AirPort Express won't show up in AirPort Utility... Help?

Both of my AirPort Express base stations have stopped showing up in AirPort Utility. AirPort Utility *does* see the AirPort Extreme base station, but that's it. I have tried both a soft and hard reset on our AirPort Express to no avail... I can see one of the AirPort Express base stations on my iPhone, but can't seem to access it through the AirPort Utility. Help?
I have also tried File > Configure Other & entered the IP address that showed up on my iPhone, as well as a default password 'public' but received a connection error & could go no further. Any ideas you may have as to what I can do to fix this would be awesome.
Thanks in advance,
Erika

do a hard reset on the airport express itself. hold pin button down for about 10 seconds until it flashes really fast yellow. worked for me

  • Brand new airport express won't show up on AirPort Utility

    Hello!
I'm connecting a new 802.11n Airport Express to my existing network. My Airport Extreme (which is only a few months old) and an older AE are working properly and show up just fine. I took the new one out of the box, plugged it into a wall plug near me and it just blinks amber or has a solid amber light. I've tried resetting it (which seems silly, since I only just bought it an hour ago).
Any suggestions? I'm going to use the new AEx to extend the network in the house.
    Thanks
    ~Robin
    Version of Airport Utility: 5.5.1
    Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal

OK, figured it out myself. I plugged a CAT5 cable into the new AEx and it showed up just fine. Got it configured, unplugged the CAT5 cable and it all seems fine now.

  • My airport express no longer shows up in Airport Utility since I got a new router.

Hi all, I'm scratching my head at this one.
For years I've had an Airport Express and it has worked fine. I was using it simply to stream music from iTunes on my PC as well as my iPhone and iPad to my home theater which is in a different room. I had a Linksys WRT150N wireless router, and the Airport Express would join my existing network and stream music via Airplay.
A few days ago I replaced my Linksys router with a Netgear WNDR3800, and the Airport Express no longer connected. I assumed I had to set it up again, but it is not even recognized by Airport Utility, so I can't get to the setup screen. I tried performing a soft reset, hard reset, and attaching the Airport Express to one of my Netgear's LAN ports via Ethernet cable, but it still won't show up in Airport Utility. The amber light just flashes on the unit and I can't access any setup screens.
Am I missing something obvious? All of the help tips assume the Airport Express at least shows up in Airport Utility. In my Airport Utility there is nothing to select and it says "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then click rescan to try again."
I am running a PC with Windows 7 and using Airport Utility v. 5.6.1 for Windows.
    Thanks for any help!

Did you try temporarily connecting an Ethernet cable from your PC to the AirPort Express to see if AirPort Utillty could "see" the AirPort Express that way? This method will work virtually all of the time unless the Windows Firewall or the PC's anti-virus program is blocking the connection attempt from your PC to the AirPort Express.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless only, you need to remember that when you reset the Expess back to default settings, it is now producing a wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx.
You must log on to the Apple Network xxxxxx wireless network first....no password is required.....and then open AirPort Utility so that your PC will establish a connection to the AirPort Express.
Once the AirPort Express has been configured to join your Netgear wireless network, you can log back on to your normal wireless network and all devices will be working with one another.

  • Airport Express won't connect to my network.  help??

*hi, i recently bought an Airport Express, and i finally took it out of its box after i purchased my new stereo. I connected the audio cable to the stereo and the airport unit and plugged it into an outlet. I opened up airport utility on my mac, AX appeared and i configured it to "join a wireless network". After completing the remaining steps, i updated it.. and waited for it to restart. Now here's my problem. It comes up with an error telling me it couldn't find the device after restarting. I have Verizon FiOS as my provider.. and I know that airport express has a history of trouble with the Actiontec router. Is there anything i can do with my current equipment to get this thing to work? I do not need to extend the network.. only join to use airtunes and print wirelessly... Also, my Actiontec router and FiOS connection are through my crappy dell pc downstairs, while i am using my 24" iMac upstairs in my bedroom trying to connect this. Should i change my router's settings? Thanks in advance*

The easiest thing to do is start with a "hard reset" (see below). AirPort Utility will lead you through its configuration, after which you should be rewarded with a green light. It will then appear as an AirPlay device in apps that support it, such as iTunes.
If that isn't happening for you, contact AppleCare using the Contact Us link below. Since it's new, you are entitled to free telephone support for the first 90 days of ownership. They'll talk you through its configuration and resolve any problems that may arise.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then gently press and hold its tiny reset button. Don't apply any more force than required to feel a tactile click.  Keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Airport Express won't configure to by Airport extreme

I keep getting a error stating "the airport express is configured but we can't find it..."  Anyone else solved this problem?

