Airport Extreme conection

I use the airport extreme as as switch and wireless AP. The connection is like this: Internet > Modem > Router > Airport Extreme > computers.
From teh router to the Airport Extreme, do I use the Wan on the Airport Extreme or the LAN port?
Also can the SSID for 5G and 2.4 G wireless be the same or hasve to be different?

Normally, you would connect to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme. But, since you have another router ahead of it on the network, the AirPort Extreme should be configured in "bridge mode"
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet icon > Connection Sharing = "Off (Bridge Mode)"
When the AirPort Extreme is configured as a bridge, it does not really matter whether you use a WAN or LAN port. They all behave the same.
Also can the SSID for 5G and 2.4 G wireless be the same or hasve to be different?
The default setting on the AirPort Extreme will assign the same wireless network name (SSID) to both the 2.4 GHz network and 5 GHz network. If you want to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network, you would do the following:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Wireless tab (below icons) > Wireless Network Options
Enter a check mark next to "5 GHz Name" if you want a separate name for this network. If this is already checked, if you uncheck it, then both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands will use the same name (SSID).

    Try this......
Fingers Crossed its working! For now 3 days and still going.
    Open Airport Utility
when your base station shows up ( good luck it kept vanishing when I did this )
    in Manual Setup / Summary
Wireless mode > access > MAC Address Access Control Local
(set up every devise you want to connect to - Wireless clients gives you the codes)
Wireless options > (tick) Create a closed network and Use interference robustness
Hope this works for you all too and keeps Working!

I have the EXACT same problem, intermittent bars, click on the network name and you get brief connectivity, and - perhaps most importantly -- this only really started in the last 4 - 6 weeks or so. There must have been some weird update back in November/December.
Unfortunately Apple is doing it's usual thing: No response.

  • Airport extreme loses touch

I have an airport extreme conected to a linksys cable modem and networked to a G4 and an emac both running 10.3. This setup worked flawlessly for 4 years. Then without any changes I could no longer get access through the base station. The network shows up and the signal is strong. I did a firm reset and got everything to work again for 3 or 4 days before the problem started anew. This cycle has been going on now for over two weeks. I have updated the firmware and the software. There is a surge protector on the power supply. I can connect the G4 directly to the modem so I dont think it is the cable.
Can anyone offer me a suggestion on how to permently solve this rather frustrating issue?

The AirPort Extreme built-in your iMac is a wireless adapter (much like the one built-in the iPhone). It is not a wireless router. However, you could use your iMac's OS X Internet Sharing feature to share the iMac's Internet connection to the iPhone ... effectively turning the built-in wireless adapter into a software router.
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Setup the Network
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[Ethernet port] iMac > (wireless) > iPhone
    Enable Software Firewall - iMac
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
    Enable Internet Sharing - iMac
    System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    AirPort Options...
    o Network Name: <anything you want>
    o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    o Password: (optional)
    o Confirm Password: (optional)
    o WEP Key Length: (optional)
    o Click OK
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
    o Click Start

  • Airport Extreme losing USB-printers

I have the latest airport extreme conected to two printers (a HP 1020 and a Canon 3000) through a hub. I purchased this to solve my problems and not to create new ones... Anyway, my problem is that the printers do not show up in airport utilities. Or, in fact, they DO show up occasionally and I have been able to print to them but if I disconnect the cable or restart the AE they disappear. Sometimes they show up after about 4-12 hours and sometimes (like now) they don´t.
It´s totally annoying, impossible to trace and very, very unlike apple to have a product that doesn´t just work.
    Help anyone?

Just a note: sorry about the double-posting of this. I waited for two minutes and nothing happened, then I pressed "post message" once more and BAM! A duplicate post!
I also would like to point out that there´s the same problem wheter I use firmware 7.3.1 or 7.2.1.

  • My Pcs don't see any wireless conection to airport extreme

I have a Fujitsu laptop and an HP entertainment center with media center. Both are wi-fi enabled. I installed the airport extreme station on my imac G5 it works great. But when I tried to connect the pc wirelessly they don't see any wireless conection. What I have to do was conect the entertainment center with a network cable to the base station, so I can share my internet conection. Despite I put the base station right in front the pcs, they dont see it. I want to have real wireless in my apartment.

    Hi Lisetica:
When you set up your Airport Exterme Base Station, did you select "Create a Closed Network"? If so, this will prevent your SSID from being broadcasted.

  • Airport Extreme Upstairs conected via switch and cat6 to time capsule downstairs.  Is it possible?

