Advice needed on DB curriculum - Thanks

Hi guys and gals!
I'm a professor updating curriculum at the University of Louisiana @ Lafayette and needed advice on what to teach IS undergrads in a one or two semester DB sequence. I welcome all opinions, but am most interested in actual practitioners (and anyone from Oracle listening :-))
My primary questions relate to the second semester course. Presume at this point they have reasonably good SQL skills and decent DBA knowledge.
For Triggers/stored procedures is PL/SQL the way to go or should we be using java? Java would make my life easier, 2-5 years from now do you feel that PL/SQL will have a real place in Oracle, considering Oracle's evangelization of J2EE etc?
For a reporting solution I am looking at Oracle, Actuate and Crystal. Which do you feel gives a undergrad the best bang for the buck (marketability and learning experience).
Similar question on Data warehousing. Lots of vendors, anyone out here like something other than Oracle (and why?)
Thanks so very much for your input -- hope all have a fulfilling New Year
-glenn

Glenn:
I have to agree with andrew on the PL/SQL vs. Java question. Java is far too slow for something as performance critical as a trigger or stored procedure. Also, for 95% of the things typically done in a trigger or stored procedure, there is far too much programming overhead required in Java compared to PL/SQL.
In terms of report writers, my personal preference is Crystal. It has lots of good features, is relatively easy to embedd in applications written in a variety of languages, and, at least in Canada, seems to be pretty widespread. However, I have used probably a dozen report writers in my career (from mainframe text based stuff like Focus to fancy decision support stuff like Cognos supplies), and all share a number of similarities. Rather than teach a specific product, I would use whatever product to teach principles of good report design. Once you know how to use one product, the others are relatively easy to pick up.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Advice needed: Efficient way to scan users

    Hi all,
I wish to know the efficient way to scan users in Lighthouse. I need to write a workflow that checkout all the users and perform some updates. This workflow should run everyday at midnight.
I have created a scanner myself. Basically what It did are:
    1. call FormUtils.getUsers method to return all users' name into a variable.
    2. loop through this list and call a subprocess workflow to process every user. This subprocess checks out a user view, performs updates, and then checks in view.
This solution is not efficient at all since it causes my JVM to be Out of Memory. (1G RAM assigned to JVM with about 78,000 users)
Any advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.
    Steve

Ok...I know understand what you are doing and why you need this.
A long, long, long time ago (back in 3.x days) the deferred task scanner was really bad. Its nightly scan would scan ALL users each time. This is fine when your client had 4k users...but not when it has 140k users.
Additionally, the "set deferred task" function had problems with two tasks with the same name "i.e. disable resource" since it used the name as the xml object name which can not be duplicated.
soooo, to beat this I rewrote the deferred task handler to allow me to do all of this. Part of this was to add a searchable field called 'nextTaskDate' on the user object. After each workflow this 'date" is updated so it is always correctly populated with the users "next deferred task date"
each night the scanner runs and querys all users with a nextTaskDate of today. This then gives us a result set that we can iterate over instead of having to list each user and search for tasks. It's a billion times faster.
Your best bet is to store the task date in miliseconds and make your query a "all users with next task date BEFORE now"...this way if the server is hosed you can execute tasks you may have missed.
We have an entire re-usable implmentation framework that we have patented (of which this code is a part) that answers most of these types of issues you are bringing up. It makes these implementations much much simpler, faster, scalable and maintainable.
    this make sense?

  • Advice needed: decent field recording mic...

    Hi
Been trying to record some beautiful natural sounds with a "good for it's price" small mini-disc stereo mic.
unfortunately sounds too tinny and it just is far too sensitive to wind (yes, i've tried simulating a nice wind shield - even used my sock today!...) and makes a beautiful stream sound more akin to me running a bath! It's ok at picking up background ambience with a hiss - but that's about it.
So, the point is can anyone recommend a great field mic (with wind protection) that i can use with my minidisc recorder or my powerbook mobile setup?
I'm happy for a mono mic - though stereo would be cool. Something that will make my recordings sound more "pro" and my price range is about £100-200 ($200-400).
All help and advice is much appreciated!

You will be real lucky even to get a rabbit out of a
hat for that money, of which sounds like a pro,
    <which is'nt tiny.> thats like being hungry for a
meal of fish and instead of spending a bit of cash
thats wordy for a meal, you start steering at your
pet gold fish in a bowl, which is,nt no bigger than
half the size of coin, maybe then again you would
consider also to drink the water from the bowl, then
    eating the bowl, get it!
Hi Blayzay. I always read your posts with interest. I didn't get any of the above. I've read this three times now. I really don't understand what you are trying to say here. I did understand the stuff after this point in the post though.
    And please <whats a
small mini-disc stereo mic.> going to do?
Just to offer a difference of opinion. I have both a mono and stereo mini disk mic (both Sony I think). They work surprisingly well. I wouldn't record and orchestra with them, but for what they are intended for, they are very good. And no schlepping.
and please dont go out and buy a Ipod.
I love ipods. I've been trying to find a way to convince my wife that I need one since they came out. LOL. (hmmm ... "I just need it as a transportable drive" ... that was working until she found out how cheap other drives are now)
(Valves, tubes, condenser, ribbon) all those words in bracket is related to
    types of mic,s soundcard, preamps, interface, mixing-desk/ neve/tascam />berringer/mackie, sound-craft. Processor, c.p.u. fruity-loops, Garage-band, >i would say m-audio , but in your case no, diggidesign, apogee, rme, g2, g5 >mac-pro, dell power-mac then without even aking you'll know the
range or cost of pro, equipment.
All interesting stuff and you know about lots of gear there. But I can't imaging any of that stuff having use in the field. It's heavy. How would you power it. You'd scare all the wild life away. And the crew would laugh you off the set. Except the fruity loops part. Snacks are always good in the field. LOL
Cheers Blayzay. Thanks for the morning smile.

