Album Artwork revisited

Same old problem. How can you manually add a single image for the whole album (as iTunes does when downloading it from the iTMS) rather than simply embedding it in every track file?
AFAICT, the short answer is you can't, but I hope it will change.
However, I have found a partial solution.
When artwork cannot be downloaded from the iTMS or it is the incorrect image (a common problem), find the image you want to use (or make your own) and embed it (i.e. paste it into an artwork display box) into the FIRST track that is listed for that album (which may not be 1 if e.g. that is missing). Actually, it may work with ANY single track, I only tried it with the first track.
This artwork will now display as the artwork for the WHOLE album when you view the album in iTunes as CoverFlow, or the one that lists the tracks beside the artwork (middle option). The bottom left corner of the screen actually shows what is in the file however, so that will only show the image for the track into which you pasted it (unless it was an iTMS download, in which case it shows for all tracks, even though it is embedded in NONE of them).
So, for the most part, iTunes now has the capability to display the correct artwork for all tracks of any album for which it cannot be downloaded from iTMS, yet still only storing a single copy of that image and not wasting the space of duplicating the data in every track for that album.
So far, so good. It is worth noting also that the actual track mp3 files take on the icon of any embedded artwork, so those that are 'empty' will still show the generic MP3 icon. Unless of course you have been able to download the artwork from the iTMS, in which case the icons of all the tracks will be set to that image. Clever stuff since the actual image is stored entirely somewhere else.
Ok, so how does this work when syncing to the iPod and playing on an Apple TV?
Of course, correctly downloaded artwork from the iTMS shows up correctly all the time, for all tracks (for which the Album Artwork has been downloaded) and at first it looks like the alternative of simply adding an image to the first track has the same effect, but it's not all roses. But please remember, it's not the quality to which I am referring. It is WHERE the image data is stored - in a separate folder if it's downloaded from the iTMS, or embedded in the actual file if you added it manually.
On the Apple TV, select an artist and all the albums show their artwork, even those with it embedded in ONLY the one track. Play ANY track and the artwork displays as it should. You cannot tell the difference between Album Artwork downloaded from the iTMS and images you have pasted into a single track (maybe not the one you are playing).
On the iPod unfortunately it's a different story. Viewing the albums of any artist shows the correct artwork for each album, even those with it embedded in just the one track. The Beatles is a good test here since there's NO chance the artwork can have come from the iTMS. Play the first track of one of these albums and the artwork is displayed as it plays, jump to the next track and it's blank. Of course, my first tracks contained the embedded artwork so I guess the track that does display the artwork is the one that contains the image data.
The issue here is that the Apple TV is able to make the same association between tracks of the same album and hence display artwork embedded in a single track for ALL the tracks of that album as iTunes does. And it works as a good alternative when you cannot download Album Artwork from the iTMS. BUT, the iPOD fails to do this when you are playing the album. Do the programming teams not talk to each other?
So, embedding the artwork in a single track is currently a partial solution. Let's hope the iPod developers catch up, or even better if they provide the ability to manually add Album Artwork by the same method as if it were downloaded from the iTMS.
As always, if anyone knows how to manually add iTunes style Album Artwork, I'd be delighted to know.

Sorry if I wasn't entirely clear in my previous post. Storing the same artwork in EVERY file for the album, i.e. duplicating the same data multiple times, is simply not an acceptable solution. If you want to keep the music in sync with an iPod for example, it is important not to waste storage space. In fact it is my belief this is exactly why Apple devised their Album Artwork storage strategy.
One album should have ONE piece of artwork associated with it (or several if they're different), applicable to ALL tracks of that album. Anything else is dumb.

  • Wrong album artwork syncing to iPhone

on my Mac and from what I've seen on my iPad as well the right album artwork displays but on my iPhone it seems to like mix up the artwork on some songs, some downloaded from iTunes, some ripped from a CD, like I might have a song from Adele but on the iPod and also on the lock screen it will show maybe the artwork of Jack Johnson! I mean its not a big deal but does anyone know how to fix this?
    Thank you

It gives you the ability to use multiple computers to manually add your own music, i.e. music you have legitimately acquired, to your iPod. For example, I have 2 computers, I manually manage my music on my iPod Classic so I can hook it up to my MacBook Pro and put songs on that I don't have on my Mac Pro.
I also has a car that will go much faster than the speed limit. Just because it gives me that ability does not allow me to drive 120 mph on a local street.

