Airport Express - airTunes setup not selectable - grayed out

Hi, in iTunes, I cannot select my 'air tunes' setup - it is grayed out. I created this a few years ago. I have all other normal internet connectivity through the airport express. It is connected via ethernet to a cable modem.
I cannot find any setting in iTunes to delete the airTunes setting and/or create a new one.

Welcome to the discussion area!
It sounds like you will need to perform a factory default reset on the AirPort Express.
Power down the Express
Hold in the reset button and while you continue to hold the reset button in, plug the Express back in to power
Keep holding the reset button until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly and then release
Note that when you reset the Express, it broadcasts a network with a default wireless network name like Apple Network xxxxxx, so you will need to log on to that network so that AirPort Utility will be able to communicate with your device.
Then reconfigure the Express again by opening AirPort Utility and clicking Continue to follow the guided setup to reconfigure your Express. You can choose to enable or not enable AirTunes during this setup procedure.

  • Regarding an Apple TV and an existing Airport Express/AirTunes setup

alright, i think i'm going to make the jump now for the new Apple TV. but i do have a few questions, particularly re: my existing Airport Express/AirTunes and wiring since i'm really maxed out in terms of open ports that i have left.
—my HDMI will have to go through a new HDMI smart switch hub into my older plasma that has one HDMI input. no problem, i've researched the smart switch, and realize the Apple TV may go in the low priority input since it seems to throw a continous current. if anyone LOVES their smart switch, throw me a bone here.
--however, i will need to go audio optical out into my receiver based on my current setup. and my receiver's optical inputs are all currently used. however, one is in use by a nearby Airport Express. since that AE has been used for AirTunes for years, i assume i can now safely ditch it's optical out since i will now be running my music through the Apple TV instead, correct? and therefore i will have my receiver's optical input now freed up, and there goes my Apple TV wire instead. just looking for verification here.
--since this AE is right there, will I get any speed advantage to the Apple TV by dropping an Ethernet cable from the AE's output into the Apple TV's Ethernet input, rather than relying on a pure wireless signal? my assumption is no, since they are both receiving the signal from my Airport Extreme on the other side of the house, but i thought it was still a worthwhile question.
--this particular AE has also been acting as a WiFi range extender (it's b,g,n). so i guess i will still just leave it plugged into the wall, but turn off it's AirTunes sharing, correct?
--(side note: if i wind up not needing the AE's optical out, and i don't need it's Ethernet out, i will then be moving it across the room since i'm ridiculously tapped out of electrical outlets by my entertainment center. and that's where the Apple TV power cord will go. just a boring fyi)
--i truly think i had another important question, but i cannot remember it. so i'll repost when it comes to me.
so i think i know my answers, but i always learn in these forums. so any thoughts or feedback is greatly appreciated.
    thank you!

Older AppleTV did not play well with some switches, so it'd be sensible to get advice about one that definitely works with the new unit. They may have ironed out HDMI glitches but too early to tell.

Yes, the AppleTV will replace the Airport for optical audio duties from your iTunes library. Add an iPhone/iPas Remote app and it should work very nicely as it did with the 1st gen.

I doubt it would be of any benefit as AppleTV has wireless n anyway.

In that case if it's an extender you may need it on for AppleTV to pick up the wireless, though I think I'd try and see if it receives the main signal adequately first.

    I know that feeling.

