Alphabetical sorting in album view broken in 3.4.0

Upon updating to Spotify 3.4.0, I noticed that alphabetical sorting of albums, by artist or title, no longer works correctly. Neither killing/restarting the app nor deleting/reinstalling it has any effect. This is on iOS 8.3.  This is when sorting by artist. Boris, Brian Eno, Burial, Busta Rhymes, then Beyonce, back to Burial, Beyonce, then Beastie Boys. It's a total mess. Sorting by album title is in slightly better shape, but articles really screw it up.  It takes everything that starts with "The" and sticks in in between the S's and T's. Well, almost everything:  Here we've got a few stragglers stuck between T and U. None of this makes any sense and it's a real pain. Apple Music comes out tomorrow, and I'm surprised that Spotify thought it was a good idea to roll out an update with a major issue like this right before a big competitor's launch.

This was my reply. It was done quickly but I think it gets the point across.

thank you Andrea for your reply,
That's a big shame if this change was intended. To have your Albums listed in a casual order and not Alphabetically seems a huge step back for the iOS version and all of its users. It makes that menu redundant in all honesty, especially if you have over 100 albums. Why change or take away a very important part of the experience that a lot of users want?
For instance, this morning I regrettably started my 3 month trial with Apple Music to see how this experience is. As much as I didn't want to, I felt like I should give it a try, since the main part of my experience with Spotify has changed/gone.
They list the Albums exactly like Spotify used to (before the last update). So in Artist Alphabetical order, with the Albums underneath in alphabetical order too. This means I can scroll through all of "My Music" in alphabetical order without realising some artists are at the top or bottom and mixed in with others.
For me, it makes no sense at all for Spotify to change this. It now looks a mess and the "Album" section to me, and others, is now useless. I now have to filter "Artists" and select that, to then select an album I want. This is not intuitive at all. As I said, it's a step backwards.
I hope the team look at this seriously, because it could possibly put users off the experience. I for one have defended the Spotify team on forums such as Reddit, who mostly put the team down for the huge problems on the desktop version recently, saying its a step backwards for most features. I now seem a bit bewildered why the team are also doing this for the iOS version.
I think you get my point anyway. To change something so important without explanation is madness. Your team need a lot more communication with it's users, or you could be losing quite a few of them to an alternative streaming service.
I hope this feedback helps. If you require any more information please let me know.

  • Can you sort albums by release date, rather than year, in album view?

I love the new album view in iTunes 11, but the only problem I have with it is sometimes albums are in the wrong order.
For example, last year Green Day released a trilogy of albums called ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! but since they were released in the same year, they're ordered as ¡Dos!, ¡Tré, ¡Uno! when sorted by artist and then year which really doesn't sit right with me.
In short, the sorting options for albums view are very limited, is there any way to extend them?
Also I'm aware that I could, as a cheap fix, change the sorting in album to the release date backwards, but I'd rather not do that as it would make it a bit more troublesome for me to navigate my albums on my iPhone.
    Thanks!

I agree that Apple should improve the year field to be an actual date.
I am not 100% happy doing this, but when you have multiple albums from a single artist for the same release year, a temporary solution is to chage the album title by adding an outline type letter before album titles for that year, so that they appear in the correct order:
    David Bowie
    1977
    a. Low
    David Bowie
    1977
    b. "Heroes"
    etc
This could help in the short term until Apple changes that field.

  • In songs view, sort by 'album' alone stopped working

I normally prefer to view my songs in iTunes using the 'Songs' view, listing everything with the details shown. I'll usually set it to sort by 'Album'.
Clicking on the 'Album' header used to give me options that I could cycle through, but suddenly it is stuck on sorting only by 'Album by Artist', and I no longer have the option to simply sort by 'Album' alone.
I am unable to restore the ability to sort only by 'Album', have gone through all of the menu choices in how I view or sort my albums. Can anyone suggest a reason for this happening, and a way to fix it?
I have not made any changes to my system software or applications recently that would be obvious causes for this happening. All of my software is up-to-date.
    iMac (mid-2007); OSX 10.9.4, iTunes 11.3.1 (2)

I've tried re-installing my iTunes software and searched throughout the forums and elsewhere without so far being able to determine how to resolve this difficulty.
In case my original question formulation was not clear, in the past I could click on the header (while viewing my iTunes library in 'Songs' view) and cycle through "Album", "Album by Artist", in either ascending or descending order, and so forth.
Now I'm only able to chose between "Album by Artist", either ascending or descending. There is no "Album" view option available to me, as there has always been in the past.
I'm completely puzzled as to how this happened. Perhaps I inadvertently hit the wrong key combination while using iTunes and it changed something, I just don't know.
I would really appreciate it if any other forum members have suggestions as to how I might fix this!

