After importing from iPhoto, Originals are still in the iPhoto Library

I have imported my iPhoto library in the Aperture but when I look to see where the originals actually reside I see that they are still saved in the iPhoto Library directory structure.
How can I make sure that all the previous iPhoto pictures have the master copy in the Aperture?
Please advise. Thanks.
G5 Dual 2Ghz (June 2004 model), MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Be careful about deleting the iPhoto library. iPhoto supports videos and several image formats Aperture does not support. If you delete the library you will lose them. Aperture will tell you that there are items it could not import, but it will not tell you what they are!

After importing and rendering images are still very slow to go through and develop. No issues in LR 5.3 which was very fast. Canon,Nikon, Leica and Fuji files all rendering slow. iMac 2.9 ghz 16gb RAM OSX 10.8.5. Catalogs and images are kept on external drives. Drives running fine. Really need a fix on this since I'm norally imported and processing at least 4,000 images per LR Catalog. Is there way to revert back to 5.3? I can't use 5.4 is its current state. Thanks.

Download LR 5.3 and install it
By the way, lots of people have this complaint about LR 5.4, and the advice I give is to use LR 5.3 unless you need one of the new camera models supported by LR 5.4

  • Some of my thumbnails disappeared, but the photos are still in the iPhoto L

Can anyone help me to get my missing thumbnails back to the iPhoto window? Some of them disappeared for no apparent reason. The files themselves are still in the iPhoto Library folder (both original and modified folders), but they are not showing up in the iPhoto window as thumbnails. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks,

I'm afraid it didn't work. When I launched iPhoto while pressing Option + Command, I was given 4 options:
    1. Rebuild the Photos' small thumbnails
    2. Rebuild all the photos' thumbnails (this may take a while)
    3. Rebuild the iPhoto Library database
    4. Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto Library folder
I've tried #s 1 and 2, and they didn't work. I'm not sure what options 3 and 4 mean, so I don't know if I should try them.
Can anyone help? Thank you very much,

Just upgraded iTunes to version 11.0.2.26...... now have no music or apps..... they are still in the iTunes library on the pc, just not in the iTunes interface.... ideas anyone..?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Note with iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show all your purchases with cloud icons that allow them to be streamed or downloaded from Apple's servers.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
If, for some inexplicable reason, the media has been removed from your computer see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 imports from nikon D7100 are flat

My iphoto 9.5.1 imports from nikon D7100 are flat, and the iPhoto controls do not seem to give as much control as earlier version i am upgrading from.

Export the photo out of iPhoto via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export  menu option with Kind = Original to the Desktop and view them with Preview.  Do they look flat there?
Are you shooting RAW or JPEGs?

  • Why is my library 200+GB bigger after importing from Iphoto to Aperture

I recently got a new imac and decided to start using Aperture to manage my huge library. Previously I was using Iphoto 9 in Mountain Lion. My original Iphoto library is 687GB. I exported it to my external drive and works great from there.
Now I have the new Imac with Mavericks and just got Aperture 3.5.1. I have opened the iphoto library original in this new computer and it upgraded to the new version of Iphoto that I have here (9.5.1). Everything looks good.
From my understanding this is a managed library since I only exported the library file and everything is there.
After making sure the iphoto library file was working well I decided to go ahead and import to aperture. I decided to do this since I thought it would be a much better way to go with such a big library. The original iphoto library has around 9,200 photos and videos.
I created a new aperture library in another big external drive (Drobo) and imported the original to Aperture doing File - Import- Library and choosing the original located in an external drive.
After 24hrs of working finally I can see the new library appear in Aperture. One problem I have is that it is going extremely slow compared to the same library in Iphoto, but that is another topic.
In the new aperture library I see the exact same amount of pictures and projects appear however the library appears to be 930GB. According to what I have read in other discussions I have tried to find in Aperture using the keyword search to see how many of these photos/videos have a keyword of iphoto original (vs new masters that could have been created from edited versions of the originals. If I do "iphoto original" in my search nothing appears (although it keeps "processing" the search after a couple of hours (yes, that is how slow it is working now). Is that already something wrong? Is this keyword added automatically when you import from Iphoto?
I would really like to fix this since I still have two other libraries (37GB) that I would like to merge with this one. Is that crazy? Could I expect such a big library to work well? I am new to Aperture but so far I am not impressed at all.
The only file I have to work on is the one I have in the external drive since I already got rid of the old computer....
Any ideas on how to solve this problem? Would appreaciate any help.
    Thank you!

Your library is big, but nothing out of the ordinary and well within Apertures capabilities.
It's hard to say definitively why the library has grown so, but ultimately it won't matter, once you have your library working well and you configure Aperture how you want it to operate, and you tidy up any unwated artefacts from the import, your library size will become exactly the size it needs to be.
There are a number of possible explanations for why things are going slow.
First, check how you have formatted your Drobo storage. The file system requirements for Aperture are described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3252
Next, having chosen to import your iPhoto Library, you have essentially created a new environmet with its own preferences controlling things like previes, faces, places and so on. These could explain both the size and any (temporary) performance issues.
With Aperture running, press SHIFT+CMD+0 (zero). This will show you the activity window so you can see if Aperture is performing any follow-up tasks relating to the import such as building previews, building thumbnails, detecting faces and son on.
If so, allow it time to finish. Once it's finished all the post import activity, it will settle down and begin to operate in a more optimised fashion.
Depending on the history of you old iPhoto library, there could be some clean-up work do in terms of edited copies of originals. Old versions of iTunes used distructive edits, meaning you got an edited copy of your original. Aperture doesn't work this way and you will need to decide if you want to keep those (for example stack them with tier orginals) or if you want to redo any of them using Apertures non-destrutive tools. Later versions of iPhoto used a similar non-destructive approach which will carry over, so it's just any very old edits you may have to make descisions for.

