All files on Boot Camp partition mysteriously erased after 10.5.3 update

My wife's MBP 2.4 was running 10.5.2 with a Boot Camp installation of Windows XP. The other night she upgraded to 10.5.3 and everything on her Boot Camp partition was erased somehow.
She spent most of the day working in Windows. During the day someone gave her a usb key with some photos on it that when she plugged it in to her computer something came up in Turkish (she is presently in Turkey) that her friend said she should just close the window and she did. She shut down and switched over to the 10.5.2 install, repaired permissions, and then ran software update to go to 10.5.3. I believe her Boot Camp is updated to the most recent version on the PC side. After the update completed she went to go back into Windows and could not start up in it. It turned out somehow everything on the Boot Camp partition was gone. The partition name was the same as it had been previously and it shouls as all of the space available. None of the material was in the Trash on the Mac side and she had quite a build up in the Trash folder - so it wasn't put in the Trash and then the Trash emptied. It was as if someone had reformatted the partition.
I would chalk this up to user error when she was in disk utility maybe or someone in her studio screwing around with her computer but the same thing apparently happened to one of her classmates shortly before leaving for Turkey. Anyone heard of this happening or have any thoughts?
I had her saving all data to the Mac partition so luckily no data was lost - we just need to reinstall the programs to the Windows partition.

Nope, that didn't happen. The mbp has been loaded directly with Leopard since release day, and had few problems. I've done all the updates from 10.5.0 without any issues. But it was definitely something in the 10.5.3 update that hosed my video (or just a really, really strange coincidence and/or bad timing).
It's not just an OS driver, either. This is lower level than that, because I get NO video from a complete startup. There's no grey screen with the apple logo-- it stays completely blank. This almost surely means that the low-level firmware got corrupted or flashed incorrectly. The fact that the OS detects it as something completely different (Intel GMA X3100) supports this idea.
Thinking back, I did do the update with my laptop screen closed and using a 20" Apple Cinema Display, which is how I use the laptop 90% of the time. And in each of the previous updates, I'm certain they were installed similarly. I mention this, because someone else mentioned having the same issue as me, and noted that the update was done with an external display. Perhaps the firmware update is bugged so that if it doesn't detect the native display, it gets hosed...
I saw some other suggestions in another thread that sounded interesting. For instance, you can create a self booting CD on another Mac that reflashes the EFI (low level bios) to a factory setting. This could potentially fix it, and I would be willing to try it, if I still had my laptop.
In the future, just because things like this make me paranoid, I'll probably reboot the mbp and use only the native display before I do any updates...

Following your instructions in this thread (Bootcamp disk0s4 gone after Yosemite update) the bootcamp partition finally appeared in finder and disk utility.

Boot Camp cant be recognised after Mac OS Yosemite update, Please Help?

I've updated my Macbook Pro 13" OS software and apparently has crashed my boot camp partition.
Specs:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
I've looked at the terminal process by using certain codes etc, but i dont really understand it fully so if anyone has a similar problem or knows how to fix it please help, I have a lot of important information.

Can't see Windows 7 Boot Camp partition from Mac

I've had a Win7 boot partition on my 2011 MBP for a while and it boots just fine. I have a Mac boot partition, a Mac data partition, and a NTFS Win 7 partition. But the Boot Camp partition is greyed out and invisible when booted in to the Mac.
When in Windows, I can see and use the Mac partition from Win7 with MacDrive. The problem is that I cannot see the Windows partition from the Mac. I have Paragon NTFS for Mac installed as well as MacFuse. I tried to see the partition with CampTune and got this error:
I also tried going to the BootCamp Assistant and saw this:
Yet when booted in Windows, I see the Mac partition just fine.

Does anyone know if I can repair this without having to re-format? I have a 13" White MacBook as well and this setup works just fine. I did it such a long time ago that I forgot how I did the first one.
There is another thread on here that similar but not quite like my problem because I ca actually boo into Windows.

Install a Boot Camp partition without access to OSX files.

I Want to use a boot camp partition so that windows can use all my ram (windows 10 is really slow running alongside Yosemite in virtualbox). Is there software that I can install or something special I can do to install windows in a way that it won't be able to access the files on the Mac side? I don't want the security risks of windows getting through to the Mac bit. So, is there something that can out up a barrier between the two?

