Airport Express audio: total washout?

I just got a new Airport Extreme base station (I had previously been using a Linksys wireless router) and Airport Express and I'm having a very negative experience trying to use the latter with iTunes (which was the main purpose of buying it in the first place).
The audio streaming from iTunes to the Airport Express doesn't play continuously. Instead, I get a few seconds of audio, followed by a few seconds of silence, followed by a few seconds of audio, and so on. It drives me nuts. When I first set everything up, it seemed to work more or less OK for the first few minutes, but then this problem cropped up and has only been getting worse -- now I'm lucky if I get 5 seconds of uninterrupted audio. When the audio drops out, the timer on iTunes stops advancing during the silence, then starts moving again when the audio restarts.
Now the tech details:
*I'm seeing this problem from both of my computers: an OS X G5 running 10.4.3 which is connected to the Airport Extreme base station via Ethernet and a Windows XP machine connecting to the network via wireless. Both are using the latest version of iTunes.
*I'm using WPA authentication on my network, and allowing both B and G connections.
*I've updated the firmware for both the base station and the Airport Express with the updates that were released today (1/4/06).
Anyone have any ideas?

Ok ... I retract my comment about 6.3. I'm not sure what happened but it eventually settled down. I did not have wireless phone or microwave operating when it happened, but I was using Bluetooth when it started (just in case that has an effect) but even after I stopped using Bluetooth, the audio was cutting out every few seconds.

  • Airport Express Audio Via Home Stereo

    Hi,
Ive got my Airport Express to play iTunes through my hifi system (after lots of swearing and stuff), but im really disappointed to see it doesnt seem I can play any other audio - for example if im watching tv online etc/any audio not coming for iTunes.
Does anyone know if and how I can get other audio from my laptop to play through my stereo via airport express?

Hello andygunner. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know if and how I can get other audio from my laptop to play through my stereo via airport express?
Yes. You will need to use a third-party application, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil, to play audio sources other than iTunes through your AirPort Express.

  • HT201343 Apple Tv mirror + Airport Express audio output = How to?

I want to mirror my MacBook to the Apple Tv but I want to send the audio to the Airport Express.
If I ask my Apple Tv to send the output to the Airport, it works just fine.
If, after that, I use the iPhone to mirror the screen and watch some video on youtube or Twitch, it works fine either.
But if I use my MacBook Pro to mirror the screen, the audio output is sent to my TV through the HDMI cord.
Is that any way that I can solve this?
What I want to do is just mirror my MacBook screen with the audio coming out through the Airport Speaker.
    Thanks for any help, folks!

    Hi wennberginho!
I have a couple of articles that should be able to help you with this issue. If you have a 1st generation Apple TV, you will want to reference this article:

  • Mavericks mirroring with airport express audio

I am using a Macbook running Mavericks to mirror my desktop.  I am sending it to a projector connected to an AppleTv.  Currently the audio comes out only on the tiny projector speaker.
Can I stream the audio to a speaker connected to an Airport Express?
I have tried this but can not get the audio to work except when I play music in itunes.

This is exactly what I would like to do as well. I have found a quasi work around through the use of the app 'beamer' on my macbook. It allows me to play movies from my macbook, sent to my projector via ATV, which then sends the audio to my AE.
However I cannot get it to work with desktop mirroring. It seems like a bug/oversight on Apple's part rather than any big issue that requires complex solutions though....
would be great if they could solve this.. *hint hint*....

  • Airplay Station OR Airport Express + audio câble?

    Hi,
If i buy an Airplay Audio Station, will I need an Airport Express to broadcast music?
    Thanks

The only base station with dial-up capability (in addition to traditional ethernet equipped modem capability) is the AirPort Extreme Base Station w/modem. Check the Apple Store to look over the details, and make sure you are looking at the AEBS with the modem (there is also a version without a dial-up modem which will not work in your application).

  • AirPort Express Audio Dropouts - Any assistance gratefully received!