  • Can I sort by composer in Album view in Itunes 11?

The new iTunes 11 interface is most annoying.
    1.  Is there a way to show the album artwork in the "Songs" listing?
    2.  In the Album view, is there a way to sort by composer?
    ...thx

I believe the closest you can come is look at your songs in Songs.  There you can sort by albums.
The album view does not contain a list view any longer.

  • TV Shows in Album VIew Not Sorted By Episode

I just downloaded iTunes 7.1 and my TV episodes are no longer sorted by episode when I'm in album view. They are correctly sorted by season, however. Does iTunes now use the EpisodeID instead of the Episode # to sort, because I put in the names of the episodes for the EpisodeID?

Check out this thread for a discussion on my problem.

  • How to alphabetically sort albums and folders within a folder

Much to my dismay, I discovered that iPhoto will not alphabetically sort folders or albums that are within a folder. It will only sort folders and albums (in separate groups) that are at the "root" level beneath the ALBUMS label. I used "iPhoto Folder Import 1.0" to import multiple clip art and stock photo files which resulted in many nested folders and albums that did not stay in alphabetical order (because iPhoto often randomize them when you add them to an existing folder).
Here's how to get around the problem.
Albums: 1. Select all the albums in a folder. 2. Drag the albums to the ALBUMS label so they end up on the root level. 3. Right click on any of the selected albums and choose "Sort Albums." 4. Drag the still selected albums back into their original folder. They should retain their alphabetical order.
Folders: 1. Close all the folders that you want to alphabetize. 2. Follow steps 1-4 above with "folders" in place "albums."
I cannot understand why sorting won't work within folders. I also do not understand why we don't have the option to alphabetically interleave folders and albums. The only way to achieve this is to create folders for just one album, which seems silly.

How do you suggest i resolve the issue of different data types in order to use this function? I have tried a few different ways and have whenever I adjust, it wont run through my sub VI's correctly due to being different data types.
You have to READ THE FILES.  Jeff just showed you how to use a FOR loop to go through the files.  You still need to open the files, read them and then process the data.
I had assumed from CSmith8's original post that the text file processing vi worked.  just drop that vi into the for loop and wire the file name in!
Alternately, attach the code that processes the file and a sample file.  I bet we can show you a thing or two about how to do it cleaner and faster  then point you to the right learning resources so one day you can show us some new tricks.

  • Album view sorted by year in reversed order?

Apple, why did you take this feature away? People with large libraries of albums don't want to scroll down a long way to get to the albums added lately.
The option to show the year of the files added in album view was also a big hit in previous versions.

Really really annoying! Over the years I ordered manually my huge library sorting tracks with this technique:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/itunes-mac-pc/263083-sort-order-when-using-album-artis t-year-album-list-view.html
Now this trick doesn't work anymore and there's no way to order albums descending.
The new GUI is absolutely nice, Apple give us an additional selectbox like JayBrar says

  • Why is Remote app album view different than iTunes?

I use the Remote app on my iPad to control the streaming of my PC's iTunes music library to my stereo.  I like the Album view because I can see most of the album covers. In iTunes 11.1 on my PC, album view displays the albums alphabetically by artist.  i.e. all Beatles albums are listed before any Rolling Stones albums.  But when viewing the same library on my iPad using the Remote app, the albums are listed alphabetically by album title, not by artist.  So each artist's albums are scattered all over.  I don't know about you, but when I'm looking for an album to play, I think about artists, not titles of albums.  But there doesn't seem to be any way to change the way the Remote app orders albums.  Am I missing something?  Is there any way to configure the Remote app to display albums in artist order?

Hi go the first page of the Remote, the one which shows your shared libraries.
Click Settings, and then Sort by Artist tab,
    Hope that helps!