The choice to install Windows is an invitation to security risks. It does not mean OS X does not have its own security risks. All OSes do. Windows has more widespread malware, viruses, etc. Windows has read-only access via Apple HFS+ driver to OS X volumes (this is installed as part of Bootcamp Drivers package).
You have two choices,
1. Install FileVault2 - OS X: About FileVault 2 - Apple Support.
2. Convert your HFS+ volumes to CoreStorage. See the help about diskutil cs convert. Please also see https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/diskutil.8.html

Convert a regular JHFS+ partition into a CoreStorage logical volume.
The file system must be mounted and resizable (i.e. Journaled HFS+).

Either method removes read-only access to OS X side.

Can't install windows it says the boot camp partition is not formatted as a NTFS file structure

Using boot camp assistant it gets to the point of installing windows 7 and it won't because the boot camp partition is not a NTFS file structure. It also seems strange to me that there are 5 partitions would have expect ether 2 or 3. Please help this is very frustrating.

Open, if not so already, the Windows formatter. Identify the BC Windows partition. It will be the one listed with the proper size you created and/or will be labeled as a C: drive. Be careful you select the right one or you may be corrupting the entire drive.
Format the partition as NTFS.

Help-Erasing a Boot Camp Partition Caused 32 GB of Disk Space to Vanish

I'm a new mac user I'd I have been really happy so far, expect for this problem:
-I created a 32 gb partition with boot camp.
-I tried installing windows xp without knowing I had to format the system to NTFS during the install
The installation didnt work, and I erased the bootcamp partition.
-When I tried to create a new boot camp partition, it said my Mac HD size hard drive is 227 gb, ie the *32 gb allocated to the partition had vanished*. In addition, I could not recreate a partition because of an error message.
-I ran the snow leopard CD's disk utility and thought that I had fixed the problem.
-However in boot camp, the mac drive is still only 227 gb (missing 32 gb). I can create partitions now, and deleting these partitions does cause any additional loss of disk space.
-I tried erasing empty disk space with no luck.
Does anyone know how to recover space lost by Boot Camp?

Let me ask a simple question. What size HD do you have in your Mac? You say you see 227 GB and that 32GB is "missing". If I add those two numbers up I com up with 259 GB. I suspect that your "missing" space is due to the inconsistencies in which Snow Leopard now reports 1 GB. In some places it reports 1 GB as a hard disk manufacturer (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes). In other places it reports 1 GB as a binary number (1 GB = 2^^30 [IIRC] = 1,073,741,824 Bytes). Since I do not know of any drive manufacturer that sells a 259 GB drive, I suspect that this is just due to the differing definitions of 1 GB.

Please don't double post. Look at your other thread.
If you want to get rid of Windows and the BC partition use the Boot Camp assistant program to remove the Win/BC partition. Don't do it manually with Disk Utility Use the BC A program.

Boot Camp partition won't mount in Disk Utility all of a sudden

I used to have a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition set-up and working perfectly.
Turned on my 2009 Mac Mini today and couldn't see it in the Finder. Opened Disk Utility, it was there, but grayed out. Right clicked and selected "Mount BOOTCAMP", got "mount failed"
Tried verifying and repairing disk, but no joy. So I removed the boot camp partition using Boot Camp Assistant and started again. Went fine, installed Windows 7 fine.
Booted back into Snow Leopard so I could unpair my bluetooth keyboard (I've found that I can only set-up the bluetooth keyboard in Windows 7 if I unpair it in OSX first). Again, Boot Camp partition doesn't show in the finder, and is grayed out in Disk Utility.
I googled this problem, and found a few people mentioning that NTFS drivers in OSX (e.g. MacFUSE, paragon etc) can cause issues because they conflict with Snow Leopard's own NTFS driver. I did have MacFUSE installed, so I removed it, but it didn't seem to change anything.
Any suggestions?

install NTFS-3G (http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/)
open disk utility and mount your greyed out partition (NTFS-3G will mount it)
unmount it
open system preferences, go to tuxera NTFS pref, second tab (Volumes)
make sure your windows 7 partition is selected from drop down menu then click "disable tuxera NTFS"
at this point i rebooted into windows, then rebooted back into snow leopard. my windows partition was once again mounted and visible in Finder

