AE CC 2014.2 crashes after RAM preview.

Hey,
It crashes almost every time after RAM preview. I think it gives an error, but it's buggy and i can't see it correctly. The error box, the timeline, effects tab etc goes completely black. Can't close the program from anywhere else, only from task manager. And what's even more weird - it doesn't let me do a print screen of the crashed UI. What is there to be done?
Can't imagine it's because of the computer. I've got 32gb of RAM, 4gb graphic card with CUDA, i7. 2-3 months old, works perfect with other programs. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

Does it do it when your RAM preview with just a solid in your project, and nothing else?

  • After Effects CS5 crashing during RAM Preview

After Effects CS5 was working just fine less than 24 hrs ago.
Now I cant even get it to RAM preview some text moving across the screen as a test.
It keeps getting hung up on "Background Process Status Loading Projects..."
Never an issue before. Didnt update or change ANYTHING.
Of course this happens right in the middle of a job...nice....
    Utterly frustrated.
    Mac OS 10.7.5
2 X 3 Dual Core Intel Xeon (one of the earlier Mac Pro Intel towers)
    19GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

    Funny you said that.
That is what i thought the problem might be. I am going to archive some stuff on my hard drive.
That is when the app started having issues. When the project started getting larger and having more elements.
In fact, now i am getting a weird wobble when I render a sequence from premiere. If I only render part of it, it doesnt happen.
Maybe I need to free up some space on my hard drive...?

    Im running a Windows 8 in a IntelCore i7 4770 3.4GHz 3.4GHz, RAM installed 16GB - Video - NVIDIA GFORCE GTX 660
I just can not work this way, I need to finish this program and I can not find a good explanation for this crashes.

    Hello Mylenium,
First I apologise for my poor english, see it is not my native language.
Now, I have tried that and it didn´t do me any good.
I have backups, however Im not sure if "save incrementally" means the same thing.
Plus, I have managed to RAM preview going by parts, however I don´t feel like that must be the only way to do it.
    Thank you,

  • After Effects CS5 crash on RAM Preview OS X

Hello Friends. I've had a pretty great experience with AE CS5 so far, but I've been getting more and more recurring issues of AE locking up the entire computer on occasional RAM Previews. I get a spinning wheel, and the computer becomes unusable. I can usually change open applications with the keyboard, but they do not respond. In moments even that stops working and have a beach ball of death. Unable to force quit in any way, wether through menus, contextual menus, or keyboard commands. It takes a hard shutdown with the power button to get out.
The only thing I can find that *may* also be a connection is that I normally always save right before a RAM preview. Though it doesn't happen every time, could it be that I'm freaking out the app before it can fully write the changes to the saved file? Each time it happens, I do have a sense that I'm working too quickly and am waiting for it to catch up.
Not sure if anyone else has experienced it. Just wanted to let people know I've run into it more than a few times.

Thanks for the reply. I've been getting fewer problems by simply pacing myself before I RAM preview, but they have not entirely gone away. Here are my settings as of now.
Footage layers are hand drawn scans animated in 3-D space, but all on the same z plane (virtual animation stand - Reference Still Below). Very few effects. A lot of blending modes.

  • Temporary Machine Freezes After RAM Previews

We're having alot of trouble pinning this down, and are using up alot of time approaching a deadline.
    I'm using:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz
    8Gb RAM
GeForce 9800 GT with 182.50 Driver
    Win XP Pro x64 SP2
    with AE CS4
Up until a few weeks ago, this wasn't a problem, but basically, after a RAM preview, and in this case a 700 frames 1050x576 shot, single layer in the comp, no effects, with Task Manager reporting about 2.3Gb RAM in use during the preview - the machine locks up for tens of seconds, sometimes up to a minute or two when I come out of AE.  Can't open drives, can't access anything in fact, then suddenly it comes back and works normally again.  never crashes, just locks you out.
Am I missing something here?  Is this normal?  The point is that through the back end of last year, I spent 14 hour days throwing long HD shots and comps at AE, doing RAM previews, etc., but it all worked fine.  Some slowdowns with that kind of data flowing through, but nothing outrageous.
We spent today swapping out RAM modules, thinking it's a RAM issue, though there are no classic symptoms of RAM failure, but that hasn't helped.  Tons of free space on the two internal drives - 762Gb free on the boot drive, and 347Gb on a second drive.
I would appreciate any ideas as we are up against a difficult and tight deadline, but as ever, this kind of thing happens.
    Thanks.
    Julian.

Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing? If so, make sure that you've got enough RAM reserved for other applications, including the OS. Actually, I'd try just turning Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing off to see if that alone makes your problem go away.
A side note (perhaps not related to your issue): You didn't say whether you had installed the After Effects CS4 (9.0.2) update. That update fixed a lot of bugs.

  • Unable to create image buffer after RAM preview

Running into an odd and frustrating error. Built a comp using the new Ray-traced 3D renderer and now I'm regretting being an early adopter big time with all the problems I've been encountering with it. The latest comes whenever I do a longer RAM preview in an attempt to watch the whole duration of my comp. It will get to about 170 frames or so, at which point I've interrupted by pressing spacebar because I don't need to see all the way to the end of my work area (around 220 frames). It'll play the RAM preview back fine, and even loop it, but as soon as I stop playback, I get this error message: "After Effects warning: Unable to create image buffer." There's only one button: "okay" and as soon as I click it the same error pops up again and it will never go away, forcing me to close AE from the task manager. I've taken to saving before every RAM preview like I used to do with Flash before previewing my buggy swfs for fear I'll lose all my work after previewing. Any ideas about what might be causing this?
Some more details about my comp:
    1920x1080 @ 29.97
    Ray-traced 3D
About 70 3D layers (I'm guessing this is my downfall - new renderer not designed for this many layers?)
    Running Windows 7 Professional
    i7 2600K
    32GB RAM

508GB free on my 2TB internal drive where the project and cache lives

Yeah, some buffer is very likely not flushing when you interrupt the preview and then there is no more memory on the graphics hardware. Consider setting the work area and your preview options to use only the work area. if it finishes the preview "correctly", it may not suffer the issue. Beyond that - raytracing doesn't/ shouldn't care about the number of items. The math is such, that it makes no difference whether you render a million polygons or just one. Of course there are still limitations due to the GPU dependency, but I doubt you ever truly exhaust the cards' geometry buffers. Compared to pixel data that is a small amount...

  • Illustrator/indesign and premire pro cc 2014 crashes after splash screen

Hi, I can't figure out whats going on, I had CC running fine, the 2014 updates came and all software except photoshop crash after the splash screen.  I have done everything I could think of.  Verified fonts, I've uninstalled and re-installed creative cloud and the software.  I ran adobe cleaner which get rid of the original CC software (I didn't want that to happen)  I've deleted preferences, ran disk permissions and repair. CS6 software install and runs.
I am lost to say the least as to why photoshop CC 2014 works and yet, the others crash.  Any Ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi camdude,
Can you send the Adobe Illustrator CC 2014 crash logs to me at [email protected]
The steps to get the crash log are:
    1) Open the finder app.

  • AE CC 2014 Mercury Transmit Ram Preview with AJA flickers

    Hey Everyone,
I have installed the latest AJA drivers and plugins and enabled Mercury Transmit preview in AE but when I render the preview the output flickers. One frame is normal the next is darker, normal, darker etc.
Has anyone got this working yet ?
    Nic

