Airport Extreme with Gigabit Ethernet - Does it have jumbo frame support?

Please, can I get definite answer to this question? I do not need speculations as I read some reviews already. Can we have Apple finally put complete specification of the product rather than "popular one" with attachement of protocol numbers?
I just need simple answer possibly from Apple engineering team to the following questions:
1. Does current Airport Extreme have support for jumbo frames (everything above 1500bytes per frame)? (if one does not know what that is them perhaps understanding acronym "MTU" can help a bit)
2. If there is support then what is the maximum supported size of jumbo frame? (Some products do not go above 6k and I read some statistics that traffic somwhere is usually 66% at about 4k jumbo frames and above that there is not much...)
3. If there is no support then does Apple plan on update for this (firmware or hardware) in the future?
Please, do not tell me that someoene ran something with jumbo frame and it worked as I tried yesterday LaCie Ethernet drive with supposedly setup (I set it myself) of jumbo frame 4k and on soft reboot of the drive it worked when connected to Airp[ort Extreme, but after hard reboot the disk is not visible anymore. I will recover the disk, but I need to understand if I have chance of using jumbo frames that tremendously improve performance with large files (e.g. try movies stored for AppleTV on network drive) when using Airport Extreme with its gigabit Ethernet... or that is just Gigabit Ethernet for product marketing purposes only.
I just need reliable answer by product specification that should be on paper at Apple, but it is not so I hope that one of guys here has access to some engineering team.
Thank you,
Maciek Samsel

  • Airport extreme with T-Mobile Wi-Fi cellular phone

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to properly pair my airport extreme to a T-Mobile Wi-Fi cellular phone. It work for me for a short period of time and than the signal would drop. Then the only way I could get back on the network was after
    I restarted the airport extreme.

If you search the Internet and around here this has been a problem ever since UMA Calling (WiFi Calling Service) and this router has been paired up. Calls would get dropped in the middle or switched over to the EDGE network in mid stream even if you were in the same room with your wireless router. In my research this did not happen on true B/G version of the Airport Extreme but only on the N capable version. Yet the vendor sites are generally silent on this but a search thru discussion forums and you will find it.
I have a Blackberry Curve with the Wi-Fi on T-Mobil about two months ago and gave up.
I got excited this morning when I saw the 7.3.1 firmware on the system to upload to my Airport Extreme N (Gigabit Interfaces). I have loaded it on my Airport Extreme N right now. I just finished calling Comcast (since I know it takes forever to go thru their system). Call lasted over 3 minutes without being dropped or switched to back EDGE. Just made another call for about 4 minutes with the same affect. This is looking good.
I just got off another call for with T-Mobile Support (I am testing as I write this) for over 5 minutes. No dropping and no switching over to EDGE. The support guy was kind of surprised that it was working. They have not been informed a fix but he was not surprised if there was a fix and they were not aware of it. You have to feel sorry for the 1st line helpdesk guys.
I don't necessarily want to claim victory in this because I sometimes have been able to get longer calls with the old firmware but this definitely looks promising. Three calls in the relatively short time between them without any noticeable issue which rarely or never happened.
I know I am at Apple forum but at least Microsoft gives a list of issues that are supposed to be fixed by their patches or Service Packs. I could not find one here for this. All it mentions is the generic term "big fixes".
As always with any firmware upgrade make sure you have the most recent version of "installer" software. This case the Airport software appropriate to your OS Version and verify that version of the software is compatible with Firmware 7.3.1.
Please be aware that I make no warranties by any of these statements....so if it does not work or you toast your Airport Extreme N router... don't sue me. I am from the old school of IT support and Firmware upgrades was the last thing you did because it can go horribly bad and was the fastest way to toast a piece of equipment. Even with the modern installers and such I am still cautious about it.
    Good Luck to you

So you agree to the lose of the Airport Express removal has caused me to lose enough of a signal to make the Internet...
Sorry but I'm not sure what this long run-on sentence is trying to say.
You asked if the network could be wirelessly extended and that is what I replied to.

  • Airport Extreme has been updated with Gigabit ethernet - so soon!!!