  • Airport Express/AirTunes Not Working with New Verizon FIOS Connection

I was just set up with the new Verizon FIOS high speed internet, and now my Airport Express/AirTunes will not connect to my remote speakers like it did previously. The option for them is still there on iTunes, however when I select them, I get the horizontal barber pole for a minute, then the speaker selction goes back to computer.
    In more detail:
Previously I had a Comcast internet connection which went through a Linksys wireless router. My Mini picked up the internet with this connection. Then I had an Airport Express hooked up to some remote speakers. They worked fine. Now, I have the Verizon wireless router hooked in directly to my Mini through the ethernet cable. I see the wireless network created by the Verizon router. I still see the wireless network created by the Linksys router. However, my iTunes can not connect to my AE/AirTunes speakers.
Note, I did reset the AE and then using Airport Setup Assistant, tried to locate it again, but it came up with nothing (other than my neighbor's new Verizon router).
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Still no luck. The green light is on for the AE.
Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi,
I am currently replying to this as it shows in the iChat Community.
I have asked the Hosts to move it to Snow Leopard  (you should not lose contact with it through any email links you get)
I also don't do Wirelss printing so I can't actaully help either.

  • Airport Express B/G not visible on Airport Utility / Airtunes not working

    Hi Everybody,
I'm just experiencing a Airport Express/Airtunes Problem! Everything was working fine. I setted up this 1/2 year old Airport Express B/G as the only device via ethernet cable next to my FritzBox DSL Modem to have a wireless network. I use it for Airtunes / Printer Sharing & Wireless Networking. 1 Week ago I visited my friend, who has a new Airport Express N and we tried to extend his my network thru My AX. As I got back home, I wasn't able to find my airport via airport utility, so i hard reseted it and reconfigured it as I told above. Everything was working fine for about one hour until the music stopped and until then this device could not be found via Airport Utility and iTunes doesn't offer me an option to play music via Airtunes anymore.
But the crazy thing is: I have Internet, Printer Sharing is possible & my roommate can play music via Airtunes using his Windows XP PC and even see the device via the utility.
I tried some settings with the networking security, but there appears no difference neither in iTunes than in the Utility.
    Help much appreciated!
    Cheers

This morning a firewall security message showed up: Allow connections of myDNSresponder and Config...? I allowed all connections, it worked for maybe one hour and disappeared again. So I decided to set my firewall settings to "allow all incoming connections" which was set to "set access for specific services and applications.
Now everything works really fine with the airport express!
    Have A Nice Day

  • Airport express green but not showing up in airport utlitity nor airtunes

    Hi,
I'm  trying to troubleshoot a problem for my parents. They have a westell dsl modem wireless access point in their office. To give them better reception in the rest of the house I hooked up an old airport express I had lying around. It works fine and has extended the network perfectly  (green light etc.) BUUUTTT why does neither the airport utility nor an ipad, nor itunes "see" the speakers or the even the express ?
    What am I missing?
I wouldn't have to have an all apple networking? I seem to remember that i have used the express at hotels and it showed up no problems...
    Thanks,
    Philly
Airport Express is one of the first ones. Computers running lion and mountain lion. iDevices on the latest 5.X

    Hi Carolyn
Thanks for your reply. I'm running 10.6.4.
Unfortunately - no luck with that solution. The Kitchen Airport Express also does not show up in the air tunes on my Apple TV.
I have had no problems with getting airport expresses to show up in air tunes before adding this Dlink to my set up - I think it is something to do with the fact that the DLink is plugged into my Airport extreme. (I have tried DHCP off and on).
    Thanks

  • Airport Express 802.11g Not Cooperating

So for the longest time I had an Airport Express (802.11g) connected to my Time Capsule (802.11n first gen) with an xBox 360 hooked up to the Express via ethernet cable and it allowed my 360 to access the internet so I could use Netflix and whatnot.  A couple of months ago the Express stopped working well and constantly had to be disconnected and reconnected to its power supply in order to function properly.  Now it has completely ceased to work, so I restored it to factory defaults and nothing is working.  First I tried to just have it join my wireless network, but once it connected the ethernet port stopped working.  I didn't remember this happening before, so I went online and found out that joining a wireless network disables the port for some reason and that the only solution was to set up a WDS.  So I tried this with my Time Capsule as the main and my Express as a remote (note: I am using Airport Utility 5.6 so that I can actually detect my Express) and on the Airport Utility Window it says that everything is fine and that both devices are reporting "Normal" as their status (green light).  That is true for the Time Capsule, but the Airport Express keeps flashing its amber light of doom.  When I clicked on the status for the Express, it said that the Express wasn't reporting any issues, so I have no clue what to do.  Both devices are on the same channel, and the Time Capsule Radio Mode says that it is compatible with 802.11b/g devices.  Also, the Airport Express, even though I selected "Allow Wireless Clients" cannot be accessed unless I connect it to my computer with an ethernet cable.  Does anybody know how I can fix this?  Any help at all is appreciated.  Thanks!

