AEBSn & XP

I have a USB drive plugged into my AEBSn and have one music andmovie librayr on there that is accessed by both my Macbook and macpro with windows xp pro sp2.
in windows when playing music files in itunes, sometimes it will stutter randomly and watching videos in VLC from the videos on the USB drive on the AEBSn will stutter as well.
but playing the same things in itunes and in vlc do not stutter when using the macbook connection; all of these are connected wirelessly.
any help or suggestions?
thanks

Thankyou so much for this tip!
I was having a nightmare trying to connect my XP laptops because they couldn't even see the network. It was frustrating because the Apple computers worked fine. Changing the channel setting from Automatic to 11 fixed the problem. You are right, Apple simply shouldn't ship hardware with basic bugs like this one.
Just a question, how do you know which channel is the best - ie least interference? is there a utility i can use to check, given that the Airport cannot select it automatically now for me?
cheers

  • Thinking of buying an AEBSn - Need to use it as a Bridge for Netgear - Pos?

    Hey,
I just moved into a new apartment where my landlord is providing free wireless access (yes, it's included in rent... so i wont be stealing it). What I want to do is purchase a new AEBSn to extend the network so that I can hook up my XBOX 360, External HDD (Time Machine), and Printer to the AEBSn. The main router upstairs which is providing the wireless is a Netgear WGT624 v3. What I want to do is grab that wireless signal with the AEBSn and redistribute it as a wired connection and wirelessly to take advantage of the features it provides when used with my macs (Time Machine, Easy Wireless Printing, File Sharing, etc).
Essentially what I am wondering is if it is possible to set up the Airport as a client of the Netgear.
*I would set it up as the main router, but that would mean giving my shiny Jonny Ive epitome of industrially designed wireless perfection to the common folk upstairs and then running an ugly Netgear down here... which just wouldnt be right.

You cannot set up an Airport base station as a remote base station to a Netgear WGT624. Doing this requires you to set up a wireless distribution system (WDS), and Netgear's wireless router does not support Apple's WDS system. And no, it wouldn't work the other way around either (Airport Base Station as the main, Netgear WGT624 as the remote).
    What you can do:
    1. the XBox could be connected to an ethernet-to-wireless adapter. All the major companies selling WiFi products to consumers sell such a device.
    2. the printer could be connected to an Apple Airport Express, which in turn could be configured as a wireless client to that Netgear wireless router. Note that anyone connecting to that Netgear wireless router would also have access to the printer
    3. Time Capsule would need to be standalone, on its own wireless network. You'd be better off just buying an external hard drive to cable directly to your Mac for doing backups.

  • Mini no longer connects to AEBSn by ethernet

I replaced the hard drive in my Mini with a larger one using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.1. It no longer connects by the ethernet cable to my AEBSn/100 with current firmware, when it did before the replacement. It gives itself a self-assigned IP address for the built-in ethernet, which of course does not work. I have one other Mini connected in the same way and it is working fine and has an IP address assigned by the AEBSn. I had the impression that using CCC would preserve everything, but clearly something isn't right. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion - I have thought about it. However, it shouldn't be this difficult. For some reason, the Mini does not see the AEBSn by ethernet and I have no idea how to force it to do so. I've rebooted the computer twice, but to no avail. If I turn on its Airport, it connects to my AEBSn wirelessly. But this computer streams 720 content to my Apple TV and I need that ethernet connection to work for satisfactory streaming.

  • Wirelessly bridge AEBSn and D-Link (DIR-655)

    Hi,
I'd like to use an AEBSn to extend the range of my existing 802.11n network (DIR-655 [Draft-N]) AP. I'd like to configure the AEBSn to use the same ESSID and WPA2-AES key as the D-Link and obtain the pertinent IP configuration from a server I've got configuired without connecting the two w/an Cat5/6 cable.
    Is this possible?

Hello sjolshag. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your D-Link router can be extended wirelessly with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).
The few that are known to work are:
    - Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    - Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    - BT Voyager 2091
    - Netgear WGR614 v6
    - Buffalo WGR-G54