  • Alphabetical sorting of Music Artists [Name of Artist] All Songs?

When I go to Music>Artists>[Name of Artist]>All Songs, it sorts the songs by album, is there a way to have this sorted alphabetically instead, without regard to album? Basically I want a way to view an alphabetical list of songs by a certain artist without making a million playlists. This would only apply to Music>Artists>[Artist]>All Songs, I want everything else to stay as is. This is for a current gen Ipod Classic. Also, would doing this (if it's even possible) mess up the sorting of artists who I only have one album for (I would want these to stay sorted by track number)?

Regarding the playlists, just click on the NAME column within each playlist to sort the list by name. Make sure the shuffle icon is not selected before you do this. Your playlists will be in Track Name order now. (You must do this for EACH playlist)
I believe when choosing an individual artist, then choosing all albums by that artist, the tracks will be sorted by album name then track number per album, so the ALBUMS will be played in alphabetical order, but the songs will play in the track order of each album. There is no way to chage this, as far as I know.
There may be a workaround for this by removing all the track numbers from all of your files. However, this will mess up your album order if you ever wish to listen to individual albums.
To each his own, I know, but hearing all songs in alphabetical order drives me insane.

  • Firmware 1.0.2 released - fixes Cover Flow album view

    Hi folks,
Didn't see this posted yet - just synced my 3G nano and firmware 1.0.2 was available.
Cover Flow is now showing albums exactly as the default album view in iTunes. Hooray!
    -Nikhil

The only thing which is now better in coverflow is, that compilations are now hidden, but coverflow still lists up the artists in alphabetical order, not the albums ! Why?
Apple, it can't be so difficult to let coverflow list up albums, _not artists_, in alphabetical order.
Compilations are now listed just once (as they should be), but there's always listed the first artists name of a compilation, instead of "various artists". Of course you can set in every single compilation the first tracks "sorting name" as "various artists", but it can't be so difficult for apple to make that as default, as it works in iTunes.
Please don't notice my terrible english. I'm a little bit upset >:-(

  • MP3 burn sorted by Album not making Folders

Trying to burn an MP3 CD of some albums, but when I sort by album in album view, so I will get the albums songs split into folders (as described by Apple themselves), I end up with just a long list of songs...no folders. Am I missing something?
My MacBook won't burn over 4x too...that is VERY disappointing.

I suppose the only solution within iTunes is to rename the albums themselves so that alphabetical order reflects chronological order. This is sad that it cannot be done without heavy lifting on the part of the user.
With more car stereos supporting MP3 CDs it makes sense to improve this experience in iTunes. Not all of us want to haul an iPod around and hook it up everywhere we go.

  • Elements Organizer 8. Alphabetic sort on file name

I have been advised to create an Album and then select Album Order.  When I do this it still sorts in Date (Newest First) order. I have check Preferences are set to sort Albums alphabetically not manually.  Can anyone help me to get my selection sorted in alphabetic order on file name?

    Brian
I have tried your link to the ‘feedback.photoshop.com’ thread but get a message ‘Page Not Found’.  If you do get through my comment would be as follows:
It is sad that Organizer is not able to sort a key selection of images from multiple source files into alphabetic order by file name.  It can sort by ‘Date (Newest First)’ and ‘Date (Oldest First)’ so it should not be that hard to make it sort alphabetically.
When images are loaded into Albums a new sort ‘Album Order’ is offered, and the wording of the ‘Options – Preferences - Keyword Tags & Albums’ for Albums, supported by the Help description, gives hope of an alphabetic sort.  However this is misleading.  It says  Alphabetic or Manual but it should say Album order or Manual.  Album order will only be alphabetic if the source images have been pre-sorted into alphabetic sequence by originating in the same folder and are then imported in Folder View.  If imported to the Album as thumbnails in Thumbnail View they will remain in the sequence of the thumbnails and even if Alphabetic is selected in the Options they will not be sorted alphabetically.
An alphabetic sort would enhance any future release version of Optimize.
    Best wishes
    Mike

