Animation software and iBooks Author?

I am looking at attempting to make an iBook with iBooks Author.
I am quite an experienced Mac user, but iBooks Author is all new to me.
I want my iBook to include various specific and tailored animations, so is there any recommended software to create these animations in, which would still maintaining the professional and crisp look that such animations should have, rather than having to employ an animator?
Many Thanks.

It may be useful to to  start with whatever file types are acceptable for use with iBA and format your animations accordingly.
These links are in the iBookstore Asset Guidelines v 5.1   which will give you more information  if/when you download it.

  • Different ISBN for iBooks standard, and iBooks author?

    Hey guys,
Submitting regular iBook and iBooks author edition. It was suggested by Apple to use 'Extended" in the title, to clarify that the two editions are different. Cool beans, BUT, do I need an individual ISBN for each version?
    Big thanks for your time.

An iBA book to the store does not carry an ISBN(13) requirement.

How can I add page turn animation to my iBooks Author 2.2 file? Can I add html / a plugin?

I concur with Tom. That feature is not available with iBooks. If the page turning effect is important, you could consider developing a fixed layout Epub 3 instead.

  • Edge Animate and iBooks Author

    Hello,
Let me start by saying that I love Edge Animate! It is easy to learn with plenty of support and examples. However, I am having difficulty publishing my file to iBooks Author. After publishing my animation file, when I drop it into iBooks Author it will not animate. In this particular animation I use GreenSock GSAP exclusively. Thinking it might be my file, I published one of Adobe's example files and it does not animate either in iBooks. My animation is below:
    https://files.acrobat.com/preview/9f94f319-56d2-43f6-a8b1-ff9acbc2cd1a

Ok Sarah, I'm trying to solve the problem slicing the pictures and it seems the animation get more speed but I have to slice more.
In meantime, I have a question: why if I use the 1MB size picture in an animation without symbol it works smoothly on Safari-iPad but, if I "wrap" the same image in a symbol, the animation is ver very slower?
    Many thanks for your help!!

  • Ibooks 2 and iBooks Author!

    Hi guys!!
I have some questions about the iBooks 2 Store and the iBooks Author, please help me further with them.
    1. Can anyone post self-made books for sale or for free download in iBooks 2 Store? (For example, students at a school that has made books on a topic, they learned about?)
    2. Is Apple strict with photos and other material taken from the internet, google or books etc? (Must every materials be selv produced?)
    3. How long does it take to get a book published in iBooks 2, so other students and teachers can download the same book?
    4. Does someone have a guide on how to publish the book in iBooks 2 Store?
    Thank you in advance!

1.) See iBooks Author: Publishing and distribution FAQ - Support- but, yes, anyone...once they have completed the required agreements and been accepted into the program. There are separate programs for 'paid' and 'free'. You might want to utilize the method of putting free books on your own server and not going thru the store.at all, if the audience is limited to other students in your school, as an example.
2.) Of course You are expected to be able to show proof-of-right-to-use should Apple ask.
3.) If you go through the store it can from a few to several days. 'Text' books for edu can take longer.
4.) When you sign up, you are able to download guides for iTunes Producer, which is the tool used to submit books.
    Good luck

  • Applescript and iBooks Author?

    Hi,
Is anyone using Applescript to automate iBooks Author (IBA)? Since IBA doesn't have the same "track changes" convenience as Microsoft Word, we're seriously looking at automating the conversion from Word to IBA documents. I opened IBA's Scripting Dictionary within Script Editor, it doesn't look like there's good AppleScript support yet. Anyone have good IBA scripting resources?
    Thanks,
    Ted

If you are in need  of "track changes" it might be best to create text in Pages first and then bring your final drafts into IBA.  I agree with your assessment of the AppleScript dictionary in IBA and hope to see improvements in the future.  Specifically, I'd like to be able to automate an accessibility inventory that identified issues to address.  We'd first need to develop a standard like WAGA 2.0 by W3C for web sites.

