Airtunes issues - Cannot select Remote Speakers

I bought a new MacBook and am running Mac OS X (10.5.7) and using iTunes 8.2.
Previously I was able to play music through my remote speakers connected to my airport express using airtunes. With my new laptop, iTunes shows my speakers but they are greyed out and I can't actually select them. I can only select "Computer"
My iTunes preferences does have "Look for remote speakers connected with Air Tunes" selected.
Any ideas why it shows the speakers/base station but is greyed out and I can't select them?

I'm having the same problem with a G4 laptop running 10.4.11 and iTunes 8.2. I've tried random stuff like reconnecting the speakers to the Airport Express, restarting iTunes, renaming my airtunes speakers, etc. Some of this is obviously just desperate attempts to feel productive. If anyone can help figure out why I can see the name of the speakers on the menu in iTunes, but can't select them (they're grayed out) - I'd be stoked.

  • Cannot select multiple speakers ( airport express)

cannot select multiple speakers in itunes ( have two airport expresses) ... tries to connect and then always times out.

Only firewall I have is what is standard on my mac, and if that is what your talking about, I do not know how you do that UDP traffic thing.

  • Cannot See Remote Speakers

Downloaded version 6 and can no longer see my remote speakers. Wife has an iBook and it sees the remote speakers so I know our wireless LAN is OK. I've disabled my Firewall and restarted my router and airport express and still cannot see the speaker selection box.
    Any thoughts?

Yep, all that checks out. I can stream music to the speakers from my iBook just fine, but the PC Desktop (with the big, fat hard drive filled with all our music) doesn't work as well. The PC won't see the external speakers. Running iTunes from the iBook, I can "see" the PC's music collection, but it only works for, say, ten to fifteen minutes and then the iBook "loses" the PC's music collection.
The PC is connected to an Airport Express for it's internet connection. The internet keeps working fine, so I know it's not a range issue. If I hard-connect the PC with an ethernet cable to the main Airport, I suspect it will work fine (haven't tried that since moving this summer, but it worked that way in the old place). Also, if I reset all the Airport Express components, essentially rebuilding the wireless network, then I suspect the PC will "see" the speakers for a short while and then lose them again. Haven't tried that in a few months, when I last got disgusted with the issue.
From what I read on here I suspect it's a bug with iTunes for Windows. Is there any way to send a bug report to Apple?

  • ITunes on  iMac cannot find remote speakers, but iTunes on MacBook can!!!

I have a home wireless network provided by a third party ADSL modem, and an Airport Express connected to a stereo system. My MacBook has no problem playing iTunes music remotely through the AE/stereo system. The WEIRD thing is that my iMac Intel Core Duo is not able to establish a connection to the same AE/stereo system - even though the MacBook and iMac are located at almost the same spot, they are running the same version of OSX and iTunes (all my software is up to date on both computers), and both have no problems connecting to the internet through the wireless network.
What could be wrong with my iMac, or with iTunes on the iMac?
iMac Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have the same problem. I have two Airport Express units. The base is connected to the Cable/Modem for internet use. I have a Bose surround sound system also plugged into that Express unit. The other Express was used for extending the range for my old Titanium Laptop that recently bit the dust. (Waiting for Leopard before I leap;)
I was able to use iTunes music from my iMac by selecting the "speakers" I wanted. Either Express, I tried them both. I was quite successful in this remote streaming of my music library for a couple weeks. However, in the past 5 days I can not select the "speakers", they are no longer recognized by iTunes. I made sure the iTune preference to scan for wireless systems was checked. It was.
The next option was to try to reconfigure using the program Airport Admin Utility. The AAU does not even find either Express unit. I did a factory reset on "extra" Express unit and connected it by my Ethernet LAN. Then the Express is detected.
One would think that my iMac or Express did not function as a wireless system. However, I am sending this message from my iMac, through the base Express that is connected to the internet. That function thankfully does work.
Can it be a corrupted Airport Admin Utility? I tried to find a download on the Apple site to no avail. I tried to find it on my Tiger install CD's.
    Any ideas?

    James,
are you already on 3.0.1.00.07 or 3.0.1.00.08? Have a look at the release notes, it says something about a bug fix for some occurrences of ORA-02014.
Also have a look at the new substitution value/item FSP_DML_LOCK_ROW which turns locking off if you set it to FALSE. • Cannot select airplay speakers

I am trying to select a different AirPlay speaker in iTunes. When I click on the small icon in the right hand bottom corner of the iTunes window all my different AirPlay speakers do show. When I click on on of htem nothing happens and the "Computer" speaker stays selected. When I click on multiple speakers the window with the speaker selection shows and I can click on all the speakers but the click does not "stick". The Compute speaker stays as the selected speaker.
When I do the same thing from a different Mac it works nicely as expected. It is just my desktop - where I happen to have my whole library stored - where it does not work anymore. It has worked before and I do not know what happened.
Please help to restore this important feature.