  • Advice needed - multiple monitors, what software is right for this?

I have an Intel Mac Pro (10.6) at work with 4 monitors, with screen sharing activated. I have an Intel mac Pro (10.6) at home with 2 monitors. I'd like to be able to do screen sharing, and the clients I've tested so far are driving me nuts - I can't figure out how to see all the monitors (one at a time if need be). What's the right solution - will ARD allow me to see the other monitors conveniently, or do I need Mobile Me, or ?? Advice would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mike
If the remote computer has multiple screens attached, ARD gives you the option to show all as one large screen or individual 'sessions' for each screen.

  • Advice needed please

    Hello there,
New to the forum and cannot find help anywhere else.
I have lost the calculator software and cannot reinstall/retrieve it.
Also, any software I try to install doesn't work - HotSync stops and says the application wasn't responding to HotSync.
Any advice would be much appreciated - thank you
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

    1. It's as good, if not better.
    2. According to Apple, the same material was used on the 5th Gen iPods as the Nano. You can draw your own conclusions on scratching issues.
    3. Yes.
    4. Yes.
    5. No, you need to upgrade to iTunes 6 in order to get video functionality. You won't need to reinstall playlists (as you put it). Playlists will remain intact after the upgrade from iTunes 4 to iTunes 6.

  • Advice needed to switch from Trial WS2012 to live version.

    Hi,
I'm new to Windows Server OS & powershell, but facing a problem now.
With my trial WS2012 R2 as DC & AD, I've converted one of my client PCs from Win7 workgroup to domain.
Now I've prepared my actual WS2012 R2 in a new PC, with every setting the same as the trial version (Computer ID, domain name & IP).  And added the client PC into the domain again. Thinking of a quick change over.
Just when I thought it can be easily done with a 1-to-1 replacement, my client PC created another new account when links to actual WS2012. With same domain and username again, but in another folder.
Now in my Client Win7, I have under Users folder:
    1. Orginal account folder for workgroup: MyName folder.
    2. After converting to domain in Trial WS2012: new MyName.MyDomain account folder.
    3. After replacing to actual WS2012: another new MyName.MyDomain.000 account folder created. And files from MyName.MyDomain folder are not accessible.
Why doesn't it link up with MyName.MyDomain account folder?
I don't wish to convert the trial WS2012 to live because it was installed in an old hard disk.
I wonder will migration procedure helps. Any advice to resolve it? Thanks.

You stated in your original post that you created a new domain with all the settings the same as what you created in your original domain.  That really does not make any difference because you created a new domain.  Each new domain creates a new
identity.  If you wanted to have everything remain the same, what you should have done was build your second server, join it to the existing domain, promote it to a Domain Controller.  When it becomes a domain controller, all the information in the
existing domain is replicated to any new domain controller.  After the replication completes (in your environment it would be done almost immediately), you can remove the original domain controller.  At that point, your PC would have been able to
log into the exact same account as you did with the second installation and you would not have ended up with a third profile.
As for recovery of a failed server, that's what backups are for.  You can use a backup tool, such as Windows Server Backup that comes as part of the operating system, to create an offline backup of your domain controller.  Recommendation is to
keep this up to date; that is, take regular backups.
A second method is to have at least two servers in your environment running as domain controllers.  This generally applies to shops that have more than a single server.  That way if one Domain Controller goes down, the other one remains to service
requests.  It does not preclude the need to take backups.

  • Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.
    Thank you very much

    Tamara wrote:
I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
    Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
    • You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
    • You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
    • You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

  • Had to have a rebuild of my laptop....advice needed!

Had to have a rebuild of my laptop....have now lost all my music from my itunes, but I can't transfer back on from my ipod. Also had to register my laptop (same) as another computers, so now no music showing as purchased, though I have. Also have hours of uploaded music from my own purchased, legitimate CDs, but won't transfer from ipod...it says it will erase. So very frustrated....thanks mr technician!    PLEASE  ....help, advice needed!

I believe that if you do a clean reinstall from your HD's recovery sector (D) or Recovery disks, the hard drive sector C is wiped clean. Everything goes, apps, data, address books, music, pix, viruses
    Is that what you did?

  • Advice Needed: Upgrade Path from ZCM 11.0 to 11.2

We are currently running 3 primary ZCM servers at 11.0. The database server is running Server 2003 and SQL 2005, the reporting server is running Server 2003, and the content repository server that we use for imaging is Server 2008 R2. We are looking to upgrade to ZCM 11.2. We want to move the database to a stand alone SQL server running Server 2008 and SQL 2008 R2. I also want to upgrade the environment to have the OS at Server 2008R2. What is the best way to go about this?
This is what is being discussed. Moving the SQL Server first. Upgrading ZCM to 11.2 on all servers. Bringing up a new server running 2008r2 and zcm 11.2 and setting it as Primary. Then retiring the two 2003 servers. Does this make sense? ALso needs to be done before August 1st so any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks in advance!

Yes, many people do just that. Copy your iTunes folder to the external drive. Once done, open iTunes with Option held down and select the new location of the library file.