I just bought a brand new state of the art AE two months ago and then Apple just updates it with Gigabit ethernet so soon after?! I feel cheated in every way!

If you want to measure speeds - actually the Kona disk utility is a pretty decent free tool you can use - it's typically used for testing disk for media encoding/decoding, but it's got a nice graph you can look at to see what the drive performance looks like over time.
To make sure you're running as fast as possible - try connecting the disk directly (assuming you're using a USB-2 bus and a USB-2 hub) and transferring files, then compare that to what you're getting across the AEBS .. also try eliminating the hub - I've found many hubs that are "rated" as USB-2, but don't run very close to rate. With the older AEBS you should get 100Mbps wired and 130Mbps with 802.11n .. best case is you're running about 25% of what the USB-2 bus is capable of.
oh, and you can verify your connection speed with Network Utilities -- look at the Info tab for each of your interfaces to see your negotiated rates

    Rufus Cat-
Even if it was compatible, AirPrint does not work through a USB link, only Ethernet or WiFi.
I do not see your HP 4500 listed on Apple's list of AirPrint compatible printers.  <iOS: AirPrint 101>  Therefore you need to take another approach.  To start, I suggest you download the free HP App, ePrint Home & Biz.  It has limitations, but should get you printing with your existing setup.
There are other printing Apps with more features such as Print n Share and PrintCentral, but they can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.
Your best option may be to share your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  Programs that are reported to do that well are Printopia and FingerPrint.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh>  <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

  • Extend wireless airport extreme with airport express with through ethernet cable, extend wireless airport extreme with airport express with through ethernet cable

i want to extend my wirless range i using airport extreme upstairs and airport express down i have ethernet cable linking the two but airport express seems to go wireless and is extremly slow any help appreciated

Start with a "hard reset" of your Express - press and hold its reset button continuously, about five seconds, until its LED flashes rapidly. You will need to reconfigure all its settings.
Connect it to your Extreme with your Ethernet cable. Using AirPort Utility, configure its Internet Connection to "Connect Using" > "Ethernet" as in the following screenshot:
If it had been previously configured to "join" a wireless network and you connect its Ethernet cable to your wired LAN, you may experience what you are describing.

I have an airport extreme 2013. Why does my airport utility sometimes display IP addresses and other times the names of the devices? I want it to always display the device names.

The utility has had less and less useful information .. it might be time to simply find a different utility.
Fing network scanner. iphone and ipad.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/fing-network-scanner/id430921107?mt=8
This is very popular.. I do not know of what works well on Mac OS because i have installed 5.6 utility which of course has far more info than the later toy version. Plus using an Asus router which has excellent listing of all the clients.
Sometimes beating yourself up to make apple routers do what you want is easier solved with lateral thinking.

  • I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  How can I password protect certain files?

I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB external HD connected to it.  I have it set up so my Macbook Pro and PC's in the house can access it.  i have some files that i would like to protect(sensitive personal info.).  Is there a way that can be done where as certain folders are password protected?  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks!

Would a good workaround be to use disk utility to set up a password protected sparse image, of course being connected directly to the Mac, then connect the drive to the Airport Extreme?
Then, couldn't one use that drive and protected files as normal on the airport? It would just require one extra step of using a Mac to set things up first.
I disconnected my Airport so cannot check it out for myself.

  • I have an airport extreme with a USB printer attached (non-airprint).  Can i print from my ipad?

I have an airport extreme with a USB printer attached, it is a non airprint printer.
I can print via my network from my desktop but I want to know if i can print from my ipad 2 and ipad 1

Printing from an iPad or iPhone
To print directly from an iPad you need an AirPrint - enabled printer on the same wireless network as the iPad. All AirPrint printers are wireless but not all wireless printers are AirPrint-enabled.
If you do not have an AirPrint printer, a number of workarounds exist that enable the use of any printer you normally use, even older ones that may predate AirPrint by decades. Search for the following products:
    handyPrint (Mac only, donation-supported)
Printopia (Mac only, $19.95 with free trial)
These are utilities you install on the Mac you normally use for printing, enabling it to act as an AirPrint print server. The Mac must be "on" but may be asleep for them to work. The iPad needs nothing else, no iOS apps need to be installed and no configuration is necessary. If your computer can print, so can the iPad, using one of these utilities on your Mac.
Equivalent utilities may exist for PCs but I have no experience with them - I suggest https://www.collobos.com
You can also buy this standalone hardware print server, bypassing the need for a computer altogether:
    http://www.lantronix.com/it-management/xprintserver/xprintserver.html
Otherwise you will need to buy an AirPrint printer or multifunction device.

