I nearly fainted when I just read your post. I bought the new airport extreme on June 24, 2011, just as the store was closing -- 8:45 PM. At home it worked well right out of the box, but the next morning it has been nothing but trouble. I wracked my brain to figure out what could change overnight, and your suggestion that it was updated by firmware is logical. Oddly, it works well with my desktop, which is less than two feet away (I don't use ethernet), but in the next room over it is fast only sporadically. I replaced the prior extreme because it suddenly quit, and the genius spent some time diagnosing it and concluded it no longer worked.

I have already done a complete clean of the iMac, to no avail. Have read the recommendations for adjusting chaneels, etc and I've done that too. The iMac has clear line of sight and is 20 feet away distance from Airport Extreme. Ok you have a 3rd generation 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) that is capable of providing a simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi networks. By default, the Radio Mode is set to "Automatic." Which means that it will support 802.11b/g/n wireless clients on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n clients on the 5 GHz band.
Your wife's iMac, on the other hand, only supports wireless as a 802.11b/g client. That means it is only capable of connecting with a maximum bandwidth (speed) of 54 Mbps.
Any time a non-802.11n client connects to a 802.11n network, it basically "slows down" that network for other 802.11n clients like your MacBook Pro. The only option I see at this time to improve bandwidth for both your wife's and your Macs is to consider getting a wireless 802.11n USB adapter for the iMac. A number of vendors sell these. One of them is Other World Computing (OWC). They are inexpensive and should dramatically improve the bandwidth performance for her iMac.

Airport Extreme - USB Hard Disk Runs Slow

I have the new Airport Extreme with a USB hub connecting to an HP printer and a Hard Disk. Everything works fine except the HD is very slow in Windows Explorer, saving and opening files. The access and speed to the disk from my macbook is great. Runs very slow from my dell laptop running XP.
I am running the Airport Disk Utility.
Any ideas how I can speed up the performance from my Dell laptop w/XP?

I've had a similar problem, but unlike you, the drive's contents completely disappear... I dont dare try to add anything to the drive in that condition.
Here is what seems to work, but I am still fiddling with it. I am a PC Windows XP environment, with 2 wireless laptops and 2 desktops. I was having trouble with the reliability of the drive until I reformatted the airdrive as a MAC HFS+ file using MacDrive. This creates some of its own problems and hence this suggestion might not apply to you. The problem seems to arise when I unplug and reconnect the drives from my Airport. When I plug it in directly to my PC, it says there are some volume errors. When I run the repair facility (kind of like chkdsk on FAT32 drives) and then reconnect to my AEBS, it seems to work. You might want to try that. Hope this is helpful, but clearly, Apple needs to issue a patch to resolve these issues.

Airport Extreme running extremely slow..

Ok, so for the past few weeks or so my internet connection has become terribly slow during the night time. I have harassed the service provider every other day about it and they have sent reps out here twice already to look at my setup, both times saying that everything looked alright. They have sworn up and down that my connection is fine the entire time and that the issue might be with my router but I have refused to believe it.
Let me just ask though, could it be the router? Basically my connection is fine during the day, but at nighttime it gets really, really slow, and sometimes just drops out completely. If I go next to the router it gets better sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. Here is the thing though, tonight when the wireless connection dropped I plugged the modem directly into my computer and the internet was working again. It wasn't as fast as it is during the day time, but it was still a decent connection, whereas I was getting nothing at all from the wireless. This leads me to think that it may be the router. What can I do about this? Firmware update? Take it to the Apple Store to get the hardware checked out? Do I need to buy a new router? Please Help!

Hmm a few thoughts on this.
Have you secured your wireless network so that your neighbors aren't picking off free internet access at night when they are home? I would log into your router and see if you have others connected...
Is a cordless phone causing you connection issues, when you went wired your connection reappears so that makes me suspect interference of some sort.
I find our cable internet speeds can slow down at night as more neighbors are online but that doesn't sound like the problem if it clears when you go wired.

How can I tell if my Airport extreme is actually running at "n" speed?

I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) with an attached HDD that I use for storing photos etc.
When I try to access the photos with my MBP it is extremely slow. (so slow and frustrating that I usually take the notebook and sit beside the HDD so I can plug it in directly ... not exactly convenient)

Any non-"n" wireless client (including the 802.11g AirPort Express), connected to a "n" network, will reduce the overall available bandwidth for "n" devices. In addition, to allow these devices to connect, your network must operate on the 2.4 GHz radio ... which has a maximum "n" bandwidth of around 130 Mbps. The 5 GHz, with dual-channel enabled, would provide your "n" clients with 300+ Mbps.

This would be the correct setting if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port).

5 GHz name indicates that you have elected to use the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network. This will allow you to "tell" compatible computers to connect to that network, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz network
Use Wide Channels is recommended for 5 GHz operation.
Interference Robustness often does more harm than good and should not be used unless you know you are in a area with a lot of wireless networks and you feel that your network is experiencing interference issues from a nearby network.

Best configuration for Time Capsule & Airport Extreme running one wireless network?