I did that and still got the error message. I got a link from someone on another board:
    http://www.upgradeyourmac.co.uk/mainsite/MacOSQuestions/Q071.html
...that tells you to do the whole setup manually, and I managed to get it working. It seems there is an issue with the software (from a recent software update, I believe) that doesn't allow the 'assist me' set up to work. I just don't get this...Apple has, on numerous occasions, released Airport updates that have broken the darn thing. Do they not test these updates beforehand? For the record, I am not the only person to have experienced this issue.
Is there a quick and easy way to notify Apple about this?

  • AirPort Express doesn't show in AirPort Utility any more/won't connect to network

I have an older airport express that I use wirelessly with an AirPort Extreme to extend my network and stream music via AirPlay.  Within the last couple of days it has been unable to join the network.  It has always worked just fine until now.
The Airport Express powers up, flashes green once, then goes to amber flashing and stays that way forever.  The Airport Express does not show up in AirPort Utility at all.
I have tried soft, hard, and factory resets to no avail.
    The Airport Express info:
    Model A1084
Can't check firmware version beasue it doesn't show up in Airport Utility
The Airport Extreme Info (which is working perfectly fine):
    Model A1143
    Version 7.6.4
    Any further suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dawn

Mavericks (Apple) will not let you run an older version of AirPort Utility on Mavericks.
So I've just discovered.  Unfortunately I don't think booting from my older OS is going to work either, as it appears that 6.3.2 is also what I have installed there.
Doesn't make sense to me still, though, as I upgraded to Mavericks on day 1, but the Airport Expressed worked fine until yeterday.
I have a roomie with a PC.  Will see if we can configure it on his computer.

  • Airport Express won't connect to Extreme by ethernet

    Hi,
    Here is my setup:
    a) Airport Extreme (802.11n 2nd gen) connected by ethernet to cable modem
    b) Airport Express #1 setup to wirelessly extend network
This has worked fine for quite some time.
Now, what I tried to is add a 2nd Airport Express via ethernet, so
    the new setup is:
    1) cable modem via ethernet to Airport Extreme
    2) ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to D-Link 8 port gigabit switch
    3) ethernet from switch to several devices (Tivo, GoogleTV,etc) and also to an in-wall ethernet connection to another part of my house
    4) ethernet from that in-wall ethernet to another D-Link switch
    5) ethernet from that other switch to printer (currently works fine) and to Airport Express #2
    6) Airport Express #1 still connected wirelessly
Problem: Airport Express #2 will not connect.  Won't show up in Airport Utility.  Nothing.
I have tried several factory resets.
After many tries, I finally tried connecting it wirelessly.  This worked, and I was able to see AEX#2 in the Airport Utility.  But, when I then tried to connect it by ethernet, it shut down my entire network.  I can not anywhere find step by step instructions on how to connect the AEX by ethernet to the Extreme.
I have reviewed http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145 but find no help there.
Looking forward to some great help.
    - Blue

If I switch Express#2 (the one I would lilke to connect by ethernet) to "create" a network, with the same SSID and PW, then I can only see Express#2 in the utility and the Extreme and Express#1 dissappear.
As soon as you set the Express #2 to "Create a wireless network, the setting for Connection Sharing will change from Bridge Mode to Share a public IP address. That is likely what is throwing you off.
Setup Express #2 to "Create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, same wireless security and same password.
The next...and last....and critical....step before you click Update must be to change the setting for Connection Sharing from Share a public IP address to Off (Bridge Mode).
Now click Update and wait for a green light on Express #2.
Then, you have to power cycle the entire network.
Power off everything in any order you want.
    Wait a minute
Start the modem first and let it run a minute
Start the AirPort Extreme next the same way
    Then the switch, etc.
You get the idea....keep starting devices one at a time until the entire network is back up.
Now all the AirPorts will be on the same subnet and visible in AirPort Utility.