Yes, I'm fairly sure this is an old chestnut rearing its ugly head again but I haven't yet found a solution to my problem.
I have a Dell laptop running Windows XP, a Vigor 2800 Router and two AirPort Express devices which seldom last much beyond three songs before intermittently dropping audio.
    It's a tad frustrating.
Could any kind soul please run through the best things to check by way of a possible resolution.
    Many many thanks,
    James

Aha! No I hadn't seen that article - thanks for that.
I should have said I mostly get dropouts when I stream to two AirPorts simultaneously and I'm now thinking that the two wifi connections are interfering with each other.
Either that or I need a more powerful machine!
    Thanks,
    James

  • Airport Express Audio Port Blocked?

Hello all, I'm setting up my Airport Express to play music through my speakers. I've previously done this with no problems, but when I've come to set it up again, this time, the audio port isn't deep enough for the audio jack to fit in.
The jack is a standard 3.5mm, and has been used with this Airport Express before.
The port doesn't appear to be blocked (I can see the led at the bottom).
There are no rattles and the Airport Express has been well looked after.
Any idea what could possibly be causing this?
    Cheers,
    Ollie.

I have had a word with my housemates, it would appear that one of them accidently snapped off the tip of a audio jack.
How would I go about removing this? Is there an easy way to open the Airport Express? or should I take it to the apple store?

  • Airport express - audio dropping

i'm using airport express for wireless internet and to play audio through a pair of powered speakers. it has worked fine in the past but lately has been dropping the audio constantly. i'm playing music through itunes and the track just stops, and the audio ceases. i'm only about 1 meter away from the airport.
    any ideas? thanks!

Same problem here. The audio drops seem to directly correlate with any and all web activity in Safari. Every time a new page has to load, Airport Express cuts out. I've had Airport Express (n) for a few months and only recently did this start happening.

  • Airport Express Audio Drop and Network issue

I have a Dell Laptop, DLink G604T router and Airport Express. When I first bought the airport express I successfully got it to join my existing Dlink wireless network and I could happily stream music wirelessly to the airport express and maintain a wireless internet connection through the Dlink router.
Since then I started having issues with audio drops to the Airport express and despite doing a lot of searching on the discussion forums and internet and trying different things have never solved the issue.
The one thing that does seem to work is if I create a new wireless network with the Airport Express rather than joining the existing Dlink one. I can then stream music flawlessly all day long. The down side is I then can't get internet access wirelessly at the same time. I have to disconnect from one network and connect to the other.
If I connect the dlink router to the airport express by ethernet and use the Dlink router just as a modem I think the issue will be resolved but this is not convenient due to position of router and airport express.
So the question is, Can I get the Dlink router to join the Airport Express Wireless network wirlessly rather than the AE joining the Dlink wireless network? Any thoughts on whether this is possible and if so how?
Dell Inspiron 500m   Windows XP Pro

I had one AE base unit, where network connection would disapear every other day. The light would still be green on the AE, but the signal from the AE could not be picked up nor seen by the computer. Only turning the AE off and back on, would make it appear and work again. I Changed the AE unit, and I dont have the problem any more. I didnt change any settings at all.
So in my case, it was the AE base unit that was malfunctioning.
I have also seen similar problems with a different cause: That the wifi network card in the computer wasnt connected properly. ..
I dont think its a software problem
    good luck

  • Function Airport Express audio over speakers Features

I am having trouble with my Airport Extreme Base station (AEBS) and Airport Express (AE) and setting them up to play audio over powered speakers or stereo.
Any information would be helpful, as at this point It looks like I will be returning the AE to Apple.
The AE is set up by having it join an existing network, with a AEBS 802.11n as the main base.
    Problems:
With iTunes, the play is sporadic and (as if a signal is being lost) and usually stops playing after a few minutes.
The distance between devices is less than 10 feet.
The play was less choppy by setting up the AE to receive directly from my laptop with no AEBS in between. However it appears to me that you are only able to be com=nnected to one wireless device at a time. In other words, I can be connected to the AEBS and internet, or be connected to the AE, but not both, unless they are set up as being server and client in same WDS.
I did try the Air Foil, and although it did play from other applications like Real player, it did nothing for the signal apparently cutting in and out. Its video player did not function at all, synchronized or not. It did play audio from iTnune downloaded video through Quicktime, but un synchronized.
My conclusion thus far is that either the AE I have is defective, or it simply is not capable of performing as advertised.
I am looking to hear if which of these scenarios is the more likely.
Not to rule out that I have some how set it up incorrectly, in which case correct instructions would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dan