  • Sharing multiple external hard drives running multiple OS's on AEBSn

    Hi,
I was hoping someone on this forum can help with this. I've been primarily a PC user but have converted to Mac thru a MBP. I purchased the AEBSn with the hope of having a networked storage solution for this mixed OS setup. The plan was to have multiple devices attached through a powered USB hub (>1 ext HD, printer, etc.).
The problem I'm currently encountering is the following:
    1. I added a brand new 500 ext HD to the AEBS and had no trouble mounting the drive. The drive is currently formatted as FAT32 and both my PC and MBP have no trouble seeing or accessing the drive. I want to use this drive as a backup for both the MBP and the PC.
    2. I tried adding a 2nd ext HD (160GB formatted as Mac Extended Journaled), that I use primarily as a CCC backup for my MBP, to the AEBS to see if I could see this drive. So far I have not been able to see it at all. I've tried manually mounting it using finder>go>connect to server and it still doesn't work.
    So my questions are:
    1. Why can't I see the 2nd drive? What am I doing wrong? Is it because I have two OS's on the network? Is it because the 160gb is using the wrong Mac format? I have not tried removing the 500GB and just connecting the 160gb to see what happens.
    2. From a back up perspective, can I copy Mac files onto the windows formatted drive and vice versa? I want to use the 500gb drive as a backup for files, photos and movies I create on either machine. Is this possible or do I need two different HDs?
    Set-up:
    * AEBSn (7.2.1)
    * powered USB hub
    * WD 500GB external HD (formatted FAT32)
    * WD 160GB external HD (formatted Extended Journaled) as a test. I'm using it primarily for CCC backup of my MBP and have a bootable copy on this drive. I wanted to see if I could add this drive to the AEBS and have my MBP see it.
    * MBP SR 2.4 (10.4.11) accessing AEBS through Wifi
    * WinXP desktop accessing AEBS through ethernet
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Hard Drive that fits under (over?) AEBSn

Since the AEBS now supports USB Drives, has anyone heard of an external drive (or drive enclosure) that fits under the AEBSn?
The follow-on question is: would that have much effect on signal quality to clients on a floor below?
Finally, what about placing a hard drive on top of the AEBS? Would that be a problem? I have a small Western Digital Passport that I could use but I'm just not sure.
    Thanks,
    Chip

According to an ad in MacWorld or MacLife, G-Technology also has a drive of that form factor. I bought the NewTechnology drive from MacSales and it arrived yesterday. I just wish it was fanless like the other devices on my desk. It did come with some nice software installed and 1 license for ProSoft's DataBackup.

  • AEBSn admin problem error -6753

So, I just brought home a new AEBSn and set it up just fine. The internet works on all my computers, wireless and wired, but... I can't admin it anymore. Airport Admin won't let me connect to it, update my firmware, or anything. I want to get in there and change some setting (WEP, open ports, etc) but I just can't. I've tried reseting it, hard reseting it, using different computers, etc. and nothing. Any ideas?

Nevermind, I got it. Someone on here mentioned doing a hard reset while it was booting up, and that did the trick. Thanks

  • Hard Disk connected to AEBSn Where is it??

    Hello all,
So i have my portable drive connected to my AEBSn Router and i cant get Time Machine to recognize it in the preference pane so i can wirelessly back up my files. Im sure its meant to work as this is how Time Capsule works, Right? My MB is up to date etc. Im just tired of plugging my Buffalo ministaion (160Gb) into the mac to back up and would like the convenience of wireless back up!! Any ideas?
    Many thanks
    Stu

Due to problems with getting this feature to work reliably, Apple has removed the ability for Time Machine to back up to an Airport disk. That is why you are not allowed to choose this option.
Apple clearly intends to allow Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule, so likely a Time Machine update will become available for the use of Time Capsule users once this product ships. However, it is unclear whether Apple ever intends to solve the Airport disk problems that prompted them to disable Time Machine backups to it.

  • AEBSn + Alcatel Speed Touch Home ADSL modem

I just bought one of the new Airport Express 802.11n base stations, and I can't get it to connect to the internet through an Alcatel Speed Touch Home ADSL modem. This modem works flawlessly with my Airport Express router (and with previous routers) using PPPoE.
I've configured the new AEBSn exactly in the same way, I can access it wirelessly, but it seems to hang during the PPPoE negotiation - it shows "Connected" for a few seconds, but I've never been able to even ping any addresses outside my network. I'm stumped - has anyone been able to get this combo working?
    Thanks!
MacBook Pro, Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Do you have DHCP Enabled on your ADSL modem ? Does it act like a router also ? If Yes, what is the default IP Address of your ADSL Modem ?

  • AEBSn + USB disk, not visible in Windows

Have been using AEBSn as access point for last 6 months. Now added a LaCie MacMini drive via the USB port on AEBSn but am unable to access it via the LAN. I know this is a common problem and have checked the settings described in some of the responses to no avail.
The disk is formatted as HFS and can be accessed using MacDrive when directly attached to PC. The disk name is currently "Lemon" (so no funny characters).
AEBSn has latest firmware (7.2.1), the disk is visible under "disks" on the Airport Utility, file sharing is enabled with base station password, guest access is read & write and disks are advertised globally using Bonjour.
I have tried to access from three different PCs. The latest Bonjour (1.0.4) is loaded and is enabled in firewall (AVG in 2 and Windows in other). From Windows Explorer I can see the AEBS (properties shows it as a CIFS server) but it has no folders. The Airport Disk Agent is running in the system tray but does not detect any disks.
Please help, my central back strategy is in ruins!

