Airport extreme and netgear 834dg

Hallo evrybody,
I have a netgear 834dg from some years and it worked fine till now but it is onli 802.11 G and ethrnet it is not gigabite so I bought an AE with sthe subsequent goal:
Connecting my imac g5 by gigabit ethernet to the AE
connecting my mac book to the AE by 82.11 N wifi
having the opportunity to connect a printer to AE
connecting the iternet by my old netgear and having it connected to the wan of the AE
To do this i have only disactivate wifi on 834dg and make the setup of the ae in bridge mode but the netgear is no more abel to connect to internet.
Attention: trouble appears only if i coonect my imac to the ae via ethernet if i disconnect the imac or if i connect it directly to the old netgear evrythingworks but it is not wathi liked to have.
May someone help me please ?

Got it working - just needed to upgrade firmware of my router.

  • Airport Extreme and Netgear DGN2200 Modem Router - Help

    Hi everyone,
I’m from Italy, sorry for my English. I hope I will explain my problem  well enough.
In some weeks  I gonna buy my first iMac (after years and years on Win-PCs). For Christmas my family gave me an Airport Extreme for present. This is the first Apple product that  comes  into my house (..not really an happy entrance until now).
I’m just getting mad about setting this Airport Extreme. I would want to use it as a wireless extender ;  I tried almost all possible setups searching for days on the web , but nothing. It doesn’t work.  The Apple assistance is always busy in the hours I can be at home and the Extreme still remains a well-done-elegant white brick on the desk..
    Situation:
    -     I’m working on a Windows PC now (Windows 7)
    -     I use a Netgear Modem wireless Router DGN2200 plugged via Ethernet cable to the PC
    -     I downloaded Airport utility for windows 5.6.1
    -     The  Airport Extreme is new (5th generation)
    My wish:
    -     Using the Airport Extreme in another room of my house connected wirelessly to my existing Netgear router,  as an extender of the network
    Problems that  I found:
    -     Wirelessly the base is not found by Airport utility
    -     To find the base I have to plug an Ethernet cable from the Netgear Router to a port on the Airport base, but not the first WAN port,  I have to use one of the others.
    -     When I find the base  I try setting-up it with the Bridge Mode, but then it gives errors 6753 or 10057.
    -     I tried to change settings on the Netgear  Router  or  reset them, but nothing ..
    and so on many tries.
If someone of you had  the same Netgear Modem Router (DGN2200)  and use an Airport Extreme base like an extender in bridge mode, please tell me what configuration, in the Router Modem and on the Airport base,  works fine.
Thank you very much in advance.
    Best regards.

I can only create a  “New Wireless Network” (no bridge mode) connected to Netgear Modem Router by Ethernet cable ,  in this way I would have 2 networks, one from the Netgear and another  from the Airport, but the source of wireless will be in the same room (because they will be connected together by cable).
I already provided the instructions for this in my post above. Here they are again:
Configure the AirPort to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, same wireless security and same wireless password as the Netgear network....and...configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to work correctly on the network.
If you do this, then the AirPort and Netgear devices will work together to act like one "big" network. That is because you have two routers producing the same network.
If  I bought 2 Powerline extenders, one connected close to the Netgear Router and the other one connected to power line in the other room,
could I connect  by cable the Airport Extreme to the second extender
If you cannot connect an Ethernet cable from the Netgear to the AirPort Extreme, then you might be able to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the signal over the AC wiring in your home.
I have not found powerline products to be reliable in general when I have used them, so make sure that you understand the store's return policies in advance if you decide to try them.

  • Internet connection loss using Airport Extreme and Netgear DG843

    Hello,
I am accessing internet via a Netgear DG834 router (not wifi), connected to an Airport Extreme base station. Most of the time, I can access internet through the Wifi network of the AEB without any problem. But around once a day I am experiencing connection loss and the only way I found to restore it is to reset the Netgear Router by physically unplungging it.
Both the Netgear and the AEB have up to date firmware, so I suspect some kind of problem in my setup, as I am not an expert in setting up networks.
Is it possible that using a Netgear Router connected to the AE (which is also a router if I understand correctly) could cause connection problems ?
I am at a loss, and do not even know how to describe the relevant informations of my current setup. If a kind soul could help me nonetheless, I would be very gratefull.

to the AE (which is also a router if I understand
correctly) could cause connection problems ?
    Yes.
Ensure that that the AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
Also ensure that the AEBS is on a different channel to the DG834G.

