Airport Express as Sound card

Does anyone know how I can get my airport express setup as a sound card that can be selected as the output for other music application other than iTunes? Like DJing software?

To send any audio on your Mac to the AirPort Express, you might want to take a look at Airfoil for Mac

  • Airport Express as wifi card for Xbox Live, then connect to Extreme network

My son just got xbox Live and we're trying to use Airport Express as wifi card for xbox (connected to xbox via ethernet). We use Airport Extreme as router for the house.
We're having trouble setting up Xbox Live, keep getting stuck at getting the xbox to communicate/access the web. Error reads "can't obtain IP address from router... make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on network.. also make sure MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled... "
We dont' know what else to do. I'm at wit's end before giving Gates $100... Anyone know how to get connected?
    Thank you!

You can also perform a simple test to verify if you have an internet connection at the ethernet port on the AirPort Express.
Move a laptop near the Express, turn off the wireless on the laptop, and connect to the Express using an ethernet cable. See if you can open your browser and get a good solid internet connection.
If you can, the Express is setup correctly and you know that you have an internet connection reaching all the way to the Xbox.
If you can't then there is a configuration error somewhere and it will need to be identified and corrected.

  • IPAD/IPOD playing music to a Airport Express - No Sound?

I have an IPAD and an IPOD.  IPAD is 4th gen, IOS7.  IPOD is 4th gen, IOS6.
Airport express is the new one second generation.  Airport Express is wired to my home network, and its in bridged mode with wireless off.  Its purpose is only to play music via airplay.
When I turn on airplay on my IPAD or IPOD I can always see my Airport Express.  It always allows me to select it as my output speaker.  However, only sometimes does music actually play through my Airport Express / Stereo setup.  The IPAD or IPOD always shows the music playing in its music playing app.  It appears as if its working.  I just cant always hear it.
If Im trying to play music but no sound is coming out of my stereo, I can power off my IPAD or IPOD, then try playing music again and it will work.  This is a work-around to my problem that really bugs me.  I want to properly diagnose this problem so that I do not have to power cycle my iDevice before using airplay.
Ive read many posts about Airport Express sound problems.  Most problems seem to be either short audio drop-outs, or not detecting the Airport Express.  I think my problem is different.
I have read some people had success downgrading their Airport Express firmware to 7.6.1 to fix the short audio drop-outs.  I have not tried this as my problem is not worth audio drop-outs.  Its with no sound at all playing.
I am begginging to think the Airport Express isnt as rock-solid for airplay as I thought.
    QUESTIONS:
Are there any tools available for troubleshooting this type of problem?  The knowledge base articles Ive read from Apple have been no help.

  • Airport Express or Extreme Card?

I have an airport extreme base station with cable modem for my ibook. I now have a second hand computer - (imac 10.2.8) and would like to connect it. I haven't a clue which I should get so I can have the internet on both.

kandushka, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no AirPort Express card.
    If your iMac is:
an iMac G3 CRT with a clock speed of 400 MHz or faster, it has an internal slot for the original AirPort card. The AirPort card adapter is also required to use the card in an iMac G3. The AirPort Extreme card is NOT compatible.
an iMac G3 CRT Blueberry with a clock speed of 350 MHz, it has an internal slot for the original AirPort card. The AirPort card adapter is also required to use the card in an iMac G3. The AirPort Extreme card is NOT compatible.
an iMac G4 with a clock speed of 700 or 800 MHz, it has an internal slot for the original AirPort card. The AirPort Extreme card is NOT compatible.
an iMac G4 with a clock speed of 1 GHz or higher, it has an internal slot for the AirPort Extreme card. The original AirPort card is NOT compatible.
an iMac G5 and does not have built-in wireless, it has an internal slot for the AirPort Extreme card. The original AirPort card is NOT compatible.

  • Stand alone Airport Express for Sound system

    Hi
Can I have an Airport Express on it's own connected to a sound system.
I have a normal (Sky) Wireless router at home and no other Aplle networking.
I want to be able to airplay music to my sound system and was told that an Airport express would allow me to do this.
But, My iphone will not find it, My ipad will not find it and I can not connect through the utility.  I have tried so many things but can not make it work.
Will it ever work?  Can I do this?  How?  Please help...
    Cheers
    Richard

Can I have an Airport Express on it's own connected to a sound system.
Yes. The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can be configured to provide its own wireless network for the purpose of iTunes streaming. It does NOT require an Internet connection.
The issue you would have is that you would need to switch wireless network between the goal of streaming vs. Internet access.
To resolve this, you would just need to reconfigure the AX to "join" the Sky's wireless network so you do both simultaneously. (ref: AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless tab > Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network.)

