Airport Extreme-Airport Utility SAYS I'm connected to internet but I'm not

Have several apple computers connected via ethernet to ATT DSL; was using a Netgear router...but it was SLOW SLOW SLOW to open new internet pages: trouble shooting with AT&T proved that when I hooked my computer direct to modem, internet speed was FAST; so problem was Netgear router.
So I hopped to Apple store and bought Airport Extreme. Completed setup per instructions...Network preferences says I am connected to the internet, the Airport Utility says I am hooked up to the internet; proper lights are ON for both the modem and Airport Extreme unit, yet when I click on Safari it says I am NOT connected to the internet....ummmmm...I have no idea what to try next...any ideas, please????

I realize that I made a slight error in my initial description; all the computers are attached to a switch, which is in turn attached to the Airport Extreme which is in turn attached to the modem.
Thanks for your speedy reply!!! My husband says we are not using a PPPoE connection, but rather a DHPC connection, so the PPPoE senario doesn't apply.
Any other ideas????
Thanks, Barb

  • Says I'm Connected to Internet, but I'm not..

I've just connected to Optusnet (ISP) yesterday and when connected to built in ethernet everything works fine.
When I connect it to the Airport Express, I get a green light, 4 bars, it even says I'm connected to the internet, but when I open safari or try to download anything it says I'm not connected to server. I've reset the airport, I've done all sorts but it hasn't worked.
I'm sure this means it has something to with the DSL modem (Siemens 4200), but if anyone can help I would be trully grateful.

Does your DSL ISP require PPPoE for connectivity? If it does have you set up your AX properly for a PPPoE connection?
    For example...
AirPort Express Base Station Setup (AX) w/DSL Modem
Using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - AirPort Network Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Create a closed network (unchecked)
    - Wireless Security: Not enabled
    - Channel: Automatic
    - Mode: 802.11b/g Compatible
    Internet tab
    - Connect Using: PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE)
    - Account Name: <ISP account name>
    - Change password: <ISP password>
    - Always stay connected (checked)
    - WAN Ethernet Port: Automatic
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (checked)
    - Share a single IP address (using DHCP & NAT) (enabled)

I do not seem to have the same problem at other locations when connected? WOuld love a little help. My husband has an iPhone 5 and he doesn't have the same issue.

my computer says it is connected to the internet, full bars but it does not load the webpage when i click on safari

If you are connected wirelessly it is possible to have full bars, but your wireless router connection to the Internet could be the problem.  Try restart your router.

  • I cannot update ios as it says itunes cannot connect to internet, but it is

Hi everybody, please help me. I've been trying to update my ipad for ages. When i click update it says itunes cannot connect to internet, but it is and it works for iphone and ipod, it's just the ipad. tried with security settings as well, but it doesn't work. did the connectivity test and it says itunes cannot connect to internet...it is connected

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • Says can't connect to internet but actually is connected

I kept getting an error message "Cannot connect to internet" So after going round and round for almost an hour - reseting, reconfiguring network, trying ethernet cable instead of wifi etc. I chose "continue without internet" and bingo it's working now. so I must have a magic ATV that works without internet
And by the way during all these shenanigans two other computers on the same network were connecting to the router and internet fine.

Hi vazandrew, thanks for trying to help but actually  the ATV is connected to the internet as I am able to continue watching the show I was watching when it fell. And just to confirm that it is not streaming from any local device, I went and selected a brand new show that I have never watched and it streamed fine.
So there is something strange going on with my ATV.
I am listing below the exact sequence of events for you to analyse:
Watching a show and in the middle of it, it dropped out and some kind of error message came up saying something like "Sorry your show can not continue due to no internet connection" (don't remember what exactly).
Went over to my macbook and it was still connected fine - opened several new browser pages, refreshed them, etc.- all fine
Went back to ATV and went to settings > menu > general > network etc. and re-configured but kept getting message something like "you are connected to wi-fi/router GVT-blah blah" (ours) but you have no internet connection.
Went back and reconfigured network several times,  logged in/out of user account several times but still no joy.
Went to settings > menu > general > reset all, reconfigured everything to factory default, logged back in, then got the dreaded endless spinning wheel with an eventual message saying something like "could not set date and time"
Went and changed to configure date /time manually but couldn't find the field to do so so went back and changed back to auto.
Also changed region from US to Brazil
Spent about an hour doing all of the above several times and also checked my macbook several times to confirm internet connection was all good, including a speed test.
Tried ethernet cable connected directly from router to ATV, it showed as connected to router on ATV but still kept giving me message of no internet.
Disconnected ethernet cable and switched back to w-fi and reset and reconfigured all again but same message saying something like "connected to router, but no internet - continue without internet?
Finally in desperation, I chose "Continue without internet"
The screen then went to the Netflix one month free sub option that we subscribed to when we first got the ATV, which I chose and went through the iTunestore account log-in.
Bingo..all working again supposedly with no internet.
Finally just to confirm 100% that the ATV is not streaming via another local device, I shut them all down and the ATV is still streamed fine.
And as I said above, I am able to continue streaming the interrupted show and also chose other Netflix shows that I have never watched before (for now).
If you ask me, very buggy!

