Airport using 100% cpu on 20" Core 2 Duo iMac.

My 10.4.8 C2Duo 20"iMac has this strange problem with the airport. I have it connected to a linksys router.
Every now and again, especially after waking up from a sleep I notice that the iMac is running a little slowly. When I then go into activity viewer to analyse the problem. I can see that the "airport" process is using 100% cpu, i.e. one of the cores. It seems to be in a loop of some sort.
When i force quit it, the iMac speed returns to normal and wireless connectivity is not dropped or affected in any way
Anyone seen this? Any ideas? Its strange, and irritating.

Start with this:
Open System Preferences, select the Network pane and select AirPort in the "Show:" popup menu.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Preferred networks."
Delete the listed preferred networks using the "-" button but this time we did not add it back again with the "+" button as Apple recommends.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Automatic."
Restart.
Manually rejoin the AirPort network using the AirPort menu icon, i.e. selecting the network (or selecting "Other" and typing in the network name if hidden) and typing in the WPA (or WEP) password.
If you are using the Checkpoint Secure Client software, then you need to uninstall it.

  • Itunes 8 using 100% CPU on one core.

    Hi Guys,
Since today Itunes seems to be using up 100% CPU on one of the two cores. This happens shortly after i started it - for example when i play a song.
After a few minutes it will be reactive again and then i can choose another song - after which it will hang again. It also hangs when changing for example from Films to Music. I have the idea that it happens when i click the Music library - but am not sure. I disabled AV for the itunes library folder - but that didnt change anything. This has been working fine until today. I even uninstalled and re-installed version 8. The only thing that might be related is that when i upgraded to ver. 8 i used the update function in itunes - which didnt work as well - left me with some unusable shortcuts etc. But the app itself was working.
    OS is vista.
Just saw that this is for the store only - Moderators please move if possible.

  • All programs using 100% CPU, freezing, crashing, -10810, -600, and -1712 errors

Okay, so. I have a Macbook Pro from December 2012, a little over a year old.
    Version 10.9.1, running Mavericks
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB
    Startup Disk - Macintosh HD
I can send more info if I need to. I'm a graphic designer using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign usually simultaneously, as well as Spotify, Messages, Sparrow (mail), Stickies, Tweetdeck, and Evernote. I also use a wireless mouse, drawing tablet, and second screen. This has never been a problem (I mean, my old computer had 4 GB memory and handled these programs just fine, except for Final Cut Pro 7) up until recently.
For the last two months, my computer has been seriously out of whack.
I'm constantly having to refresh finder
Every time I open Google Chrome, all of my extentions crash immediately and any website I try to go to is extremely sluggish (but Safari works)
    The dock freezes
    Constant error messages: 1712, 10810, 600
    Audio fails randomly
Overall, the problem seems to be that I can't do more than one thing at a time -- I can't take a screenshot if more than two programs are open, I can't open DMG files, I can't open Spotify if any Creative Suite program is open. I've been watching the activity monitor, and it seems like each program is trying to use 100% CPU, which doesn't seem right. I have to close every program to work in Photoshop, which makes me miss calls and emails.
I've tried restarting in safe mode, verifiyng the disk and repairing permissions, I used time capsule to restore to a time before it was happening, and restored my user profile in Chrome. I'm at my complete wit's end trying to figure this out! I feel like my next step is to just reinstall my OS completely, but that would be a major setback for getting my work done, and I'm not even sure that would work.
I've looked on other forums and it seems like the Mail app typically causes problems, but I don't even use it, I use Sparrow.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP

    Launch error -10810 in Mavericks
I have the same issue since a couple of days. Nothing that I found in the community (rebuilding launch info using Onyx or manually deleting the apple.com-launch prefs) has helped me so far. Only some apps are affected (PasswordWallet 4.7.4 among them).
I can launch it once and it will run fine as long as it’s open. Next time it refuses to open displaying the error -10810 message instead. I trash the app and use a fresh one off the vendor’s dmg file I downloaded and the sequence repeats.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n upgrade options for early Intel Core Duo iMac