  • Airport Extreme and Netgear DG834G v2 very slow

    Hi,
I've just bought an iMac 17" dual core and I'm having problems with slow download speeds when connecting to my wireless network: I have an Airport Extreme card and a wireless ADSL Netgear DG834G v2 router. All my machines on this network all have acceptable download speed but when I use my mac, the download speed is very poor. For example, I tried to download a file on my XP machine and got a rate of ~250kb/sec but when I use the mac, I get ~40kb/sec. In general, internet browsing on the mac is very slow.
    Things I've tried:
    1) Plugged the mac into ethernet and that is working fine so the wireless connection seems to be the problem.
    2) Put the XP machine and mac (both working wirelessly) at the same location - the mac is considerably slower than the xp machine.
    3) I've downloaded and installed all the latest updates and firmware for the mac but this has made no difference.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try next?
    Regards

  • Airport extreme and Netgear powerline extender problem.

II setup a Netgear Powerline Extender/Adapter on my airport extreme network. Followed all the instructions to get the extender/adapter to see each other but when i finally plug the Adapter via ethernet into my airport extreme, i lose internet connection and airport utility no longer can see my Extreme which i use as the base station. What am i doing wrong?

If you verify that the LAN ports are all working on the AirPort Extreme, the next troubleshooting step would go as follows:
Plug both power line adapters (PLA) into the AC sockets
Connect your computer using an Ethernet cable to the "remote" PLA
Connect an Ethernet cable from the PLA near the AirPort Extreme to one of the LAN ports on the Extreme
Can you get a good Internet connetion on your laptop at the "remote" PLA end?
If yes, then we have verified that the connection is good through the "remote" PLA.
What device to you plan to connect to the "remote" PLA?
If you cannot get a good Internet connection at the "remote" PLA end on your laptop, try another Ethernet cable just in case. If that does not help, there is likely a problem with one (or both) of the PLA devices...since the Ethernet signal is not being delivered to the "remote" PLA.

  • Airport Extreme and Netgear DG934G

I have just got my broadband activated yesterday. Using the Netgear router (the dark grey one) I can access the internet but range is not great.
This is what I would like to do.
I have an airport extreme which I used with Virgin with no problems and it has a great range. I also have Apple tv and an Airport express which I use to stream my music to my kitchen. I have a macbook and my partner has a Vista Laptop.
I would like to use the Netgear as a modem only and use the Airport Extreme as my router to distribute the ip addresses.
Can this be done? If so can anyone tell me what settings to use?
I know I can turn of the wireless on the netgear and wire it with ethernet into the extreme but I am unsure as to what settings to use on both.
Can you also have a g network with the Netgear and an N network with the Airport Extreme?
    Can anyone help?

I know I can turn of the wireless on the netgear and wire it with ethernet into the extreme but I am unsure as to what settings to use on both.
You would turn off the wireless on the Netgear following the directions in the Netgear User's guide.
You would configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).
Can you also have a g network with the Netgear and an N network with the Airport Extreme?
Sure. Same settings as above except the Netgear would be configured with the wireless enabled.

  • Roaming network with AirPort Extreme and Netgear R6300

    Hi there everyone
I need to know if I can make a roaming network with my apple AirPort Extreme as the base station and then I want to use an Ethernet cable to connect to a Netgear R6300 which will be located at the other end of my house where th connection is poor via wireless.
So is this possible with this set up and if so how do I go about configuring each router to make it work?
Will I need to make both SSIDs the same so I wan wander through the house and stay connected to the same network?

Do not even bother to link wirelessly.. Apple do not allow it.. nor probably does the netgear.. there is no proper standard to wireless link routers.. it is a case where everyone does what is right in their own eyes.
    Roaming is the best anyway..
SSID = Wireless Name must be the same.. and use short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric names.. not apple type. You can set a different name for 5ghz.. imho that is the best idea.. but up to you .. roaming and band swapping at the same time leads to chaos.
WPA2 Personal = WPA2 AES security and is the only standard that should be used now..
Password for wireless the same. 10-20 character mix upper and lower case + numbers.. keep it pure alphanumeric.
And now the tricky one.. channels.. there is only one difference between the different wireless stations and that is channels. You can leave everything at auto.. but if it leads to trouble fix them on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz.
    Use non-overlapping .. see
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
Which show the 2.4ghz channels very clearly.. you will need to work your way around the 5ghz a bit because it differs so much region to region.

