Announcing my divorce from Nokia or "DO NOT BUY TH...

After owning the debacle that is the NoKia N97 for several months, I felt a longing to return to simpler, easier to use and more reliable but feature rich handsets that Nokia used to be very well known for, and were actually pretty good at making. Remember that word 'reliable' for now, as I'll come back to it. But basically, every time I had to pull out the heavy, bulky, temperamental N97 from my pocket, and wait for its glitchy, lazy software to figure out what I was trying to do at that moment in time, I became more and more resentful of it and realized that sometimes, "smart phones" are anything but. I longed for the simplicity and beauty of Nokia's 6230,or 6230i, or 6233 days, just as a few examples, when phones did everything you could want them for and didn't require several Phds to operate. In my search, I came to rest upon the Nokia 6700 classic.
I'll confess - I was hooked almost from the fist look. It's stainless steel body; it's cool, classy candbybar form with rounded edges and its simple, yet striking front plate communicated a seriousness and promised a robust, straightforward experience. A quick glance through the feature list and I was hooked. I had to have it. I had dreams of abandoning my N97 to my underwear drawer, possibly only to be liberated in times of desperate need when a back-up handset might be helpful for a trip, but determined not to sell it to anyone, as I knew in my heart, I could not wish the evil of an N97 on my own worst enemy. In one amazing spec sheet, Nokia had promised redemption with the 6700 classic, and I was eager to give it to them.
To be fair, I was warned. Even though I had committed to buying, I raked the internet for reviews. "Temperamental" they warned. "Unreliable" they screamed! "Daft" they exclaimed. I read them all but was unmoved - mine would be the exception, rather than the rule. Mine would defy the expectations, and work well without glitch or incident, for after all, this was Nokia, and Nokia could not let me down so utterly, so completely, so unremorsefully, so quickly in succession, with two different products... not me; a fervant, loyal, reliable supporter and purchaser of their products for the last 10 years, without interruption... This would not happen. I willed it.
I've owned the phone for less two months, and here's the facts: before it just stopped working, the phone would get impossibly hot during phone calls using the headset. It would routinely drop calls for no discernable reason, headset on or not, and when it was offended by my reaction to it doing so, would actually turn itself OFF during phone calls to drive the point home. The phone doesn't have a 3.5mm jack (which I knew when I bought it) so is not terribly good for listening to music or plugging into a car radio, and for reasons which shall always escape me but which shall likely fascinate me to the point of distraction till the day I die, Nokia made it so that the radio could not be played over the loudspeaker!!!!
So, you can't play the radio over the loudspeaker.... and it doesn't work very well, for MAKING PHONE CALLS!!!!
Then, about a month ago, it just turned off, and hasn't come back on since. Despite everything I've tried. And tried. And tried. And keep trying... sigh.
So I've had no choice... Back to the underwear drawer.... and the N97...
Oh, Nokia, my once beloved Nokia, whyfore art thou a hopeless gaggle of idiot-savants and social maladajusts? Where hast your dependability gone? Why hast your basic five-year-old-knows-better-by-now-common-good-sense abandoned thee? Oh my beloved, would that I could flog thee to within an inch of thy corporate life until the madness that has seized thee is over, and thy commitment to me, thy customer, was once more paramount in thy "threatened-giant-addled-brain"....
But alas.... not. So I'm quitting Nokia, after 10 years as a loyal customer. I've owner about 15 or more Nokias since I began, and I've just had so many bad experiences of quality issues in the last two years that I just no longer have faith in the company, or its products. It's painful, because I like the company, what it used to stand for and have always found its products to be the most attractive made by anyone, but I just can't keep spending huge amounts of money on phones that don't actually work. Siiiiighh... I don't know what I'll move on to next, I just know it won't be a Nokia product, and frankly, I don't really care. There's not much joy in it for me anyway. Not now.
Oh... and whatever you do, wherever you are: DO.NOT.BUY.THE.NOKIA.6700.CLASSIC. Under ANY circumstances. On pain of death. Just DON'T.DO.IT. Don't accept it as a gift. Don't buy it used. Don't get it. Just don't. Stay well clear.
With much respect and affection for you all,
Axel

  • Game from Nokia software - Certificate not found

Hello, I wonder if anybody could advise me on this. I have purchased a Freecell game from Nokia software online shop (registered to NOkia club before) and received the service message to my Nokia6111. I connected to WAP, but when I tried to download it, there was a message: Certificate not found on SIM card, neither in the phone. I contacted support of that page and they advised to change the settings which I have seen already in these discussions - software download all and online certificate off. However, this should be done in Application manager, but Nokia 6111 doesnt seem to have this in menu. I went through all the possible setting, but did not find anything similar about software download...The lady from customer support seems to be finished with me and I threw away 4 euros. I know it is not that much, but just for the principle...company as Nokia...
If anybody could advise, I would be really thankful.