  • Older model Airport Express won't work with Mountain Lion Airport Utility

just upgraded to Mountain Lion and noticed that of my network of three airport expresses connected to various stereo speaker systems throughout the house, one of the older models won't work with the supplied version of Airport Utility (v 6.1). Here is the message it gives in the utility when I attempt to select this particular Airport Express:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
Well, I go to download v 5.6 and none of the versions available will install on Mountain Lion! (even the version for Lion) Catch 22.
Any resolution to this (other than having to go out and buy a newer version Airport Express)?

  • AirPort Express won't work with 7.0.2

Everything was fine til I bought a new Shuffle. It made me upgrade to 7.0.2, now my Airport Express won't work. I have firmware 6.2 and just uploaded all of the newest updates from apple.com for it (AX). The security is off on my network and the AX is connected with a green light. Still no option to choose my home stereo which is hooked up to the AX. HELP! I have spent all day trying to get this to work!!!!

My Airport Express when it is setup to extend my network while plugged into Ethernet will Create a network under settings
This is the correct setting to "extend" the network using an Ethernet connection. Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.
If I change this to Extend A Network it doesn't work properly.
This is because "Extend a wireless network" is used only when AirPort devices communicate with each other using wireless only......not Ethernet.
It would help if Apple used settings like "Extend a network using Ethernet" and "Extend a network using wireless only".....but they don't.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be configured as the main router if you want it to provide a Guest Network. It cannot do this if it is configured in Bridge Mode.

  • Older Airport express won't see the signal from the cable modem.

Older Airport express won't see the signal from the cable modem.
My macbook sees the AP express and I can stream music to it but no internet. If I plug the ethernet cable directly into the macbook I can see the internet

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • I'm trying to add my airport express to my network. The airport utility shows a message that its gathering info about my network then suddenly an unexpected error message appears. Why is that?

i'm trying to add my airport express to my network. The airport utility shows a message that its gathering info about my network then suddenly an unexpected error message appears. Why is that?

Until Bob Timmons gets back to you, first decide what you would like the Express to do. I understand you want it for AirPlay remote speakers, which you can certainly do.
I am assuming that you are not using an Apple AirPort router; if that's not the case stop here and let me know.
If your existing router is not an Apple AirPort Base Station, the Express:
can "join" an existing wireless network as a client, for the sole purpose of streaming music. If that's what you want to do, do not connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable.
can "extend" an existing wired network to serve as an additional wireless access point, which can also stream music. If that's what you want to do, connect its WAN port to an available LAN port on your router using an Ethernet cable.
Then, "hard reset" the Express according to the instructions below, and configure it. The prompts should be self-explanatory. If you run into trouble, describe which of the above two configurations you decided upon, and the point at which you're getting the "unexpected problem".

  • My Airport Express won't extend range. How to set up?

My Airport Express won't extend the range of my Airport Extreme. How should I set it up to get it to work?  Stuart

When the Express is configured to "extend" it is a wireless repeater.
"Adding Wi-Fi base stations when it is unnecessary
    Speaks for itself
can reduce Wi-Fi throughput because the Wi-Fi network will require more data management overhead."
As will adding another computer, iPhone or any wireless device to the network, for that matter.
FWIW, I have run 4 AirPort Expresses all setup to "extend" and noticed nothing except faster Internet browsing and download speeds throughout the house.
IF...you can connect the AirPort Express to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet connection, that will provide better overall performance. That is the way any commercial network is designed, except on a much larger scale.

  • Airport Express won't connect to internet...all is green

My Airport express won't connect to established Network in my office.  I am connecting to a 10/100 base T in the building (as the modem, I assume) and want to broadcast the network for wifi.  Express sets up ok, but than cannot find the internet....any suggestions?  The port is live as I can directly connect it to my Mac Book and find the internet without issues.

It is possible to have a green light on the Express if some network errors are overlooked, so it may be necessary to reset the Express back to factory default settings and start over again.
Keep in mind that some networks will not allow a router to be added to the network, so a computer might work, but a router may not.
What model number of AirPort Express do you have?
What operating system are you using on the MacBook?
Do yo know if the Express has been configured to operate in Bridge Mode?
