Airport express equivalent network password

I set up my airport express using WPA2 Personal. I entered my wireless password and all is fine. my macbook can connect w/o any problems. however, my roommate has a pc and the equivalent network password is 64 characters long. why is it so long and can i make it short? did i do something wrong?

You did nothing wrong. When you enter your "password" it generate a long code of letters and numbers according to a certain formula. The problem is that different manufacturers use different methods to generate the code or "key".
You can type in the word "password" on a PC and it will probably generate a different code than the Apple product would. So, although you type in the "password" exactly correctly, it won't allow the PC to connect because it doesn't generate the same code.
So, the PC has to use the same long code generated by the Apple product to be able to connect.

  • Airport Express WiFi network MAC address filtering not working

I have an Airport Express WiFi network which I bought and installed new in 2011. Initially I enabled MAC address access control and populated a list. It was working perfectly, I know, because a niece visiting tried to connect her iPhone and could not until  I added its MAC address to the allowed list. Now however, anyone can connect without being added to the list. I think I read somewhere that a recent firmware update permanently disabled MAC filtering in Airport Express, even when it was previously working? Can anyone enlighten me about what's going on here?

In a sense those are/were/should operate as two separate functions, which they did before recently.
They do operate as two separate functions.....but it all depends on how you have the default rule setup in Timed Access.
If the default rule in Timed Access is set to No Access.......then a wireless device cannot connect....even it has the password for the network.....unless it has been setup on the list of allowed devices in Timed Access.
I have checked this 3 times this evening to verify. It works as it always has, and as expected.
If the default rule in Timed Access is set to Unlimited, then any device can connect to the network if it has the password. Devices that are listed or specified in Timed Access will be allowed to connect at the specific times that have been set up for each device.
So, if you want to use the more traditional MAC Access Control settings, the default rule has to be set to No Access and then you must set up a rule for each device that you want to allow to connect to the network. Only devices on the Timed Access list will be allowed to connect to the network. Other devices will not be able to connect to the network....even if they have the correct password.
If a recent firmware update has changed things from what they have always been.....then I am not affected....and I should be if I am using the same firmware as others.

  • Linking Dell Laptop to existing/working Airport Express wireless network

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect a Dell Laptop (Inspiron 2500) running on Windows XP to an existing and functionning Airport Express wireless network set up for my girlfriend's iBook. It works perfectly for the iBook.
I have outfitted the Dell with a D-Link wireless G USB adapter and I see the network (i have the password) and it says I am connected to the network (even says connection is very good).
However, when I open the internet browser, nothing.
The network set up is: Cable to RCA Digital modem (model DCM425) to Airport Express (via ethernet) and to computer.
I have tried playing around with the Dell Laptop settings (IP, DSN, etc ...) and I have called everyone involved (including Apple) to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Nick
    Dell Laptop   Windows XP   iBook

    Thanks for the reply.
WEP is enabled. As far as the encryption, I'm not sure. I believe that it's 64-bit, as the password for the network is a five-letter word.
The funny thing, though, is that I had been using an IP address which I found on my girlfriend's Ibook, which allowed me to connect to her AEBS network, although the internet browser showed no connection.
Following directions from somebody else, I removed the IP address to enable DHCP, and then I was able to connect to other networks in the area (and the browser also connected to the internet) but I couldn't get onto her network anymore. Even with the password ...
    Any ideas?
If i'm supposed to upgrade to 128-bit, how should I go about doing that?
    Thanks again for the reply.
    What encryption are you using?
    Do you have WEP enabled?
The problem you are having probably lies with the
    encryption key.

  • I use Airport Express to network 3 iMacs to a DSL modem.  Recently, the network became undiscoverable to one of the iMacs.  Suggestions for a fix?

I use Airport Express to network 3 iMacs to a DSL modem.  The network has become undiscoverable to one of the computers. I have reset the base station to factory settings but this does not help.  The other two computers are unaffected. All 3 computers can access the internet when connected directly to the modem.  I suspect the problem might be the Airport card?  Suggestions?