  • The new photo app and iBooks Author

I updated to Mac Os-x 10.1.3 and when opening iBook Author, in the media picker under photos the new photo app is missing to pick photos.
Does anyone have a solution? or do I need to be patient for an update.
    Brgds, Jelger

OK some progress to report as a temporary fix.
It looks like when you install the Photo update the relationship between iBooks Author and your photos is broken because the media pane shows no images.  I had the same issue as Jelger.
However, iPhoto is still in your applications folder so I tried opening it (as I prefer the ability to organise photos in the old program).  To my surprise the act of opening iPhoto seemed to restore a link with Author.  So now, when I open Author I get access restored to my iPhoto library and can use my old working method.
Of course, this won't last for ever.  Apple will not support iPhoto any more so someday an update might affect it.  Also, if Apple bring out a fix to link Author and the new Photo this would break the link I have re-established with iPhoto.  I'm also concerned that an update linking Author to Photo will make navigation more difficult.  iPhoto has a natural structure for finding images to  put in books whereas Photo does not.
Anyway, for the time being everything works again.....  I hope this helps.

  • IA writer and iBook author

Can I import copy from iA writer to iBook author without to much faffing about?
    Thanks

The only supported import options are Word and Pages, AFAIK.
You can of course copy paste text via the clipboard.

  • Snow Leopard and iBooks author - why no go?

Yet again a new software product will not instal on a Snow Leopard machine. Is there any way we can instal and use? If not why not? surely its powerful enough to run this . .

This is incredible! Ever worst if it is possible to install it bypassing its OS restrictions. Apple released iWork '09 in January 2009 and was perfectly compatible with OSX Tiger, replaced by Leopard in October 2007 and is also compatible with PPC Macs!. And Apple says that a program released 6 months after the replacement of Snow Leopard is not compatible?. Something is changing in its politics about backward-compatiblility.

  • EPub and iBooks Author

I have written a book. I have it in iBooks and ePub format. I want to upload both the formats to iTunes iBookStore. I have already uploaded iBook format. But what I want to do is upload both iBook and ePub in the same book. Like for example, if the iPhone user downloads the book, he/she should get a ePub file while iPad and Mac user should get the iBook file. How should I do that?
Link to my book is here: https://itun.es/us/G3CvZ

That would require two versions/books, not one hybrid, which you can't do in the store, sorry.

I would like to embed interactive widgets in iBooks using iBookAuthor. The widgets in question started life in Java but GWT has allowed them to be converted to javascript and to run on web pages (for example, http://softoption.us/content/node/437 scroll to the bottom). In theory, iBookAuthor can bring in most html5, and much javascript. The technique is to wrap the html in a folder, with 2 extra files, a plist and a default png and then change the extension of the folder to ‘.wdgt’. This is the technique for making Dashboard widgets for the Mac, and Apple even have the Dashcode software to do it. So what you really do is to make a Dashboard widget, then iBookAuthor can import it.  So far, so good. And some  folk have been doing this, for example http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9242432.htm http://www.panophoto.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10417&p=158330#p158423 However, if you start with GWT and create a single page with one button and a Hello World, compile it, and get the WAR file (I use Eclipse here)… the Safari browser and others will run it properly (even on an iPad). Then if you wrap it, a proper Dashboard widget is created, which runs properly on a Mac. Then if you go to iBookAuthor and put a custom widget in the Text, then drag it in. It is accepted by the text and shown as being there. However, if you use Preview to look at it on an iPad, it is gone (or was never there in the first place). Anyone any ideas on this? [And iBook Author seems to give no warnings.] The widget is at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46713473/Test6.wdgt.zip I have bells and whistles that I’d like to get into an iBook!
    Thanks for any insights.
    Martin

I do have a little to add, which might help someone. Indeed, opening a blank page and dragging the widget straight in seems good in difficult cases. But, actually, I was also able to insert successfully from the Toolbar especially to blank pages. So, it may have been something to do with the columns and stuff like that. Anyway back then the insertion would show in iBooks Author but not in the Preview on the iPad. I moved on to actual Google Web Toolkit output javascript. Basically I had three at hand to try: a Hello World with a button which went straight it, one of moderate complexity, (for example with a built in Lisp interpreter), which also went straight in, and finally a more complex one that initially was rejected by iBook Author. Author complained that there was an unsupported media file (of course, Author does not tell you which one it is, that would be too easy). [Remember, this was a proper working Dashboard widget which could be installed on a Mac]. Among other things I had read remarks about .gif files. When looking through the GWT war directory at the actual javascript etc files, I noticed there were two gifs there one called ‘clear.cache.gif ‘  and a second one called  ‘0F89659FF3F324AE4116F700257E32BD.cache.gif’. (Now, there is obfuscation so the numbers here may be different from case to case.) The clear.cache.gif did not seem to be anything special. But the other one is an animation. It is three little boxes that twinkle (rather like a waiting spinning cursor).  So, I opened that file and saved it to itself (that picks the top frame of the animation and saves only that, leaving you with an unanimated gif). The resulting widget drags and drops into iBooks Author (and seems to work properly at a quick glance). So, if you are having trouble with ‘unsupported media files’ converting animated gifs into unanimated gifs might help in some cases.