Hi, I just got my usb disk working!
I got Airport Extreme (the latest one), all the firmware updates (7.2.1) one pc with WINXP. A 500Gb USB disk from Packard Bell. I want to connect the drive to the Airport and serve files over the wireless.
my trouble was that while I could see the disk in airport utility, I could not actually connect: wrong password, user etc.
As the disk is visible in Airport Utility and the Extreme station is visible in the disk management utility in the status bar, I concluded that there must be a problem outside of the Airport Extreme. Indeed, this I found to be in my network settings, which I easily fixed by installing Microsoft Client for Networks. Practically I did this by Start>Network settings right click Properties. then selected the wireless network right click properties once more. Under the General tab I checked for the presence of Microsoft Client for Networks, it wasn't there so on the same screen I click Install.. select Clients and fianlly Microsoft Client for Networks. Bingo.
I hope this helps, I spent a whole day looking around in this forum and no one has suggested this. So I do and wish you good luck! (now to see if I can get the music onto my Airport Express!!!)

  • AEBSn w/ Western Digital My Book w/ Environmentally friendly 10min power

I have researched the line of external 500GB WD drives and it appears 3 of the single drive units have Environmentally friendly feature...
To me this is very important in keeping the drive cool and extending its life.
However I would like the friendly feedback of users on this forum to know if this drive actually works with the AEBSn as advertised and the drive does shut down if its in idle for 10 mins and does power up if someone tries to read/write to it since this is being attached to the router and not the computer.
    Any feedback is appreciated.
Here are the 3 models with this feature from least to most expensive:

    Hi jetspeedz-
I suppose the theory is good.
I am leery of "green" or "environmentally friendly" products as they are akin to a giant loaf of bread-marketers use the terms loosely and the words can mean almost anything.
You are doing the right thing by researching the products you intend to use.

  • Windows Cannot Connect to Canon MP530 Printer via AEBSn

OK, here's my setup, and my problem:
    1. Mac mini, Windows Vista PC, Windows XP PC all connected to an AEBSn via Ethernet.
    2. Bonjour for Windows installed on both PCs.
    3. Ministack w/built-in powered USB2.0 Hub & Internal HDD connected to AEBSn's USB port.
    3. External HDD in USB 2.0 enclosure attached to Ministack via USB port.
    4. Canon MP530 Printer connected to Ministack via USB port.
I can read and write to the Minstack's internal HDD and the other External HDD from any computer on the network, no problem. I can print to the printer from the Macintosh. But I CANNOT print from the Windows PC.
I can, allegedly, see the printer from the Windows machines and add it via Bonjour. I have also tried to add it via the method listed at iFelix's website (i.e. adding a printer by creating a new TCP/IP printer port). But nothing works.
Here is what happens: everything "appears" to work and the printer shows up on the Windows machines and in fact quite often once it is set up I can print a test page. However, once I try to use the machine later on, after the initial set-up it never works, this has happened now over about 15-20 cycles of installing, uninstalling, and re-installing the printer.
What I notice happens by looking at the Windows printer queue when i send a document to the printer in Windows is the following:
    1. Sometimes the print dialog will simply say something like "Checking printer status" and just freeze there and nothing prints.
    2. Sometimes it will add the document to the queue and then immediately delete it and nothing prints.
    3. Quite often it will simply say something like "Printer is not responding" or "Printer is offline" and the print job just sits in the queue and nothing prints.
    4. Sometimes, and I am not joking, the document will print out minutes later, inexplicably, once ten minutes later after the computer was turned off!
This is maddening and I would love a solution, even if that solution is ditch the Canon and buy "insert printer name" or "known working printer", because at this point I just need to print from the network with some consistency. I can print from any computer if the Canon is directly connected, but that is a horrible process of plugging and unplugging USB cables, and this is SUPPOSED to work.
Also, I would note that I am not adverse to using a switch with the printer, and would prefer an auto switch if anyone knows one that is know to work with PCs and Mac. I would prefer one that did not take an Ethernet port (like the new Belkin one) as I need all three of them for wired connections.
Any help greatly appreciated as I have been battling this problem for many days now with no help, and the Apple Geniuses at my local store could not provide a solution or even recommend a printer that was known to work with Windows via the AEBSn.