I have used an airport extreme connected to my cable modem for a while.   This is upstairs in my office.   Reception downstairs in my den was spotty at best.   I had a time capsule I was no longer using, and set it up downstairs as an extender.   This some what worked, but the reception was still hit or miss.   I have now wired my house with Cat 6, and have a switch set up in my office.   My question is:  Is there any way to hard wire the time capsule in with the wired network, but still have it extend my wireless network?   I would also be ok if it had to be a second wireless network all together.   I forgot to mention, any time I hook the time capsule up to the network, either through the WAN port or one of the others, it seems to crash the network.  Thanks!
The set up is as follows:
Cable Modem - Airport extreme - Switch - wall - Time Capsule (I hope).  Any input would be appreciated.

    OK, thanks for the info.
I assume that you have verified that the Ethernet cable is working at the end where the Time Capsule will be located. If not, temporarily connect the Ethernet cable to the laptop and turn off the wireless on the laptop.
Make sure that you can get a good Internet connection that way, which will verify that the Ethernet cable is working.
If you cannot get a good Internet connection this way, do not proceed until the issue has been resolved. Turn the wireless back on at the laptop when you are done with the testing.
With the Time Capsule powered on for a few minutes...but the Ethernet cable not connected yet....hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear.  Just below that, click on Time Capsule
(The screen shot below illustrates an AirPort Express instead of a Time Capsule)
As soon as you click on Time Capsule, AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analyze the network.
After a minute or so, AirPort Setup will indicate that the Time Capsule will be set up to "extend" the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Time Capsule and click Next
AirPort Setup will indicate that the network is being setup to "extend using Ethernet". When you see the message of Set Up Complete, click Done.
The Time Capsule is now providing a wireless signal with the same name and password as the AirPort Extreme network, so devices will be able to move or "roam" from one area to another and stay on the same "big" wireless network.
If you want to assign a different name to the Time Capsule network, open AirPort Utility and click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Change setting for Wireless Network Name. You can keep the same password if you want, or assign new passwords for the Time Capsule network.
Click Update to save the new settings.

  • Airport Extreme dropping conection

Our church has recently purchased a Mackie DL32R sound board. This board runs off an iPad and I have an Apple Airport Extreme connected to the boards ethernet port no internet is running through the Airport and it keeps disconnecting from the board. this is a dedicated router for this board and nothing else is on it. Would it be better to use a static IP address?

You can run it in router mode or in static IP mode.. it will still kick up errors that no WAN connection is available. But that should not stop the connection.
it keeps disconnecting from the board.
What is "it" in this sentence.. the airport extreme keeps disconnecting or the ipad??
What model is the extreme? Running what firmware?

  • After setting up airport extreme to my existing wireless network after restart unable to conect even the light is green is telling me need to manage network im usin airport utility in pc

I try to set up my airport extreme thru my existing  wifi network using airport utility 5.6 on pc after i was done said that after restarting unable to located extreme to check in my manage networks Ican se green light on extreme but can not find in network to manually add on. Any help woul be appreciated!

If nothing works, try a factory reset: disconnect the Extreme from power, press the reset button, plug in power while still pressing the reset button, release reset button after 5 seconds or so.
This method usually helps me with problems with my Airport Extreme and Express (this happens seldom by the way). The only disadvantage is that you have to set it up again completely.

  • Why can't I conect to my Mac Mail from Airport Extreme?

It has worked perfectly for over a year then stopped suddenly last night.
This is the error message I get...
    "Connection Failed
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "[email protected]" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The server "pop.patternglass.com" cannot be contacted on port 110."
I can get it connecting computer directly to Comcast cable, but not Airport Extreme. Oddly, I can get mail from my old aol email account ([email protected]) but not from my primary email address ([email protected]) via my domain name (earthlink hosted).

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences >
    Network, choose Network Port
Configurations from the Show popup menu,
and make sure that the configuration used to connect
to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Okay, I moved Airport to the top of the list.
    Restarted Mail - no change.
    Restarted Computer - no change.
    Reset Airport - no change.
Restarted computer again - no change.
Weird thing is that I can SEND email from Mail - just can't receive.
So it has to be the incoming server port?
    Location = Wireless
Show = Network Status with Airport first in line.
    I'm getting desperate....

  • Argh! Trying to Replace Linksys with New Airport Extreme...