You should have an option to manually enter the qualifying product's serial number.

  • Isync transfers data to Ical from Nokia 5800, but not the other way round

When I sync my Nokia 5800 using Isync, diary entries from my phone are moved onto my Mac, but entries made on my Mac are not transferred to my phone. This leaves my phone calendar without any entries. Am I doing something wrong here, or is this a bug? Does anyone know how to transfer this data back into my phone? My contacts swap both ways no problem. I have installed the Nokia 5800 app. Many thanks.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. As the Nokia 5800 is not natively supported by iSync you must be using an iSync Plugin, so I'd advise contacting the author of the plugin - it may be buggy and need fixing.

  • SMS sent from Nokia Suite is not saved

PC Nokia Suite (7.1.18.0) seems to be working fine on both Bluetooth and USB Cable with my Nokia 6300 (FW is V07.21).
EXCEPT, whenever I send SMSs from the Nokia Communications Centre, they are not saved anywhere.  I assume that they should save in NCC and immediately be replicated back to my phone, but that is not happening.  So I have no record of anything I have sent, unless I key it in onto my phone.
All off the other categories of SMS (Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, Archive) seem to replicate OK between phone and NCC.  Why not the Sent messages?
And yes, I am sure that the messages are being sent - that was the first thing I checked
What am I (or the SW) doing wrong?
    Thanks

unfortunately I'm also suffering from lack of this feature. however I'm not sure which other mobile phone can do something like requested by author (and me ).
Suppose it has something to do with the way desktop software works with GSM phones, it probably just sends series of AT commands to GSM phone modem, initiating sending of message. Saving of message into "Sent" box may be not implemented into standard AT command set (but here I'm only guessing).
I've happened to work with old Siemens phone and it behaved almost same way, i.e. messages were sent but not saved in "Sent" box. However there was a trick - desktop software had not only "Send" but also "Save" button, and pressing of this button saved messages in "Drafts" box. So if I needed absolutely message to be saved in "Sent" box, I prepared messages and saved them to "Drafts". Later I should take my phone and send messages manually from phone, so at least I saved efforts on typing, but had to work from both PC and phone interfaces to send message.
I'm not sure if any "alternative" software for Nokia phones (like Oxygen Phone Manager) have this capability, but if you look at this screen http://www.oxygensoftware.com/en/products/opm2/images/SMSPictureMessage.gif you shall see there "Save" button which may possibly (?) implement same functionality.

  • Transferred route from Nokia Maps to phone not the...

I planed a route on the Nokia Maps site with a couple of waypoints and some options (no toll roads, no motorways) to get it the way I wanted.
Then I did the synchronization of favorites on the phone and the route was there. But when I tried to open the route on the phone the "Calculating route" message appears and the route that shows up is COMPLETELY different from the one on the Nokia Maps: different roads, strange ways to get to the waypoints, ... In short I can not use this route on the phone as I would like.
Is there a way to transfer complete route AS IS from Nokia Maps to the phone Maps application?

Well I don't get it - why is there a need to do the route calculation twice? I would expect that once the route is calculated on a PC (including the directions) it would be transferred in some kind of way to the device as is (like transferring gpx files to the GPS device).
Anyway, even if it is so that the device recalculate the route once again I really don't understand why the same route gets completely different shape on the device then on the PC/Web. One would expect the calculation from the same provider (Nokia Maps) yields the same results regardless of where it is executed.

  • Why is it that Apple cannot get their bluetooth technology right? The3GS does not even find the handsfree kit, computer etc? While a cheap $59 phone can do that from Nokia? why don't Apple get their act together?