  • PSE11 - alphabetical sort workarounds

Here are a few ideas for those who miss the alphabetical sort in the PSE11 organizer. In previous versions, the pictures were displayed in alphabetical order when in folder view.
Now, when you are either in 'Folders' or 'My folders' views, you can only sort by date or import batch.
When you are in an album, the choice is also date or 'custom'.
Understandably, that lacking sort order is mainly a problem for those working from scans and with a folder structure organization.
1 - When you are in 'Folders' or 'My folders' view, higlight the folder in the left panel and right click 'Reveal in explorer'. Two clicks and you can browse the thumbnails in the default alphabetical order in the Windows window. (I suppose it must be the same for Macs...)
2 - From the same right click you can choose : 'instant album'. Two clicks again and you have a new album. It's possible to sort the album manually in a sticky 'custom order'. If your photos have been just imported from a scanning session, I think the best workflow is not to name/rename your pictures before the import. It seems more logical to order the files manually in the album, then use the organizer rename function to give the pictures in your folder a common starting name + digits.
3 - In numerous cases, the 'date taken' is totally irrelevant for scanned pictures. Either you will change the date for a suitable estimate, or if date does not matter, you can try the following.
Select all files in the folder and use the organizer to give them the same date. That will use the secondary sort order of the Organizer : alphabetical. That's enough to display the pictures in a folder in alphanumerical order. Note that it will be the common ASCII sorting which is somewhat different from the Windows alphabetical order.
My guess is that this 'acknowledged' problem will only be solved in PSE12. So, in the meantime, it may good to have two click solutions to display alphabetically or to create an 'instant album'.
Also see the feedback page on this problem:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/element_organizer_do_not_sort_alphab etically?page=1

Sorry but I did a bit of misleading... I thought I was on PSE11, when I read the post that this had been fixed in PSE12 I checked - and found I'm on PSE12 already.
    Oops...
In any event, just to report this, the alphabetical sort most certainly does not work properly in PSE12 - at least my copy, running on Win 7 Pro.  Both are patched and as up to date as they think they need to be.
If I choose folder view (which is my normal default), I can certainly CHOOSE "by name" - no problem - but the files are most certainly NOT all sorted by name.  I have a lot of pictures (I often shoot 5-10,000/year) and I would guess that 99% of them DO sort by name.  The rest appear somewhat randomly in the view - often either at the beginning or the end of the sort.
If there's any pattern, it seems that all shot with my Nikon do properly sort by name, but those shot using my phone or scanned in become issues.  NOT consistently, however - again MOST that I scan or shoot with the phone DO sort properly.  Just a few don't, and if I examine the properties and meta tags for those that do not sort properly -- and compare them to those that do - everything looks identical to me.  All the same data is in all the same places, there are no extra spaces or characters anywhere that are different between the two.
FYI, ALL are subject to the same renaming workflow.  I import the originals into a temporary location, cull, and then apply a renaming utility to them to give them names that make sense (generally YYYYMMDDHHMMSS followed by a sequential number plus some English description....)  The beginning of that sequence, which is what I expect the sort to be based on, is - 100% - simply a string of numbers, down to the second.  Always.
I've tried renaming the oddballs by hand (in Windows) just to see if that does something.  Maybe there's something weird my renaming utility is doing - even though it is used on 100% of my pictures, and only a very small percentage have this problem.  No change, however.
And another fyi, which is if I view these same pictures in Windows explorer, they sort properly...
    What's up?

  • Album View and Composer Tab on Music App on IOS7

The new Music App is not exactly brilliant...
There are several things what drive me "crazy":
    1. The new Album View doesn't sort the albums alphabetically according the album artist, but by the name of the Album - the former cover flow did that and in itunes you can choose how you do it. Why can't you choose that in IOS7?
    2. You selected a omposer - you go back to the composer list and select another composer - the music app on IOS 7 doesn't show the list of the songs by the new composer, but a mixture of the first selected and the selected composer... (that doesn't happen all the time, but very often) - when I go back to the composer list and select another composer I don't want to see a mixture.
    3. Why are the Musicvideos shown in the Album view shown, too? I would start them via the vide app - how can I get them out of the album view?

See also this thread with same problem. Looks like a bug wrt. composer/album.

How do I remove all traces of  'album'? I do not want artwork, blank place holders, titles or artists sorted by album? I just want my music listed by title, artist or genre.

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad
