Amsn + iSight VS. Me

i use Amsn as my msn application (i think anyone will agree that microsoft messenger for mac is just the worst excuse for msn users who switched to mac but still wanna have all their old functions)
anyways.
amsn used to connect the webcam brilliantly, but for the last 2 months, my friends have been complaining that my webcam is "just white" when it connects. the iSight works fine every time, and when i use webcam with amsn, it works on MY end... but its not connecting. either my internet or amsn is the problem. i know that much.. i just have no idea how to fix it so that the webcam connects the actual pictures its showing me.
if anyone could help, it would be very muchly appreciated.

Hi
Dont Know about aMSN, first try upgrading the firmware on the 205 see http://www.zensupport.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/article.aspx?id=10453 please read carefully.
Also this is how to getting the 205 working in iChat http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2772641&#2772641

    Hi All,
I am wanting to use aMSN with my isight and using an ADSL router Voyager 205. However for some reasons (common i understand) the router needs the ports changing to allow the isight to work, checked out how to do it, called BT and still no luck, NOT WORKING. Need it to work to talk to my son in Brasil, and he on Windows!!!!! MSN
    Keep getting the message:
    type IP-Restrict-NAT
    Listening - False
YOu are firewalled or behind a router
    Webcam extention is loaded
    Capture extention -QuicktimeTcl is loaded
IM not firewalled so it seems it is the router not finding the isight.
It gives a link to a Q & A with solution but doesnt work with my router for some reason.
    CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE.

  • ISight with Skype and aMSN - inverted picture

When I use iSight with Skype or aMSN, the picture is horizontally inverted and no longer functions as if I'm looking into a mirror like with iChat.
There are no options in either program to change this (that I can find). Does anyone know of a solution? I would like flip it horizontally so the image is as if I was looking into a mirror as per iChat.

    Hello Mr_Harley,
Did you get enough info from Tony (Defcom) to consider your question Answered?
I know of no cheaper solution to your problem for both Skype and aMSN than the $8 iGlasses suggestion than Tony offered, but there may be individual solutions that some aMSN or Skype users could recommend.
If you are willing to consider different software for each application, you can search the great Skype Help pages for Skype-specific help or post your question in the Skype for Mac OS X forum.
For a aMSN-specific solution, try a search or post in the aMSN Forum.
If you need more suggestions or information before you can mark this question "Answered," please let us know what part of your Topic still needs to be addressed, and we will try to give you some other suggestions.

  • Isight not working with Mercury, aMSN & Skype

    Hi All,
I have just got my first mac and have been trying to use MSN or Skype to communicate online.
When beginning a webcam conversation in either Mercury, aMSN or Skype the camera is recognised and the video conversation is started. I then see the contact i am talking to and my self on my built in isight camera. However all of them have said to me they just see a white screen.
I have searched around a lot online for this issue and found other people have had this problem but no one seems to have ever posted a solution to this issue.
I have checked for software updates to snow leopard and this is completely up to date. I have used the newest versions of Mercury, Skype & aMSN. I read about conflict between about 2 programs trying to use the camera and made sure that none of these were open at the same time to stop the isight working.
Other than this i dont really know what to try.
Could it be a problem with my internet connection?
    Thanks for your help

In case you do not hear back from Defcom, here is my suggestion. (If Defcom gives different advice, use his. He is a GREAT help to all of us, and especially to Brit users.)
Is there anything obvious to change on the router? I'm guessing allowing different ports direct access in and out?
The router configuration of your connection may be the problem. Because it is furnished pre-configured by your ISP, I think your ISP should be best able to properly answer this question.
If you really want (or need) to pursue port settings without their help, you can find necessary setting and detailed instructions for many devices at http://www.portforward.com
I think i'll email my ISP and ask, i dont really want to leave the firewall down on the router.
For this issue, too, your ISP should be able to tell you the best way to use their product with the application(s) you need to run on your system.
You are wise to keep the router firewall enabled if possible. If you find that you must disable your external firewall, be sure to keep your Snow Leopard  > System Preferences... > Security > Firewall enabled.

  • ISight with aMSN

I'm trying to use aMSN for an IM'ing program. For normal chat, it works fine. However, when I try to use a the iSight camera to connect to a video chat, I get an "Apple Error -9405." I've heard that there are a few reasons for this.
    1. iSight camera isn't connected.
    2. iSight camera not supported by QuickTime.
Well, it's a built-in iSight, so I'm going to assume that it's connected. Also, the camera works perfectly fine with PhotoBooth. Also, there's a "Video and Audio Configuration" in aMSN's Preferences, but it doesn't seem to do much good.
Any ideas so as to let me use this aMSN program with my iSight camera to let me use it as a webcam for video chat?
Also, I'm on a 15.4" MBP with OS X 10.4.10, and with a built-in iSight Camera, if that helps anybody.
    --Hans

    Hello Hans.
I do not use aMSN, so best suggestion I can offer is to try the dedicated aMSN forum for your aMSN-specific question.
If you have too much problem getting aMSN to work, you might wish to try the alternative MSN client application for OS X, Mercury 1.9 for Mac OS X. Perhaps you will find Mercury easier to use or better supported.
Either of the two apps should let you to connect your OS X Mac to other MSN clients, so use whichever gives you the best results.