  • Airport extreme and netgear

    Hello -
I have an aiport extreme router with an express extending the connection. I've set the extreme to 5ghz as it seems to perform (i.e. not drop connections) better.
Unfortunately, when friends / family try to jump on my network, they can't connect. The network does not show up. When I switch back down to a/b/g, etc it seems to work. I don't like that approach however as it affects my wireless connection to my macbook.
I am looking for options ... One solution might be to power up my netgear router so that non apple devices can connect and I won't have to mess with the wireless connection. Can I simply plug my netgear router into my extreme to get things working?
What other options can be offered?
    Thanks!

Yes, this should work, but be sure to reconfigure the Netgear router as a bridge to allow the AirPort to continue to provide NAT & DHCP services for the entire wireless network. Since your operating your AirPorts in the 5 GHz radio band, you won't have to worry about Wi-Fi interference from the Netgear if it's operating in the typical 802.11b/g 2.4 GHz band.

  • Best way to set up AirPort Extreme with NetGear CG3100D-2

    Hi All,
I Just purchased a Airport Extreme and what to use it on my current cable broadband network. But i have a few issues with doing this, due to my exsisting setup.
Here is my current set up.
NetGear CG3100D-2 which i have 2 Port forwards set up on this router (i have 2 CCTV DVR's connected via ethernet to this router, so i can remotley view DVR's).
    2 Apple TV's  ( 1 connected via ethernet and 1 wifi)
    Multiple wifi devices.
Here is what i would like to achieve on my Network.
I want to be able to remotley access my 2 CCTV DVR's and also be able to access my AEBS-USB External HDD Remotely.
I have tried so many ways of connecting AEBS but havent be able to achieve what i want from my network..
I have spent hours trying to do this so any help or information would be much appreciated.
If the solution is difficult to set up could i get some step by step direction on how to achive this if possible..
    cheers.
oh and i have access to airport utility 5.6 and i am obviously running Mac (apple household)

My gut feel is that the bottleneck is the link from your home to your ISP.  Airport will not address that issue.
I'm not familiar with AT7T U-verse.  Is that DSL or cable.  If it's DSL, be aware of the following...  The nominal data rate is 700Kbps.  Optional (extra cost) versions are available at 3Mbps and 5Mbps.  In all cases, these nomal rates are valid only if you live in a tent on the phone company's central office.  Physical distance from the C.O. will reduce the actual rates.
Nominal cable rates range from around 3Mbps to as high as 30Mbps, depending on how much you're paying for the service.  Unlike DSL, these nominal data rates do not change with distance from the provider.  However, also unlike DSL, the cable data rates will change when neighbors are using the system as the facility is shared.  (With DSL, you have your own physical wire pair to the C.O.)

  • Airport Extreme with Netgear Powerline 200 to use Airport Express on other side of house

I currently have my Airport Extreme set up on one side of my house.  I have an Airport Express that I want to set up via a Netgear Powerline 200 adaptor on the other side of the house.
When I plug in and connect the ethernet cable to the Netgear Powerline adaptor from the Extreme I see 2 green lights.  When I plug in the other Powerline adaptor and then plug into my Macbook Pro, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet from the powerline.
I figured I would ensure that I am getting a signal before confirguring the Express.
Any reason why I wouldn't be able to plug in a device to get an internet connect directly from the Powerline?
Any recommendations for setting up the Powerline?

When I plug in the other Powerline adaptor and then plug into my Macbook Pro, I can't connect to the internet via ethernet from the powerline.
Powerline performance simply cannot be predicted in advance of any installation.
Remember that the products are designed to work on the same electrical circuit and any change to another circuit can and will introduce phase shifts in the signal, not to mention significant loss of signal strength and speed....despite what the advertising or salesguy might claim.
I have had one brand work well trying to get a signal to a location a few rooms away, while another brand will not work in the same installation. Yet, the same brand that did not work well in my home worked fine in a neighbor's home when we tested there.
As a test, locate the problem powerline adapter somewhere in the middle of the house to see if you can get a reliable connection  when you check the signal at that location.. If it is OK, then move the adapter a bit further away from the main AirPort Extreme  and test again. You get the idea.
Try a few different rooms as well to see if one might work better than another.
You may likely have to accept a compromise locationf for the AirPort Express and hope that it will provide enough signal coverarge for the other end of the house.
I figured I would ensure that I am getting a signal before confirguring the Express.
    Good plan there.
Any reason why I wouldn't be able to plug in a device to get an internet connect directly from the Powerline?
I think that we have given you some ideas already. In most cases, there is little that you can do other than move the powerline products closer together, or simply experiment with different locations to see one electrical circuit works better than another through the main electrical panel.
Sometimes a different brand will miraculously work when another won't.
The bottom line....as we said initially.....it is not possible to predict how well.....or if.....powerline products will work in any given installation. You won't know if the products will do what you want in your home until you try them in your home.