We just moved to a house that does not have Ethernet pre-wired so I've had to re-setup the wireless network in a different configuration and it seems we're experiencing deteriorated wireless signal for devices like laptops. It will work perfectly fine (and fast! wheee!!!) but then it will slow to a crawl and mostly timeout. before I reset everything and start from scratch, I'd like some help. As an FYI, when connected via Ethernet to either of these, Internet is blazingly fast… so my problem here is the Wireless portion.
As some background, here is how we had the network set up in the previous house which was working great (although it was wired for Ethernet which made things A LOT easier):
Airport Extreme (4th Generation)
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
Internet Facing (Connected to the Cable Modem)
Location: Upstairs Utility Closet (with Smartbox and cable modem)
Time Capsule (1st Generation)
Wireless Mode: Extend a Wireless Network

My understanding is that the Airport Extreme should pick up and relay the signal downstairs, as well as provide the router for the devices downstairs that need Ethernet (TiVo, Apple TV, etc).
So, my question is (and thank you in advance for helping me sort this out!), what would be the best configuration to optimize the Wireless performance in the house?
Also, for whichever device is the one picking up the existing network and providing the router capabilities for the Tivo and such, is it possible for it to pick up but not rebroadcast the signal? I think in this new house we may have a good enough signal from the office, without the need to rebroadcast it. My theory is that in this house, they are too close together and interfere with each other and/or devices aren't sure which to choose so they bounce back and forth endlessly. Again, just a theory.

I would recommend the Automatic setting on both devices because this will allow each router to scan and choose an open channel automatically. If you want to set the channels manually, keep them separated by at least 4-5 channels. You would not want to ever use the same channel for both devices in this type of "roaming" setup.
Is there a way to limit bandwidth per device (or action) so that it doesn't monopolize the network and keep other devices from using it?
Nothing that I am aware of. It sounds like you have some young users who are likely visiting Bit Torrent sites, which will really gobble up the bandwidth with big, heavy downloads. The Time Machine has to back up the same files again when it makes the next pass, so that clogs things up again.
Backups would go 3-5 times faster, on average, if the computer(s) could connect using Ethernet, but I understand that wires are not cool with the younger crowd.

The AirPort Extreme should be set up in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule...it depends. If the TC is connected to a simple cable modem...then the correct setting for Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address" on the TC. That is because a simple modem has only 1 IP address to deliver. The TC takes that address and "shares" it with other devices by setting up a local network for all your other devices.
If the TC is connected to a gateway....a combination modem/router in the same box that usually has 3-4 Ethernet ports on the device....then that device would be considered the main router on the network and the TC would be configured in Bridge Mode in that case to function correctly on the network.

I'd pay good money to bet it wouldn't last 5 years... I don't rate the in built power supply and as for "server grade hard disk" - Hmmmm..... The failure rate of all HD's on the market after 3 year is 60%.

I'm thinking of buying an Apple TV but as far as I know I'll need my computer on to run movies from my iTunes account, which is something I really don't want to do every time I want to watch a movie, just wondering if this can first of all be confirmed?
Also, If I buy Apple TV and an apple time capsule (or an Airport extreme connected to a HDD), can I stream movie files located on the time capsule (or HDD) to the AppleTV without having to turn on the computer and run iTunes?

Yes you need your computer on if you want to stream from its library, even if the library is on an external or network drive.
However any purchases you have made from iTunes can be stream from the iTunes Store at any time without your computer being on.

Can't connect to internet via AirPort Extreme with Laptop running Vista

I've seen a lot of posts on this topic, and maybe I'm just out of luck, but anyway...
My PC running XP can connect to the internet through the AirPort Extreme, but laptop will not. I load the AirPort Utility on the laptop. Should I be able to see the base when I run the Utility? It does not see it. I can see the wireless network with excellent strength, but all I can do.
If I can't get this to work, I'm going to just return it and to back to the wireless router. I was enticed by the ability to connect the printer and external hard drive to the base. I would like to get rid of the PC and just use my laptop for everything.

Looking over your original post again, I think I might have misunderstood you the first time. If I understand you correctly, your Vista laptop can see the wireless network and connect to it (so you have access to the Internet), but you cannot see the Airport Extreme Base Station when using Airport Utility.
If your Internet connectivity is not an issue and it's just that you can't see the base station in Airport Utility to configure it, try using an ethernet cable to connect your Vista laptop to one of the LAN ports and see if the base station shows up in Airport Utility then.

Bear with me please as I have never used the community before. I have an Airport Extreme 1st generation at least I think it is a 1st generation. My PC is hardwired and my Mac Pro, obviously wireless. I have 50/8 mbps service but the speeds on my PC run around 20/8 and 30/8 on the Mac. Cable says it is a problem with the airport since my PC speeds rise to 50 when the airport is disconnected. The simplest way would be to perform a "soft" reset on the AEBS. This type of reset will temporarily disable all of the AEBS's passwords up to five minutes. This should give you ample time to access the AEBS with the AirPort Utility to change it.
If you don't want to actually change the password, then you can possibly retrieve the password from the OS X Keychain, as follows:
Run the Keychain Access utility found in \Applications\Utilities
In the category column (on the left side of the utilities' window), select "All Items."
In the right column look for your Network Name. It will have a "Kind" of "AirPort network password."
Double-click on your network name listing.
Click on "Show password."
Enter your Mac's administrator's password
Your wireless network's password should now be displayed.

Yes, if you set up the new AirPort Extreme using the guidelines above. The 10.6.8 Mac will be able to connect to the AirPort Extreme, but it will not be able to make any configuration changes.

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

I am running an older airport extreme v7.6.4wireless router with a new netgear rn104 server and cant get the server to show in the MacPro hardware or the on the wireless router

How do I adjust the settings to get this Netgear server to show and use the Airport Extreme and show up on the hardware of the McPro?

The server is never going to show on the airport extreme.. it is not wireless.. unless you happen to run v5 airport utility. Most are running v6.
Is the Netgear setup for dhcp .. the display on the front of the netgear should be showing its IP address.

I presume both are plugged into the AE by ethernet.. if not please do so now.
To open anything but Apple products like AE you open the IP in the browser.. simply type that IP on the front screen of the NAS into your browser. If it doesn't connect you have the setup wrong and something is not using DHCP.. in that case tell me exactly what you are getting.