Help. For a few months been talking to partner on their pc with amsn on my imac with built in cam.
Partner got new pc. Now amsn is not sending my cam?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Angus,
If it was done on her previous PC it is a strong possibility.
They need to go Start > Control Panels > Firewall > Exception tab and get added.
The other thing is if htye used Port Forwarding in their modem.
This could be trying to forward the data to the IP for the other computer.

  • I need help with ISIGHT!  I can't get it to work with MSN!

    HI,
My issue is this... I have AIM/AOL and I am able to see myself on webcam.. however noone else can unless they HAVE a webcam... My first question is- "DO you have to have a WEBCAM on both ends for both people to see you?" Does the person I am chatting with HAVE to have a webcam to see me? If so WHY? They should atleast be able to see ME if I want them to... Also if they are using windows for PC platform... can they use a pc webcam and still connect with me through my isight although I am on a mac?
My second major ISSUE is.. WHY is the isight only compatible with AOL/AIM? I was told when I bought this it would be compatible with MSN Messenger for windows AND the MAC version... I have both and the isight does not show up on it... CAN ISIGHT be connected to msn messenger for MAC??? PLEASE help me!
I called APPLE tech support and they couldn't even help me! They told me to call Microsoft! Anyhow- one guy did say he was able to get his ISIGHT working with the MSN messenger for MAC platform.. do you have ANY idea how to do that?? The thing is ALL my freinds are on PC's and have MSN messenger..
ALSO- someone on mac rumors told me to look for a guy names RALPH! Said you know A LOT about mac and pc compatibility! PLEASE HELP
Bottom line - I want to use isight with msn so my msn pc friends can share webcam... I also have virtual pc software... is it easier to just get a pc webcam and do it through there? ( i tried that and it didn't work either) i need major TECH SUPPORT!
    THANK YOU

Microsoft's Messenger for Mac (MSN) does not support webcams at all.
I have found the best alternative to MSN to be aMSN with macam for the webcam driver (it is a cheap usb webcam). Both are free open source projects. I guess if you use an iSight you will not need macam.
aMSN can be found here: http://amsn.sourceforge.net/
macam can be found here: http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/
The speed is substantially faster and it is far more stable than Mercury in my experience.
The only difficulty is the camera is often shown as being "in use by another application". To counter this I start macam, then plug in the camera (or unplug and plug back in). Then I start aMSN.

  • Macbook Pro built-in iSight in Adium and MSN Messenger?

All of my contacts (about 100 or so) have MSN messenger accounts. Is there a way for me to use my built-in iSight as a webcam in Adium or MSN Messenger? It just seems pointless otherwise since I only know 2 or 3 other people with .mac or AIM accounts that I could chat to via iChat.
    Thanks

    Hi Statts,
Welcome To The Apple Discussion Pages.
You will need aMSN to Video over the MSN service.

  • Isight cam with imac 24"

Will an isight work with my new imac 24"?
Was wanting to use it with AMSN.
Is the quality of the isight better than the inbuilt Imac 24" cam?
    Thanks in advance!

as long as the camera is Firewire it will work. but whats wrong with you built-in one? i have used mine in my iMac G5 all the time(besides photobooth) nothing wrong. if you cant video chat with some they mite not have aim 5.9 or higer to use it. some IM programs have issues with iChat like Gaim(gay aim :)) and Trillion for example. whats the problem with your built in one anyways?

  • Isight firewire cam not working in iChat on Leopard.

After installing Leopard on my Powerbook G4 867 dvi, my Isight Firewire Cam is not working anymore
    in Ichat on Leopard.
Any solutions, it worked fine under Tiger.
Isight firewire cam works fine wirh Skype, Amsn , Photobooth and Quicktime.

