After a restore from Time Machine my login password does not work.

My HD crashed and I replaced the HD.  I then restored from Time Machine.  After it was done restoring it prompted me for my apple ID and password and account info.  Now when I try to login, the password does not work.  After several failed passwords, it says I can reset my password using my apple ID.  How do you do this?  I click on the message and it just disappears.  I can't login!

Is it your actual Apple ID login password that you're talking about (which is obviously working since you got into this forum) or the password for your user account. If the latter, simply boot to your ML Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and set a new password via Terminal.
Boot into your Recovery partition and, from the Utilities menu, open Terminal. In Terminal, type in:
resetpassword
...a small app will run allowing you to select a user and change the password for that use. Enter the new password twice (the second time to verify) and give yourself a password 'hint'. Then reboot and use your new password on your account.

  • Quirks and problems after a restore from Time Machine

I had need to restore from Time Machine. It did the job, but it wasn't as easy as restoring from SuperDuper. Apple iTunes Store passwords and iTunes registrations were all lost, requiring me to re-enter passwords for the various users' authorizations to play music (and burning a user on each of those accounts.)
As I used the restored system, there were several things that weren't quite right and had to be fixed as I encountered them. One persistent issue is that Safari cookies aren't working. For all the sites that had cookies to recognize me and log me in, the cookies no longer work. I have to log into the sites on each visit now. It will remember nothing.
Is there a general purpose restore tonic that will fix all these quirks?
I'm thinking of going back to SuperDuper and just set it up back up to a different volume each night for a week to have a full week's worth and skip this Time Machine mess.

In Safari, some of that password stuff is indeed handled by cookies from the various sites, but a lot of it is actually handled by the "autofill" function which fills in form fields (in this case name and password) with whatever you last used there -- independent of any cookies.
While running Safari, go to Safari / Preferences... Go to Security. Be sure that you are allowing cookies to be received in the first place.
Then go to Autofill. See if you have the item checked to allow recording and automatic filling of "User names and passwords". You can edit the list of them to see what's currently in there.
If this doesn't do it for you, you might want to try selecting Safari / Reset Safari... from the menu bar. The panel will allow you to select which data items to reset.

  • Downloads folder missing after system restore from Time Machine

I installed a new HDD, installed Leopard, and the did a system restore from Time Machine. Everything seems to work fine except from a big question mark in the dock, where downloads folder should be. Any suggestions pls?

Thank you very much for your quick answers.
Probably the problem originated from excluding the Downloads folder from my backup, although it should have been there in my new installation. The interesting thing was that this folder were nowhere to be found in the Finder, and by trying to download something from Safari, it just wouldn’t.
I did a Repair Permissions from the HDD, not the Leopard DVD, and all came back to normal.
I have to admit, that coming from The Win world, this HDD replacement was the easiest and fastest ever, by far!

  • IPhoto will not open my library after I restored from Time Machine

I was successfully able to restore most if not all of my data from Time Machine after I had to get a new hard drive on my iMac. But iPhoto will not open my photo library. A window pops up that says I modified some of my photos using a newer version of iPhoto, so I must open that version. But I do not have a newer version than iPhoto 7.1.5.
I have iPhoto 8.2 on my laptop, but how could I have modified any of the same photos on that? The iMac library is not on the laptop.
I would appreciate any input on how to recover my photo library.

You can get this message if the database file is corrupted.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • After full restore from Time machine, my TM hard drive won;t mount

I got my macbook pro back from a logic board repair and restored it fully from Time Machine using my leopard install disc.
Took a while, but it has installed OK. But some applications weren't restored and now the Time Machine drive won't mount on the Macbook at all. When I open up time machine - and try to choose a backup disc nothing comes up.
The drive shows up on a PC when i connect it (but won;t read it as its mac formatted) so I'm pretty sure there;s nothing wrong with the drive.

Also, be aware that TM thinks you got a new Mac, not a new logic board. Thus you won't see your TM backups in the normal way. You'll need the (badly named) +*Browse Other Time Machine Disks+* option (see #E2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum).
In addition, when you start doing new backups, TM will start a whole new "sequence," as if it were a different Mac. See #C8 in the Troubleshooting Tip for options.

  • After Full Restore from Time Machine..

    Hello All!
I've searched around but can't find the solution.. Unfortunately there was a terrible accident with my last Macbook Pro so I purchased a new one... I did a full install using Migration Assistant to replace my User account from Time Machine. I never got the option to 'use time machine history' and now aren't sure whether it's 'building' on top of my old Time Machine or just starting a new one. When I go into preferences it says 'oldest Back Up - None' & 'Latest Back Up - None'
Does any of this matter as the Old back ups are still there - the External Harddrive says 127 of 250Gb used... Or do I need to 'merge' these backups?
    Many thanks.

I think that you should be fine.  If you open Time Machine you should be able to determine the status and it should work as designed.
I have never encountered the"Inherit Backup History" that you mention.  It probably is a Lion feature (I still use Snow Leopard) and I have never used Time Machine to transfer data to a new MBP or a restore.  I prefer to select what I want to retain and let the rest go by the wayside.  This way any 'trash' I may have does not get copied to the new MBP.  Consequently when I connect the Time Machine HHD, it then does an entirely complete new update.
Keep the Pondini web site in mind.  It has a plethora of useful Time Machine information.
    Ciao.

  • 17" not getting past boot after complete restore from time machine

I have a 17" 2.5ghz mbp with 4gb of ram. Last week it would only boot up in safe mode and after running the apple hardware test it gave me the nvidia graphics card error code. I took Otto the apple store and they sent it in to have the logic board replaced. I got it back Friday working fine, but they had installed a clean install of osx. I used the time machine to restore my user settings but it did not restore my applications or photos. So I reformatted the HD with a snow leopard disc and once I had done that I plugged in my external HD with time machine on it and proceeded with doing a restore from my last restore point. Once that had finished and restarted it got stuck at the boot screen with the circle with the line through it. I restarted it in safe mode and everything is fine, I then ran the hardware test and nothing came up.
    Any ideas?

