ALSA - Master volume no longer having an effect on headphone volume
I use ALSA and have both my 'front' (speakers) and 'headphone' audio volume set to max. Then I control the two by adjusting the master volume.
Since my last system update this worked fine however now when I change the master volume it only affects the sound coming from my speakers and my headphones are constantly at max unless I specifically change the headphone volume in 'alsamixer'. This is inconvenient since I have the master volume controlled by hotkeys.
I know I can work around this and hotkey my controls to change both the master and headphone volumes but this leaves room for things getting out of sync. Is there a way to revert back to the old method?

"Essentially" a clone and a clone are not the same. There are alot of things that don't get copied when you simply drag folders. Pathways to aliases are one of them.
Use SuperDuper! (the best IMHO) or Carbon Copy Cloner to get real bootable clones of your system and files.

Slave instance can not synchronized with the master for a long time

Slave instance can not synchronized with the master for a long time, and the gap of LSNs between slave and master are more and more larger. The transfer bytes per second between master and slave is 118MB/s , upper limit to the ethernet card. Why???
ENVIRONMENT:
1. A network program which we called mcdb is based on BDB 4.8.30. It is used to accept get/set requests and then query data from bdb or save data to bdb.
2. mcdb implements replication with bdb replication manager api. The default start replication policy is DB_REP_ELECTION, rep ack policy is DB_REPMGR_ACKS_ONE_PEER and rep priority is 100.
3. The bdb data files, bdb log files, region files and rep files are all in the same home directory.
4. There are two instances of the mcdb are separately on two standalone servers which has no other programs. These two instances are in one replication group which can elect a master automatically.
5. The master instance is online, which has lots of requests (get, set, delete).
ACTIONS:
1. Start two mcdb instances on two servers and the two instance make a replication group. Slave has already synchronized with the master.
2. Stop the slave for a long time (more than 20 hours).
3. Start the slave instance to synchronize data with master.
RESULT:
1. the gap of LSNs between slave and master are more and more larger.

Unfortunately, this issue is beyond the level of what is supported over the forum. Performance related issues are extremely complex and require an in-depth understanding of your environment and dedicated support. In a generic sense, you can look at this as a basic queueing problem. You have a server that went down and work is still coming in. When the server gets started it is possible that it may never catch up depending on new work coming in and the rate at processing the old work.
So what would you do in this case --- one thing would be to reduce the new work coming in. In HA terms this would be slowing the master down and you can increase DB_REP_ACK_TIMEOUT for this. Another thing you could do is add fresh servers to help reduce the workload. In HA terms, this would be the equivalent of restarting the client and give it a fresh look at everything. Another thing you could do is replan the system and load balance. In HA terms, it would mean something like take a hot backup of the master and reinit a client from scratch.

How do I get more effects in my action box? I am only showing a few, like "Bottom Borders, Losing Weight, Resize and Crop, and Special Effects. And they do not list but a few effects. When I have watched the tutorials, they are showing a long list of effects in the action box. (with a side space bar) I do not. When I have clicked on the little arrow at top, and clicked "Load Actions", a box comes up, but it is blank,saying "no items match your search". I'm lost! If someone could help, it would be much appreciated! I would like to start using this.

I am trying to create mp3 version of itune songs. I have gone through the preference sequence to be mp3 encoder but this is not having any effect. I have also tired from file tab to create a version but this is not available to action showing as lite grey.

Having trouble setting up the volume on my ipod...
when i put on the sound check on on my pod it really knocks the volume way down, and i find if i boost the volume to my music tracks in my itunes settings {even with sound check off} that a certain percentage of my volume control {roughly the last ten percent} on the slider doesn't work... its as if itunes is trying to keep all my music at the same volume even with sound check switched off, even after i have manually boosted the volume on my music... is it me? is there a way round this? ideally i just want to boost the volume on my music and have it all play out at roughly the same volume, but it doesn't quite seem to work... any help would be much appreciated???

Correct, using that method all you do is make it so that the maximum volume on the iPod is reached before the volume bar is at full.
For example, if you increase a track's volume in iTunes by +100% then when it's on the iPod you will find that that track hits it's maximum volume level at about half volume, and turning the iPod up to full volume will not increase the volume any higher after this point. A track which has not had it's volume altered in iTunes will reach exactly the same sound level, although of course you will need to turn the volume level of the iPod to full in this instance.
All iPods manufactured for the European market have a volume cap applied to them. It's a European directive from those nice people in Brussels who make sure we can't damage our delicate little ears.
If you have an older iPod you can use goPod to remove the cap on iPods that have this volume limitation. That should make your iPod maximum volume louder.
The soundcheck option will lower the volume on your iPod somewhat in order to level out the volume of different songs. There are 3rd party programs that do this more effectively (at least in my opinion).
For Windows there is mp3/aacGain. -
I have ipod touch 1st gen and it will no longer detect that i have headphones in the headphone jack and so i cannot turn up my volume. Is there any way it can be fixed?