  • Will Airport Express transmit sound from an iMac's "DVD Player"?

I am playing a DVD on my Mac’s DVD Player application, and projecting the movie to a screen at the front of the room.  Can I wirelessly transmit the sound track to a powered speaker at the front of the room via my Airport Express?

You should be able to if you use a third-party application like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil.

  • AirTunes using Airport Express - Low sounds level in speakers

Recently, I started having a problem with the sound level coming from the speakers connected to my Airport Express. The setup worked fine until a few weeks ago.
    Actions I have tried:
    (1) a hard reset of the Airport Express - no improvement
    (2) connecting speakers directly to laptop - sounds level was great
    Software I'm using:
    - iTunes v7.1.1.5
    - Airport Express Firmware v6.2
Thank you in advance for any help.
IBM Laptop ThinkPad   Windows XP Pro

I suggest that you upgrade your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) firmware to version 6.3.

  • Airport express low sound volume

I've had an airport express for a few months now and have been happily using it with my external stereo system to stream music. However, recently the volume coming from the airport express has basically disappeared - there is almost no signal at all. I have to turn up the volume on my amplifier all the way to hear any sound, and at that level the sound is covered with static and is gross.
I've seen another post about a similar situation with an existing airport user, and it looks like I have a similar problem. Note that I did not change anything with the configuration between the amp and the airport express, i have the "disable itunes volume with remote speakers" option on. I've tried the airport with multiple other amplifiers and nothing works. I'm convinced that the airport is malfunctioning, perhaps its internal preamp is blown?
Does anyone have any experience with this?

    Thank you Totem ; )
But unfortunately, I don't think we are talking about the same thing... Effectively, I've noticed a loss between iTunes 6.0.1 and iTunes 6.0.4 when I downgrade, but my problem, our problem here, is that the sound hasn't a 33% loss but really a 80/90% !!! I've got to push up the volume so much that if I plug my ipod with the same cable at the same place, my ears bleed (quite ; ) )...
    Of course,
    - I've checked the "disable itunes volume with remote speakers" and my ipod is at its maximum...
    - I've tried airfoil (with RealPlayer and VLC) and this is the same, a very low/weak sound...
    - I've downgrade the Airport Express firmware to 6.1.1
I've got a party at home tomorrow... :_(
Do I have to consider the airport express as broken ?

  • Airport express: no sound with iphone but works with ipad and mac

    Hello,
I have a problem with my airport express. With my iphone (5, ios8) i can connect to it but there is no sound when i play something. However, when i connect to it with my mac (mini, 10.9.5) or ipad (ios8), everything is fine. I tried restarting of all the devices, including the router, but it does not help. There is no problem with the iphone; streaming to apple tv works fine. Does anyone know how to fix this, or what could be the problem?

Did you resolve this I have the same problem with all my mobile devices iphone 5, ipad mini and ipod touch 5th Gen all wuiing latest software.  It also works fine with my PC and iTunes.
I have managed to get sound on the odd occasion for a few minutes but drops out, it also stops if I swap back to the mobile device and back to the airport express (this never works).

  • Airport Express - No Sound with Airplay

    I'm at my witts end
    Set Up:
Very Simple - Airport Express connected to comcast modem.
No problem with wi-fi connection to internet.
    Problem Statement:
No sound out of speakers using Airplay.
    Facts:
    1) In iTunes I can select my speakers (connected to Airport Express).
    2) When I select my speakers, the music will stop playing from my device, but no sound comes out of the speakers themselves.
    3) No sound when plugging in ear buds to the airport express.
    4) Speakers work when plugged into the device.
    5) All software/firmware is up to date.
    Misc Questions:
    1) I have tried nearly every configuration I can think of in the airport utility...and I simply get nothing. Are there certain settings necessary?
    2) Is IvP6 a signficant factor?
    3) Is it possible my audio jack on the airport express is malfunctioning?
    4) Is there anyway to test it?
I've exhausted the threads on this issue, so any fresh feedback would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.
    C

    1) I have tried nearly every configuration I can think of in the airport utility...and I simply get nothing. Are there certain settings necessary?
None that I can think of. It appears that you have everything configured properly.
    2) Is IvP6 a signficant factor?
I only found IPv6 to be an issue when used in conjuction with Bonjour on Windows-based PCs. On Macs I found that it doesn't matter if this networking protocol is enabled or not ... as far as AirPlay is concerned.
    3) Is it possible my audio jack on the airport express is malfunctioning?
Yes, or the audio circuitry, specifically the DAC built-in the Express. When substituting a pair of stereo headphones (or earbuds) you are only testing the analog audio output of this port.
    4) Is there anyway to test it?
You've already tested the analog part of the audio port. To test the digital side, you would need to connect a optical digital connector/cable to the port. One simple test is to verify that the other end of the optical cable has a bright light appearing from it. Better still, connect it to an audio receiver that has the appropriate optical digital audio input port to verify that sound is present.