I have an iMac from mid 2006. I recently purchased a Timecapsule - partly for the wireless back ups, and partly to upgrade my wireless network to 802.11n. There is a software upgrade from Apple that upgrades older 802.11 a/b/g Airport cards in the iMac to 'n' standard. Here is the link:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=MjIzMDkzNA
The page states that the upgrade is compatible "If you have a Mac with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)". What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work. I have also tried to install Airport Extreme updates (2007002 and 2008004) and these report that the hardware is not compatible. Doing some searching around these forums and others, the issue with the original Core Duo iMacs not being upgradeable to 802.11n is out there - shame Apple weren't more explicit.
I have seen that there are various USB based 802.11n adapters available. Whilst searching on this topic, I also came across a site offering various Mac upgrades, including an upgrade to the Airport card to upgrade wireless capability from 802.11g to 802.11n. It looks like a straight replacement for the internal card - link here:
    http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/productinfo.php?productsid=461
The company offering this is in the UK, but the product appears to be from a Sonnet, a US company. Does anyone out there have experience of installing this product (or having it installed) and can you comment on how it performs? Is it a seamless replacement for the original Airport card?

What it doesn't tell you is that if you have an early version of the iMac (pre-Sept 2006) that shipped with the Intel Core Duo Processor (note - not the Core 2 Duo) then the upgrade will not work.
If it says you need to have a Core "2" Duo processor, then it seems to me they are telling you very clearly that it will not work with the earlier Core (no "2") Duo iMacs.
The "late 2006" iMacs with Core 2 Duo (except for that one education model they mentioned) have wireless networking hardware that is 802.11n capable. When they were initially sold, Apple chose to NOT enable the "n" capability for some reason; maybe because the standard was still in flux and not enough testing had been done with the driver. Later, they enabled the "n" capability with a firmware update. But that was only possible because the wireless hardware was already capable of doing "n."
Earlier iMacs do not have this hardware so there is no way to enable it with a firmware or software update. 802.11g is plenty fast enough for Internet access (you won't notice a difference with "n"). If you are using Time Machine over wireless, it may take a while longer to do that initial backup (you could connected it by Ethernet cable when it is doing that initial backup), but subsequent backups are incremental, so the "g" versus "n" speed difference will not be as critical. Since your iMac is Core Duo (32-bit) and the future of Mac OS X is 64-bit, especially after Snow Leopard's release, it may be best to save your money and keep your iMac intact (not opened).

  • Solution: iTunes 10.5 using 100% CPU / Not backing up your iPhone.

This solution has been documented on this forum by several people, but the solution is usually deep in multiple threads.  I really don't know who came up with it first, but it does indeed work.
I had an issue with iTunes.exe, APSDaemon, and AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe using 100% CPU per core.  (Showed as 25% in Task Manager.)
I could not backup my iPhone and the CPU spike happened as soon as iTunes 10.5 was started on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
    This solved it.
    Sounds stupid but works:
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")
    3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.
    4. Reboot your machine.
    5. Restart iTunes.
    6. ???
    7. Profit!

The netsh winsock reset resolved both the problem of AppleMobileDeviceService.exe using 100% of my CPU and the blank iTunes blank store issue.
XP Pro user here that had gone through the detailed step-by-step process of uninstalling iTunes as described on the support page but both problems still existed.
    Glad I saw this. Thanks.
    Now on to :

