AE extreme dies after connecting USB hard drive and killing it too!!!!!

I finally got around to connecting an external LaCie Rugged hard drive to my AE via the USB port on the back of the AE. Both devices were working properly before I did this. I was intending to activate the drive as a shared drive or a Time Capsule drive. I then opened the Time Machine menu and opened the Preferences menu item and tried to select a backup disk. No disk was found.
Shortly after this step I noticed that the AE light had turned off. I plugged the hard disk into the Mac using a Firewire connection and it was DEAD. Disk Utility will not list the disk. The AE hard boot does not work so it is DEAD too. $400 worth of devices now DEAD and beyond warranty.
Yes I now realize I should not have expected the AE to treat an USB drive as a Time Capsule. Anyone else done this and had the same loss of AE and hard drive?

Hi DP,
The first computer I could actually put my hands on was a DEC PDP8. This was after the punchcard stack era had waned. Booted it up using front panel switches to input binary code to start the tape drives and load the programs. After that came the Data General model that was just as dumb but smaller and noisier. Computers were a pain in the * until I got my first Mac Plus in '86.
Why would a USB hard drive fry the Airport Extreme?

  • Extreme with USB Hard Drive and Backup 3.1 - Slow Connection

Has anyone had any experience with Apple's .Mac Backup 3.1? I have just setup my network with the new Extreme Base Station "N" with my Express being the main base station connected to my cable modem. When I go to use Backup 3.1 to backup my user folder to the wireless external USB hard drive, it takes forever! Is this normal?

    RD2516:
That's exactly what I did last night to backup my wife's MacBook Pro home folder (about 45GB). I hooked up the USB drive directly to the laptop and used Backup to make a "full" backup. (This after trying it wirelessly and realizing it would've taken all night).
Then, just for fun, I forced another backup a few minutes later. It was very quick, as expected. It spent a few minutes reading the files (64000 or so) and comparing them, but then did the very small incremental backup in seconds.
So, I think now that I have the biggest part of her home folder backed up, using Backup every night should be pretty easy.
    Hope that helps.

  • Usb hard drive and AirPort Extreme

I have been using an external usb hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme to store music which is then picked up by a Sonos system to play music even when my iMac is switched off - has been working great.  However I became aware recently (and I think this pre-dates upgrading my iMac to Mountain Lion) that my external hard drive no longer shows up as a shared drive within Finder.  If I go into Airport Utility / Edit / Disks - 'enable file sharing' is checked.  Disk Utility doesn't see the drive but I'm not sure that really means anything as a network drive rather than a drive connected directly to the iMac.
Has some recent upgrade disabled network drives on Airport Extreme's (ie assuming we are all now backing up to iCloud so don't need it)?
    Thanks

OK, I feel silly on this one.
After looking for issues with the airport and not finding any and needing a file from my backup drive, I had to connect it up to my PC. That's when I found my solution.
The Drive I had connected had stopped responding. That's why the Airport was not showing it and not allowing connections. I had power cycled the drive a few times while testing, just not long enough. I unplugged the drive for 2 minutes, all cables, then reconnected. After about 5 minutes, the Airport was able to confirm the drive and turned the share back on.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can Time Capsule show a connected USB hard drive?

Hi, I have just purchased 1TB Time Capsule, which supposes to show a external USB connected hard drive. But why there is no drive nor icon shows in Find after it connected to Time Capsule?
that USB hard drive just works fine with direct connection to my MBP.

in the finder, click on the icon of the TC under shared. a connection dialog will appear and you may have to enter your admin password. then click on the folder symbolizing your USB drive
that USB hard drive just works fine with direct connection to my MBP.
in case above does not work, check if your drive is formatted for Mac or FAT32. your TC will not recognize NTFS formatted drives ...

  • AirPort Disk Utility doesn't show AE Base Station-connected USB Hard Drive

I've got my AirPort network up and running, but I can't get he AirPort Disk Utility to recognise my LaCie USB Hard Drive.
A menu popped up once saying it had "become available" and asked me to eneter a password, but when I did it said it was incorrect (it wasn't) and the drive had disappeared again.

  • LaCie d2 195 GB USB hard drive and new iMac

Has anybody had a problem with a LaCie d2 drive that is connected via USB instead of FireWire? I have both types of external hard drives; the FireWire connected LaCie has worked flawlessly, as has a Seagate 300GB FireWire drive. But my poor little LaCie 195 GB USB hard drive bit the dust when I tried to copy my iPhoto library from it to the hard drive of my new iMac Intel Core. The entire Mac froze up, even though there was disk activity on the LaCie. After waiting for 25 minutes for the Mac to unfreeze, I finally manually powered down the system. Unfortunately this corrupted my LaCie disk, and it could not be repaired using Disk Utility. Even when I tried to repartition the drive, Disk Utility simply hung to the point where I had to do a Force Quit to get out of it.
I forgot to mention that I was connecting the LaCie through a powered USB 2.0 hub - that could be a source of the problem, but it worked flawlessly in my iMac G5. I did reconnect it directly to a USB port on the iMac, but still could not get Disk Utility to repartition the drive.
Luckily I had a secondary backup of my photo and music files, or I'd really be crying right now.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

Finally it did so once more and has not mounted via FW since. However, USB does mount it but big files take all day to transfer.
I took out the Maxator from the LaCie drive and put it in a FW/USB caddy, ok for a while then the same story. USB only mounting.

