All Desktops go to primary monitor after restart

I'm seeing interesting behavior where all of my desktops end up on the primary monitor after restart. Kind of annoying.
10.10
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)

Turning Automatic Login OFF seems to have solved it for me.
1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, then click Login Options.
2. If the options are dimmed, click the lock icon to unlock it, then type an administrator name and password.
3. Choose Off from the “Automatic login” pop-up menu.

  • Windows (7/8/8.1) moves everything to primary monitor after they are powered off.

When using multiple monitors Windows moves all open windows and apps to the primary monitor after they have either gone to sleep or been powered off. I have been looking for 2 months now trying to find a solution. My current setup is running Windows 8.1
with an AMD Radeon R9 285X and the drivers are current. However I just switched from Windows 7 a month ago, and I changed from an NVidia card 3 months ago, all with the same result.
This is getting ridiculous Microsoft. This issue has been reported since 2009 and I have not seen a proper fix yet.  Please don't bother telling me to update the drivers, I've done that, with both cards and in both OSs. The only solutions I've read
about involve using questionable hardware measures in order to fix a "feature" Microsoft is imposing on people. With more and more industries moving to multiple monitor setups this seems like a poor decision on Microsoft's part. Somehow, forcing
people to leave their monitors on constantly in order to make them work properly seems a violation of energy star compliance.
The following are just some of the threads that relate to this topic in one way or another, all run my Microsoft and none with a proper fix, only MS saying its a feature, or update the drivers, or some other none helpful answer.

    Hi,
As mentioned in this link (and this has been already mentioned in the link posted above)
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Understanding-multiple-monitors
When you disconnect the additional monitor, the original display settings are restored to your primary display. In addition, all open files and program windows are moved to the primary display. The next time  that you connect the same monitor, Windows
automatically applies the display settings that you used the last time that you connected this monitor. (same in OS Windows 7\8\8.1)
According to your description, the monitor is automatically disconnected when it has either gone to sleep or been powered off that causes the annoying issue, If possible, I suggest you check whether there's a "source detection settings"
(or something like this) for the monitor,  set the monitor always active as a alternative solution.

  • Bridge does not tile thumbnails accross two monitors after restart

After restarting my computer Bridge suddenly quit tiling the images being displayed and only shows one row on the primary content panel.
The only alteration to my system prior to restart was installing DivX. System was restarted after bridge refused to open, and Task Manager did not give any indication of Adobe products running.
Am I missing some obvious setting, and if so do you know why it reset after a restart when it's worked repeatedly for months. I've tried restarting multiple times, I've reset the workspace, and each time I then expand the window accross the two monitors it automatically removes the grid resizes to largest size and maintains the single row even as I adjust for smaller thumbnails.
    Windows 7
    CS6

on one monitor it works as it did before, just not with the second monitor, which it did before.
Did you besides resetting the workspace also try to reset Bridge prefs by restarting Bridge holding down cntrl key and choose reset prefs?
This is the first thing to try whenever bridge start acting other then before all of a sudden.
There can be many things disturbing applications and Bridge is a critical app in this one.

  • Sos-desktop files deleted/system affected after restart

    hello
A very strange "system failure" happend today.
I explain the way things happened:
    1.firefox not responding
    2.firefox restart
3.looked like firefox upgraded itself(not sure)
4.lost all bookmarks from the browser
    5.decided to restart the powerbook
    6.all system prefernces settings lost
7.MOST IMPORTANT-the system affected and all desktop files were deleted (or gone somewhere I still don't know).
note> I have tried the "bookmark recovery" for firefox. didn't work.
the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?
Last thought was to run a file recovery soft. but I don't have any installed, any suggestions?
    Please, any insights are appreciated
    thanx in advance

    HI,
*"the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?"*
You need to boot from your install disk and check the hard disk using Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Did you repair the disk with DiskWarrior as mentioned here?

    Did you repair disk then?

  • All desktops and icons/wallpaper disappear after updating

My main desktop icons/wallpaper dissappear when I swipe to a different desktop/fullscreen App like Mail or iCal.  Mission control shows nothing but a blank desktop.  If you blindly click around I can find my documets/folders on the desktop.  You can even create a new folder but it dissapers too.  It appears to be covered by a dark grey desktop that is hiding everything.  This happened right after I updated today.