  • Upgrade card for Core Duo iMac to benefit from Airport Extreme

I just bought Airport Extreme for "n" speeds. I didn't realize it required Core 2 Duo for the fastest speeds. Does anyone know of an upgrade card I could install to my Core Duo iMac? Thanks.
iMac Core Duo, iMac Core 2 Duo, MacBook Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There is an article floating around the web of
removing the 2 antennae extreme card from a Mac Pro
and installing it in a MacBook to get 802.11n
connectability, but the connection isn't reported to
    be any better or faster.
Also, everything on the network must be 802.11n to
get the n speeds. A mixed network is slower.
I just took the Airport Extreme 802.11n module out of my Mac Pro and installed in my CoreDuo MacBook Pro. After applying the enabler patch off the CD, my network connection speeds report as 270mb connecting to a wide-band N-only Airport Extreme Base Station.
Performance boost on initial file transfer speeds are significant. A 203mb test file took 6+ minutes on my G-only network. The same file, on the N-only network took 49 seconds.
I would call that both better and faster.
Of course for those looking to use it on the mixed B/G/N networks to surf the web aren't going to notice any difference. I think a lot of people forget that regardless of their wireless network speed, even on the fastest of home broadband connections they're not going to be getting more than 8mbs coming into the WAN side of the network if they're on fiber cable. A DSL connection might get 2mbs. The internet itself for most will be a significant bottleneck for most users.
If you're doing a lot of transfers of large files on your internal LAN, the performance is worth the $49 part.
What's really bizarre is that Apple chose to put 100mbs wired ethernet ports on the Airport Extreme Base Station, which means when I hook a USB drive to it, I should actually get faster transfers wirelessly than wired. How bizarre is that?

  • Apple Mail client (version 8.0) using 100%+ CPU upon using mail drop (13" R-MBP running Yosemite 10.10)

    Hello Support Community,
I am having quite the interesting issue. I have read plenty of reports where users' Apple Mail app is using 100% of CPU. This did not start for me until I went to go use the new mail drop feature in Yosemite. I am running Yosemite (10.10) on my 13" Retina - MacBook Pro (flash storage, 8GB RAM, 2.4 dual-core Intel i5) and my Apple mail is version 8.0. I have tried 3 different mail services (2 gmail accounts and iCloud), all result in the same issue. I have also done a complete erase of the hard disk and a brand new install of Yosemite, the issue persists.
As previously stated my mail app is using 100% upon, and only while, using the mail drop feature. If I force quit the mail app and allow it a minute, the mail app returns to using less than 1% of the CPU and the app and entire system resume normal function. Upon attempting to resend the same message that is placed in my outbox the CPU usage jumps to 50-80%. After a few seconds, the CPU usage will sometimes jump higher than 100%, ranging from 130% - 199%. All of these observations were made using Activity Monitor. Of course you can see my frustration, an app using this much CPU stops every process my Mac is doing (using safari, messages, iTunes etc.) - the whole computer locks up. Even force quitting is a difficult process to attempt.
Does anyone have a fix for this? I am at a loss and have no idea what to do. I am a pretty tech savvy guy and have tried everything that I would've thought would fix this. Is there anyway this could be a hardware issue? I don't think so but... all possibilities need to be taken into consideration, even though that one seems outlandish. Upon creating a new user account with a separate user library (but same system library) I figured the OS was the problem. I can't narrow it down to being a specific mail provider, and it can't be my OS since I have now erased and reinstalled 10.10 twice. Thank you!

I have this same issue.  It has been driving me insane, Mac Mail uses 100% CPU most of the time I use it, after every time I open the machine, or after a sleep or even mostly after a screen saver has locked me out.  It normally settles down after 5-15 minutes, but then happens every time again.  It is killing my battery.

  • My 2011 intel dual core duo iMac apparently has "Airport" ans apparently it is "on" although the icon (upper right) is gray. I'm not sure what "airport" is

My 2011 intel dual core duo iMac apparently has "Airport" ans apparently it is "on" although the icon (upper right) is gray. When I click on the <gray> airport icon it says it's "on" and the option is to turn it off.
I'm not sure what "airport" is, and I have no idea what a router is supposed to accomplish. I got a "smartphone" (not an iPhone, an android) and at a "Smartphone class" at the senior center I was told I need a router.