Been fighting with this for hours...about ready to take the new Airport Extreme back ...Here's the deal:
I currently have a very wired and wireless 2story home professinally set up with 2 Linksys devices as the primary network and a couple previous generation airport expresses as extenders.   Due to video, audio and other systems the primary router for the network/WAN closet out in the garage needs to remain on the primary Linksys (non wifi) router.  I want to replace the Linksys Wifi router (see below) that is puposely set up and has worked for several years as a double NAT config with the new Airport Extreme but i have tried duplicatiing the exact configs from the Linksys router and all the various ways you can use the Airport Express in DHCP/NAT and even in Bridge mode and it still wont work!  I've never considered Linksys software easier (and definately more flexible and informative) to use than Apple until this experience!  Very frustrating....  I'm being very explicit and using the typical Linksys config profiles below so as to hopefully help you translate this into specific configs i can wrangle into the Airport Extreme to make it work like the
    Current Primary Network:
Current WAN Router / + 24 Port Switched LAN Network (for wired ethernet access ports used throughout house) > Linksys BEFSX41 + Linksys 24 port Switch locted in a custom built data /video / audio closet in garage
    WAN IP:  DHCP
    LAN IP:  192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Current WiFI Network > Linksys WRT160Nv2 (currently conected to the 24port switch via a hardwired ethernet wall port upstairs in my office)
    Internet Connection Type: Static IP
    WAN IP:  192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    LAN IP:  192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Per config notes from the network engineer who i worked with to build this network when i built the house
"this allows the 192.168.0.x wifi device to successfully route to the 192.168.1.x wired router (and vice versa)"
My goal is to replace the Linksys WRT160Nv2 with the new Airport Extreme (whose range and ability to reach both upsatirs and outside to the beach is MUCH better) and locate it DOWNSTAIRS and connect it in the same way as the Linksys (via an ethernet port in the living room) to the same switch / router in the data closet.
I have tried to set up the new Airport Extreme to replicate this config several different ways both bridged and not bridged (including telling it to ignore the double NAT warning) with the latest.   I am pretty sure non-bridged is the right way to do it but i seem to lack a config parameter to tell the Airport Extreme to replicate the equivalent of the WRT160Nv2 settings despite trating all the submenues and options on the airport extreme set up / Airport Utility App.  Do i have to telnet directly into the Airport Extreme config files to do this natively?  Help!
PS - no i cannot / will not put the Airport Extreme in to replace the primary Linksys router in the data closet - there is no way it will fit or that its wifi could penetrate the EMI and insulation of all the other electronics in the data closet out in the garage and get a good connection into the house

The trick on the airport extreme is to change the DHCP .. when you change the DHCP it changes the actual IP of the AE..
So go to the setup and open the dhcp, in the network options and you can select by arrow the first two octets and replace the third.
I just posted info on this in another post..
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5134560?tstart=30
Does this answer your question, as I am a bit unclear otherwise??
I have to say I do not like using double NAT.. it is becoming worse and worse as the amount of material on the internet that requires interactive connection increases.. you block so much by doing this.. double NAT is an issue .. not just ignore the warning.
There is no reason why you need double NAT.. you should have a single flat network. If you need to keep some things isolated from others the correct way to do it is vlan.. but you will need a better router than the old linksys to do it. And possibly a managed switch. Nowadays a managed 24 port gigabit switch is not a bad price at all.

  • Can a time machine usb drive backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme*

can a time machine usb drive conected to my mac book backup the data from an external usb drive connected to and airport extreme ?

Hi Adam, if you think yoiur HD may be failing you could do a TM restore onto the new disk. I would rather see you do a clone either SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.Of your internal drive. That way you have a bootable backup in case it does fail.
btw - what are the symptoms of your failing drive?

When I start Bonjour for windows it identify de printer, but when i continue my printer is not in the list, I used the browse buttom and selected the .inf file that is contained in the driver and Bonjour collapsed everytime

    Thank you guys
    Hola:

What model and firmware is the 2TB TC?
    What firmware is the AE?
Does the AE get good signal from the TC in its current location?
Signal can only be extended that is received intact.
Is it extending on 5ghz? As I remember it a Gen2 AE is only single band, although you can choose either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
I am fairly sure you are going to tell me your TC is AC model..
I would do a couple of things..
    1. Fix the wireless name, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    2. Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz so it is not going to jump around.
    3. Get real results from the AE in its current location for signal strength.. this is really only possible on v5 utility. And that is a double pain with Mavericks because you cannot use it.
Apple have removed all the useful diagnostics from the airport utility. There is next to nothing left. So you need to use the computer and its diagnostics to find signal levels in the location.

If you are using the Lion or Mountain Lion operating system on your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the amber dot, and another window will appear to explain why the amber light is blinking
What is the message?  If everything seems to be normal, the message might indicate that an update is available for the AirPort Extreme.
If you are using the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system on your Mac.....
Open AirPort Utility using the path above
Click on the AirPort Extreme, then click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page)