    Thanks for the information.
I do wish it was simpler to get clear information about the real world efficacy of products. Before discussion forum, I asked 3 One to One people about how the AE would perform and phone support about what problem was.
I have determined that with my computer being closer to AEBS, the signal is lost less (and is acceptable) than when it is further away. It is interesting that in both instances the distance of computer from AEBS, is far less than the AEBS is from AE.
My 867 is starting to fall apart (literally many cracks developing) so I am looking at newer macbook pros. I am wondering, Is the performance of the airport card better at some point in the model progression of macbooks?

  • Streaming iTunes to Airport Express - Audio Hiccups

I have a Netgear wireless router connected to my PC, and, at the other end of the house, a Hawking Range Extender.  My Airport Express syncs with the range extender so that I can access my iTunes library on the PC and play through my sound system (where the Express is located).  I am using the Airport Utility on my iPad to access and play from iTunes.  All signals are strong, but when iTunes is streaming there is a "hiccup" every 10-15 seconds in the audio.  This is a very momentary pause.  Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, were yoiu able to resolve it?

you can only stream music to an airport express if you have selected that network from your list under the airport icon at the top of your screen... so if you have selected your itunes network then you obviously can't also be part of another wireless network to use the internet. The only way to do this is to make your itunes network a part of the network which is used to access the web. Airport express has profiles which enable you to setup multiple settings so when you take your airport into the office, reconfigure the airport using airport admin and have it 'join' your office network and make sure you give it the same network name as your office one. Then from your airport network list select the name and you will be able to both listen to music and surf.

  • Airport Express audio cutout, even through ethernet.

    Hi all,
I have my laptop wirelessly connected to my linksys router.
My airport express is wired to my stereo, and wired to my linksys router.
Music will very often cut out and give me a -3256 error. This is very irritating.
    Help
    Thanks,
    Mark

What's more important than just the signal value it the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR).
Since you already downloaded iStumbler, try using its Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the SNR. Within the Inspector's Properties, note the values for "signal" & "noise." Start with your MacBook near the Linksys, note the readings, and then, choose the locations where you will typically use your MacBook to stream iTunes.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your Linksys. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the router or your MacBook until they are within a 20dB SNR range of each other.

  • Airport express audio

Is analog audio output line level or preamp level?

Hello gcerdascr. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

    It is line level.

  • Airport express & digital audio through usb

Can airport express stream digital audio through usb to use with a usb DAC?

No. Digital optical audio is only available via the AirPort Express' audio port only.

  • Airtunes no longer working with AirPort Express? can anyone help?!

so i recently bought a refurbished airport express and i loved how i could stream audio over the wireless network via airtunes but the delay was a bit annoying so i took it upon myself to try and find a solution to this.
I bought a reverse audio splitter (1 female to 2 male) thinking that i could plug my speakers into the female end of the splitter, leave one of the male audio jacks plugged into the airport express, and the other male end into my computer so when i was at my desk the audio would go straight from my computer to the speakers (bypassing the airport altogether) and the delay problem with airtunes would be solved.
this worked for a little bit, but the next day when i went to play a song via airtunes it didnt work.. no error messages, just no sound.. i did some investigating and found that there was a red light coming from the audio jack on the airport express which i found out could mean that either it is in optical mode or that it is just dead..
But here's the real weird part!! so i also have the program called AirFoil to transmit audio from the internet to my speakers via the airport express, and the speakers connected to the airport can play itunes when AirFoil is connected to itunes even though the light is still red inside the airport audio jack!! weird huh?
Anyways, i just wanna know if there is anything that i can do to fix my AirTunes sound output since it seems like the audio jack on the airport express isnt totally dead??

I'm in the same boat. I can still get on the web with it, but neither airport utility or itunes can see it. disappointing to say the least.