Thx for the suggestion, although I didn't have to reset the SMC to fix the problem. The problem was the handshake between the security password and the designated network.  The following links gave me info for investigationg the problem.

I would recommend these web sites to anyone who is having problems setting up and/or maintaining a wifi system.
I discovered after reading one of the web references that if I disabled nework security the problem went away. This, however, was unacceptable.  Further experimentation showed that the solution to my problem was to change the name of my network while keeping the same password.  I tried only changing my password but that didn't help.  I still don't understand why only 1 of the 3 networked iMacs was affected.
Again, thx for your interest and reply.

  • HELP ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 no longer detects airport express wireless network

my ibook G3 OSX 10.2.8, airport admin utility software 3.1.1 no longer can detect the airport express wireless network (powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, airport admin utility 4.2; airport express, WEP protected, to DSL modem). i just installed an ipod driver update on the ibook, and wireless networking went down on restart. any help greatly appreciated!

    you name it : com.apple.airport.adminutility.plist
delete it and do as advised.
This isn't harmful, because it is only a preference list, so it will be created brandnew as soon as you re-setup the Airport stuff.
Mac OS X ( especially Jaguar ) has a tendency to corrupt some plists out of the blue, it is more or less harmless and can be fixed with recreating them plus permissions-repair.
Hint : repair permissions more than one time, it ALWAYS finds something to fix in Jaguar.
You cannot destroy something with these actions, because it is Unix maintance so usual routines.
A tool like cocktail or Onyx ( google them, onyx is freeware ) can help you run such ( and more ) routines on a scheduled base.
Always remember that OS X is no longer "the Mac OS", it is Unix with a nice Desktop, the critical things run hidden in the background, so it has to be treated like any Unix/Linux sort of OS, even if from the outside everything looks nice and kosher..

  • PCs suddenly no longer see Airport Express wireless network - please help!

    Hi,
I am new to this forum and I need help. Two days ago - without me making any changes to settings etc. my Airport Express wireless network at home was no longer visible to any of my devices except to the Powerbook (G4 OS 10.3.9) which controls it. From one second to the next two Vista laptops and my cell phone (Nokia, Symbian OS).
My Powerbook has no problem connecting through AE to the internet. The two laptops are both able to connect to other wireless networks so they don't seem to be the problem. I just don't understand what caused this sudden drop-off/invisibility.
I have already tried the following: resetting the base station, changing the channel on the base station (from automatic) removing the network security altogether (from WPA2). But none of the devices except the powerbook can now see or detect my network.
Please - if anyone knows what the cause of this problem could be or how to fix I would be very grateful!!

  • Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will - Help

Iphone will not connect to airport express extended network - macbook and ipad will without problems.
iphone will connect to base station no problems, I've restored settings and started again but still the same, the iphone picked up the network for the last couple of months, but not now ?

I'm having the same issue. My AExpress used to give a good signal strength on the far side of the house extending he network created by my Extreme. However, I've noticed lately that my iPhone does not receive the same strong signal it once did. AE has a green light, I've rebooted it, and my Extreme but there is no change in signal strength. Other than the green light, how can I tell if the Express is working if I don't get a good network signal?

  • "Equivalent Network Password" is grayed out

I'm trying to hook up my phone to my wifi.
It's asking for a WEP hex key.
I click on manual setup, then go to the menu item 'base station'
and I should be able to click on 'equivalent network password,' but it is grayed out.
Does anyone know what I can do to activate that option?
    thanks

I figured it out finally. Strange that I couldn't find this answer elsewhere, cause I found many people complaining about this same thing.
After you click on manual setup, click on wireless.
Then enter in your wireless password.
Then enter it again for 'verify password.'
Then have a look under the base station MENU.
Equivalent network password is no longer grayed out.

