Amd/ati video drive

Question.. i'm having a problem with my AMD/ATI VIDEO DRIVE.. It has been suggested to uninstall the program.. will my laptop run properly or how do i resolve this issue.. i no longer have a warranty it is almost 4 years old...

Your graphics card(and most hardware) requires drivers to run efficiently. If you do not have proper drivers installed your graphics card may run at full performance and overheat. The best thing to do is go to the AMD website and download the latest drivers for your graphics card.
Btw what problem are you facing?

  • T43p ATI Video Driver gives blue screen

    Hi,
I have been having issues with the video driver for the ATI graphics card for Thinkpad T43p despite downloading the latest driver available on the Lenovo at:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-61503

    Thank you,

    Welcome to the forum!
My experience has been that this type of issue arising on a T4x/R5x series machine with ATi GPU usually points to a failing graphics card.
This is the driver I use on my own T43p:

  • Video playback suddenly black after ATI video driver update?

Totally bizarre - I updated to the latest drivers using RadarSync.  Now videos from my flip (mpeg4) all play back as all black, unless I move the "Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Troubleshoot/Hardware acceleration" slider to "Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3d" or lower.
Anyone else encountered this issue where videos start playing as all black?  It seems to be independent of the decoder (xvid or ffmpeg) or video player (Microsoft Video player, VLC) application that I use.
    Thinkpad T42p WinXP SP3
ATI  MOBILITY FIRE GL T2/T2e 8.453.0.0

I replaced all the ATI drivers with the ones directly from the website, which down-graded me to the 2007 version of the "ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2" 6.14.10.6547

  • T60p XP video driver problems

    Hi,
Just had to reformat and reinstall my T60p, and have put XP SP3 and the lenovo ATI video driver v8.533 on. Since then, I've had intermittent video redraw problems - parts of windows not being redrawn when minimising / maximising. Seems to affect all applications, and there's very little else installed other than a couple of portable apps.
It seems that sometimes the video performance is really really bad - windows leaving trails behind them when being dragged across the screen, just like an unaccelerated video driver would. And various rectangles of windows failing to be redrawn completely.
But sometimes, its working fine - I can't see a pattern to it (yet). I've tried reinstalling the driver from a fresh download, and I've tried disabling acceleration in the troubleshooting section of display properties, with no effect. And there doesn't seem to be anything in CCC which helps, but for info, here's what it says:

    Thanks,
    Dave.

Yes, that's the link I got the video driver from.
I tried downloading the bios flash utility from your link anyway, but it said I already had the latest version (which is what I thought), and didn't need to update. I confirmed this by booting into the bios config screen, and it definitely displays ...3WW there. I must admit I had assumed the bios details from CCC were for the GPU bios, not the machine's bios. But I couldn't find any references to updating the GPU bios.
To confirm, here's the full output from the System Info button within CCC, which displays the machine's bios details:

  • AMD/ATI driver problems on a Dell laptop with attached dual monitors

I have a Dell Precision M4800 laptop with a docking station for two additional monitors. I'm shooting for a "big desktop" setup, with my laptop display and the two external monitors forming one large multi-monitor X screen.
When deciding which video driver I'd need, I did the usual:
    $ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Venus XT [Radeon HD 8800M Series]
Which is weird, because the M4800 isn't shipped with 8800M cards. Rather, it's shipped with the AMD FirePro M5100 Mobility Pro (see above link) (also, too many "Pros", AMD...).
I tried the open-source driver, but I couldn't get both my external monitors working in tandem, so I went with catalyst-test, since the non-beta version of the proprietary driver doesn't support the 3.13 kernel (or my alleged 8800M series card, for what it's worth).
My display setup using catalyst-test is still far from ideal. My dual (horizontally adjacent) monitors reset to cloned/mirrored desktops after every reboot, and my machine refuses to show three monitors (dual monitors + laptop display), even with the 2GB of dedicated RAM in my graphics card (see above M4800 link). There's other miscellaneous annoyances as well.
Using hardinfo, I see that my VGA driver thinks it only has 256MB of RAM... which doesn't align with the M4800 specs. Is there a way to change this value?
Just today, I found the catalyst-firepro driver, which I think might be the correct driver for my laptop, at least given the specs on the M4800 from the website.
There's also the option of not using my AMD card at all, and just using the Intel graphics on my laptop. (I had to disable hybrid graphics in my BIOS to get any AMD-specific drivers to work). I'd like to steer away from this, due to the performance loss, but I'd be willing to make the change if the pros outweighed the cons.
As I see it, I have a few options:
AMD/ATI open source driver: Can't seem to get two monitors working, much less three...
catalyst-test: Any two monitors will work together, but not three. Other annoyances.
    catalyst-firepro: Have not tested yet.
Intel open-source driver with AMD card disabled: Have not tested yet.
Can anyone who has had similar issues and/or hardware offer a best course of action which has worked for them? I know we're supposed to avoid "opinion" questions, but I think this is grounded enough in the scientific method to merit some helpful responses.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    clfarron4 wrote:
The last option to me is screaming catalyst-pxp at me, because that's one of the few options if you have integrated graphics and a discrete graphics card.
Let me get this straight: Can you disable the either or both of the Intel/AMD graphics in the BIOS settings? If so, but don't want to disable either, you might want to look at the hybrid graphics section of the wiki.
I know about powerXpress and I think I'd like to avoid it. My experience with hybrid graphics on other Linux distributions is that it's rather unstable or just plain unsupported. If someone can convince me otherwise, given their experience with hybrid graphics on Arch/Linux, I might reconsider.
I'm fairly certain I can enable either of my GPU's separately, but I'll have to check for sure next I reboot my PC.
The last option I mentioned because I thought the Intel drivers might be more robust than the AMD drivers, which have don't have a sterling reputation when it comes to supporting Linux (compared to nVidia anyways, who I know in the past have had good Linux support).