Tried new cable. repaired boot drive disc, repaired permissions, ran DiscWarrior over it, repaired permisssions, ran downloaded 10.4.5 combo, ran DiscWarrior over it and finally repaired permissions again.
    No Joy.
i would most appreciate useful suggestions.

  • How to connect external hard drive and DV camera

I have just bought a macbook pro with only one firewire 400 port. My question is, what is the best way to connect up an external hard drive and a DV camera so I can import video to Final Cut. Should I be plugging the camera directly into the external hard drive's firewire port and conecting the hard drive to mac via USB or connecting DV to mac via Firewire and then mac to hard drive via USB? Or does it make no difference!
    Thanks in advance

If the drive has two firewire ports, connect the camera to one FW port on the back of the drive and connect the drive to the computer using the other port.
If the drive does not have two firewire ports, you'll need an Expresscard 34 firewire card to create a second firewire bus. The card goes in the slot on the side of the computer. Hook up either the camera or the drive to it.
The cards can be found online for a reasonable sum of money.
    Do not use USB.
    Good luck.

  • Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
    and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?
    Thank you.

    YAY!
I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
    C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.
    THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!

  • Windows 7 and iTunes doens't recognise iPod Classic 80g after wipe clean hard drive and format fat32.

My iPod Classic 80gb every now-and-then goes funny, and eventually iTunes doesn't recognise it. In the past I could put it on disk mode, and do a reset, but some times I would have to format (FAT32), uninstall and reinstall iTunes, so it would work. Now it happened again, this time wiped clean the hard drive and formatted. However windows 7 and iTunes still doesn't recognise it. Tried many tips online but nothing works. All software I have used don't see the hard drive, so can't format it again.
I can get it on disk mode but even then windows and iTunes don't recognise it. When connecting to laptop my machine goes boiling hot. Left it connected with iTunes on for  few hours but still no luck.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello @turingtest2.
Following your threat I realized it was time to have my hard drive changed. My iPod classic has a Samsung Model: HS081HA, 80gb/3600 rpm (real hard to get it open and check out!!!).
My question is if I DO HAVE to buy exactly the same hard drive, or I could get away with another manufacturer and model, such as Toshiba (80 GB MK8009GAH FOR iPod Video 5th 5.5th iPod Classic 6.5th 7th Gen Hard Drive - Ebay listing)?
I ask you that as these Toshiba hard drives are considerably cheaper.
    Help much appreciated.

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • '09 MacBook Pro won't start up after installing new hard drive and restoring from an external hard drive.

I am in the process of replacing my hard drive and have run into a problem. I reinstalled OSX 10.6.3 using a DVD I bought off Amazon. That went well and I then restored my hard drive using an external and Time Machine.
After that, things still looked good but I couldn't log in to my user (and access my MacBook) because my password wasn't working even though my hint was correct. Yes, I am POSITIVE my password was correct; I even tried a couple other passwords to humor myself. I then gave up and decided to restart the computer.
Now my MacBook won't start up at all. It goes o a gray screen with a still loading symbol for a couple minutes and then goes to a solid light blue screen. I've tried starting up while holding command+R and I tied holding just command and neither worked.
Did I install the wrong OSX because I didn't use the same DVD that came with the laptop? Is there something wrong with my hard drive already?
    Please help =[

You probably bought the wrong RAM that has different pin assignments, so it won't fit in the slot. Return it.
I bought 4GB Memory online for my MacBook, so I could get it to run twice as fast.
Doubling the memory does not make your computer run twice as fast.

  • Power Mac G4 Won't Boot after Installing 2nd Hard Drive and Additional RAM

Hello. I am using a Power Mac G4 (PCI graphics) that I bought a few weeks ago. It was working perfectly fine until I tried to add an additional hard drive and add more RAM to the machine. After I closed the case and plugged it back in, it won't start up at all. No sound, no lights, nothing spinning, nothing. I removed the added hard drive and RAM, but it still refuses to start. I don't know what happened. Hopefully it's not a logic board failure or anything else equally bad.

  • MacBook Pro won't start after installing new hard drive and me

I changed the hard drive and also upgraded the memory on a mid 2010 13 inch Mac and then used the disks that came with it to reinstall the OS that came on that disk. It worked fine and installed and then the screen came on to transfer from the time machine to the new hard drive so I said yes, and it seems to work fine but then when it finished it asked me for a password. I hadn't put a password on it so that was a surprise. I tried several things but it finally only had the option to restart and when I did that it seemed like it was starting with the apple symbol and the little gear but then it went to a Gray screen with the little gear, and then seems to freeze and then finally goes to the blue screen.  The disk to reinstall is still in the drive but I can't seem to get the install to start again. I've tried holding down the c key and starting, I've tried holding down the command plus the c key and nothing....just goes to the blue screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Any additional drivers you may need can be found Here.