  • Airplay from iPhone to Airport Express - no sound?

We have two of the new Mac Minis, one new Airport Express and 4 iPhones in the house - and we can use Airplay from both PC´s to the Airport Express hooked up to the stereo - works fine!
And we can se the Airplaybutton on the iPhones and the name of the Airport Express - but we don´t get any sound when we push the button and it turns blue?
We have rebooted alle the devices, made restores, reconnected - but no sound? I just don´t get it?

    Same here:
    - iPhone 4 with iOS4.2;
    - Airport Express with latest firmware;
    - Airplay on iTunes 10.1 with Macbook Pro works fine on my home stereo equipment;
    - installation of iOS4.2 went fine;
    - rebooted already both iPhone and Airport Express;
    - Apple support told me to restore original settings on my iPhone, which I didn´t do but very much doubt would help anyway (the lady working for Apple Support didn't even know what "Airplay" was).
I think we are facing a bug and must wait for an Airport Express (or even iOS4.2) software update.

  • Airport Express - Movie sound on external speakers

Is is it possible to hear itune's movie/radio via the external speakers that are hooked on the airport express. Music works fine.
    Thanks.

I found this info given by rogue amoeba confirming my problem:
    http://rogueamoeba.com/support/knowledgebase/?showArticle=AirfoilVideoPlayer
I think my issue cannot be solved, I just wanted that my whole computer sound environment can be played via airport express. I will still need a cable to hear the sound of youtube, etc.
Very unsatisfying, I bought the Airport express because i thought it gives me a "one device solution". Marketing ********.
    Still, thanks for your help!

  • Airport express popping sound

I am experiencing random popping sound like when you plug in a guitar into an amp without turning down the amp first. I was wondering if anyone knew the cause of this since i dought that it is good for my speakers.
I currently have an express that I just got for xmas as well as insignia speakers plugged into them and I am running windows 7 on a hp hdx16 if that helps anyone with my problem

is there anything else i could do to make sure this popping stops?
Sorry, none that I can think of. You'll have to decide if drinking beer is more important than steaming iTunes.
also is it as bad for my speakers as I think it probbly is?
Unfortunately, yes. Each time you hear that "pop,"the speaker cone is most likely banging against its mechanical stops. Eventually, this will damage the speaker's ability to reproduce audio at its designed full range.

  • Airport Express only outputs sounds through left channel

Recently purchased a new airport express.
Sound is only audible through the left channel. Sound through the right channel is barely audible even at max volume (speakers and iTunes).
Speakers are fine (they work fine through the stereo, iPod earphones also only work through left channel).
If I turn sound enhance on and up to high, I can finally hear through the right channel, but only at about 40-50% of the left.
Is this a software issue, or bad hardware?
I've hard reset the airport express multiple times. Same issue whether wirelessly or connected via ethernet. This is running from iTunes 7 for Windows using a Linksys router.
      Windows XP Pro

Doesn't sound promising for the AX. Since it was
recently purchased, do you have the option to visit
your local Apple Store to either return it for
replacement or, at least, have them verify the
    problem?
The reason why I thought it might be software related was due to this effect of changing the sound enhancer, i.e by turning the sound enhancer on and setting it to high there was a considerable increase in sound output. If there was a loose connection somewhere I don't think I'd expect this behavior. It's almost as if the balance has been set all the way to the right.
Given that no-one seems to have seen this problem before (other than a unresolved single old post on the Airport Express board), it does seem that you're right and the AX needs replacing.

  • Windows Vista and Airport Express

I can connect my Airport Express to my wireless router via an ethernet cable and get up the configuration page - easy!
    Now for the difficult bit!
I cannot get Airport Admin Utility to recognise the Airport Express (base station in Apple Speak!) when I disconnect from the router.
Airport Express really sounds a great way to connect ITUNES to remote speakers etc but it is necessary to get it working with Windows Vista and get the wireless function working.Anybody sucessfully done it? Please only respond if you have managed to do this personally!

William - I am in a similar place.... I have an airport express running as an extension to my home wireless network. I have a TC that I use as my router. My macs can connect to my network (of course) but the windows vista laptop (sony vaio) does not...... HELP! Have you been able to get any answers??