You can't move the Lion Recovery Partition or Bootcamp partiton, however you can expand the Lion Partition into empty space below it. (but can't delete or move the Lion Recovery partition)
Your Duplicator duplicated perfectly, too perfectly Likely would work with same sized drives/partitions.
This is what your going to need to do.
You need to move the Bootcamp partition to a blank external drive using WinClone and disconnect. This is so you have two backups of it. (one on your old 500GB drive)
You will need a drive enclousre or IDE/SATA to USB adapter cable for the older 500GB drive and option key boot from it. (some enclosures can't be booted from so check first Other World Computing is good place to ask)
Download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, grab any new files off the new 750GB internal drive to the old 500GB your booted from.
Open Apple's Disk Utility and Erase with Zero option the entire internal 750GB drive and let it rip, this will map off as many bad sectors and improve reliability.
Now use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 500GB Lion + Lion Recovery Partitions to the internal 750GB, it will "fix" things and place Lion Recovery at the bottom of the drive where it belongs, give all the extra space to OS X Lion.
Next your going to have to follow WinClones instructions to restore your Bootcamp, likely you will have to recreate the Bootcamp partition first (in Bootcamp) to the size you want and then clone. Likely Winclone may "fix" Windows to recognize it's in a new larger partition now. I don't know you'll have to check as I haven't used it.
When Bootcamp creates the partition it will place it near the bottom next to the Lion Recovery Partition.
As you know you will have to re-validate Windows with Lord Redmond or it expires as you changed the hardware.

Boot Camp "No Bootable Device" after OSX Partition Resize

I have a MacBook Mid/Late 2007. I started out with a 500GB drive that I partitioned 100GB for Windows 8 in Boot Camp (yes, I know only 7 is officially supported, not the point as it worked fine.) I wanted to try Mavericks so I resized my OSX partition down 100GB to make a new 100GB Mavericks partition. After I installed it and played around, I noticed when I booted with the option key, my Boot Camp partition was missing. I thought i was becaus eI had too many partitions, so I deleted Mavericks and resized my main OSX back to where it was when I started. The Boot Camp partition still won't show up when I hold option on boot, but when I run Boot Camp manager on OSX it wants to remove it, so it knows it's there. It also shows up in the startup disks pane, but if I select it and reboot, I get a "No Bootable Device -- insert boot disk and press any key" message. If there a way to bring back Windows?
Here's the kicker: My optical drive DOES NOT work. I installed Windows 7 off DVD long ago before it quit working and the only way I got Windows 8 on was through a downloaded upgrade. I know I should get it fixed, but I don't have the money (and I never use it, and this is 2 that have died on me in this laptop.) My system can't boot anything other than OSX off flash drives or external DVD drives (I tried, and I tried reEFIt, neither worked.) So I need a solution that doens't require a boot CD if at all possible.

You can't add/remove or alter the partitions if Boot Camp is installed, Windows will cease to boot.
To fix it, erase all paritions except OSX. Start over, 2 partitions only (OSX and Boot Camp)

Snow Leopard and Boot Camp partition

can i keep my Boot Camp partition intact when performing a clean install of SL?
does it allow me to format only the Mac partition of the HD, keeping the Windows (Boot Camp) partition untouched and fully functional?

I would move to SL if, and only if, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal on it and had my files backed up separately on a second partition of the external. I think that there is enough risk in going to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine. Without getting into detail, it can be highly problematic. You will be able to extract your settings, files, and programs from your clone if you do the current version of an erase and install.
To erase and install, start up to your DVD and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and erase you drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with your installation. At the end, you will be able to choose to reclaim your settings, files, and apps from the clone (leave the external drive plugged in during the installation).
If you do not like SL, then you can restore your internal using the clone. I would do all cloning and related restoration with SuperDuper. This app is up to date.