  • Album artwork is in iTunes but it does not show up on my iPhone, how do I fix this?

I like to have all my albums have artwork so on my iTunes I made sure that they do. Everyone of my albums have artwork in iTunes but when i sync my iPhone none of them show up.

This same thing happened to me, so I plugged my iphone into the computer and I unchecked all the songs so it deleted from my phone and then i rechecked sync music back to the phone and all the album artwork were there.

  • ITunes keeps resetting and asking me if I want to download album artwork!

Hi, it seems as though every time I open iTunes these days the stupid window pops up asking if I want it to automatically download album artwork. I click "No, blah blah blah." And then iTunes opens. At the left is the "Download" option thing (in green under the "Store" section), when I click it, a window pops up saying "Would you like iTunes to check if you have any unfinished downloads?" or something like that. I say, again (and of course) "No."
The "Download" button subsequently goes away and that is all that happens. But it happens repeatedly, every time I open the program! Obviously these settings are not saving--and it seems to be even more of a fundamental problem than that, perhaps some file is corrupted somewhere.
    Any thoughts?

Same here. And it doesn't seem to matter which way
you answer the question, it just keeps asking.

  • How Can I sync iTunes album artwork with album folders on my Mac

    Small Issue,
I just got a new macbook pro and uploaded copied the iTunes music folder from my PC, to an external hard drive then to the "music" folder in the Finder on my Mac.  I then went into iTunes and added my library via the "add music" link (or something like that)
All the music upload and most of the album artwork was missing.  I clicked "Get Album Artwork" and it replaced most of the album artwork
Here is the issue I need help with...
Some of the albums, which have album artwork inside iTunes, do not have album artwork if I go to the album folder in the finder.  Is there anyway to get this artwork to sync up with the folder?
I ask because, I am kinda anal and like the artwork to show up if I play a song from the spotlight (I like playing music that way)
Am I going to have to manually add the album artwork into the finder folders?

  • My album artwork does not match the song in my playlists

After making playlists with music purchased from itunes in my music app, the art work does not match the title of the song / album. How can I fix this problem?

    Hi freezerman84,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with Album Artwork on your iPhone 5. To troubleshoot this issue, it may be best to completely resync your iPhone with iTunes. To do so, uncheck the "Sync Music" checkbox, and apply the changes (so there is ultimately no music syncing to your iPhone).
Once you have done that, recheck the "Sync Music" checkbox, and apply the changes. This will instruct iTunes to completely remove all music from your iPhone, and then copy the files once more. If you have a large amount of music, this initial sync may take a while.
If the above does not resolve your issue, it may be necessary to restore your iPhone:

  • Album artwork.... just can't get it to work right.

    Hello.
I've searched google, I've searched this support community and I've just not been able to come up with an answer.
My album artwork just won't stay put. Some of my albums have artwork and some don't. I've done the "right click" and "get album art work". I've downloaded an app to find art work for the drag and drop method into the "Now Playing" window but it just gets eaten by Itunes (it appears in the window and magically disappears). I've even done the "get info" on multiple tracks and drag and drop into the "artwork"  window of the info pane and while it sticks and stays put nothing happens when I press ok only to reopen the info pane ( "get info" on multiple tracks) and it's as if I've done absolutely nothing. My permissions are fine. My music files are a mixed bunch of MP3 and WAV but this isn't a factor as some MP3's have artwork and some don't, as well as my WAV's.
I've searched in and out, high and low but I've just not come up with anything that gets this in order. The problem isn't getting the artwork it's getting Itunes (10.5.1) to attach it to the albums and display it. My Mac OS X is Lion 10.7.2. Can anyone help?
    Thanking you before hand.

Looks like it does have something to do with WAV format. I got the missing artwork on the MP3's working (by simply dragging and dropping...don't know how that didn't work before) but it's true that the WAV format does not support artwork (as stated several time here in this support community). What threw a brick in all my thinking is that some of my WAV's do have artwork. After some searching though I deduced that the WAV's with artwork showing are albums you can obtain from the itunes store while those that you can't don't show. Even some of the albums that I I copied in WAV that you can obtain from the Itunes store but have minor differences don't show artwork (eg. itunes sells the extended track album while i have the original length album)
I find this rather silly to be honest since there is a work around. I guess the question now is, where is itunes storing the artwork for the WAV files that do show artwork and can I tap into that so it does show for those WAV's missing the artwork?