  • Airport Express and Netgear powerline extender

I use my Airport Express for airtunes only on my wireless router. (It's a Netgear Rangemax WPN824). The station is in range of my wireless router and has worked fine to date.
I recently bought a powerline extender for my network (a Netgear WGX102). I put the extender in the area of my apartment that was out of range of my router. It is, however, in the same room as the Airport Express. In other words, the Airport Express is in range of both my wireless rounter and the powerline extender.
What happens is that the airport express station drops off the network when I have the powerline extender working and/or the extender doesn't work when Airport Express is.
Ideally they would work together so that I could be online and stream music. I can't seem to make it happen.
I've tried excluding the Airport Express from accessing the extender by limiting access to just the PC's, but that didn't make a difference.
Clearly there is some conflict but I don't know how to resolve it.
Unfortunately my router does not seem to support WDS, which would mean I could use my Airport Express as a bridge. (Or at least Netgear says it isn't and I'm not technically savvy enough to hack it if in fact it is.)
Is there anything I can do?
      Windows XP Pro

I would like to understand why you need to set up the AEX as "create a wireless network" instead of "extend a wireless network".
"Extend a wireless network" is used only if the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express are communicating together using wireless only...not Ethernet.
"Create a wireless network" is used only if the AirPort device has an Ethernet connection....which it does in the type of setup that you have.
It just seems counter intuitive to me and I'm trying to get smarter about the whole networking thing.
All the info about all the different types of ways to provide additional wireless coverage is contained in this Apple document. It's on the main forum page, but users tend to either ignore it, or perhaps miss it.

  • I'm having a hard time setting up my external hard from with my AirPort Extreme and Time Machine Backups.

I have been using a Mac Mini with an external hard and Time Machine.  I bought an Airport Extreme and have had problem setting up the hard drive using the USB port on the Airport Extreme.  I also just recently bought a Mac Book Air and hope to have both computers back up to the external hard drive using Time Machine and Airport Extreme.  I have been using the optical drive from the Mac mini to load programs into the Mac Book Air.  I think I'm just getting confused in Finder.  I am just not seeing the hard drive.  I ended up plugging the hard drive back into the Mac Mini and that is work fine again.  How do I setting the external hard drive up to the AirPort Extreme and use for both computers?  Or at least to start with the Mac mini.

It's critical to understand that Time Machine (TM) stores backups differently between local and network drives. That would mean the TM backup on your locally attached USB hard drive will not be directly useable when it is connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). There is a way to copy a local version to a network version, but it is not fool-proof. When you do connect this drive and point TM to it, TM will start a brand new backup, leaving your existing backup as is.
If your current backup is critical to you, you may want to consider getting a second USB drive to attach to the Extreme and use your existing one as a backup ... or use TM's multi-backup process to backup to more than one destination drive alternatively.
So, at this point, you may want to make a decision on how you want to go forward to help provide a solution for you.
To directly answer your question, when you go to select a destination for a Time Machine backup, the drive(s) that show up under "Backup Disks" are those that TM already recognizes and has backed up to. Those listed under "Available Disks" are drives (either local or on the network) that TM can back up to.

  • Airport Extreme and external HDD - cannot be found under Windows (XP/Vista)

    Dear All,
I am about to loose it. I have an Airport Extreme (7.4.2), most recent version (802.11n)connected to my cable modem. Attached is a 2TB HFS+ Formated HDD. I have a number of machines. My primary machine is a Dell XPS with Vista and MacDrive installed.
Now: On my AirPort utilities through the Dell the different HDD's connected via USB (I have tried half a dozen) are all visible. They are shared and I have tried all options, e.g. "with Disk Password" etc, tried to give and deny access to guests etc.
I have tried various things incl. switching off the firewall has not been a success either. I am basically ready to buy a Mac now, but I am worried that the problem will persist for all my Windows based PC's.
Who can help with a step to step guide? tried the TCP/IP settings on the XP machine as well (entering the IP address of both Airport Extreme and Express).

    Hi!
I've got the same problem as of Friday when I upgraded my Notebook from XP to Windows 7.
It does not recognize the HDD anymore, neither on the Windows7 Notebook nor on 2 different XP- PC's.
I disabled the password functionality and removed the HDD several times, no change.
When I look to the data volumes overview in the system settings, all internal HDD's and the CD partition of the Toshiba drive are shown. The HDD partition of the drive is shown as "non allocated".
Is there any workaround to get access to the data????
    Best regards,
    Helmut

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.