  • I have replaced my airport extreme with a new airport time capsule and want to know how I can set up my extreme to extend/strengthen my Wi-Fi?

I have replaced my airport extreme with a new airport time capsule and want to know how I can set up my extreme to extend/strengthen my Wi-Fi?

Start with a "hard reset" (see below) then use AirPort Utility to configure it.
When asked what you want to do with it, indicate that you want it to add to an existing network, similar to the following screenshot.
Follow the prompts that will eventually lead you to the words "wirelessly extend..." as shown.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • How Do I Connect An Airport Extreme With Password to another Wireless Devic

We have a setup for two different wireless devices so that there are multiple locations that can get online, but the entire setup has no passwords assigned. We would like to assign passwords to both wireless devices so that only the appropriate people are getting online. How does one do this?
The first wireless device that connects directly to the modem from the phone company is a brand new Apple Airport Extreme. The computer that set up the device so that people can get a signal was from a PC that is directly connected to the Airport Extreme via an ethernet cable. Also connected to the Airport Extreme is an ethernet cable that goes (50-100ft) to another wireless device - by Netgear - which then sends out another signal to pick up wireless internet, which is the signal/network that I work from.
If we assign a password to the Airport Extreme, I'm guessing it will complete screw up the connection to the Netgear. How would that be dealt with? And, how could we then, if we wanted, set up a password for the Netgear as well. I've read some initial information on the user guide CD and online, but I don't know the terminology of whether these are networks or just wireless devices 'bridged' together, etc.
My biggest concern, is it works right now, but the owner of the devices wants to put passwords on it and I want to make sure we can keep it working even with passwords. Does anyone know how to easily set up passwords and can I do it from my computer even though they were initially set up by a PC? Or do I have to do it from the PC and if so, how, because I am completely a Mac person and am very unfamiliar with Windows. Thanks.

Question that I need to know now is how do we set up a password on the Apple Airport Extreme now, when it is already set up and working without one?
    Open AirPort Utility.
Select your base station, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a password scheme from the Wireless Security pop-up menu.
Enter the password all users will need in order to join this wireless network.
AirPort Utility 5.1 Help: Password-protecting your wireless network
Also, are there different types of passwords and if so, what is the most reliable one so that we don't lose connections, time out or have any other quirks?
There are different types of wireless encryption. WPA2 and WPA are the most secure especially when used with a non-dictionary password. 128 bit WEP is passable in most situations but not very strong. 40/64 bit WEP is extremely weak.
There is really no general "reliability" issue with any of them. Some devices aren't compatible with some of them.
If when we assign a password to the Apple Airport Extreme and for some reason the Netgear stops working, how do we unassign/take away the password on the Airport to get it back to the current setup that we know does work?
Follow the procedure above but disable wireless encryption instead of enabling it.

  • What is the best way to hookup my airport extreme with my time capsule ?

what is the best way to hookup my airport extreme with my time capsule ?

It sounds like you have the AirPort Extreme configured as the "main" router on your network.
If that is the case, connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule
    Power up the Time Capsule
Connect another spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Macintosh HD > Applications  > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule, then click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons and make sure that the setting for Wireless Mode = Off
Click the Internet icon, the click the Internet tab
Insure that the setting for Connect Using = Ethernet
Insure that the setting for Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click the Update button at the lower right of the window and wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
Then power cycle the entire network by powering everything off....order of power down does not matter
    Wait a minute
Power up the modem first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme next and let it run a full minute
Power up the Time Capsule next and let it run a full minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until the entire network is back up
You will need to reset the backup path from your Mac to the Time Capsule to get backups going again
Open System Preference (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click the Time Capsule to highlight it
Click Use for Backups or Use Disk and backups should begin again in a few minutes
If you do not want to leave the Mac connected to the Time Capsule by Ethernet, remove the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Time Capsule, then log on to the AirPort Extreme wireless network

