree with you when say "might be a bit stretched and we might get issues as the number of simultaneous connections gets near 100", therefore I suggest you to go for an enterprise-class, entry-level device like the Aironet1600 you mention.  I would anyway suggest you to contact back the presales team or the Wireless-Mobility Support Community for further assistance and advice.
Thank you for your time on this matter and please let me know if there is anything I may assist you with in the meantime.
    Kind regards,

  • Applescript for creating a network at start-up

Everytime I start up my mac the network I created is gone and I have to create a new one.
So I want to create an applescript that I can use as start-up item (application)
I found an applescript on the net but that one isn't working on my mac. So I changed it a little.
It works for "turn airport on" (instead of "Open Network Preferences...")
But "Open Network Preferences..." is below a grey line.
    What am I doing wrong?
    property CreateMenuName : "Create Network…"
    property NetworkName : "Net"
    property NetworkPassword : "paswd"
    tell application "System Events"
              tell process "SystemUIServer"
      tell menu bar 1
set menu_extras to value of attribute "AXDescription" of menu bar items
repeat with the_menu from 1 to the count of menu_extras
if item the_menu of menu_extras is "Airport Menu Extra" then exit repeat
      end repeat
      tell menu bar item the_menu
                                            perform action "AXPress"
                                            delay 0.2
perform action "AXPress" of menu item "Open Network Preferences..." of menu 1
      end tell
      end tell
      repeat until exists window 1
                                  delay 0.5
      end repeat
      tell window 1
      click checkbox 1
      click pop up button 2
click menu item 2 of menu 2 of pop up button 2
      click checkbox 1
set value of text field 2 to NetworkPassword
set value of text field 3 to NetworkPassword
set value of text field 1 to NetworkName
      click button 1
      end tell
      end tell
    end tell

Well in another discussion I got the answer of keeping your self created network when closing and starting up your mac. The created network will be remembered in System Preferences/Sharing/Internet Sharing/Airport options.
But somehow it needs to be activated. And you can do that by un-clicking "Internet Sharing" and clicking it again and click "Start" So with thanks to BDAqua I came to the following Automator workflow to be saved as an application which you can put in System Preferences/Accounts/ login-items.
    on run {input, parameters}
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "System Preferences"
click menu item "Sharing" of menu "View" of menu bar 1
    delay 2
    tell window "Sharing"
click checkbox 1 of row 10 of table 1 of scroll area 1 of group 1
    delay 1
    if (exists sheet 1) then
if (exists button "Turn AirPort On" of sheet 1) then
click button "Turn AirPort On" of sheet 1
    delay 1
    end if
click button "Start" of sheet 1
    end if
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "System Preferences"
click menu item "Sharing" of menu "View" of menu bar 1
    delay 2
    tell window "Sharing"
click checkbox 1 of row 10 of table 1 of scroll area 1 of group 1
    delay 1
    if (exists sheet 1) then
if (exists button "Turn AirPort On" of sheet 1) then
click button "Turn AirPort On" of sheet 1
    delay 1
    end if
click button "Start" of sheet 1
    end if
    end tell
         end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Preferences"
    quit
    end tell
    return input
    end run

  • Book & software advice for creating a program that would utilize USB.....

    Hey All,
I've been a mac user for about two years now and have become more and more impressed by the stability offered by Unix.
However, I still live in both worlds (XP and OSX) and my programming roots are windows based (sorry ).
    Here's the problem:
I'm trying to determine which direction I should head for writing a program that gives me access to the USB ports on a Mac, and allows me to correlate it to a web atmosphere.
My thoughts are: I'd have a device attached to a USB port (or multiple), and I'd use a system (OSX) USB driver to write to a database, in turn - use dreamweaver to build a WEB that interfaced with this database.
I'm not sure what software I should use to write an app that can talk to my USB ports, as well as load them into a chosen database. I think once I have the data collected into a database, I can handle the WEB side of this, but I want to take this one step at a time.
I installed Xcode and I was ready to take off when I said - "wait a minute, this isn't exactly visual studio." [even though it's somewhat similar]
My programming background is in C++, VB and ASP (with VB script & Java Script) but I haven't written for about 3 years (hence the ASP and not ASP.net) - So feel free to steer me in the right direction or just give me a general verbal tirade and tell me I'm in over my head! LOL
I've bounced all over these message boards, and see everything from opinions on Java, C, C++, even Python (which I never heard of until a post yesterday: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=133836&tstart=0)
I'm asking for some advice on what books would be a good aid for me to purchase in order to help me achieve what I'm trying to do. I stopped in at my local Border's bookstore the other night, and there was quite an array to choose from.
So here is what I almost picked up for a starter:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764584111/103-2161547-3122203?v=glance&n=28315 5&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
    Any suggestions?
Another major thought in my mind is the transition to little endian, which is what Intel uses (vs OSX big endian). Obviously, I don't want to get burned by this if I flip the wrong bit after the architecture changes....
I realize I may have really 'broad brushed' this, but I really wanted to hear everyone's thoughts since there may be other 'projects' I attempt to tackle on OSX.
Your suggestions on any books, sites, software, etc will be greatly appreciated......
    Thanks for reading,

