An add-on to force firefox switch back to default search engine in search bar

Hi,
I have a couple search engines installed in firefox's search bar. I find it extremely annoying that each time I change the search engine it remains like that even after restarting firefox. Is there any add-on that would switch back to the one that is on the top of the list (which happens to be my default search engine for navigation bar as well) every time I restart the browser?
Let me give you an example: I use duckduckgo as a default search engine for the nav bar and in the search bar. Let's say I need to find a definition for which I use wikipedia search engine. I switch to wikipedia one then. I turn off the browser and the next time I start firefox the search engine that appears in the search bar is wikipedia and I would prefer it to be duckduckgo.
I hope it isn't to vague.
cheers,
Omen

Easiest is to set the preferred default engine to the preferred search engine via the user.js file in the Firefox profile folder by copying the related user_pref() line to this file.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
You can search the <b>about:config</b> page for browser.search. to locate the pref(s) that you need.
*user_pref("browser.search.defaultenginename", "Google");
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
* Create the chrome folder (lowercase) in the <xxxxxxxx>.default profile folder if this folder doesn't exist
* Use a plain text editor like Notepad to create a (new) user.js file in this folder (the names are case sensitive)
* Make sure that you select "All files" and not "Text files" when you save the file via "Save file as" in the text editor as user.js<br />Otherwise Windows may add a hidden .txt file extension and you end up with a not working user.js.txt file

  • Firefox switches back to originating site instantaneously.

This question, I'm sure, has been asked before. I just can't seem to find the CORRECT solution.
This has been going on now for, I know, a year or more. I just get tired of trying to find the solution so I just deal with it. Well, I've got to the point that someone has had to have the same problem as I and has found the solution.
Problem: Almost(not every time), when I open a link in a new window, after the site opens, FF immediately switches back to the originating website from where I clicked the link. I then I have to reselect the the new window for FF to refocus on it.
This does not seem to be version specific only because FF has updated its versions multiple times over a year and still having the same issue.
Of course, no other browser I use does this. I've always been a FF fan so don't like to use other browsers much.
FYI; FF 31.0, WIn7x64 is up to date. All software(Adobe, DX, slvrlt, etc) is up to date as well. No Java installed.

    Hello,
To find the correct solution to your problem, we need some more non-personal information from you. Please do the following:
    # Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
#* Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click on help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''Troubleshooting Information''.
#* Type '''about:support''' into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
    # At the top of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
#Now, go back to your forum post, right-click in the reply box and select '''Paste''' from the context menu (or else click inside the reply box and press the Ctrl+V keys) to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

  • How to add Custom Search Engines to Search Bar

In the past I managed to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' (Windows Version) by just right-clicking that site's own 'search bar' and choosing 'Add to search bar'. I had no third party plugin installed to do this. It was provided by Firefox itself.
Or am I mixing up this feature with Google's 'Add Custom Search Button' ?
Anyhow, is there a way to add a 'Custom Search Engine' to Firefox's 'Search Bar' from any website, WITHOUT having to:
    * install an add-on (like: Add to Search Bar 2.0)
    * acquire search engines on 'mycroft.mozdev.org'
    * acquire search engines from 'Manage/Add Search Engines' from the drop-down menu in the search bar ?
    Thanks!

Just made this [http://www.tobtu.com/customsearch.php custom search creator] to do this since I couldn't find one either.
Although I wouldn't trust a stranger so here's the hard way:
Install Apache (lamp/wamp whatever) or get free web hosting from some site.
    blah.html:
    <a onclick="window.external.AddSearchProvider('http://localhost/blah.xml');">blah</a>
    blah.xml:<br />
    <br />
    <pre><nowiki><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <OpenSearchDescription xmlns="http://a9.com/-/spec/opensearch/1.1/">
    <ShortName>Blah</ShortName>
    <Description>Blah blah</Description>
    <Image width="16" height="16">data:image/png;base64,BlahBlahBase64AndUriEncoded%2B%2F</Image>
    <Image width="16" height="16">http://blah/OrJustAUrl.png</Image>
    <Url type="text/html" method="get" template="https://blah/?blah={searchTerms}"/>
    </OpenSearchDescription></nowiki></pre>
Now go to http://localhost/blah.html and click the link.

  • Cant add or change search engines in search bar

When I try to add search engines on the search bar via the Manage Search Engines... option it takes me to:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search-tools/
which is just a list of 5 search addons that have nothing to do with adding search engines to the search bar.
My main problem is the default google that is provided:
    http://www.google.com/firefox
    I want google.com not google.com/firefox

The link to the mycroft site in the post by pelagos restricts the search engines to the UK.
The main entry to the search engine site is: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/
To qualify what you might be seeking, use this link: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html

  • Why does firefox switch back to bookmarks after I am on a web page ?

This happens every time I go from selecting a bookmark to that page. It just annoying enough for me to yank my hair out, if i had any. Thanks, Max

I have two antivirus programs on my computer. The default windows thing and MalwareBytes (which I perform a full scan with everyday) and I still have the problem.
Hate to be a "problem child" but could anyone post an answer to this problem that isn't something that is obvious that should be done like resetting firefox or check for a virus or mess with the tabs options which I have tried every combination of the options that could be tried.
I mean does anyone else anywhere have this same problem? What I don't understand is that I posted this question two days ago and it doesn't look like anyone else has asked for help with this same issue.
What I really don't understand is why I can't find out anything doing an internet search using "why does Firefox keep returning to the webpage i am currently on when i open a new webpage" and so far no one has suggested something I have already tried.
If Mozilla had some kind of phone number or email contact info then I could probably get this whole thing solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why does my spry accordian look good in live view and switch back to default in safari

i am new to dreamweaver and have started my first page-
step one inserted a picture as a background
step 2 inserted a spry accordian and have spent hours trying to configure it - my dreamweaver wont allow me to type any information in the design view so i worked out how to get around that in the code - so i put in the labels - changed the font
then i got rid of any color by adding the hex value #0.0 (transparent) in the spryaccordian.css page  - which has worked really well in the live view ( and works in opera) but when i check it in safari it has reverted back to the default settings - it hasnt even kept the font settings
i would also like to put quite a lot of information in the content panels (pictures, subscriber list, links ect, essentially whole pages) is this possible
    hoping someone can help me

I use Safari in my imac with Google as my search engine. Recently, Bing took over. Extensions still shows Google as default search engine. Search starts as Google but switches to Bing. How do I get rid of Bing, go back to Google?

    Hey ravenbird1,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use a specific search engine.
Safari 7 (Mavericks): Search the web
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH17150
To set the default search engine, choose Safari > Preferences, then click General.
If you are having problems with extensions you can uninstall and reinstall the extension.
Safari 7 (Mavericks): Install and update Safari extensions

  • Why does the website bar no longer show on firefox and why am i no longer able to get a search engine and firefox symbol/logo on each tab i open.

All the other versions of firefox used to have a website bar on the top and you used to be able to open a new tab and have multiple websites open at a time and on each one you opened get a firefox symbol/logo and a search engine or website bar however that's no longer the case I don't know if its the new version or not. I used to also be able to do a search and open multiple websites in multiple tabs however that's no longer the case I don't know if its a bug or if its something new with firefox or newer versions.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
    * If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
    * If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
    * If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

  • Firefox(20.0.1) is ignoring my proxy server for google searches from website and the search box. It works for all other search engines and chrome/safari.

    firefox(20.0.1)
squid (port 3128) and dansguardian (port 8080) not running in transparent mode.
I am applying blacklists and a custom url regex to apply "safe=vss", this works for all browsers and all search engines except firefox using google search engine.
Search engines tested (bing, yahoo, norton, ask, amazon, avg, ebay) - all work.
Links from the search results are blocked by content filter, but search results still appear and google images are still shown. This does not happen in Chrome(23.0.1271.97), IE9(9.0.8), Opera(12.14) or Safari(5.1.7) with the same settings.
No log entry appears in Dansguardian access.log implying proxy settings are being ignored for just this combination.

I can't think of a reason that one particular webpage would behave differently from all the others, i.e., if you are starting at google.com and running a search using the form in the page, I'm not aware of any reason for Firefox to handle that specially just because it's Google.
Does it make a difference if you disable JavaScript when using Google? If that yields the results you expect, perhaps Google's XMLHttpRequest AJAX traffic is bypassing your filters?
The search bar has its own code, so someone would need to look at that to see whether/why it bypasses your proxy if the above hypothesis does not apply.