  • I have just bought an airport time capsule and im trying to install an airport utility. I tried the 6 version but it wd not load because it said might mac would not support. I then tried the 5.6.1. and it said it would not work with airport capsule.

I have just bought an airport time capsule and i am trying to install an airport utility programme to support this
However, it seems the version 6 which came out last year - i can't use on my Mac - Snow Leopard -
So tried to then install version 5.6.1 and although this installed properly, it says this will not support my capsule
    2. I have BT home hub 2. I presume I cannot bypass this as the internet router? I bought the time capsule for its capability to back up . The router was a byproduct. But am I correct in thinking that it acts as a secondary router or a booster rather than a primary router . I still need the BT homehub?
if anyone can help that would be great
    CS J

You should either return the Time Capsule or upgrade your Mac at least to OS X 10.7.

  • It says I'm Connected to Router but I'm Not

this afternoon i'm having problems accessing the internet on my MBP 10.5.4. i don't think the problem is with my router because my old PB G4 10.3.9 has been working fine on the network all day (at the same time as the MBP is down).
my internet access keeps dropping. pages not loading, mail not connecting etc. but the airport icon says i'm still connected to my router and everything looks ok in the network prefs. sometimes if i turn airport off and back on it works for a minute before dropping again.
i've tried resetting PRAM, repaired permissions, deleted all airport/internet keychains, removed all locations and airport passwords and started again but it hasn't improved things. when i started up in safe mode for a half hour or so the connection seemed fine and didn't drop, now i'm back with a regular startup i'm having the problem again. everything has worked fine for months before this.
one time the connection dropped while i was doing a traceroute and it said "Host is down" after turning airport off and on again it continued ok.
in case it matters, i have a sky broadband connection and a sky / sagem F@ST2504 router.
    what can i do ?
    thanks !

And you cannot connect computer to computer AND run wireless internet access at the same time, although you may run the internet THROUGH another computer. (computer 1 connected wirelessly and receiving internet / computer 2 connects to computer 1 and picks up internet through it).
This has never been a problem, unless i'm misunderstanding you - i have been able to connect to my old PB over the network wirelessly (through "shared" in a finder window) and have both computers independently using the internet through the wireless router.
As your connection drops at the same time as the internet, could it even be that the airport card (inside) is faulty?
it wouldn't surprise me as the disk drive has been faulty on this MBP since i bought it, but i think today's network problem is more likely some kind of conflict or preference problem as it is working fine continuously following a safe boot & only occurring during a normal boot.
i've tried various channels on the router and at the moment have ended up back at "auto".
thanks for all your ideas alexandre. hopefully someone else will chip in if i've exhausted you !

  • Photosmart C7180 says it is connected to network, but installer does not find

    BACKGROUND:
    Primary Computer
I have a mac-mini running both the latest Snow leopard build, as well as Win 7 Pro ver 6.1 build 7600 (64-bit).  When I first got the computer, OSX ran through its initial setup. I  then downloaded and installed  the HP software for the printer for the mac and everything including wireless network scanning worked beautifully.
I then installed Win 7 using a bootcamp partition and went through the same thing, including installing the 64-bit version of the HP software. All worked great as with the OSX partition - for 2-3 weeks.
    Network:
Belkin F5D7231-4 v4000 router running WPA2 with AES encryption.  I also use MAC address filtering.
    PROBLEM:
As mentioned before, all worked great for 2-3 weeks until...
To try and install a blu-ray, I was going to use a spare router as a wireless access point/bridge.  I installed new firmware for my Belkin router as advised by belkin tech support. As a result my router lost all original settings.  I entered in all MAC addresses for equipment I use and enabled them to have access to the network.
After several unsuccessful attempts to print again.  I checked my printer status screen and it indicated that it was successfully connected to my wireless network.  Tried restoring the printer to original network settings and reestablishing the network connection.  The printer display says it successfully connected after I entered my network password/passkey into the printer, but still no printer shows up on the computer when I tried to install.  I removed all drivers and software, using the uninstall utility as well as the driver removal tool on the HP website.  I tried reinstalling the printer, but it never showed up as connected by the software for wireless installation.  I uninstalled everything again and , based on suggestions, tried installing the printer over a USB connection first, then installing wirelessly.  Still no success.
I have checked my router settings (including refreshing DHCP settings) to make sure that the printer shows up on my router.  It does indeed show up as connected to the router. However, the HP network diagnostic utility for some reason cannot find my printer.  I checked the wireless network summary on the printer display and it shows the same IP address for the printer as shown in my router setup utility (192.168.2.9).
I would like to get it going in the Win 7 partition first, then I can address the OSX side.
Does anyone have any clues or suggestions?  Thanks in advance!
EDIT:  I should add that I disabled the windows firewall and the antivirus program I run while installing/uninstalling.