Alright. I've done quite a bit of testing now.
My system is (as stated below,) a 12" PowerBook G4, 867 MHz, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB hard drive, Combo drive, AirPort Extreme. It was purchased in Summer 2003, and while the OS has been reloaded, it hasn't been for a long time, and at present, the OS was an install of Jaguar that was upgraded to Panther to Tigard, finally to Leopard.
I was experiencing the issue mentioned. In my case, I use a FireWire miniDV camcorder for video in iChat. It has worked fine in the iChat AV beta in Jaguar, and iChat AV in Panther and Tiger.
Upon upgrading to Leopard, I get the "Slow Network" explanation for why I cannot use video (or hosting multiperson audio, or screen sharing.)
    My research shows the following:
This occurs both on the upgraded install, and a fresh install. (To an external hard drive.)
Using Ecamm's PowerBoost allows me to use every option that isn't barred outright by lack of hardware (video effects.) This includes both "Slow Network" issues and "Insufficient CPU" issues (essentially just multiperson video.)
So my guess is that the "Slow Network" is indeed a "bug", and will be fixed by an update from Apple.

  • Isight good but useless

Isight is a good product but useless since you can't communicate with most people because most people use MSN from their PC.
I have a beautiful iMacG5 with a pretty integrated Isight, but I haven't found one personn I know to make video communication : because in Europe everybody use MSN, and I haven't found a solution. I tried aMSn, but nobody can see me, the remote windows stay white.
As far as microsoft has released MSN for mac but without video functionnality, Apple's developers have to make ichat full-compatible with MSN.
    Please Apple adress this problem.
Please do not ask me to tell my friends to use AIM,... they don't want to add another software, and I can understand.
Imagine than 95% of the population use a phone, but your own phone is not compatible with others and you will ask the other 95% of the population to get a phone like you...
P.S. Google is developping Google talk... we can communicate with google using jabber but no video ? It is supposed to use open-protocols. Does that mean that Ichat doesn't use a open-protocol for video ?

Hello Christophe. In addition to RJ's comments I offer the following.
iSight is certainly NOT useless. You can use iSight for much more than video chat. Some Applications You Can Use With iSight
If your PC pals will use ONLY MSNM, see the Microsoft Messenger (formerly MSN Messenger) section of Common PC Chat Applications and iChat. In addition to aMSn, you can try Mercury Messenger for Mac, which is linked there.
iChat AV is a client of the AIM server. MSNM is a client of the MSN Server. Apple has no control over whether these two servers can connect with each other.
This site is for users like you and me to exchange ideas to help each other. Click here if you want to send your iChat Feedback directly to Apple.
If your friends object to AIM but would consider other apps, Trillian Pro and some other cross platform options are discussed in Mac Video Chat with PCs.
If they will use ONLY MSNM, if you really need to video with them, and if Mercury Messenger for Mac does not work for you, the only remaining option I can think of is for you to get or borrow a PC to use to talk to your PC app loving PC friends. Then you can use your Mac to do the things Mac software does best (like iChat AV), and you can use your PC when you MUST run PC apps.
Google is adding new features all the time. I have heard that cross-platform video is on the way, but I have seen neither scheduled dates or even rumors of how soon.
iChat AV 3's "Jabber" feature uses Jabber's protocols, but, as mentioned above, cross-platform video has not yet been implemented. You can find more info on what you can do in the "Jabber" section of the "Common PC Chat Applications and iChat" link above.

    Hello Nicole
You can use the suggestions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to see whether iSight is causing your problem. Be sure to try with more than one user account and with some other apps, too:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
If your iSight works properly with any app in any user account you test, iSight is NOT the cause.
If you can eliminate iSight as the source of your trouble, you will need to either switch to other ways of communicating as Defcom suggests or troubleshoot other system elements that might be causing the problem. Here are some other things you can consider if you don't get better suggestions here:
    (1) Sometimes a restart restores function on internet connected applications. Shut down everything and restart your entire system including modem, router, and Mac in that order. To eliminate possible communication hardware problems, allow self-test to complete on each device before starting the next.
    (2) If you updated or installed any software immediately before the problem began, check their websites to see if there are known issues with your system configuration or installation. If not, carefully following the developers' instructions, reinstall any possible software cause, repair permissions, and try again.
If you find conflicting software, follow the instructions and uninstall to see if removing it will restore proper function to your favored communications apps.
    (3) Check the dedicated aMSN user forum at http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/ to see if your problem has already been solved by other users who post there.
    (4) aMSN is not your only choice of OS X applications. You can use either   aMSN   or   Mercury
Either can do webcam video with MSMessenger clients using OS X and your built-in iSight.
aMSN and Mercury work a bit differently, so if you cannot get aMSN working, try Mercury. You can use whichever is easiest or most reliable on your MBA.
    (5) As an alternative, because your iNtel Mac can use Boot Camp, VMware Fusion™, Parallels™, or VirtualBox to run Windows® software, you can choose which method you want to use, add the required software to your iNtel Mac (if you have not already done so), and then install and use the same Windows® Messenger application that your contacts use.
If you need more help with Boot Camp than you get here, search or post in Boot Camp discussions category.