  • AMD/ATi with xf86-video-ati is glitching (random frame hang)

I've asked #archlinux about this multiple times to no avail. Also, I can't find anything on the Wiki about an issue like this.
Basically my computer hangs for around a 8th-4th second or so about every 20-40 seconds. The hang is visual only (i think), meaning no audio glitches or network glitches (that I'm aware of). I have a OpenGL test writing out frame rate, and during the hang the FPS consistently drops from 61 to 51. No CPU spikes are visible in the System Monitor, so my guess is that it's video driver related.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I have an overclocked ATi graphics card (specs below) so I'm thinking that's probably related to the issue. Any help is very welcome.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 920
    GPU: AMD Radeon HD 4870 (O.C.) 512Mb

ps. I've tried many different combinations of Cool'n'Quite + cpufrequtils with no luck. ACPID 2.0 is disabled in the bios.
[EDIT] also, I would get the Catalyst drivers if they worked with Xorg 1.12, but I'd rather have Gnome Shell than Catalyst drivers ATM.

  • Black screen on resume from sleep using open source AMD/ATI driver

When waking from sleep using systemctl suspend or pm-suspend , I am presented with a black screen. I can still open programs, type, etc. but cannot see what I am doing. I usually just wind up rebooting from whatever terminal I had open, but again I can't see what I am typing. Upon reboot, the screen starts back up again. Everything else seems to resume from sleep just fine, it's just the screen that won't turn back on.
I came from Ubuntu and had this same problem there. However, I only had this problem when using the open source xf86-video driver; when using the proprietary drivers, I was able to suspend/resume just fine. So it seems this problem is specific to the open source drivers.
If I'm using an external monitor, my external monitor will resume just fine after waking from sleep, but the laptop screen will not.
Googling around shows this is a common problem with AMD/ATI cards, and after a lot of attempts and failures I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has solved this problem.
What I've tried so far (without success):
-various quirks included with pm-utils to turn on dpms after resume
    -xrandr after resumption from sleep
==xrandr --output LVDS --off (If used without suspending (so while the screen still works) this seems to crash Gnome the first time around, but Gnome automatically restarts. If used a second time, it completely blanks the screen and requires a reboot)
    ==xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1600x900
-xset dpms force on or xset dpms force off after resumption from sleep
-vbetool dpms off and vbetool dpms on results in error message "Real mode call failed"
-scripts using vbetool or xrandr when resuming from sleep
-switching between virtual consoles and gnome using alt-ctrl-fn-f1 and alt-ctrl-fn-f2 keys
    My setup:
    -HP Envy dv7
    -UEFI dual-boot with Windows 8
    -AMD Radeon HD 7640G
    -xf86-video-ati 1:7.2.0-1 driver
-Gnome DE using GDM login manager
    Thank you.
EDIT: I did try using the proprietary drivers for a time, but found I couldn't adjust my brightness. At first I thought working suspension > adjustable brightness, but I quickly changed my mind after one night of trying to work on an unadjustable maximally bright screen.

Unfortunately I could not fix the problem so I wiped my system and loaded all new drivers before I found this posting.
Is there a way to get the old ATI driver that works? The only one available on the ATI and Lenovo website is the latest one with the problem. I agree with you David, Lenovo should have fixed this problem already with ATI.