  • Completely frustrated by iBooks Author and iBooks

I have been writing in iBooks Author for a while to produce a book. I loved what was shown by Apple as possibilities. My book contains a lot of diagrams, the source material are vector images (SVG or PDF). These images are sometimes large and are unreadable, unless the user can zoom in and pan/scroll around.
Given that iOS is PDF-based and that HTML5 has SVG I assumed (mistakenly) that iBooks and iBooks Author would support resolution-independence vector images. Indeed, it will accept PDF often, but on creation of the .ibook, it produces low resolution bitmaps. There is no decent way to create image viewing that enables a user to look at a diagram that cannot be read on page size of an iPad2. Interactive Image will allow larger images (up to 4096pixels wide in landscape mode), but to let the user zoom you need fake viewpoints that point somewhere and in all, creating something where the user can pan/scroll/zoom is ugly and a pain.
I have been looking at HTML5 widgets to see if one can get around this. But here too, iBooks Author seems not to allow SVG in those (just displays empty, so does iBooks Author kills the SVG on export from .iba to .ibooks?). SO, I hoped the standards of iOS (PDF and HTML5) woul dsolve any problem, but iBooks Author seems to make sure it does not work.
I am so frustrated that I am close to giving up. iBooks Author and Ibooks need (for me):
    - handling vector-images (SVG and PDF) (come on, Apple, how can you be so slow with supporting resolution independence, especially given Retina iPads?)
    - the ability to let the user pan/scroll over large  images that can be zoomed in/out
And I am not talking about stupid things like not being able to replace an image inside a picture element with a new image without losing the picture element and having to manually redo all the links to it.
It has been more than a half year since Apple released iBooks Author. Unless I find a way to let the reader investigate larger diagrams, preferably interactive ones, e.g. created as a HTML5 widget with SVG objects in it, or unless Apple delivers a product with less problems bugs and such, my project needs to move away from iBooks.

Thanks, but I am not going to try anything else. I have lost any trust in iBooks Author that I can get this right.
First, it means buying Keynote just for this experiment and besides that means that my images all end up in a widget (I have many inlines now) which will also not be exported properly in PDF.
I am unhappy enough that I have to buy Pages to save my project (if I had known this in advance, I would probably have written the book in TeX and try to find a decent paper publisher) and lose all the nice interaction ideas I had.
If iBooks and iBooks Author still exist a year after I have finished my old fashioned book, maybe. So far, this looks like another beta-never-to-be-kept-alive-in-a-decent-way product attempt at Apple. Stuff gone like iWeb or iDVD (colleague bought his Mac, used iMove to create a Movie and wanted to create a DVD. Turns out he needs to shell out $99 for Roxio to do that. Not a happy camper).

  • Ibook author loading, save, open and update issue

When we create the ibook author file with 30 pages the systme gets too slow, since it took cache file within the recovery folder.  Also when it take more time while save, open and update process. Curent file size is 169 MB (Minimac 10.7 with 2GB RAM and ibook author version is 1.1)
Can you any one investigate this issue and help me how to remove this cache file and make the ibook author file is fast?

I'd suggest to upgrade the ram in your mini to the maximum - low cost and the best thing you can do to improve performance for all apps.
The cache file's purpose is to make things faster....but if a book is corrupted there may be issues using it for editing. You may need to remove resources and re-add to fix - that or make a new book from start.
    See this Apple Tech Note:

    Good luck.

  • How to make a widget like "gorongosa landscapes", featured in ibooks author gallery of widgets?

    Dear all,
I would like to make a widget, similar to "Gorongosa landscapes" demo in author gallery of widgets:
    http://www.apple.com/ibooks-author/gallery.html
    Any idea?
    Best,
    M

The easiest way woud be a gallery, second keynote. But in the thumbnails only show up with the gallery widget at top or bottom.
If you want nearly the same as in the "Gorongosa landscapes" do it in html.
Very good and quite easy is Hype. In their blog is a tip how to get an animation working in iBooks Author.