    Oly wrote:
OK, so, in installing a router could I attach the router to my Verizon DSL modem and have the iMac get it's internet from the router by wi-fi?
This way I could place the router 1/2 way between the only two places in my home where wifi devices (wife's tablet, my iMac) are.
    Yes, exactly.
For the router I suggest you consider one of the three Apple AirPort Base Stations, not only because it will be easier to get help with using them on this website, but they are generally regarded as the most reliable wireless routers. Technical support directly from Apple is free for the first 90 days.
Slightly cheaper alternatives exist. I have tried other manufacturer's wireless routers, and I don't recommend them.

  • Elements 10 Playback uses 100% CPU 0% GPU

When I play back a video clip in the Elements 10 environment the video is choppy and my system is using 100% CPU and 0% GPU.  When I play back the same files in Sony PMB the CPU runs at about 15% and the GPU runs at about 50%.
Is there a way to get Elements 10 to use the GPU?

    Windows Vista SP2

I am using the trail software now and will buy if I can get it working.
    Thanks!

Certainly when rendering PRE uses as much of the processor capacity as possible (somewhere in these forums I posted a screen shot showing all my four cores at 100%).
But in normal use I don't notice it hogging all processor power. I wonder if you have selected the right project setting for your video.
What Sony camera are you using?
What format did you record the video in?
How did you get the clips onto your PC?
What project setting did you use when you created your project?
Do you see red lines across the top of the timeline when you first add your video to the timeline?
As you edit your clips the timeline will show red lines - to perform a render press [Enter] and wait for the lines to go green.
Are you using still images in the project? What pixel dimensions are they?

  • 10.5.2 Uses 100% CPU for about 10 mins

Everything was fine on 10.5.1 but 10.5.2 on Windows 7 32bit seems to use 100% CPU (iTunes.exe) for about 10 mins before settling down. I was just about to post 100% CPU when I saw it was back to normal so I closed and reopened it and the same thing has happened. PC has been restarted since it was installed.
Any idea what is causing this? Can I downgrade - if so, how?
PS: it's actually using 100% of one core.

Check out this Apple article -> iTunes 10.5 for Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
If you have one of the LSPs mentioned, you may have to do a winsock reset or remove the conflicting software.

  • Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server

    Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?
    Thanks

  • Finder and loginwindow use 100% cpu with 10.6.8

I recently installed the patch to OS X 10.6.8 and now the finder is very unstable and uses 100% cpu and the loginwindow uses 100% cpu also.  Yes I have Parallels 6 on this machine but I already "un-checked" the "show windows applications in doc" option which is the recommended solution.  However, this did not fix the problem.  I do not know how to determine what actual process is causing this finder / loginwindow issue.  I very much appreciate if anyone has suggestion how to fix this problem.
This is on a mid-2011 MacBookPro.
    thank you.

TBauer, I had the same problem with 10.6.8 using 100% of the CPU with Parallels 6 installed.  The following steps solved this problem for me:
    0.  Take a screen shot of your Dock if you wish to remember it as currently set
    1. Launch Activity Monitor and click on the CPU column so you can see Dock using the CPU
    2.  Move   ///Users/ ...  /Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to the trash
    3.  Click on Dock and click on Quit Process to stop the Dock
OS X will then rebuild the default Dock
    4.  Put the items back in the Dock that you want
That solved the problem for me yesterday morning.  I've launched Parallels 6 several times now and moved the machine from my work network to home and the 100% CPU problem hasn't returned.
Hope that works for you, too!
I don't think using the combo updater will solve the problem.  The problem appears to be a .plist that is generated with OS X 10.6.7 and earlier that contains icons of a larger than Apple documented size causes the CPU looping.  Rebuilding the dock.plist under OS X 10.6.8 appears to solve the problem.
Parallels has issued a knowledge bulletin saying they are looking into the problem.  On their web site they have another approach involving moving the offending icon out of the dock to solve the problem.  I like my solution better but theirs works, too.