Sorry, missed the part about updating to lion.
Mine is doing this but not from an update.
I was dragging photos to a file and must have let go of them without realizing it.  {BTW, didn't mean to do this}  Window said it was copying, from finder and I'm assuming it meant to the desktop.  My computer copied some but not all. I relaunched finder and everything on my desktop disappeared.  When tapping on the screen/desktop, hard-drive and files will reappear.   When pulling files/hard-drive from my computer and placing on desktop, they will disappear when the original file pops up.   When computer is shut down and restarted, I go through the same thing.  I ran disk repair and the test from the install disk and nothing is wrong.
So, what do I do to correct this and keep my hard-drive/files on my desktop?

  • Setting up desktop background from iphoto resets after restarting my Mac OS..

    Hello,
I have the Mac Os X 10.7.3 version on 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. I use Iphoto '11 version 9.2.3. My iphoto library shared on /Users/Shared/Ress.sparseimage and it's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Two users are using same library and we have no problem while sharing this library.
The only problem occurs when I tried to set up the desktop background from iphoto. When I change the background from iphoto application and restart my computer, the desktop background resets to Andromeda Galaxy.
The reason it resets the background to Galaxy because the volume that contains shared library starts slower. I know this for sure because when I check the Devices section from Finder as soon as the computer starts I can’t see my shared volume on Devices and it takes up 5 or 10 seconds to appear in there.
In my opinion, somehow late launch for this shared volume changes the background’s path to /Library/Desktop Pictures and the first picture in there Andromeda Galaxy.jpg.
We can fix this problem by copying the picture to the path /Library/Desktop Pictures. But unfortunately this solution is very basic and will not satisfy me because I don’t want to copy my pictures from one path to another every time I want to change the background. That’s very frustrating.
I would like change my background from iphoto application. In fact when I use iphoto without sharing and setup the background from iphoto application, I don’t face this problem. This problem only occurs when I share my iphoto library on a volume as a sparseimage.
    Best Regards,
    HB

Just grab a bunch of photo's you want and place them into a new folder in your User/Pictures named desktop pics or something.
Then you can drag and drop copy certain ones from the shared iPhoto Library.
I keep my desktop and iPhoto Libraries seperate, iPhoto is personal and desktop pictures are just that. No need to waste space in iPhoto as I have over 680 desktop pictures and about 8000 iPhoto pictures, so I don't want to overload iPhoto anymore that it is already.
Once you get large enough desktop pictures the matter becomes mute, just rotate them every 30 or so minutes and it toss in a few new ones from iPhoto when you wish.
If you didn't know, you can point the system preferences > desktop pictures at a new folder in your Pictures folder,  there is no need to use the iPhoto Library or drop them into /Library/Desktop Pictures, this is rather risky to be messing inside that folder, in fact in 10.7 Apple has made it invisible to stop people from messing around in there.
Just click the little "+" sign to add a new folder in System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver preferences.

  • Restoring all running programs and opened windows after restart.

Is it possible to automatically restore upon logging in all applications, opened windows and documents running before a reboot of Leopard? It's rather convenient, especially when I have to reboot after an update of the system while working on a dozen of windows. Currently I have to relaunch them all one by one. It is a default feature of KDE, BTW.

    even tho it's so there
This is a bit too close to a message I'm familiar with that can indicate a hijack on the PC. So just in case I think we'd better try a malware scan.
Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hours on my Lenovo.)
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Does the scan find any infections? If so, please paste the contents of the log file for the scan in a reply here so we can have a look.

  • Photos blurry after restart?

I just bought my iPad and all of the photos are blurry after restart, including the ones I downloaded and took myself.
Also when I tap Edit, it returns to home screen.
    Can anyone help?

    Try a Reset...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.
If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

  • Indesign dissapears after restart

    Hello.
After i tried the CS6 beta all my Adobe programs are dissapearing after restart. Registry stays but they dissapear from start menu and wont open up afterwards.
Most of the errors are either : "Please uninstall and reinstall the product " Error: 1
Or that the specific file does not exist.
I have reinstalled it thousands of times already after every restart . I have been keeping my computer in sleep for weeks just not to reinstall it again.
This problem began after CS6 beta didnt want to uninstall itself and i used something  called the "Perfect uninstaller" i did not know that adobe had creative suite uninstaller thing then.
All the other programs are fine after restart but the CS ones are dissapearing from start menu and refuse to start up from their program direction.
I can evade Error 1 with administrator mode (after restart) but i cannot have the drag drop function. Which is crutial to my workflow.
    PC Specs:
    Windows 7 home premium
    Asus Notebook N73SV
    Intel Core I7-2670QM
    Ram 8gb
    Nvidia Geforce GT540M

And in future, NEVER run beta software on a mission critical machine. You need to be prepared to completely rebuild any machine that you use for testing, and one really good method is to make a disk image of some known good state that you can restore if necessary so you don't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling the the OS and all the apps, but it's still a pain.
You might, if the cleaner tool fails, try using Windows System Restore to go back to a point before you installed the beta software, but the odds of that working after everything else are probably not better than 50-50.

