Airport icon grey

My airport icon has turned grey and I can't get online. My iPad still connects to my wifi and whilst the iMac sees the network it just won't connect. Restarted the mac, router several times. Is there a hardware utility that allows me to repair the airport?
Thanks in anticipation of help.

  • Airport icon grey after installing software update Security Update 2007-004

Yesterday I installed Security Update 2007-004 (10.3.9 Client)(April 19, 2007) and since then when I wake-up my iBook (which was functioning fine prior to closing it and puting it to sleep) the airport icon is greyed out. The only way to get the airport icon to be black (functioning)is to restart the iBook.
Has anyone else had this issue or does anyone have any ideas. I an running 10.3.9 on a 2 USB port G3 iBook with a snow airport.
    Thanks.

  • Airport Icon greyed out after Yosemite upgrade

    I just upgraded to Yosemite.
I use my imac 27" as a wireless router in sharing.
Since the upgrade, the airport icon is grey and my mac does not share its internet connection (hardwired via ethernet)
    Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks
    Andrew

Yes sadly that was going to happen as Apple no longer supports iPhoto, instead there was a new app called Photos bundled with the upgrade to 10.10.3.
It is the new colourful icon in your dock and Applications folder and launchpad. click on that and it should automatically migrate your iPhoto photos into the new app.
You could try this first, although I'm not sure this will work as your version of iPhoto was a very old version, 9.4.3 was the most up to date for Lion
and Yosemite was running version 9.6.1. Go to the App Store and click on the purchases tab and see if it is possible to upgrade
your iPhoto app. if you can then great, you can use both Photos and iPhoto.

  • Airport icon greyed out - Airport card failure?

The Airport icon in the menu bar is "greyed out" implying my computer (iBook Powerbook 4,1) is too far from the wireless base station. However I am typing this question on another iBook that is less than a foot away from the problem machine.
The older computer did not have built in Wireless capability and we purchased and installed an Airport Extreme card. This was maybe ten years ago.
I suspect that the Airport card has simply reached the end of its useful life and is unable to pick up wireless signals but would welcome any thoughts anyone else might have

  • Airport Icon Greyed Out with Up Arrow Over It

I have a PowerBook Pismo G3 with an original airport card. Worked fine to connect to wifi networks. A grandchild fiddled with the settings in the internet/file sharing/airport/??? panes and now I can't connect wirelessly to anything.
What does the Up Arrow over the Airport icon in the menu bar mean?

    Hello MartaGo,
    Welcome to the  Discussions!!!
Look in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet and see if Internet Sharing is on. If it is, turn it off.
The arrow through your Airport Menulet indicates that your Mac is acting as a Software Base Station and is using your Airport card to wirelessly share your internet connection (ala Airport Base Station).
I used my Mac Mini to do this while I was waiting for my Base Station. Worked great for my wife's PB.
    Hope This Helps,
    Jeff

  • Airport icon turned grey, no networks shown

    G4 Quicksilver running 10.4.11
Last night after several years trouble free operation Airport on my wife's G4 suddenly started cutting out and then coming back in. Sometimes it was off for a few seconds, sometimes for a few minutes. Restarting didn't cure the problem.
This morning it was steady for several hours, then started cutting out/in, now it seems to be mainly out.
What happens is this. The black airport icon turns to grey with all bars still showing and connection is lost. When this happens available networks were initially sometimes shown in the drop down menu, sometimes not (usually there are four or five neighbouring networks shown).
When networks are shown clicking on ours sometimes, but not always, brought it back on.
When no networks are shown going via ‘Other’ and entering our details initially brought it back but no longer.
At present the Airport icon is showing grey with four bars all the time.
I have tried reseating the Airport card and checking the aerial connection but these seem OK. (I’m assuming that the existence of four bars at all times shows that a signal is being received so card problems are unlikely; is that right?)
    I have deleted com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
I have zapped PRAM and repaired permissions.
I booted from an external HD (10.4.2) and the same problems appeared. The fact that the same problem exists with another boot disk suggests to me that the problem lies in the G4 rather than software.
    Any ideas, please?
(I started a similar thread in the G4 forum which has had no takers so far and as Tiger forums seems to get more Airport traffic I thought I would try here.)

    +”Get Temperature Monitor - 4.51 to see if it's heat related”+
I’ve used Temperature Monitor in the past and it only shows drives, not CPUs on our G4s. (Reading round this seems to be a problem with the current version and I can’t find any earlier ones.) However I reinstalled TM and it showed drive temperatures going up and then staying very steady at around 35° for the boot drive (newer) and a bit lower for the original HD. I haven’t actually observed the CPU fan running but air is definitely moving through its vent. The CPU/fan area is clear of dust.
However I’m beginning to go off my temperature theory as the pattern of the problem has changed.
It originally started to show itself when the Mac had been in use for some hours and would then mean that Airport would not show any network virtually continuously until shutdown. Now at boot it may be OK for several hours, a few minutes or not at all. During the day it will sometimes come back for some hours or just minutes.
In all cases the symptoms are the same. The Airport icon turns grey but retains four bars. No networks are shown in the dropdown menu. Turning Airport off/on has no effect. Sometimes it will return on its own, sometimes networks are shown in the menu and connection is then usually possible.
I have now tried booting it from the backup HD I use for my G4 (10.4.11) and the problem as described was present from the outset. To be strictly accurate I booted it from its own startup disk and Airport was OK but when I restarted using the other drive via Startup Prefs Airport showed five grey bars but no networks.
I have also rebooted the router in case that was involved.
With my limited understanding of what makes Macs tick all this suggests that the problem must be within the G4 either in data (but PRAM has been zapped) or hardware rather than being a system issue.