  • I recently upgraded to 5.0 and one of my add-ons was disabled (incompatible), can I (how do I ) switch back to the previous version of Firefox?

My Turbo-Saver (from Upromise.com) Add-on is incompatible with Firefox 5.0 and was disabled when I upgraded. i want to switch back to the previous version of Firefox where it is compatible.

  • How do I switch back to 3.6? I use Norton 360 and it doesn't work with Firefox 4. I have uninstalled 4 and try to reinstall 3.6 from my downloads but it deleted 3.6 exe when it installed 4. I WANT 3.6 BACK.

Norton isn't supported on Firefox 4. I don't trust ANY web browser that I can't use Norton on. I had no complaints with it when I had Firefox 3.6. I want to reinstall 3.6 but can't. I have looked all over for a download but every one comes back to Firefox 4.

Symantec need to update their Firefox add-ons so that they are compatible with Firefox 4. They have indicated that for Norton 360 they plan to release an update to Norton 360 to support Firefox 4 in early May - http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100720113635EN&ln=en_US
To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.

  • Firefox has taken over as the default browser ... I dont want to use firefox, how do I switch back?? Thank you

I downloaded Firefox to try it recently. Today I noticed that every time I tried to open Facebook it was acting as the "default" browser. I'm having trouble using Firefox and would like to switch back to my original browser.

Firebug has development versions that should work in Firefox 4 beta builds. Try the latest version (1.6X.ob1) available from http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.6X/
This is a beta version of Firebug.
For other add-ons marked as incompatible, you can install the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/15003 Add-on Compatibility Reporter], this will enable all of your add-ons and you can test to see if they work. If the add-ons do not work you can disable them. Note that the current release version of Firebug will not work, you will need to use the beta version.

  • New firefox installed - didn't give me the option of not installing it before telling me that (essential to me) add-ons were incompatible. How can I get the old firefox version back?

I would not have installed the new firefox if I had known in advance that two of my essential add-ons would no longer work. Now I want the old firefox version back so I can continue to function until the add-ons are updated. Suggestion: when you notify user that add-ons are incompatible, give the option of reverting to an earlier firefox version.

Firefox now always stores the old session, and you can access it by going to the History menu and selecting "Restore Previous Session"
If you want Firefox to display the message to save the session, it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # Locate the preference '''browser.tabs.warnOnClose''', if its value is set to '''false''', double-click on it to change its value to '''true'''
    # Repeat this for these 3 preferences '''browser.warnOnQuit''', '''browser.warnOnRestart''' and '''browser.showQuitWarning'''
If you always open the last set of tabs, an alternative approach is this:
    # Click the orange Firefox button, then select options to open the options window
    # Go to the General panel
    # Change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • I switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox and was so happy. Then I took the prompt and converted to Firefox 4.0 and now my computer is so slow it is almost unbearable. How do I switch back to Firefox 3 or some earlier version to get my speed back?

It takes a long time for the computer to warm up and start working, maybe 30 seconds. Just to open an email can take 10 seconds. This is the kind of delay I was experiencing on Internet Explorer before I switched to Firefox 3. It is particularly slow if I am opening a photo attachment. It also can be slow just moving from one tab to another. Help!

  • Firefox was fast when I first started using. Now, very slow to open and freezes often. Frequent message is "Warning-unresponsive script". Do I need to switch back to Internet Explorer?

Switched from Internet Explorer because seemed slow. Firefox was fast at first. Then upgraded to Firefox 4 and frequently have trouble opening. Sometimes page doesn't open, or is very slow. If I try to open again I will get Mozilla Firefox Unresponsive or a message that say "Warning-Unresponsive Script". Often have to restart and do the whole thing again. Don't really want to switch back to Internet Explorer, but getting tired of taking a half hour to get into my emails!

I am having the same problem, but not sure what's causing the slow down. Restarting in safe mode fixes the performance problem... but disabling all plug ins and extensions in normal mode (and restarting firefox) still shows the bug. Any ideas?