  • Can't manually add album artwork through iTunes 10.5 on an iPhone 4s

Ok, heres the deal - (and this is a weird one)
I have iTunes 10.5, windows xp and a new iPhone 4s. I am missing multiple album covers so I just find high-res ones on google and save them in preparation of manually adding them to the album via iTunes. The way I do this (and have always done this) is by highlighting the whole album, right clicking and going to 'get info'. Then I go the bottom right corner where it says "Artwork" and double click to open the folder of all my highres album covers. I then choose the correct album and click on 'open'. The artwork box stays BLANK no matter how many times I choose a cover and open it. So then I wait for it to sync the non-cover to the iphone...which doesnt work because its not syncing anything but it thinks it is. I then have to DO THE PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN to make it work. Generally it finally takes the album cover after the 2nd time. Generally.
Now heres the thing, sometimes it just hangs up on the title at the top of the screen, the status bar. It just says "Updating Files On 'Derek's iPhone' ("preparing to update" is the sub text) with the little candycane status bar running across. It may do this and hang for a good 3 minutes EACH TIME!
So I have to go through multiple albums, one by one, manually syncing album covers 2 times in a row since it never works the first time and hope that it doesnt hang too long and just time out, which it has done multiple times before. If it doesnt work the first 2 times, then I'll try 3 or 4 times but then it will just time out, not saying any error or anything but it just wont transfer the album artwork. I'll look at my phone and the cover is still blank!
The only way around this, that I've found, is quit iTunes and unplug the phone and start the whole process over again for EVERY. ALBUM. and btw, I have about 40 albums to do this to.
So all this music came from cd's a while ago, I just dont want to pay for the iTunes version JUST to get the album cover since I already have the music.
At this rate, it would take me a few months of non-stop syncing to finish.
And on top of THAT, a few weeks back I made some serious headway on this and almost got finished to the "S" albums (listed alphabetically), checked my phone, all the covers were there. Then about a week later, plugged my phone back in and noticed that AAAALLLL the work I did in the past was GONE! I had to start over from the "G" albums. And thats where I'm at now...
    Please help
P.S. - Of course I've already tried "get album artwork"..duh, it doesnt work. It doesnt get the right covers or horrible versions or low res or MOST times, it just says it can't find any

I am currently having the same problem. I have an ipod touch and yesterday I finally updated to 10.5. For starters, after the update, all of the songs were gone, so I manually had to re-add them. I have about 5 CD albums on my PC that I ripepd and then added to my ipod, and about 3/5 I never had album cover issues with. But upon plugging in my ipod again today, the album covers were gone for ALL of the CDs. On top of that, when I manually change the "info" on some songs, it is updated on itunes, but not on my Ipod!

  • I just downloaded the new version of iTunes, but I haven't been able to put new album artwork on my albums. Every time I try, the picture I put doesn't show up. Please help!

Usually, when I put album artwork, I go to get info for the whole album and copy and paste an image I get off the Internet. But every time I do this, all that shows up is the color black! I have no idea what to do. Please help.

It's a bug with iTunes 10.4.0.80. If you copy and paste from some web browsers or an image editor then iTunes pastes in a transparent image of the same dimensions. This shows up black in the artwork panel at the bottom left or white in the get info art viewer.
If you work with an image file stored on your computer you will get better results. Use the artwork box on the Info tab of the Get Info. dialog for multiple tracks to replace all existing images. With a single track you will need to delete the existing corrupt images from the Artwork tab first.

  • ITunes can't get album artwork for songs iTunes has in the store... how do i fix this?

i have a bunch of songs that either have the wrong album artwork or none at all.  the weirdest thing is that some of the albums are SOLD on iTunes. in fact, if i highlight one of my songs in iTunes, Ping sees it and shows me the correct cover art. BUT when i click "get album artwork", it tells me it cannot find the artwork. i've tried matching the text (song title, album title, artist, genre) exactly as it is in iTunes, but that doesn't help. it is doing this for about 60 of my albums and i don't know how to fix it. how can i get it to find the artwork?
also... when iTunes finds the WRONG artwork, how can i direct it to the correct one?