  • Assign To "All Desktops" doesn't work after restart

Is anyone else having this problem?
I have several apps that I have assigned to show on "All Desktops"; however, after I do a restart, and these apps are magically restored, though they still claim to be assigned to "All Desktops" they only appear on the first desktop.
I have to then assign them to "This Desktop" and back again to "All Desktops" before they will actually display on all desktops.
Though I seldom restart, it is annoying to have to go through the apps and re-set their display settings each time.
I don't know if it is possibly part of the problem, but all the apps I have set to "All Desktops" I display on my second monitor (I do this so I can have things like Safari on my second monitor, and always available, no matter what I am working in on my main display).

This thread offers a solution, but it's vague and too broad: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16190593#16190593
I don't want to delete all my preferences and have to set them up again. So I did some research and I think I figured out a more targeted solution. The preferences file for Spaces in Lion is located here: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.spaces.plist
For some reason, ~/Library is hidden by default in Lion, so to get there you'll have to unhide it. Enter this command in Terminal: chflags nohidden ~/Library
Then, to open and edit that file, you'll need to download the XCode tools, here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xcode/id448457090?mt=12
Finally, you'll want to open spaces.plist, find the line that refers to the application you're having trouble with, e.g.:
            "com.apple.finder" = "3C65046B-FA18-4983-9219-8140A2B81A41";
Change that long string of letters to "AllSpaces". Save the file and restart and (I hope) that should do it. Will report back when I've tried this. Still waiting for the rather large XCode application to download from the App Store.

  • "All Desktops" not staying after reboot

I have a few applications which I've set to show on all my desktops (iCal, 1Password, Communicator).
What I have noticed is that after reboot (with restore windows checked) that sometimes those applications do not show up anymore on all my desktops. If I check the setting I can see the option is still checked however. To "resolve" it I need to switch it to say "This Desktop" and then back to "All Desktops".
I'm working with 3 displays: external display (VGA through Thunderbolt) which is the primary, my laptop screen is a secondary monitor and I also have a USB display through DisplayLink as a third monitor. I always put these applications on my secondary monitor (laptop screen).
Anyone else seen this issue? It might be an issue with this in combination with multiple displays.
    Thanks.

I can confirm that this behavior is not caused by multiple displays; as I have the same problem using only one monitor.
I consistenly set my Terminal.app settings to show on all desktops, but once the system is rebooted it reverts to displaying on Desktop 1. One has to change it from ‘‘This Desktop’’ to ‘‘All Desktops’’ to get the functionality back.
This is a bug that should be easy for Apple to fix. It would also be nice to have all open applications in a session remember which desktop it was associated with previously, as I have a number of things open which I arrange into different desktops (‘‘spaces’’)--as I'm sure many other users of OS X do as well.

  • Why do I lose my desktop picture on external (2nd) monitor after going to sleep?

Sometimes, (not always) my 2nd monitor will not have a background picture - only gray - after waking up from sleep mode. Even going to System Prefs and selecting different picture, it will only stay gray. All other items that I drag to it or that were there when it went to sleep are fine, just the background picture is the problem. After restart, everything is OK.

  • Desktop picture selections disappear after restart

I set up 12 different desktops using two different monitors, six spaces on one, six on the other. I select different pictures to use on each one, when I restart, the pictures revert back to Yosemite default. Also the desktops assigned  to the smaller screen also all go back to the larger screen.
I'm not sure what the issue is, never had this problem on any other Apple OS, any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I wrote a little script for the problem of Desktop backgrounds here that should solve the problem and make it easier for you to change all backgrounds simultaneously (rather than individually) if you want. Have a look here:

I use 2 monitors, one in hdmi and the 2 in MDP. After upgrade OS, the 2 monitor is the primary, and i can´t choose wich is the primary monitor and the dock dont display on all monitor, like the announced.
Someone know how can i fix this?
That was the worst OS X update I've ever seen...

First of all, IMHO, you do not need A/V software on a Mac running OS X. Most of that stuff will cause problems. There are NO documented viruses that affect a Mac running OS X. There is an occasional malware report, but that usually is a result of visiting odd sites.
Use the MacAfee uninstaller and forget Avast. If you mean the MacAfee icon on the dock, just drag it off.