  • DHCP issues connecting a Macbook to an Airport Express/Extreme network

My fiancée's macbook sometimes won't connect to our network, while my MBP has no such problem. A wireless connection is successfully established, but it doesn't get an IP address assigned. I've tried turning on/off Aiport, renewing the DHCP release, but to no avail. It continues to have a self-assigned IP address.
Currently, a reboot (much to her annoyance) is the only known solution.
My network consists of an Airport Extreme base station (v5.7) and an Airport Express enabled as a WDS remote base station.
Any tips into how to better diagnose this problem will be much appreciated.
At the very least, is there a way to restart (SIGHUP?) the Airport daemon as if it were going through a reboot?
    Thanks

  • Multiple AirPort Express - Extending Networks

    Hello
I have been at it all morning trying to get it to work, no luck thus far.
The network I have at the moment consists of
Adsl modem > (cat5) Airport Extreme > (wirelessly extended by) Airport Express 1F > (wirelessly extended by) Airport Express 2F
I am running this network in a 3 storey building
    Ground floor - Airport Extreme
First floor - Airport Express 1F
Second floor - Airport Express 2F
The Express on the first floor picks up the network created by the Extreme on ground floor and successfully extends it to the second floor.
This is the part that is giving me a world of trouble.
The Express on the Second floor picks up the network being extended by the Express on the First floor, but fails to extend it.
The green light is on and everything, settings are correct (identical to 1F).
Though when I am on the second floor and start to venture away from the limits of 1F, the 2F doesn't seem to boost the signal or extend the network, after walking 5 meters away I lose connection to the network.
    Can anyone help?

As I have 3 Airport Express' all up, would I theoretically set it up so that 2F would "Join a wireless network" > allow ethernet clients then plug the third Express (3F) to 2F. Then setting 3F up to create a wireless network? clients would have to reconnect between the two, but it would be a temporary fix until I can have a network cable installed to connect the Extreme with 2F.
You could leave AirPort Express 2F in the "extend a wireless network" configuration because the ethernet port is enabled in this type of setup.
Then connect an ethernet cable to 3F from 2F and configure 3F as a "bridge" (Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)) to "create a wireless network" using the exact same wireless network name, security and password as the main router. Then, computers would not have to reconnect as they move around the house.
If you configured the network this way, you would not need to connect AirPort Express 3F all the way back to the AirPort Extreme. But, you would have better bandwidth if you did connect it directly to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Airport Express, hidden network, no automatic connection

    Howdy,
I now have received my 24" for 3 hours
    Happy camper here
I have one issue which I can't figure out.
Its about connecting automatically to my Wifi Network.
I have two wifi networks, one Airport Express and one 'other brand'.
Both with hidden SSID and WPA paswords.
Now when I connect manually to these networks, all goes OK.
Then I have created a profile under system preferences /network:
    Under the Airport tab:
    By default, join: 'Preferred Networks'
After which I have added the two networks with network name and password.
    under network ports tab:
I have switched of ethernet and moved airport all the way up.
    What I can't figure out:
When I re-boot, it does not automatically connect to any of these networks. I have to do it manually always.
I have tried using the set-up assitant, but it gives me a bad-password error (while I am 200% sure its correct) probably cause I can not select the authentication method.
    Any ideas ?
    B

I gave up and haven't bothered.
MAC addressing and Password should be enough.

  • Airport Express requests a password ?

When using Airport Express to configure my Airport, it requires a password. I have no idea where to find this password. This is not a wifi password, since I am connected to the Airport by ethernet connection.
When entering any password, I get the message error -6753.
    Can you help me ?
    Thanks

    Hi Olivierc!
Perhaps you originally configured the Express with the password "apple" ??
Regardless, perhaps the easiest is to reset the Express to factory default, which erases the "profiles" - all memory of contact with other computers. That'll give you a completely fresh start, just as if it were new. While "reset to factory default" may sound dramatic, it's actually quite simple, since it won't change the firmware of the Express, or the AirPort software on your Mac. You'll be back to normal in a few minutes:)
Refer to the last section "How to perform a factory default reset" on this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
You'll know that a factory default has successfully occurred when the default name of the Express (Apple Network ____ ) is displayed in your menu bar's AirPort icon.

  • Apple TV breaks my Airport Express wifi network

    Hi,
I have an Apple TV, Airport Express (mode = "Participate in a WDS network") and Airport Exreme (mode = "create network") and iMac all connected to router/hub via Enternet. Whenever I used my Apple TV, my iPhone and iPad can no longer connect to the wifi network (they keep asking for the password, but 'are unable to connect' even when the password is re-entered). Powering the Airport Express off and on fixes the problem (until next time the Apple TV is used).  Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks
    Luke

Participate in a WDS network would not be the correct setting for the AirPort Express because this type of setting is only used when the AirPort Express is connecting using wireless. You are connecting using Ethernet.
Suggest that you change the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the AirPort Extreme....and be sure to configure it in Bridge Mode as the final step before you Update the settings for the device.
This will provide one large "roaming" network.

  • Extending airport express wireless network with another airport express

I am trying to set up another airport express to my existing airport express at home so I can extend the wireless range and also to connect my printer (to my second airport express) so I can have a shared wireless printer. Is this possible? If so, can someone assist me on how to set this up?
    Thanks.

    Try the following ...
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - WDS Setup
"Factory Reset" the AX base stations
    o (ref: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044)
(Note: To facilitate setting up the base stations, place them in near proximity of each other during the setup phase. Also record the Apple IDs of each base station that will included in the WDS as these will be required during setup.)
    Main Base Station Setup
(Note: The AX connected to the Internet will be assumed to be the main base station in the WDS.)
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or by temporarily connecting directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to make the following settings.
    WDS Tab
    1. Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
    2. Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
    3. Click "+" to add Remote/Relay Base Stations.
3a. Select the Base Station that you want to be the WDS Remote/Relay.
3b. AirPort ID: <verify that this is the correct MAC address for the Base Station you are adding as a Remote/Relay.>
3c. Auto configure as a WDS remote base station (checked)
    3d. Click "OK."
    4. Verify that the Remote/Relay Base Station has been added to the list.
    5. Click "Update," and then verify the settings for the Remote/Relay.
5a. Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
5b. New network name: <verify that this is the same as the network name as the main base station>
    5c. TCP/IP: Configure using DHCP
    5d. Base Station Password: <the Remote/Relay Base Station password>
    5e. Confirm: <same as previous step>
    5f. Click "OK."

  • Connect Asus Netbook (PC) to Mac Airport Express wireless network

I'm very happy with my PowerBook G4 but recently bought a Asus Netbook as a light weight travel option. Had problems connecting the Netbook to my home AirPort Express system - it's set up as a wireless connection to PowerBook G4.
The Netbook asked for the AirPort password, but then wouldn't accept it. The Apple phone support people tried to be helpful but thought that changing my Wireless Network password would help. It didn't.
Eventually I found a good article that explained the Netbook actually wanted the Mac/Airport WEP key, even though it asked for a 'password'. The article also explained where to find the WEP key on the Mac, and that I had to uncheck the box on the Netbook that says something like 'The key is provided via 802.1x authentication'.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post the address to that article, but will attempt to do so here:
    htpp://www.macwindows.com/airportpc.html
    Hope this helps someone else.

Hello MacNet2. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
PCs, like Macs, can access wireless networks that use a number of encryption standards: WEP, WPA, WPA2, 802.1x.
WEP is the oldest standard and is no longer considered secure. Your new Asus should support the newer WPA & WPA2 standards. Both are not only significantly more secure, but are also easy to work with when using mixed OS clients. Both the older 802.11b/g or newer 802.11n version of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) support all of these standards.
Is there some reason that you wireless network is still using WEP?