  • Destroyed Library in iPhoto 08 after import from 09

This is a bummer: I have iPhoto 09 on my new MacBook and 08 on my iMac at home. As I imported my pictures from "on the road" on my MacBook, I made the library available and opened it from my iMac (08). I then imported the photos from the 09 library.
The first time I did this, the pictures from 09 were in the 08 library, but no thumbnails were shown at all. So I deleted them and did the import again. And presto, they showed up fine.
The next time I started up iPhoto, it indicated that "this new version... rebuild Thumbnails". I cancelled out, as I needed to send a photo by email. At the next start, I went ahead and let it "rebuild" (whatever). After that, only the last three events - i.e. the ones I had imported from 09 - were visible.
I did a library rebuild. I purchased "iPhoto Library Manager" and did a rebuild via that. Nothing helped. The photos are still there, but the entire library seems to be completely shot.
Before I laboriously start re-importing all the pictures from the library - does anyone have any other ideas? Delete some file to have iPhoto rebuild it, etc? I would very much like to not have to redo everything - I've read other people's accounts of re-imports and they are a real pain - especially with 50+gigs of photos.
    Thank you!

    Hans
I was hoping for an error message with iPhoto Library Manager not iPhoto. It will usually cough something up if it has a problem.
My TM certainly does back up iPhoto. I'm not sure why yours wouldn't. Try post on the TM forum here

for more info and help with that.
Here's my back up strategy: pick and choose as you think fit:
My Library lives on my iMac.
It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.

  • Hi, using iphoto 6, i suddenly lost albums: they are still in the directory, but no pictures in some albums.Using finder, I can locate the pictures and even get preview. But impossible to import them. Anyone can help? thanks

Hi, using iphoto 6, i suddenly lost albums: they are still in the directory, but no pictures in some albums.Using finder, I can locate the pictures and even get preview. But impossible to import them. Anyone can help? thanks

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Merge JPEG and RAW after import from iPhoto

    Hi,
camera is set to shoot JPEG + RAW, iPhoto manages after import from camera as two separate files.
I want to transition from iPhoto to Aperture.
After importing from iPhoto into Aperture, is there any chance to merge the files in a way similar to how Aperture merges jpeg + raw when importing directly from camera?
    Thx

When I click on Faces, it's empty, the import from iPhoto forget to import faces?
    Hello Kris,
How did you imort from iPhoto? If you import using the Aperture Apllication menu
         File -> Import -> iPh.oto Library
then all your Faces should be transferred from iPhoto.
Which of the two buttons in Aperture do you use to show your "Faces"? There is the "Faces" button in the Library panel and the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar. Both behave differently. The "Faces" button in the Library panel  will reveal all faces, whereas the "Faces" Button in the Toolbar will only show the faces detected in the in the currently selected item (folder, project). So it may appear that faces are missing, even if they are included in the Aperture Library.

  • Iphoto faces gone after import from icloud

Hi I am using iphoto 9.6(910.29) in Yosemite and have around 8000 photos in the library and faces recognised for about 30 people so there are thousands of entries in the db.
After importing about 5 photos from icloud to prepare for a slide show at a funeral next week I went to id the faces on the imports and list of possible faces seemed to shift to my iphone contacts , not the list of people who's faces I already ID'd in iphoto
So the effect is I have lost the faces already identified and now only have three entries on my faces corkboard. I tried turing icloud shareing off and on to no effect.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to roll this back?

  • When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop.. won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not... need to fix this

When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop... won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not

If you are using Photoshop from within iPhoto the following may help with the workflow.  However, we do need to know the answers to the questions posed by Terence and Larry to be able to help you.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

  • IPhoto library chaos after importing from eksternal hard drive

    Hi
I just got my first Mac Book pro and started to import my 15.000 photos which are stored on a consumer NAS-disk by via old windows PC.
The pictures are originally organized in folder by year and months.
The result is absolutely chaos.....  The number of pictures is quadrupled.
After (a looong time) I get one "event"-folder where I see my original files and one event (or folder?) named with a bunch of letter and numbers, ( ie "7gdaskk5klj3mjll54kj4lk6j4k4") where the same pictures are stored THREE times. It seems to be one version as the original, one low-resolution and one version with a different aspect or view.
It's absolutely impossible to navigate through all this. I thought managing pictures was one of the advantages with Mac - I am not sure any longer
Am I doing something wrong or is there a trick that can streamline my picture library?
I have tried both to import with and without copying pictures to library. Same result.

How are you browsing your imported photos? This looks like you were browsing the iPhoto library using the Finder and not using iPhoto's user interface in the main application window.
When iPhoto imports photos it will store them in the iPhoto library and also additional files to speed up the browsing. It will create a preview of the edited version to share with the Media browser and a thumbnail to be used in the browser. All these files will be stored in subfolders of the library with cryptic names. Browse your photos using iPhoto's interface and don't access them directly in the Finder. You are risking to corrupt the library this way. After all, it is iPhoto's job to manage and to retrieve the photos for you.