I couldn't get mine to work so I went into Itunes Edit/preferences in "general" checked the items I wanted playing back ie films etc then in "sharing" I checked the music box and also clicked share selected libraries instead of entire library and also changed the preferred video version to 720p (it was set on 1080p), then in "store" I clicked download at 720p as mine is the 2G apple tv which operates at 720p (the latest is 1080p).  Then it all started to work so I don't know really what I did but it's now fine.  Best of luck

  • Since installing iTunes 8 Airtunes will not play remote speakers

After opening iTunes 8 for the first time last night I tried to play music as I have for past couple of years on AirTunes. Every time I try all I get is "An error occurred while trying to connect to remote speaker. An unknown error occurred (-3256)." Then when I try to access my network setting through System Preferences I get a never-ending drop-down window loop stating:" Your network settings have been changed by another application." As soon as I click the OK button the window slides up and immediately back down with the same frustrating statement so I can't even get at my settings. I'm the only one using this computer and the only recent apps have been iTunes 8 & the new Java downloads. I've restarted everything multiple times, have installed the firmware for Airport download that was recommended and the airtunes module comes on and seems to be functioning perfectly. Is this Apple's way of telliing me I have to upgrade to Leopard?
Although I've been an Apple user since my old Apple IIC back in the 80s, I have to use Windows based PCs & laptops at work & this problem is more like the Microsoft/Windows problems I've encountered than the Apple of the past.

I talked to Support about this problem. They got me to update both my Airport Extreme and my AirTunes unit. That fixed the problem after a reboot of the computer. To do this, go to app Airport Utility, Manual Update and proceed with both units until you see an Update button. If it's grey, you're already up to date; Black –> Push It!
They also sent me an article on this: <http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2278?viewlocale=en_US>

  • ITunes not seeing remote speakers on Airport Express

... but the Airport seems to be set up correctly. "Enable AirTunes" is checked in Airport Utility, and "Look for remote speakers..." is checked in iTunes. The wireless network (WPA2 encryption) is set up through a different Airport Express (we'll call it #1); the new one (#2) is only for streaming to the stereo (cable connection, modem, and Airport Express #1 are at the other end of the house, in the basement). I have a green light on #2, and it shows up fine in Airport Utility.
in the long term, I'm planning to use Airfoil to stream Grooveshark to the stereo - AX #2 shows up in Airfoil's speaker options, but Airfoil can't connect to it, just times out. I figured I'd resolve the issue in iTunes or with the network, then deal with Airfoil if it's still a problem (which I don't think it will be). I've searched the forum, but not found anything quite like this - most people seem to be having problems with iTunes losing a connection, or they at least have the drop-down menu to select remote speakers - I don't even have that. I've seen references to opening a port on the router; I have no idea what that means or how to do it. Any help is appreciated!
    thanks,
    Andrew

  • Lost contact with remote speakers after installing iTunes 10.6

I upgraded to iTunes 10.6, then noticed I now cannot access remote speakers connected to AirPort Express... directly from iTunes, from my iPhone, nor from my iPad.  Please Help.

    Hi Larry,
I had the same problem with iTune 10.6.5, and one cannot uninstall it. I was on the phone with Apple wireless support. The solution is to upgrae firmware on the Express, whihc cannot be doen with the latest airport utilities. HOwever, Apple re-posted Airport utility 5.6 for lion, which will then allow you to upgrade the firmware on older Aplle Express Units. This in turn will allow iTune 10.6 to communicate properly wit the Express. Doing so  restored my connection to the speakesr without any further issues.
    Give it a try...

  • Cannot get iTunes to recognize remote speakers via Airtunes

I have the option checked under iTunes preferences to look for remote speakers. The Airport Express device is "up and running" and glowing a continuous green which tells me it recognizes the wireless Belkin Pre-N router which is the central router for 2 windows laptops, a mac mini and this iBook. The mac mini is hard wired to the router; all others are wireless. A couple of items worth noting: Airport Express has worked previously on the iBook. Prior to running the Belkin Pre-N...I was running a Linksys 802.11b router. In addition, the motherboard on this iBook was replaced by Apple earlier in the summer. The iBook was returned with no problem and the hard drive remained intact. I tried to follow D.Lovell's link (hats off...by the way, nice job) but did not get very far.I hardwired the iBook to the Belkin Pre-N router and established an internet connection. I then tethered the Airport express to the router via ethernet cable and powered up Airport Express. Flashing yellow ensued....no green. Per Lovell's instructions, I opened Airport Admin Utility and nothing is recognized here. If I hit rescan or find other, another window pops up asking for IP address and password. Perhaps I am wrong here but I enter the IP address the router assigns to the IBook but I have no password to enter as Ive never associated a password with this router. This is as far as I can go in the process. Do I have an Apple issue? A Belkin issue? I feel as though I am close to solving this ....and its all the more frustrating that it worked previously...No firewall software runs in the background. Help????????