Just a thought... my husband's MBP 17" hard drive crashed last month. Personally, I think it was a lemon drive since DH never moved it from our home office -- and his desk's flat surface -- where he worked all the time. On the other hand, I have a MBP 13" that gets moved all over the house, stuffed into a case and carted out-of-town, and used by our kids! yet still tolerates the abuse nicely!! (I know, I just jinxed myself there, most likely!)
We bought both of our MBPs last summer, and OF COURSE when we took his to the Genius Bar to have them take a look, it was only TWO DAYS OUT OF WARRANTY! ARGH.... But!!!! Since it was still sooooo close to being in warranty, they graciously honored it and replaced the HD for free!!! Yay Apple! Now it's working beautifully!!
Interestingly... when I was first trouble-shooting his "circle/line only boot-up," I read in one forum that some of the 17" MBPs sold via retail from early to mid-2009, MIGHT have been sold with questionable HDs... hmm... but, Apple didn't find this out until complaints started coming in... I cannot find that particular forum now... argh again... and the Genius at the Bar said he had not heard of that happening... soooooooo..... no solid evidence here, but anecdotally, an interesting thought.....? Good luck!

  • IMac won't reboot after system restore from Time Machine

I just installed a wacom intuos pro tablet on my imac running snow leopard. The system clock reset to 1st Jan2000 and system prefenerces were no longer accesible. I performed a system restore from my time machine but now can't reboot. The restore completed succesfully (or so the it told me). When i restarted the imac i got the usual 'bing' followed by grey screen and spinning wheel swiftly followed by a light blue screen with the cursor in the top left hand corner.
There is sat for an hour befoe I switched off and tried again......same result.
The installation disc is still in the optical drive.
Any advice please on how to remidy this?
    Thanks

I have/had a similiar problem. What I did was reset the SMC and PRAM.  You can also do a safe boot. For the PRAM, I had to do three times, and my computer finally booted up. Afterwards I verified my disk and repaired my permissions. So far so good. I guessing that Spotlight needed to re-index the system.

  • How do I get past a blue screen after full restore from time machine and rebooting?

Wife had her hard drive replaced by apple, they reinstalled the os.  After boot up system questions, the option to restore everything from timemachine backup was selected.  System came up to login but would not take what the password should have been.  I rebooted the macine and it has not come back.

That;s really not enough free space... you can use a tools such as OmniDiskSweeper to find out where your large files reside and begin pruning (or copying to an external if they're files that you want to keep).
One thing is certain - if you're going to continue your current usage you're certainly going to need to install a larger boot drive.

  • After full restore from Time Machine Backup, will TM continue

I fully restored my iMac using my time machine backup. Since my iMac looks the exact same as before why won't time machine just continue backing up like normal? Why do I have to start all over again with a full backup and then the incremental backups?

Just checked out the linked article, and it looks very helpful. I'm at work at the moment, but when I get home I will take a look. Thanks.
That article wouldn't apply if the mac is exactly the same.
I think it would probably be easier just to wipe the backup drive and start over, if everything really is exactly the same.
    Good luck!

  • Restore from Time Machine - original external HD is not available

My TIme Machine disk was originally created on an old flat-screen iMac which had an external FireWire hard drive.  That external drive died, which was part of the motivation for upgrading to a brand new iMac.
The original iMac's HD was migrated to the new iMac's internal drive.
What's the most practical way to get Time Machine to restore the contents of the former external drive to the new iMac's internal drive?

  • Time Machine to another mac does not work

    Hi,
I am experiencing a really huge problem with my time machine backup.
    Setup:
I want to backup my Macbook onto a external hard drive connected to my Macmini. Both are connected to my Airport extreme. AFP on the Macmini is enabled and I am able to access the drive on the Macbook.
If I mount the backup drive before starting the backup manually I have these errors in my system.log:
Aug 9 13:30:27 danst /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[237]: Backup requested by user
Aug 9 13:30:27 danst /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[237]: Starting standard backup

Aug 9 13:30:35 danst /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[237]: Backup failed with error: 19
If I do not mount the drive first I get the following errors:
Aug 9 13:32:34 danst /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[237]: Backup requested by user
Aug 9 13:32:34 danst /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[237]: Starting standard backup

Aug 9 13:32:42 danst /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[237]: Backup failed with error: 19
I am really unhappy with this it would be great if somebody could help me.

That's great. Now I need to troubleshoot why only the Mac directly connected to my back up drive will work. The other macs will not let me select it...
Does it have to use the GUID partition Map? I have two USB drives connected now and the one I am using for Time Machine is not showing up as a valid drive for TM. THe other drive is though.
What did you end up doing to finally get it to work?

  • After a restore from time capsule the app iCal is not restart. How can I install iCal manually for Lion?

    Dear comunity coukd you help?
After a logic board failure and the repair by Apple I tryed to restore my MacBook Pro from my Time Capsule.
It worked at least, but for some reasons I don't understand the App iCal was not restored and is missing now.
I searched for a manual way to install the app but did not find a file to install iCal.
    What may I do?
Thanks for your help and support!

Just to confirm, does your Firefox hide the .js extension on previous.js and the various upgrade files? In that case, you would be looking for a file named recovery with a type of JScript to rename to recovery.old, and similarly with any sessionstore file of type JScript.
Or maybe it's easiest to turn off the Windows feature of hiding certain file extensions. This article has the steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hide-file-name-extensions