Albums, artists and complications must match precisely for iTunes to get a hit.  If you have a compilation, chances are you have a 'various artists' for an album artists ... there is a bit of a science to it.  I've managed to get most of my 'picky ones' to match.  But I have some that just won't - for whatever reason.

  • Album artwork disappeared after an iTunes error... how can I get I back?

I've been using iTunes for years and out of a clear blue sky I get this error message, "iPhone cannot be synced because the sync session failed to start." After trying a few different things I find a fix that works- turn my iPhone all the way off and then turn it back on. Then when I added a new mp3 song to my iTunes Library and tried to sync it to my phone, the album artwork refused to show up on my phone even though it shows in iTunes. Nothing I did to fix it worked. I tried to add another mp3 song. Same problem. Then as I tried the various 'fixes' I read about here in Apple Support Communities, it made my problem worse! At first only the two new mp3 songs I added were missing album artwork. Now half of the songs I purchased from iTunes are missing album artwork! To add to that, many of the songs that have album artwork at all have the wrong artwork.
    Stuff that didn't work:
Erasing all the music on my phone and resyncing made it worse
My manually added album artwork is already ID3 tagged v2.4
I have never checked the box that converts higher bitrate songs
Manually adding artwork and using iTunes' "get album artwork" feature
    Restoring iPhone from a backup
I am using a MacBook Pro with OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.8.
I have iOS 6.1.4 on my iPhone 5 and I have not updated anything for the past two months.
    PLEASE HELP.

  • "itunes has stopped working" after downloading album artwork??

For years I've avoided ipod and itunes like the plague...but about 2 weeks ago I gave in. I got an ipod touch and installed itunes. Everything was fine - until this afternoon when I clicked on find album artwork in itunes. After itunes finished going through the process of finding the artwork ( 1400 of 1600 files found, 1450 of 1600 found, etc...or something like that ), i got the error message that *itunes has stopped working*. I've been searching forums all night and tried uninstalling eveything "apple" and reinstalling. Apparently this error comes up for A LOT of people ( problems like this are why I never wanted an ipod... ). None of the recommended fixes are working. I'm assuming something went wrong during artwork downloading????? Or not? I don't really care why actually, but, if itunes crashes every time i hook up my ipod, what good is it ( or the ipod )...and i don't know what to do with the ipod ( how to download apps, or add music, photos and videos ) w/o the itunes. My previous media players were all drag and drop ease.
I'm a newbie - and i'm rally frustrated - so please be kind. Can anyone tell me - in plain terms - how to get my itunes to not "stop working" every time i hook up my ipod?? Please?
    THANKS.

OK, so after looking everywhere for an answer - with no luck - I figured it out on my own ( don't ask me how... ). I'll tell you what I did. I bet you have the same problem. Honestly, I thought I'd be returning the **** thing, but it's fine now.
I'd plug in my ipod ( 32gtouch, like yours ), and itunes would open. Everything was fine until it started to sync my music. Then it would freeze, give me the error message, and then shut down. I did this probably 10 times throughout the day, and always the same. Then I noticed it always froze at the same place during the sync. Soooo, I finally realized I must have a corrupt file.
Step 1: Do as I did, but when it starts to freeze, take note of the name of the song it freezes on. That's probably the culprit .Remember it. Let the error message come up and close as always...
Step 2: Open itunes again! Click on your ipod, and then on the music tab. Immediately un-check "Sync music" ( top of the page ) and then click "apply" ( bottom right ). DO THAT FAST...before it has a chance to sync, or it will just freeze again!
Step 3: Go into your music library on itunes, and DLETE/REMOVE that song.
    Step 4: Close itunes.
Step 5: Open itunes, and go again to your ipod, and click on music tab. This time, check the "sync music" box ( and apply ).
That should fix it. If it doesn't you have more than one corrupt file. In that case, close itunes and then open it again. Follow step 1 and 2 again. Remove any songs from your library that aren't that important to you ( especially those that were from questionable sources... ). Basically, you need to figure out which song ( or songs ) are causing the problem. If you just delete them all, you'd have to add them again one at a time to avoid the problem again, and that would be a pain. So, just remove as many as you feel like ( out of 1500 songs or so, I removed a couple hundred ). I left mainly the ones that were from my actual CDs or that I had bought through Amazon ( or other legit source ). I removed most of my Limewire downloads. Most of them are probably fine, but I'll add them later one at a time to be sure...
I still have plenty of Limewire songs on there, and they are fine, but, as you know, you do get bad files sometimes.
Anyways, once I did this, everything is fine and works great. I even started adding album art manually, and at one point it froze again. So, I did steps 1 and 2 again, and removed the album art I last added, and then synced again, and it was fine. Usually, the album art I add is OK, but I had that one pesky photo I guess ). So, I guess the thing is after you get the majority of your music on, just add and adjust things a little at a time, and you'll always know which file is causing you problems ( hopefully no files will!! ).
I hope this works for you. Let me know if you have any questions, and let me know if it solves your issue too!
    Peace.