    Thanks, Arimaris!
    Appreciate the response!
Your first link should be: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/8013.html
That is the link for the compatibility list for the NEWER AEBSn, the one you provided is for the older base station. I've seen this list before and the problem is that most of the printers are older there, and hard to find, and there is no certainty that if you do buy that older printer it will workk as the disclaimer on the article reads: "Please also note that due to changes in firmware and software upgrades some printers which are in this list may no longer in fact be compatible."
I would love to see an OFFICIAL lost from Apple about which printers are KNOWN to work with the AEBSn via USB, but I am thinking they might not do that so as not to anger their partners who cannot seem to make their printers function properly via Windows.
I've also tried the method mentioned in your second link, many times, and it does not work for me, either consistently or reliably. I've gotten the printer to work that way (creating a new printer port via TCP/IP w/ AEBS IP addy) maybe once or twice, usually right after I set it up, and then immediately after the test print, or after a restart, it stops working. I've also had it not work after set-up. I've also experienced the "It doesn't work, walk away, and then it prints 15 mins later" syndrome, with this approach. Also, it is a pain to later delete this new TCP/IP port and try again.
Something has got to give, someone has got to know the answer to this problem. I valiantly tried to get answers from the "experts" and "geniuses" at MacWorld this month, to no avail. Sorry you are experiencing the same, I feel your pain.

  • Help. Connecting Slingbox to Apple Airport ExtremeG wired to AEBSn to Cable

Ok guys I need your expertise here. To make a long story short this is what i have.
Cable modem to Apple Extreme N- and to Apple Extreme G through gigabit port. What i want to do is hookup the Slingbox Tuner to the Apple Extreme G through the single ethernet port.
How do i setup the routing and forwarding and on which device?
Anyone have a similar setup... In case your wondering its to keep Wireless N and legacy B/G seperate
Again Cable Modem--> ExtremeN- gigabit to - ExtremeG <--Slingox
    Thanks

...and i see a section in the Admin Utility WDS tab that say Relay or Remote! Which one do i set it to? and is WDS the same as a Bridge?
You don't want WDS. That is used for wirelessly connecting base stations. It is not applicable when you are connecting them via Ethernet.
In "AirPort Admin Utility", to configure the AEBS as a bridge you would disable the option to distribute IP addresses.
Why does apple make it so hard to update software.. the firmware on this is 5.7 Where do i go to get the latest Firmware and Windows Software.
That is the latest firmware for that base station.
Also you mentioned to turn this into a Bridge, However i need the Round station to distribute IP's to B/G clients...
Why do you need that? In the dual band network you reference all the older AEBS is configured as a bridge. All of the clients (802.11n, 802.11b/g, and Ethernet) get IP addresses from the 802.11n AEBS.
...but im hooking up the AEBSn to the Wan port will this work?
Do you mean that you are connecting the internet to the round AEBS's WAN port? If that is the case then you want to operate the 802.11n AEBS as a bridge... not the round AEBS.

  • AEBSn Configured in Bridge Mode

The AirPort Disk Utility on two separate Macs detects a shared disk attached to an AEBSn configured in bridge mode but returns an error message when trying to connect to it using an account name and password.
Could this be because a certain port or port must be forwarded from the router to the AEBSn?
I am currently forwarding ports TCP 548, 139, 445, and UDP 192. Are there any other ports that need to be forwarded so that the AEBSn is fully functional as a disk sharer while in bridge mode?

I wouldn't port forward at all to be honest. If you are port forwarding to the routers address the computers wont be able to use those ports, because they are not gettin their IP address from the base station, it's coming directly from the router, the airport base station is simply passing it on.

  • Best way to extend g and n networks with ethernet and AEBSn

Can anyone suggest the best way to extend both b/g and n wireless networks using a dual band AEBS, an AEBSn and AXs b/g?
I have two areas of the house served by cat5. Right now I have a wired AX set "Join wireless network" and an AEBS n wired and set to "Join wireless network". Wondering if that is the best way to do the b/g.
I have an extra AX. Wondering if I could do AEBS Main to cat5 to small switch in other part of house with cat5 to AX set to "join wireless network" to extend the b/g and cat5 to the AEBS set to "extend network" to extend the n component of the network in the same space?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Yes "Solution 3:" is what you want to use.
Yes your MacBook will pick the "best" base station to connect to at any given time. Only Apple's engineers know the algorithm used to determine which offers the "best" connection.

  • Use TC as temporary AEBSn Until Time Machine is Set Up & ready for B/U?

I want to set up TC by itself with iMac and MBPro and use the same as AEBSn until I set up Time machine on each computer. I have Leopard on both, but with extended first backup times that I have been reading about I want to have TC ready to go but set up time machine up on each computer and do the backups at convenient times when no one will be using the computers, such as overnight.
Message was edited by: Terry Temple

That's essentially what I want to do. I'm just wondering if the TC can just operate as a AEBSn until I turn Time Machine on on each computer for the first time. Normally, I would connect all of the devices I intend to connect and get TC working and then turn Time Machines on when I am ready.