  • Airport Express,  airport icon from black to grey losing signal,

airport Express worked great for a year. It is connected via ethernet cable to an RCA modem and runs a MACPRO QUAD and MBPro. Recently im getting interruptions slow connections/ pages take forever to load. I have tested the MAC PRO to the moden directly and it seems to work great. Wit AExp there seems to be a problem.
I ran Airport utility and it is reporting an error. I wish this wasnt so complicated. is there any one who could tell me how to start from scratch with this AE and get it working again. Road Runner boosted the signal so it is not the problem. The green light stays on. and there are moments when the internet and mail works fast. BUt recently there is slowness and the 3 curved lines ( upper right ) are not always black and 3 strong. this has started to vary.
IS this common with the AE cos i will trash it and get a router to run the two comps i need connected to internet and mail. Any advie

it was unable to upgrade to 7.3.2
    and kept getting connection failed
    connection lost
Your problems could be due to interference on the channel you're using, although this may not be the entire cause. Nonetheless, since your setup worked fine before and you haven't changed anything, suggest you start by seeing whether a good signal can be restored.
Use [iStumbler|http://istumbler.net] to look for a channel that's at least 3 different from any your neighbors may be using, then set your AirPort Express (AX) to that channel and reconnect to it. If you don't get full bars in the AirPort icon, try another open channel.

  • Wifi icon greyed out, but connected

Just got a new iMac and everything was running smoothly, until I noticed the wifi icon in the menu bar is greyed out. When I click on it, my connection shows with all darkened bars in the list, but the icon at the top is still greyed out. Can anyone help with this?

Have you by chance moved any system files?
Click the AirPort icon in the status menu bar to make sure it's turned on.
Could be your router. Check out this article >  http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/wifi-dropping-in-os-x-lion-fixes/

  • Missing airport icon in menu bar HELP PLEASE

Okay, I have a g4 powerbook that came with tiger.
I am missing the airport icon that once was there in the menu bar at the top right-hand side.
What I've done: ran disk utility, = all's well, check for software updates = all's well there too., and the most obvious, check the box under system pref. for airport config.
I check it and it is does, nothing. I go back to system pref. and is unchecked again.
IM AT A LOSS. Anyone with this problem PLEASE help.
    thanks...

    muecyl,
Do not concern yourself with the other files that you found at that location. Just leave them where they are.
Since your problem is also related to some extent to System Preferences, you may benefit from trying the procedures outlined by Dr. Smoke in Try the following....
Another possibility is to download and reinstall the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo for PPC.
    ;~)

  • Airport icon does not appear

The "About this Mac" dialogue in my Mac Pro shows I have Airport Utility 5.5.3. BUT, I go to System Preferences - Network to select "Show Airport Status In Menu Bar" and there is no Airport icon. I click the + to add it and it does not show up as a selection. All I get is Firewire, Ethernet 1 and 2 and Bluetooth.
My Airport Extreme DOES show up in the Airport Utility box when I click on Airport Utility but I can not set it up as a wireless connection. I have the Extreme hard-wired to the Mac Pro. I also have a Mac Mini and I had no problem installing that computer as a wireless connection.
The problem appears to be that the Airport Utility for some reason, is not showing up under System Preferences - Network. Instead, it is being used as an Ethernet connection.
When I bought the Extreme, I asked Apple for help. They refused to give me any help with the Mac Pro because it is "out of warranty" even though I think this is NOT a Mac Pro issues per se but it is an issue with the Airport Extreme that IS under warranty. I will not pay for support because I do not at all believe that a company should charge to support their products. Charging for support is just wrong.
    Any help would be great.

Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to work correctly with the AirPort Extreme. Unless you purchased a drive that was specifically formatted for Macs, the drive is likely pre-formatted for use with PCs.
Use Disk Utility in your Utilities folder under Applications to format the drive if needed.
Often, it helps to use a powered USB hub with a drive...even if the drive has its own power supply....since the USB port on the Extreme is borderline as far as its power capabilities.

  • No airport icon in network settings

    Hi there,
I've read hundreds of threads about the airport problems on the macbook pro, as i got the "no airport installed" notification when clicking on the icon.
I have a Macbook Pro 13inch and reinstalled it and now my airport icon on the desktop is all gone and i can't find it either in network settings.:S
If i look at my hardware setup it shows the airport card.
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this without opening the macbook all the way?
    Cheers
    Bram

The Airport icon is in the menu and not on the desktop. System>Preferences>Network. Check the box, "Show Airport status..."

  • Airport Icon wont stay turned on..

    Hi Guys
For somereasom today, my Airport icon on the top right hand of my screen wont stay illuminated and thus, my internet connection keeps dying.
Its fine on my Macbook Pro but not on my Mac Pro desktop...?
At the moment there is just a blank icon with an explination mark on it - any ideas?
Thanx a lot in advance for your help

I seem to be having the same problem. We were in Mexico on vacation, and on the second day I was taking some photos near the water with some highways and some water splashed on the camera, but it seems to still be working for the next few hours. When I stop taking pictures and came back to the camera a few hours after, I tried turning it on and the set date and time settings screen was displayed. After I entered the settings, I was able to resume taking pictures. However, when I turned the camera off, then on again, that same screen displayed it again.
The next day, I went to turn on the camera, and the lands would not extend fully and will turn off main extension. When I held down the power button, it would retract back but not all the way. If I hit the playback button, I was only then able to fully close the lens. I'm thinking now in hindsight, I should have not tried to turn it on, and just put it in a bag of rice right away, but it's probably too late for that now, and since I'm thinking the water that got on it was salt water from the ocean, it might have corroded some terminals or some electronics inside, I'm not sure. But I don't think I want to pay $200 for Canon to just look at it, and then come back to me saying they can't fix the camera. The warranty has just run out, and I think I might be better off just buying a new camera.