OS X Partition split and duplicated when creating Boot Camp partition

I have installed a larger internal HD 3TB into my iMac Late 2009 21.5 inch. All went well until I used Boot Camp to set up a Windows partition. My intention to have an OS X partition of 2.8TB and a Boot Camp partition of 200 GB. I am running the latest version of Yosemite.
Once the Boot Camp partition completed, and Windows 7 installed successfully, I have rebooted in OS X to find that the HD is now showing as a Partition of 200GB for Boot Camp, a partition of 2TB for Macintosh HD (with all my applications and data etc), and a second Macintosh HD partition of 800GB, also containing all my applications and data etc which appears to have been duplicated. Prior to completing the Boot Camp process, the internal HD was showing correctly as a single partition of 3TB.
I have completed this process twice, with the same result. After the first occasion, I reformatted the new internal HD and started completely from blank again (as I was unable to erase or change the duplicated partition in Disk Utility).
I used Migration Assistant to transfer my files, data etc from the old Internal HD which is now an external HD.
Any thoughts on what I am doing incorrectly?

This is expected behavior. On your Mac, the 3TB disk is partitioned to allow Windows to function properly in BIOS mode. BIOS mode (and CSM-BIOS, to be precise) has a limitation of a 2TB disk. on a larger disk (including 3TB Fusion drives), the disk is partitioned in such a manner that the Windows adheres to the 2TB limit.
You can can see the exact partitioning, if you are so inclined, using the following Terminal commands.
diskutil list
diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

How can I get Lion to recognize my boot camp partition.

Yesterday morning I found my mac suffered from a b-tree failure and was unable to access OS X 10.6. I ended up booting into my Boot camp partition of Windows XP and backed it up then reinstalled Snow leopard. Then I upgraded to Lion, saw it fail due to a partitioning issue, created a 2gb partition called Mac HD 2 (by shrinking mac hd), saw i could install but not full install. So I created another partition and installed Lion successfully. Got into Lion and shrunk my 2x 2GB partitions into one 4GB partition. My Windows XP hard drive boot camp partition was still on my desktop. I can access all the files but I can not boot into it. When I hold down the option key there is only Mac HD or Recovery partition.
Is there any way to get the boot camp partition to work?
I did notice that when I was looking through the settings I could choose which HD was the default boot option. Mac hd with 10.7 and a folder called Windows XP were both available.

We also cannot get Robohelp to recognize our FrameMaker installation.
We are using Robohelp 9 and Framemaker 11.
We are in the process of moving all of our Robohelp content to Framemaker, but our project team still needs CHM files for the next release or so. So we figured we could move our content to Frame 11, then import the Frame content into Robohelp when we needed to generate the CHM files.
The process works great when we use RH 10 and Frame 11, but we get the following error when we use RH 9:
"This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker. Install FrameMaker and try again."
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Frame 11 and RH 9, but am still getting the same error. Buying a set of new Robohelp 10 licenses probably isn't an option.
Any other suggestions?

Boot Camp partition not showing in startup disk or when holding alt key

I've read countless discussions about similar questions to this one, however, I still haven't been able to find any solution.
I have an old 2006 MacBook that has just been fully updated and reformatted. I'm running OSX 10.7.5 and Boot Camp 4.
I went through the Boot Camp installation from an Windows ISO image in my usb drive, where it succesfully downloaded all files needed, and prompted me to make the partition, after which it restarted and was supposed to take me to the installation manager in the Windows partition. I first got the "No bootable driver" error, to which I read I was supposed to restart the computer, hold the alt key, and choose the boot camp partition. However, it does not show up. I only get Mac and Recover drivers.
I went into the Mac's startup disk, and only the Mac driver is showing, no Boot Camp driver, however, when I go into Disk Utilities, I can see that the BootCamp driver there.
I read somewhere that I should zap pram and reset SMC, which I did with their instructions. It didn't change anything, I still only get the Mac driver and Recovery when hitting the alt key.
Does it have something to do with my MacBook being older? That's the only reason I can think that would not allow me to do this.
Let me know what other info I can give you so that you can please help me!! Thanks in advance!

In last resort I solved my missing BOOTCAMP partition problem using a program called: iPartition from coriolis systems located in the United Kingdom http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php it took me a coupleof days to figure out the credit card system they have Hint: use your 9 digit zip code to find your credit card address and call your bank if you have an overseas hold on the card!!!! The program found my missing BOOTCAMP partition and restored it. It did take a couple of e-mails to learn to use their program. Let me know how you turn out!