UPDATE: I reset the unit, and was able to configure it using AirPort Setup Assistant, but although the light is still solid green, iTunes and AirPort Admin still can't see it.

  • Using Airport Express / Airtunes to play audio from Safari / OSX?

Just bought my first Airport Express. Can I use Airport Express / Airtunes to play out audio from Safari / OSX (or other applications) to my home stereo?

    Hi Fenneberg:
Welcome to Apple Discussions and congrats on your AE purchase!
You'll need a 3rd application to stream music to your AE from other applications like Safari. It's called Airfoil and it can be found at: http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/
    I hope this helps!

i use itunes to play music through my airport express but sometimes the songs cut out sporatically.  a song will be playing along then all of a sudden there is intermittant music and silence. What could be causing this?

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • Can I strem audio to my airport express? but not only iTunes

Can I stream audio to my airport express? but not only iTunes. where can I suggest to Apple make some about it?

Hello keer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can I stream audio to my airport express? but not only iTunes.
Yes. To stream audio, other than from an iTunes source, to an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) you will need a third-party product, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil.
where can I suggest to Apple make some about it?
You can submit suggestions to Apple at the following link: Apple Product Feedback

Ok, if you are connecting the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to the existing wireless network, then the DSL in the next room is most likely a combination DSL modem and wireless router. Thanks for clarifying that for me.
Although they may only be separated by a single wall, the building material used in that wall may be enough to prevent the AX from receving a "good" signal from the DSL router.
Since I don't know what computing equipment you have available, please check out this AirPort User Tip: AirPort - Optimal Base Station Placement to see if you can get some SNR measurements at the location of your AX. To do this properly, you will want to power-off the AX and only get these measurements for the DSL router.

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.

  • Airport Express + iTunes 10 not working with Airtunes, but 2nd Airport does

    Hey,
at first I have to excuse myself for my English, i come from Germany.
I looked around in the topics but i didn't find anything that helped me.
I own 2 Airport Express stations since nearly a year.
One of it creates a Wi-Fi network and is connected to a switch, which is connected to the internet.
The other Airport Express is set up as repeater and everything works fine, even Airtunes.
But then i noticed, that the Wi-Fi creating one was not able to work with Airtunes, which it was some weeks ago. I think this has something to do with iTunes 10. The other Airport works well with Airtunes with the same Macbook and speakers.
So I made a new set up on the Wi-Fi Airport, because some guys reported, that the problem would disappear then, but it didn't.
But I wondered why my iPhone 4 is now abled to play music via Airtunes with the new iOS 4.2.1 on the "broken" Airport, because my mac was not abled to do so and I thought of returning it to the Apple Store.
So how do i get this thing running again? I would like to use both of the Airports to listen to music in different rooms with my Macbook.
I would be glad for any help, thanks in advance
    TheShima

    @TheShima,
First open up the airport utility and see if both AE's show up. If not:
This would be my guess, unplug them both for 10 seconds, plug the network creating one back into the wall, them plug the second one back in after the first has a green light. If that doesn't work, "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Finally if that doesn't work reset them, recreate the network reviewing the the advanced settings in "manual setup" and looking for the option that allows speaker sharing.
Does anyone know how to get movie audio to play through the airport express? I really want this to exist my wife's laptop speakers are awful and I would love to have the audio streamed to my airport express.