Well, I see a few things that can be in the way:
    1. MAC address filtering is really not a security measure since the MAC addresses are sent in the clear (unencrypted) and many devices can have their MAC addresses changed easily with software.  I'd recommend losing the MAC filtering and just use WPA2 and be even more secure than you are currently.
    2. If you disabled the firewalls during the install, that may have been a bad thing.  The installer is supposed to create ports through the firewalls during install, so if they are disabled and later enabled, the ports are not there.
    3. Does your printer show up if you type its IP into a browser?
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Says I'm connected to internet but I'm really not - iPad2

My iPad2 says it's connected to the internet, both in the settup (there is a check) and the range is full in the top left corner of the screen.  However, when I open Safari or any app requiring internet, it says there is no internet connection.

Look at iOS Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398

iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4199
    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Mobile Hotspot Says I'm connected to internet, but websites timing out

Hello, I just got mobile hotspot for my Thunderbolt. I am connecting to the network and it is saying I have internet access, however when I try and load a website they are timing out.
To make matters stranger, my computer is showing recieving and sending packets, and I had a youtube vdeo half loaded, and it streamed the rest. But when I click on new websites it is saying connection timed out.
    All help is appreciated thanks!

This has happened to me in the past. I've seen a few others report similar issues. I'll assume you've already tried the standard solutions (reboot, battery pull, reseat the SIM card).
Have you tried connecting to the hotspot with another computer? Have you tried a direct USB connection rather than a WiFi connection?
For me, the solution was to turn off Auto Sync before using the hotspot feature (Menu -> Settings -> Accounts and Sync, and then uncheck Auto Sync). Don't know why this worked, but it did.
If the above doesn't work for you, it could be a network-related issue. To test this, try the following:
Can you ping sites from your computer when the browsing ability is down?
If no, then it sounds like a DNS issue. In this case, try accessing a website by using its IP address rather than its domain name. For example, 206.112.186.66 is the IP address of lowes.com. If you can access a site via the IP address but not via the domain name, then it's a DNS problem. Call VZW tech support to report it. Use different DNS servers (e.g., Open DNS) in the meantime.
If you can still ping sites, then it's not a DNS issue. So, next, try using a proxy server--such as proxify.com--to access the web.  If the the proxy server works, then you should call VZW support to report the problem, since it's clearly an issue on their end with specific sites.
When calling into support, let me forewarn you: Give yourself an hour or more for them to walk you through the usual steps (reboot, battery pull, reseat the SIM card). Also, if they assign you a trouble ticket, don't expect to be called back within the promised 48 hours (it's more like 2+ weeks). Instead, you have to be assertive and keep calling them back.

  • TS1398 I have had my iPad 2 less than a month. (bought during black friday 2012)..... I updated to IOS 6 probably two weeks ago, the WiFi connection was working just fine until tonight... flat out quit working... says it's connected... but it's not. HELP!

I have an iPad 2 for less than a month, I updated the IOS to 6 about two weeks ago... It was great, up until tonight. My WiFi flat out won't work... and all the other laptops, iphones in the house are working fine.
Would LOVE to have it fixed.
Not very happy with Apple and this 'mishap'...
it does NOT have the cellular wifi, or whatever it's called. it's not capable of connecting to a carrier... just through regular wifi.

    1. Turn off router for 30 seconds and on again.
    2. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • Hardware wirelessly connected to internet, but browser is not

    Hi,
My T61 laptop is only 5months old.  Two months ago it started giving me the following problem:
My computer claims that it is connected to a wireless network with a good signal strength.  However when I open my Firefox browser, it does not connect to the internet.  Sometimes it does connect with no problems, and sometimes it connects with a very slow speed.  Through all of this my computer still claims I am connected to a wireless network with good speed.
Sometimes I have to disconnect and connect a couple of times to my network (and other networks that I need to use) for me to be able to use my browser.  I have no idea why my computer does this.  This also happens with IE.
The extended warranty unfortunately does not cover "software issues" so I have no idea what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have an HP Pavilion  23 All in One.  After a power outage, the browser will no longer open, even though I am connected to
the internet via Wi-Fi.  Except for the internet, all other computer functions are working just fine.
    I am using Windows 8.
Does anyone know how to fix this.  All other computers in the house are working via Wi-Fi without any problems.
    Thx

    Hi,
Open a Command Prompt and enter "ipconfig/release"  (without quotes)
    Then enter ipconfig/renew
    Also try ipconfig/flushdns and ipconfig/registerdns
Are you using IE? Set defaults in Internet Options, Advanced tab. (See below).
Shut down cable/DSL modem and router. Unplug both from AC power for a couple of minutes. Reconnect devices to AC power and energize.
Still having an issue? Run the System file Checker. Instructions are here.
Run boot time hardware diagnostics on the patient.