  • ITunes will uses 100% cpu and will not close in OSX Lion

When I start up iTunes, after a few minutes, the fan kicks on and Activity Monitor shows that it is using 100% CPU. The fan kicks up and the MBP gets warm. I have to force close to get it to shut down. iTunes match is constantly running, so maybe that has something to do with it?
I'm not running it in Mini Player mode or anything like that, so I'm not sure what's causing the problem. Any thoughts on how to diagnose it?

I also have this problem which has been getting worse with recent successive updates of Firefox. As a long-time user and advocate, I am about ready to look for an alternative browser. Firefox will not close and exit properly, requiring direct cancellation through Task Manager; starts up very slowly (often 1 to 2 minutes); and frequently locks up the CPU with 100% of cycles while doing NOTHING; offers to restart crashed sessions, but cannot recover and reload those sessions; will not operate correctly while any other application accesses the internet, like uTorrent. Firefox is set to delete cookies, etc. whenever the session closes, sqlite database is vacuumed regularly, CCleaner regularly wipes remaining accretions, and disk is defragged. Currently running 3.5.5 but will NOT upgrade until this problem is solved since later builds report the same problems. I know several other users who have experienced the same problem and I can no longer automatically recommend Firefox to users and clients. Is anybody paying any attention to this problem? What is being done to address this fault? Why is there no response to the original poster? Is this really a support forum or just a way to preoccupy and distract the users who suffer this malfunction? Wireless 54Mbps connection. No Adobe Flash, QuickTime, MS Silverlight, etc. installed on this machine. Firefox 3.5.5 with the following add-ons:
    Aardvark 3.0
    Adblock Plus 1.2.1
Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper 1.0.6
    Free Download Manager plugin 1.3.4
    Highlighter 0.1.4
    MR Tech Toolkit 6.0.4
    repagination 2006.4.5.1
    Save Complete 1.0.1
    Session Manager 0.6.8.3
    Tab Mix Plus 0.3.8.4
    Unhide Passwords 1.2.5.1
    User Agent Switcher 0.7.2
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

  • New DVD writer on Satellite M40-193 uses 100% CPU

    Hello anyone,
recently I have replaced my DVD-writer with a new one. My laptop is a Satellite M40-193 (PSM40E-06M026IT) and the original drive is a Mat****a UJ-831B. I have replaced it with a Sony-Nec Optiarc AD-7633A because I like the slot-in feature and the Labelflash feature.
Unfortunately it makes me a problem. It will use 100% CPU every time I use it. I cannot figure out the problem. Is there anyone who can help me? It is a software problem or hardware?
    Thank you.

After six days this is the only help I can get on this forum: "...this optical disc drive is compatible with your notebook model?".
The ATA communication bus is a standard.
The exsistence of a compatibility list does not means that ONLY those drives present in the list can work with the relative notebook.
Those drives are the ones tested and the ones that Toshiba says: "this drive surelly work" but not says "this is the only drive that work".
In fact I have RESOLVED the question with a little software I have found on another forum and now my drive works perfectly and I have a newer and more featured drive than those in the list.
    Thank you Mike

When I log in to EM, I can see section
    Host CPU
    It is 100%.
I have only instance named "parama". and it uses 1% CPU ant the picture shows that 99% CPU is used By Other.
What is Other? Why does it use that much CPU?
I had another oracle instance few months ago, but I is not used now (it is not even started).
How do I restore normal system performance?
    Can I kill these processes?

    Hello,
I have a similar problem. I see 2 perl processes related to Oracle that are taking up 99% of 2 cpus. These 2 perl processes have been running for days and keeping the load average high (above 2) on a mostly idle system.
The 2 perl processes are running:
    /oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/perl/bin/perl /oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/sysman/admin/scripts/db/dbarchfull.pl
    and
    /oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/perl/bin/perl /oracle/app/product/10.2.0/db_1/sysman/admin/scripts/db/dbresp.pl
Has anyone seen this problem? Can I kill the perl processes?