If when the Airport Express is cabled to one of the ethernet LAN ports on your Belkin wireless router, and the Airport Express doesn't within a short period of time show a solid green status light, then the next thing I would do is a factory default reset of the Airport Express per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
If the problem persists then one of the following has happened:
    - you have a defective Airport Express
    - you have a defective ethernet cable connecting the Airport Express to the Belkin router
    - the LAN port the Airport Express is cabled to on the Belkin router is defective

  • Airtunes - Remote speakers connected, not playing sound

Having major problems setting up two AE's (one old, one new) to work with Airtunes. System is as follows: new AE (n) connected to modem, transmitting wirelessly (no issues); old AE connected to new AE (as "join an existing network") and linked to stereo. I see the remote speakers listed in iTunes but when I select them and play music, nothing comes out of the stereo. Had a couple instances where there was sound for a second then it died. Green lights are on both AE's, internet is working just fine. I've read a lot of the forums already but none seem to get at this one issue (i.e., music is not just dropping out periodically.) I've tried everything out there that was suggested for somewhat similar issues, as well. No luck. Thoughts, anyone?

Did you try plugging in a pair of headphones into the problematic AirPort Express? If you hear sound, the problem is not with your iTunes or AirPort Express setup. More likely, you have defective audio cable from the Express to the stereo.

  • Airtunes remote speakers no longer work and a weird error

    Hi,
The other day after upgrading to iTunes 7.6 the ability for me to select my remote speakers in iTunes stopped functioning. The option has always worked for me before this, and yes, I have the "look for remote speakers" option checked in the iTunes preferences. Now, the little drop down to select speakers has vanished on my desktop.
The option still works with my laptop using iTunes 7.4. What gives?
Also, when I check or uncheck the box to tell iTunes to look for remote speakers on my desktop (iTunes 7.6) I get the following error:
"An error occurred while updating the default player for audio file types. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
I have seen other posts for both of these issues, but NO solutions. Uninstalling iTunes did not work. Rolling back to 7.5 did not work (and now 7.5 won't read my .itl file so my library is lost at the moment).
Anyone have any ideas? I can find many people asking the same questions, but no answers anywhere in my searches here and in Google.
    Thanks.

The fix for these problems was twofold.
First, uninstall iTunes, Quicktime, and Apple updater. Delete all folders in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data and C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local Settings\Application Data related to apple or itunes. Search through the registry for all keys and values related to iTunes.
Reinstall iTunes. That got rid of the error messages I was having.
To get the speakers to work again, I took my PC out of the DMZ on my router. Seems that if it's not behind the firewall/NAT, it won't pass the AirTunes traffic.

  • ITunes can't see airport express remote speakers using airtunes

Running Windows Vista, I have been through the process of joining the Airport Express as a client to an existing wireless network and have got a green light showing (hurrah). iTunes is not, however showing the option of selecting that AE to use as remote speakers.
I have checked that the 'look for remote speakers....' option has been selected in iTunes and have opened port 5353 UDP on the Windows firewall, and have tried turning the firewall off altogether, but still no joy.
As with other Vista users I can't see the AE using the Admin Utility, but I can get to it using 'Other' and the IP address that the DHCP server on my wireless router (Buffalo) has issued. On the music tab on the Base Station the 'Enable AirTunes on this base station' check box is connected.
So it seems that everything is good to go, just that iTunes doesn't display the base station as an option to select in iTunes - can anyone help? Thanks

    Oh. My. God.
Who knew that the "multiple speakers" window can be resized?
Quite by accident, I discovered my other two AE's "hiding" outside the window...
    Sheesh.

  • ITunes not connecting to AirTunes remote speakers after upgrade to 7.6.1

    Hi
I've just noticed that iTunes is refusing to connect to my AirPort Express. Or rather, it's ignoring me when I ask it to connect; it's as if I didn't select the remote speakers at all. It is displaying them in the remote speakers menu, and allowing me even to bring up the "multiple speakers" option, but won't respond to me selecting them). It's only started doing this since the update to 7.6.1.
The problem is not with the AirPort unit; my partner's MacBook running 10.5.2 and iTunes 7.6 will connect to it happily (thankfully she hasn't updated to 7.6.1 yet).
Any suggestions? Has anyone else experienced this? Or is this simply a bug I need to report to the good people at Apple?
    Thanks in advance.

Not working here either on v7.6.1.
Doesn't always find Airtunes speakers, works for a bit, then playback hangs at 0:00.
Quitting and restarting iTunes seems to get it (temporarily) working again.
Also, the iTunes volume control is broken - it plays at 100% volume regardless of volume setting and regardless of whether the "Disable iTunes volume control for remote speakers" option is checked.
All in all, a very poor release.