  • How can I manually transfer album artwork from my library to my iPod

I downloaded album artwork to the songs in my library, and now I want to get the artwork onto the songs on my iPod classic. Problem is, I manually manage the songs on my ipod, instead of auto-syncing.... so when I hit the "sync" button in the latest version of iTunes (11.1.1.11), nothing happens. There also isn't a "show album artwork on iPod" button anymore. I'm afraid to change my settings from manual to automatic syncing, because I have lots of playlists on my iPod that aren't in my library, and I don't know if these playlists will be removed during the auto-sync. So how can I manually get the album artwork onto my iPod?
    Thanks,
    Rob

You can only backup iOS devices.
Sadly the old trick of removing all artwork and then adding it all back again no longer works. You may get some joy if you removed the specific album, then add it back again, butgenerally once things go wrong with artwork on a classic the only option is to restore it. Not a problem if all the media is in your library and you sync with a small number of selected playlists. If you don't have all the media see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • Album artwork imports into iTunes, but artist tags do not

    Hello,
After importing my music from an external hard drive backup, I have a problem with ~5% of my music. The songs are listed in iTunes as "Unknown Artist" and "Unknown Album". However, if I find the file within my iTunes folder, all of the artist information tags are listed if I use "Get Info" --> "More Info" in the Finder. Back in iTunes, the album artwork is there, but the tags are missing. These are for .m4a, Apple MPEG-4 audio files. How can I get iTunes to recognize the tags that are obviousy still present in the file?
There are too many songs like this to relabel the, realistically.
I have tried deleting the songs from my library and re-importing them into iTunes, but this does not fix the problem. I cannot find any logic as to which songs this affects.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

This same thing happened to me, so I plugged my iphone into the computer and I unchecked all the songs so it deleted from my phone and then i rechecked sync music back to the phone and all the album artwork were there.

  • Sharing album artwork with fast user switching and soft links

We have 4 users, 4 iPods, 4 sets of playlists. Each has their own account. All the music lives on an external drive and each iTunes is set to store its music in the same shared folder. That all works fine.
Now we're getting into album artwork, and I want to share that too. I found a posting somewhere that suggested a soft link from /Users/Me/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork -> /Volumes/BigDrive/iTunes Artwork. I did that with one user and it worked fine - copied Album Artwork folder and set soft link and voila, all the art. I also set all permissions to allow r/w from everyone.
But when I set the soft link from 2nd user, iTunes shows no art. I can browse all the art files fine from that users Finder.

And just like that I may have found the solution! IT suddenly occured to me that one of the settings that got changed when we imported my wife's profile was a change to the sleep settings. Previously, I had had my iMac set to never go to sleep, since it shares our media with the rest of the house and runs eyeTV to record TV shows and such. For a little while after my wife's account was imported the settings to changes so that the computer would go to sleep after 15 minutes. I'm not totally sure why, but I think having that set up somehow meant that when we switched accounts my other account just "went to sleep" and therefore stopped sharing the iTunes library. After I noticed the change and switched the computer back to "never" for sleep the problem seems to have stopped.
So perhaps check your sleep settings? That seems to be the only change I can think of that got things working correclty for me. I'll keep digging though and see if I can find any more helpful info. Good luck!