    Hi Nic,
I'm not familiar with that error message. It's probably generated by the AJA Preview plug-in. Can you post a screen shot?
8-bpc vs. 16-bpc does not always affect the appearance of the comp, it depends on the source material in use and how you are manipulating it. And in any case you can always switch between 8/16-bpc to get better performance when necessary. Keep in mind that switching color depths will invalidate any cached frames.
Some facts about RAM preview playback performance with video preview in After Effects:
Enabling video preview of any form uses the CPU and memory resources of your computer, and when these are in low supply can eventually result in slow frame rates during RAM preview playback. This is because as the frames are played they are transformed on-the-fly (no caching) to the format of the video preview device. The higher the memory requirements of the frame (resolution, frame rate, color depth), the sooner you'll see the playback frame rate slow down. After Effects does not have the option of dropping frames during playback to maintain playback speed, like how Premiere Pro does.
The AJA Preview plug-in does this frame transform more efficiently than After Effects, because AJA has optimized their hardware-based playback pipeline to perform these transformations. It can still eventually be impacted by performance issues. Also, the AJA Preview plug-in currently has some limitations with scaled comp resolutions and color management, so there may be times when you may want to use Mercury Transmit for video preview instead.
When you are having problems with real-time playback with RAM preview, regardless of whether or not video preview is enabled the answer is always the same: reduce the resolution, frame rate, and/or color depth of the comp. The Resolution and Frame Rate/Skip controls in the Preview panel are intended for you to do exactly that, and the Shift+RAM Preview Options allow you to define two different sets of controls so you don't have to fiddle with those options frequently. Also, enabling color management will slow down RAM preview, as it does an on-the-fly transformation to correct the colors for screen display, similar to video preview. You can either choose View > Use Display Color Management to disable just the display correction, which will likely result in wrong color appearance of your comp, or disable color management in the Project Settings dialog altogether. Re-enable color management when you want to check the colors.
Otherwise, the best solution for slow playback in After Effects when you have a memory-intensive comp is a more powerful CPU and more RAM.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 crashing after RAM upgrade

I just got Premiere Pro almost a week ago after using FCP for years. I was just getting accustomed to it and thought I would upgrade my RAM to help Dynamic Link run smoother. I doubled it from 4 GB to 8 GB today and now Premiere Pro crashes either immediately or after about 20 minutes. My computer is a 2009 Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz. The new ram is from OWC.com. I ran a RAM test in Tech Tools and it passed as having no problems. Can anyone suggest anything? I would hate to have to go back to 4 GB and be limited to that.

    UPDATE:
This problem is not fixed at all. I went about 2 hours without a crash then had about 5 of them in a row. I have been reading everywhere trying to find a place to start. A full system rebuild and reinstall would take me a day or 2 that I don't have. The crashes happen any time, sometimes at startup, sometimes when I'm editing, sometimes when I am not doing anything. I get the "serious error" message and sometimes just get a "quit unexpectedly" along with this log:

  • Computer Crashes after Ram upgrade

I have a new powerbook (serial # W8544xxxxxx) with the new video card, screen resolution, etc. The system came with 512mb DDR2 ram, and I recently bought another stick of 512 at Newegg.
Now it recognizes it in the system fine, but the computer seems to crash when the computer heats up. When I run processor intensive applications, it will either just freeze or freeze and slowly turn the entire screen white. This happened right after I installed the Ram, never had a problem before.
Is this another part of the lower memory slot problems I've been hearing about?
This is the ram I bought : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227106
The ram works great, until the computer heats up, then it's all downhill.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
What you're seeing is typical of inexpensive RAM. While RAM may meet the stated DDR2 specs, not all will work with they way Apple's architecture uses the memory. This isn't, btw, limited to the series of PB you own.
Crucial, Kingston (not Valueram line), and Samsung are 3 memory brands that consistently perform well in our PB's. Crucial, for example, guarantees their memory will work if chosen off their memory selector on their web site. You can scan the discussions for other brands that people have found worked, too.
    Crucial is at http://www.crucial.com
    Kingston is at http://www.kingston.com
Samsung is available from a number of sources, one being OWC at http://www.macsales.com