  • Configure an older airport extreme with an ipad1

I'm a complete noob regarding wireless. I bought an ipad1 and an older aiport extreme (the white round one) off of ebay and am not sure how to get it all up and running. My Mac Pro does not have a wifi card so I can't use that. I plan to connect the airport to my router via ethernet. I've read that you can't configure an airport extreme with the ipad. What do I need to do to set up the extreme so the ipad can see and use it?
    thanks

If the extreme is already configured, can I edit it using the app?
Sure, if AirPort Utility recognizes the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise, you have to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Extreme and start over from scratch
Open AirPort Utility, select the Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to get to the wireless settings.
You want Wireless Mode set to "'Create a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name is your choice
Radio Mode = Automatic or 802.11b/g
    Channel =Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password = Your choice
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings.

  • Extend Airport Extreme Network via Ethernet to Airport Express

I am trying to extend a gen 4 Airport Extreme by hardwiring ethernet to a 2nd gen Airport Express and will add a second Airport Express if I can get the first one to work.  I have a large network with a 24 port switch and aiport utility 6.3.2 (most recent as of this date)
    First question:
When expanding my network using the hardwired Airport Express can I name the new network anything I want or should it be exactly the same as the Extreme Network.  I would prefer to name it differently so I can keep track of which network my devices are acturally joining but I will be happy simply to get this to work either way.
    Second question:
After repeated attempts to configure my hardwired Aiport Extreme, I get the following yellow status error:
    Yellow Internet Connetion
    Yellow No DNS Servers
    Yellow Conflicting DHCP Range
    Observation:
Many of the suggestions here and the link posted in a previous post are not based upon the most recent Airport Untility software so that may contribute to my lack of success so far.  I am using the most recent version.

Even though the express was hardwired to the extreme during the set up process it was choosing to "extend" the 5 ghz network which I have activated on my extreme.  I assume this is okay.  It seems to be.  It offered me no other option during the set up.
Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands will be extended if the extending device supports dual bands.
I configured the express by plugging it directly into the LAN port of the Extreme.  Once configure, I plugged the express into my 24 port switch. It worked.
That's a good way to do things. If the Express works when connected directly to the Extreme, and doesn't when you connect it elsewhere on the network, then you know that you have a wiring or switch issue somewhere.
I choose to keep the express network name and base station name the same as those on the extreme.  They worked.  Since I really want to keep track of which network I am logged into, I later changed both the network name and the base station name for the express and it seems to all work under the new names.
Either will work, as long as you don't mind logging on and off of networks to switch. Most users prefer to have one "big" network. Then, they can walk a laptop from one area to another, stay on the same network and the Mac will automatically switch to pick up the strongest signal from the closest access point.
I activated the 5 ghz on the newly configured and newly named express.  It seems to work.
    As it should.
While configuing the express I got the error message metioned above a couple times.  I kept trying the same procdure with out changeing anything and eventually it worked.
I can't duplicate that issue, but glad that things worked after a few tries.
Since my AppleTV on the second floor has difficulties connecting with the extreme, I am thinking of plugging it in to the express directly.  How do you feel about this?  WOuld I be better off running another separate ethernet wire off the switch?
Always the best plan to connect any network devices using Ethernet if you can. The best networks are the ones with an Ethernet "backbone".  You can connect the Apple TV to the Express or the switch, whichever is easier. Personally, I prefer to connect devices to a switch if possible just to keep things simpler and make any troubleshooting easier.
This whole system with an extreme, 3 expresses, 3 appletvs, 12-14 cameras, a 24 port switch and up to 50 devices on the network at one time (computers, phones, ipads, etc, etc) works reasonably well considering the demands I put on it.
That's quite a home network. Glad that things are working. I am sure that you notice better wireless performance now with the two AirPort Express devices wired into the Ethernet backbone.
If we could get more users to set up their networks this way, most of the complaints that we get about slow wireless, intermittent connections, etc would go away.
It's not easy to run the Ethernet cable for some users, but I have yet to hear from the first user who ever regretted doing it.