i applied the "itunes 7.7.1" and "security update 2008-005" updates this morning, which required a reboot.
after rebooting, my concatenated AppleRAID volume no longer mounts!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. -

My iPod touch is having a little issue with the volume. When I plug in my headphones the volume works fine. When there aren't any headphones plugged in, no sound comes out from my iPod. When I go to turn up the volume, it still says headphones. I tried restarting it a few times, nothing worked. I looked up many tutorials, and still nothing did the trick. Any tips?
- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost

How to convert Works doc no longer having Works?
I have been sent a large Works document. No longer having Works, I am trying to figure out how to convert it into .rtf of some other form that is readable.
Since you've posted in the AppleWorks forum, by "Works" I assume you mean AppleWorks. There are a few options to get to the contents of that file.
The easiest & most reliable option other than using AppleWorks or Pages 4 or earlier would be to open the file with LibreOffice. It's a free, open source, Office clone that does a very good job of opening AppleWorks & ClarisWorks files. You can then save them as RTF or Word.
Second would be to open the file with TextEdit that comes with OS X. You will get a lot of "garbage" formatting text before & after the actual text. That formatting can be many pages long.
Third would be to look at the options available from Panergy Software. They do have demo software to try. -

I've been using various berkeleydb versions for almost a decade and a half with the same configuration in the DatabaseEnvironment setup:

Suddenly, after a recent switch to version 6.1 of berkeleydb, the addDataDir call seems to be having no effect. Instead, all the database files get created in the baseDirectory. Oddly the log files are still going in the log subdirectory, old log files in oldlog, etc. Just data files seem affected. Weirder, if I use an existing database, it finds them, but new databases I create *since* the change go in the wrong directory. This seems simple as can be, so I don't see how I can suddenly be screwing this up after 14 years. When I examine the result of getDataDirs upon creating the tables it has the single directory I set it to. But it is clearly ignoring it for NEWLY created tables. So why is this suddenly happening?KDZ is correct! setDataDir is deprecated. Replacement calls are addDataDir and setCreateDir. The java version of the doc is not as clear as it could be and we will correct that. A better description is found in the C doc.

my 5 yr. old turned off the volume on my ipad. when I hit the volume buttons it just says "sound effects" and does not go up or down
I had the same problem- go to Utilities, General, Use Side Switch To, and change it from Mute to Lock Rotation- this solved the problem for me.

I have a recently acquired iphone 4s and despite having good hearing and the volume up to max can barely hear who ever I am speaking to. WHat is wrong with the phone?
The plastic cover was removed before I left the store and I have moved the volume up and down during, before and after phone calls. Have tried it in protective case and out of it. Impossible to hear calls unless phone is on speaker. There seems to be lots of comments re this. Is it a significant flaw? Can I fix it?

Headphone volume control malfunction
hello everyone I'm from the Philippines and I just want to know if there are guys out there whose having the same problem as i have with my ipod 3rd gen. shuffle, i bought my shuffle just last month and i use this with my daily walk and all of a sudden the volume went down and the volume control on the remote of the headphone is not responding. Can anyone also from the Philippines help me where can i go to have it repaired, replaced or what to do i really appreciate it thanks.
I'm on my third set of 3G Shuffle headphones, too. At first, I was leery of buying a product that relies completely on another cheaper component to operate. It's like when they stopped putting fast forward and rewind buttons on VCRs and universal remotes weren't $6 at Walgreens. Lose the remote and you're VCR is basically a "play only" item. And this is the same thing. Except Apple wants $30 if your lousy headphones break. The first time my Shuffle acted up, I thought the buttons had just broken inside the controller as it felt more spongy and less "clicky." Apple store swapped them. The second pair quit working after a week. I realized it must have something due to sweat in the controller because I run with the shuffle hanging upside down- so it would be next to impossible for moisture to get inside the jack. I've been running and working out with various iPods for years and sweat has never been an issue. Here's a fact: humans sweat. Shuffle is small to make it portable. So people can take it with them when they walk, run, exercise. But it's obvious Shuffle isn't designed for those things. I knew I was taking a risk buying a product that depended on a cheaper remote to operate. I just expected it to last longer than a month or two. And now it appears we're all stuck in an endless line at the genius bar. Hey Apple: just issue a recall on the 3G Shuffle so we can get our money back and move on to something else that actually works- you can afford it. Or just redesign the headphones and let us swap these for ones that don't fail when they come into contact with the human body. How bout it?
