Airport express loses signal but software says it's OK, and light is green?!

My AirPort express wireless 7.6.4 has just stopped working although the light is green and the Airport Utility software in the computer (10.9.5) says the connection is "excellent". I have it connected to a BOSE speaker which works (I tested it with an iPhone in the dock to make sure it wasn't the speaker gone). The airport express uses a wireless signal from an airport extreme (7.6.4) which is working because I tested the AP extreme and printed wirelessly from the computer. The airport extreme is connected to a modem via an ethernet cable.  I have done a soft and hard reset on the AirPort express, and I still can't get my audio happening. I accidentally turned off the modem earlier and that is when the problems started. Obviously the signal is there according to the software. I have run out of ideas how to fix this!

I did what this thread recommends last night...worked perfectly!
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6732758&#6732758
I unplugged all modules, left them for 5 mins minimum. Then reconnected modem and then Airport express. Immediately got a gree solid light after reboot and then Airport Utility used to set up my base. Internet is super fast again.

  • Hi for some reason my Airport Express has stopped working. It just glows Amber and occasionally flashes green but goes back to amber. AU can't see it. I have a macbook and want to connect via my existing wifi to stream music, can someone help please!

Hi, title says it all. I have been doing this for years and don't know what has changed.....
Reset doesn't seem to work, this includes factory! Please help.

It certainly would not hurt to let the folks at the Apple store take a look to verify things. If the product is less than a year old, or you have AppleCare on one of your Mac, the Express may qualify for free replacement.
The Apple Store may also some some refurbished Express devices on hand at a discount if you need to buy, or they can direct you to the Apple online store for the same thing.

i am extending my airport extreme by adding an airport express.
Does this mean that you are connecting the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using a wired Ethernet connection....or....are you connecting the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme wirelessly?
but now I cannot get on either because it is a self assigned IP?
I suggest that you first concentrate on getting the AirPort Extreme working correctly. Power off the modem and both the Extreme and Express, wait a few minutes, then power up the modem and let it run a few minutes. Then, power up the AirPort Extreme and check the network for proper operation. Leave the AirPort Express off for now. Report on your results.
We need to know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC in order to provide more troubleshooting help.
If you have a Mac and do not know what operating system you are using, click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click About This Mac. Post back with the OS X version number that you see there.

  • AirPort Express is dead, but under warranty

My airPort Express Base Station does not work. It does not appear anymore, and is apparantly not sending a signal. I have rest it, and tried to troubleshoot it in every way I can think of. I own others that work fine. It is still under warranty with apple, as the receipt says "warranty effective through Jul. 18, 2008." How do I go about the process of having them replace it or fix it?

Gail - the symptoms you describe are far less common, but I think you too have a dead Airport Express. Yes, a software update (or more specifically, a firmware update) gone wrong can easily turn a functional Airport Express into a doorstop.
Try doing a factory reset per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the symptoms persist - get a warranty replacement. Absolutely your Airport Express will be covered for this sort of problem if it is under warranty.

  • Airport Express loses connection to base station

Airport Express second gen loses connection to base station, has to be reset.

Roger that.  Late 2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4mb ram, 10.9.1 Mavericks, formatted and hand loaded after questionable upgrade load.  Fast, flawless, no issues.
Airport Express configured to wirelessly extend existing network for the express purpose of supplying an analog
input to a stereo amplifier via airplay.  No other devices are connected to the AE.
The WAP is a Century Link Actiontec C1000A VDSL2 physically located 6 feet from the AE with no obstructions.
There are no existing proximal fortuitous distortion or RF interference sources.  Other 802.X networks near are
on non-conflicting channels.  The WAP is less than six months old and has no issues.
The WAP is configured  for MAC filtering with the SSID turned off.  In the allow list are two iphones, a printer, two more MBPs and the Airport Express.  One of the iphones is loaded with the Remote Ap which functions
flawlessly when the AE is connected.
The AE connects properly in the Extend Existing Network mode and performs as advertised as long as Air Play
    and/or itunes is active.
Some time after music has ended, the MBP has gone to sleep, or been shut down ... the Airport  Express loses its connection to the wireless network, with its amber light flashing.
Performing a reset and reconnecting is necesssary, and all works as advertised after.  Subsequently,
sleep, inactivity, or shutdown will cause loss of connection again.
I am aware the AE can be connected with CAT6, but that is unnaceptable.  If I had wanted to use wire I
would have plugged the MBP into the amplifier and saved $100.
My speculation is some sort of TCPIP flub in the design ... as in the AE does not natively transmit keep-alive
packets when it stops getting data from the Air Play computer.  It would be easy to decide whether to fix
the problem or return an inadequately designed product ... if there were any information about it.  No schematics, no operation description however leaves me only to say thank you for your time and hope
    you have the solution.

  • Airport express: wireless works, but internet does not

    Hello.
It happened yesterday for no apparent reason: Internet was not working via airport anymore, as it should have normally.
Config: Cable modem to Airport extreme (.g); USB printer attached to base station, base station Ethernet port going to router with Boradband phone and 1 PC attached to it.
4 MAc computers attached to Network (and getting Internet) via Airport.
Internet connection using DHCP, dynamic IP address provided by RoadRunner (Time Warner).
I tested Cable Modem (works), all ethernet cables (good), reset base station and recreated an airport network.
Airpot network works, USB printer is accessible via Airport, but Internet is still off (although Network Configuration in Sys Pref give me a green light and informs me that I am connected to the internet)
My question: is it possible that Base Station fails only for its Internet/WAN capability, and not for Network functions?
thanks. This one is a puzzler.

    Hello.
We have been having the same problem discussed in this thread earlier, described as follows:
It happened two days ago for no apparent reason:
Internet was not working via Airport Express anymore, as it
    should have normally.
Config: Cable modem to Airport Express via a US Robotics router,
2 MAC computers (iMac700 and MacMini) attached to Network (and getting
Internet), the iMac through router and the MacMini via Airport Express.
Internet connection using DHCP, dynamic IP address
    provided by RoadRunner (Time Warner).
iMac connected to router is getting Internet just fine; MacMini connected to network via AEX is getting network signal but no Internet. Network diagnostics says it can't tell what's wrong and call ISP. ISP says it's an Apple problem.
I tested Cable Modem (works), all ethernet cables
(good), Airport Express network works, but Internet is still off for MacMini.
I've done a power recycling exercise twice, but still no Internet on the MacMini.
Does anyone have any ideas? Both my son and I are stumped. He's a teenager and is fairly computer savvy. Neither of us has been able to figure this out.

  • I think my airport express is dead but I dont know...help!

    hi there
on thursday night, i did a number of software updates (unrelated to airport express). anyway, on friday the airport express went down, so i thought that was simply some kind of software update, reset the computer but nothing worked.
so i have tried resetting the unit, unplugging it for a lengthy period of time and nothing gets my little light flashing again.
the reason i am unsure, is that when i do go to plug the unit back into a powerpoint, i see a very quick green flash which suggests the unit is ok, and i am wondering whether i am doing something wrong.
FYI, i am still relatively new to apples, having a powerbook for approx. 16 months although i still dont understand apples the way i did my old pc's.
is it simply the unit, in which case i'll go to my nearest apple store or is it me?
    please help.

  • Airport Express Appears Connected, But No Music

I have the oldest version of Airport Express, and a 2009 vintage Macbook Pro with Yosemite recently installed, iTunes 12.0.0.140. Yosemite does not support the Airport Utility needed for the AE I have, but I was able to configure using Airport Utility 5.6.1 launcher from Corey Mahler.  So, the light is green on the AE, and iTunes shows clean connection to the AE, but there is no sound.  I have checked the connection from the AE to the receiver, and from receiver to speakers.
Prior to upgrading to Yosemite I was on Snow Leopard, the AE worked OK, except it tended to drop out and then only work intermittently the longer it was in use in any given session. But at least then I knew I had a connection.  Now with Yosemite and latest iTunes I'm wondering whether something else is preventing the music from playing.  Would think that iTunes would flag this if that were the case.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You are correct on all counts.
I have a fairly new Linksys 6200 main router which does provide dual band Wi-Fi.
Since last writing, I did follow your recommendation to purchase and download Wi-Fi Explorer.  It gave me an excellent graphical view of the strengths of the various Wi-Fi networks, and I did confirm that my network was putting out the dual bands, that my extender was also putting out, etc.  I could also walk around the house and see how the signals rose and fell, depending on location.
Signal seems to be strong enough in all areas that the airport express should work, however it only seems to work, and then just intermittently, when I have it close to the main router, where the signal strength according to Wi-Fi Explorer reads 84%. If I move my laptop to the AE's original location, the signal is about 68%, and is coming via the extender. Most of the neighbors' signals were below 50%, but there are a lot of them.  Too bad the AE does not supper 5GHz bands because they seem wide open except for my router.
Not sure how the signal strength % relates to signal to noise ratio.
What I could also see is that the 2.4GHz band where most of the neighborhood networks were broadcasting. I tried to assign my main router to specific bands (only choice is within the 2.4GHz for the AE), instead of automatic, and sometimes it helped when the AE was close to the router, but it would still cut out.
So, when the AE is close to the router, I get some intermittent sound, but further away, nothing at all. So it appears that there is something either wrong with the AE or its just not getting the quality of signal it needs from the newer routers.
Our iPads, iphones, Apple TV seem to work fine - though the Apple TV occasionally pauses to re-load.
The variables over the last few months have been:
    1. The newer Linksys main router, which replaced another older Linksys (both cases used default settings except for network access password).
    2. A Linksys extender added recently so that my son could use his "smart" TV.
    3. My upgrading from Snow Leopard to Yosemite two weeks ago (on 10.10.1 now).
Prior to these, the AE would sometimes go for hours without a problem, but then stop playing for seconds or minutes (green light on regardless). It was when I installed Yosemite that I lost even intermittent sound coming from the AE, in its original location.
I am tempted to try a newer AE to see whether access to the 5GHz band would solve the problem.
    Thanks again.

When in sleep mode iPhone 4 loses signal but when it's back on it searches and finds signal. iOS was 5.0.1, update to 5.1 but no changes.
Battery problem, anntena or motherboard? pleas help.

it could be a motherboard problem. Last month I spilled liquid on to my iphone and since I didn't have warranty for it I had to take it to a "phone doctor". He fixed it but mentioned that motherboard is working fine but he can not say for sure for how long it will last, and that I may experience some wierd problems. I'm having this exact problem the day I got my iphone back.
Well no longer but the solution still seems wierd. I turned on the "location services" because I saw in the "system services" screen that "cell network search" was turned on. I figured if I don't screw with location services, it would be okay. So, after three hours, I terminated the sleep in 10-20-30 minutes and 1 hour intervals, it seems I no longer have the problem but I'm going to sleep over it to be sure. Also make sure to turn on the "auto" option on the "carrier" menu.
I will post the outcome if I don't forget about this page.

  • When in sleep mode iPhone 4 loses signal but when it's back on it searches and finds signal only recently doing this and because it's searching for signal battery not lasting very long please help

When in sleep mode iPhone 4 loses signal but as soon as its on again it searches and finds signal easily but because of this not getting calls or text msges and because it's searching for signal all the time battery not lasting

Here are some observations and a suggestion.
    1)  I mentioned before, that the number of views of this discussion forum is fast approaching 100,000.  I suppose relative to all iPhones sold that is not a great percentage, but 100,000 still sounds pretty impressive to me.  Consider also that many people probably have this same Sim problem and are not viewing this discussion forum because thay do not know it exists.  How many people are REALLY experiencing this problem?  Who knows.  But I suspect it is more that 100,000.
    2)  To the best of my knowledge, Apple does not consult these forums as a guide to awareness of product performance.  It may be company policy, but most of the time when I speak to an Apple employee they seem remarkably unaware of the "Top Stories" in the Apple Discussion Forum.  This, despite the fact that my personal experience with customer service at Apple is excellent.  So, as much as we of this discussion forum are confident SOMEONE important at Apple is reading all our posts and taking them to heart...I am not so sure.
    3)  I have been told over and over that the best way to gain Apple's attention regarding a problem is to post a comment on their Feedback Site.  One comment about a problem is pretty worthless.  100,000 comments on the same issue, I'm guessing, will really get their attention.
    4)  Some folks have mentioned a recall to address this problem.  Although such a thing is always a possibility, I don't see it happening.  Why?  When the brakes on a Toyota don't work, or that Toyata starts to accelerate without driver intention...well, that involves human life and the stakes are quite high.  For many reasons you would see the automotive industry eventually be forced into a recall program under such a situation.  But, a phone APPEARS to not nearly be such a life and death device.  Or is it?  My daughter's iPhone 4S developed a "SIM FAILURE" on the same day her car broke down in the middle of the very rural area we live at around 10:00 pm.  She is 17 years old and was coming home from high school play practice.  You can imagine the anxiety I and her mother felt when she did not arrive home on time.  She eventually walked about a quarter mile to a house of a stranger and had to ask to use their phone to call us.  Now, I am not saying that strangers where I live are not to be trusted.  But, in addition to being worried out of my mind, I was not happy that an inoperative iPhone 4S caused my daughter to be put in this situation.  My biggest concern now is...when will my daughter's iPhone become inoperative again due to SIM FAILURE?
    5)  The more folks in this discussion forum who post a comment about this issue in Apple's feedback site the more pressing this issue is going to be perceived by Apple.  So, I like others, encourage all of you to do so.  If this seems like a lot of effort, I offer you these few sentences below that you could just copy and paste into the feedback site.
The link to feedback site is:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Feel free to use copy/amend/whatever the following as you wish:
    Dear Apple,
I wish to register a strong concern about my iPhone's unpredictable inoperability due to failures somehow associated with it's SIM technology.  For me, I do not consider this just a significant lack of convenience, but a significant safety issue.  Should I need my phone in an emergency situation where it is experiencing  a SIM FAILURE, I believe the iPhone will have put me at risk.  I would ask you to please give fixing this problem your greatest priority and effort.
    Sincerely, XXXX

  • Added AirPort express to extreme but my iPad does not see the express

I wanted to extend my network due to "dead spots" in the house and patio but no change after adding the AirPort express to my extreme. It set up fine and both with a green light but the bars on the iPad have not changed. It still has a slow connection despite being in the same room as the express. I set it up as a N-device (the express) per the instructions to extend a network. Our home phone is 5.8GHz & should not interfere. Apple Tv & iPhone 4 work but did before. What have I missed??

It sounds like the Express is not "extending" Quick check points:
    On the AirPort Extreme
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save any changes
    On the AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Extreme network
Make sure there is a check next to "Allow wireless clients"
Security = Same setting as Extreme
    Password = Same as Extreme
    Update to save any changes
If you have a laptop handy, turn off the wireless on the laptop and temporarily connect it to the ethernet port on the Express with an ethernet cable. Open your browser. If your Express is "extending", you will have internet access.

  • Can airport express boost signal without connecting to 3wire bigpond router?

Can airport express boost signal without connecting to 3wire bigpond router? just via wi-fi?

The Express would not sit with the bigpond router......it would need to be located in the area where you need more wireless signal coverage.
Assuming that you have an open available Ethernet port on the bigpond router, you can use that to connect the Ethernet cable to the Express and locate the Express where it is needed in a remote location.

I want to install apps in my iphone, but it says that the terms and conditions have changed, what I have to do?

Folks, Kit73 on another thread said to do the following:
"While not a very direct solution, I was able to finally accept the terms in a way that seem to register with apple by making a purchase through iTunes on my computer. This forced me through updating my payment information and updating my iTunes software to the latest edition (which I had not yet taken the time to do).  After doing both of these, iTunes took me through the terms & conditions on two separate pages, but ultimately allowed me to purchase my song.  Once I completed these steps, it fixed the problem on my phone, so now I can update my apps and download new ones without running into that loop."
I just did this and have since been able to update apps etc on my iPhone and iPad.

  • Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port?

Can I use my Airport Express as an end point on a wireless network and connect a computer via the ethernet port? - I'm wanting to connect a computer that does not have wireless and is in another building.

The requirements for this to work are:
    1) The AirPort Express must be the 802.11"n" version. Model Number is A1264
    2) There must be adequate wireless signal stength where the Express will be located
    3) The Express must be configured to "join" the wireless network with the option checked to activate the Ethernet port