  • Advice for creating a simple iPad presentation

    Hello,
Just wondering what my options are for getting a document created in InDesign onto an iPad? I've been reading up on the DPS but there seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there depending on when it was written and by whom.
Basically we do many presentations and pitches in my agency, these so far have consisted primarily of printed documents and boards. What they would like to do now is give the presentation to the client at the end of the meeting on an iPad for later viewing. These presentations are usually being worked on up to the last minute, so any iPad version needs to be as simple as exporting a file, plugging in the iPad and pressing an upload button.
    A few questions:
    1. They would like the presentation to appear as a standalone icon on the main iPad screen, as opposed to a document within a reader application. Is this possible?
    2. The DPS method of organising files and syncing with online servers doesn't seem ideal in my case. Am I right in saying there is still no local sideloading feature available?
    3. The 'stack' and 'article' method of sorting separate files seems very unwieldy in my case, is there are way to just have one long document (for printing and easy layout) and then have it scroll sideways like a magazine on the iPad?
    4. Failing all these, do I have any other options?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Aaron,
    Here are your answersd:
    1. No
To enjoy your own Icon, would mean to go through the process of building a custom viewer in DPS and sending your app to Apple. It usually takes 5-20 days to have it accepted. So, no last minute changes.
    2. Yes
    You are right.
    3. Yes, sort of
Instead of of on long document you create an Indesign book file, where each Indesign document represents one DPS article. You can then print your whole presentation with one click. In DP, you set your articles to horizontal swipe only.
    4. Yes
Interactive PDF is an obvious one.

The java DnD is not for you. It supports DnD between your app and other apps that have generic DnD support. For DnD within your app, your MouseMotionListener will tell you about the drags that are of interest (those inside your apps Window).

  • Advice for Building Small Network Question

    Hello,
I am building a small network environment which will connect to a larger office, scalability is important.  We will begin having about 30 users which will all need VOIP services.  The VOIP services will be hosted by a cloud provider.  My question is as of now I am looking to obtain a Cisco 2921 ISR Router and then a Cisco 2960-X 48Gig POE, and my main question is I am confident the switch can handle the power and operation of the phones but just to make sure I should not run into any problems with the router as far as forwarding the data, correct?  Any other comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have to help my son to clean up his WD usb-disk.He is running a mac. I would like to know the flags to give after mkfs.hfsplus so he gets a fully functional and "macishly" formatted drive. It's a big drive (1 Tb) so experimenting isn't that fun. I don't think journalling is needed but I don't know how mac does it when using diskutils. BTW, is it needed to write zeros to the disk before running hfsprogs?

  • How do I create Local Network Home Folders for Users from an Active Directory binding?

My situation is this... I run an iMac lab at my school.  I have a server set up to manage the network user accounts in the lab.  Currently, I can sucessfully create Local Network Users and log in to them from any of the iMacs.  My school has an Active Directory set up for all the students on campus.  What I'd like to be able to do is configure the server to allow the students to use their user names and passwords from their school accounts to log in to the iMacs and have it automatically build a network user folder on the server for them to use during the lab.
So far, I have been able to configure access for the Active Directory accounts to use the services on the server, mainly File Sharing, but I cannot figure out how to allow them to log into a user account on the client's machines using their same Active Directory credentials.  I have even attempted to allow the user accounts to create mobile accounts, but that's not working out either.  Entering indivual network user accounts into the server for every student every semester will be a nightmare.  I'm sure there's a way to do it automatically using the exisitng Active Directory structure.
The live server is running 10.8.5 Server still, but I've also got a clone running OS X Server in case it matters.  Please help!

ok reinstalled everything dns seems to be working have done sudo changeip -checkhostname and it says that both names match but then i started open directory and can't seem to get Kerberos started, i've tried changing it to stand alone then back again but it does nothing. I'm wondering why this would happen? i've tried adding a kerberos record but it doesn't do it just does nothing so i don't know what i'm doing wrong. I wondered if it might be a problem with the two network cards and dns as on ethernet one it is getting the dns name xserve.xxxx.ac.uk (which matches what the college server wants to call us) but on ethernet 2 gets xserve-2.local because it tells me that it already exists on ethernet one and renames it to this. I need to set up NAT so have ethernet coming in on port one and out again on port two. I wonder if my dns is backwards as its got the 192. address the NAT uses but its linked to the ethernet port one dns maybe this is the problem. would this cause open directory not to start kerberos?