Why is it that Apple can't get their bluetooth technology right? I cannot connect to my Honda Civic VTI-L 2011 model using the bluetooth? While I can do that using my cheap Nokia phone ($59.00)? I shelled out $380.00 and this is what I get...
It will not even connect to my HP Elitebook 8540P??? Before anyone starts, this is what i have already done:
    Installed the latest OS 5.1
Switched on the bluetooth on both device
And they are next to one another
So don't post here saying things that I have already done. Used the Bluetooth technology frequently so those carp from Apple about making sure devices are discoverable blah blah blah...don't even go there.
Will not buy another Iphone and will tell everyone that I know of that it is a piece of overhyped ****.

"What Apple did say that it has Bluetooth Technology,"
It does have bluetooth technology.  It will connect to may types of devices via bluetooth.
using any other phones, the Bluetooth Technology means that you can connect to other devices with Bluetooth Technology."
Iphone connect to other devices as well. I connect via bluetooth all the time to my car.  Like any other phone, it does not connect to ALL devices for ALL purposes.
You seem to have very little understanding of bluetooth technology.  Perhpas you should read up on bluetooth before you begin a rant based on your ignorance of the subject.

  • Any way of getting the Nokia 5800 to NOT announce ...

OK, bit of a strange request this. Since Nokia maps became free to use for driving with spoken directions, I've decided to use it again on my 5800 rather than another piece of Nav software that I had.
Whilst it seems to work great, my only problem seems to be that it announces the directions over Bluetooth. As my phone is connected to my car via a built in Bluetooth kit (parrot), when ever I activate routing with spoken directions, the phone takes over the audio and mutes the stereo (with "PHONE" displayed on my factory head unit). The stereo is then muted for the whole journey or until I exit from Nokia maps. So it seems my only options are driving without music, or mute the 5800 and route without spoken directions ?
Is the any way or setting that would allow the spoken directions to be done purely via the 5800's built in speakers (which are pretty loud anyway), rather than taken over the stereo ?
    Many thanks.

Hi, don't think it's possible to do what you want, however do you really need sat nav for the whole journey ? It's no solution, and I have used many sat nav systems (I work in the motor trade) and Nokia Maps is pretty good. However once the 'Novelty' wears off, do you really need sat nav for the whole journey, unless you're a delivery driver on an unfamiliar route, most people don't really need sat nav till the last couple of miles, if you're on a long journey, it will nearly always involve a long drive on a major highway, where there is no need for directions. I normally use sat nav for the last couple of miles to find a specific address, or maybe  just before an unfamiliar city, I know this isn't answering your question, but you rarely need sat nav for the 'whole' journey !
    Good Luck

  • N73 Update - Reply from Nokia Head Office

Please find below the reply I got from Nokia after sending an email to the Chief Executive. It remains to be seen if anything changes.
"With regard to your recent email to Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, I would like to apologize for our delayed response to your E-mails send to us on 11.11 and 20.11. We recently have had technical problems with our UK E-mail support system which have now been resolved. Due to this problem, your mail sent on 11.11 did not reach our support specialists. According to our Nokia helpline team you should have on 22.11. received two email responses from them already. However, I also wanted to personally follow-up the issues you raised in your email.
Thank you for providing us constructive and valuable feedback regarding our customer support and Nokia Software update service in the web. We apologize the confusion created on our communication about N73 software updates. We have gone through in detail the information shared in Nokia web support pages, both in NSU and in discussion forum and recognized that there is room for improving and clarifying the software update related communication and will be implementing a number of communication improvement steps during next weeks.
Concerning software updates for N73, there are actually several N73 software versions existing for different operator networks. We are continuously releasing more and more N73 software versions to Nokia Software Updater (NSU). Unfortunately, the version for your network was not available during the time you tried to update your N73 and the response you received from NSU was not sufficiently explaining this. We are working to improve the visibility to the different available software versions, both within NSU application and through our discussion board.
You can check again today if your N73 software version is now available from the system. In case it's not yet in NSU you can check again in few days to see if it's available then. Alternatively can contact your nearest Nokia Authorized Service Point where a Nokia engineer will be able to confirm the latest version of the software for your device and give you an free-of-charge software update if needed. Your nearest Nokia Authorized Service Point is as follows:
    Name: Intercity Mobile Communications
    Tel: 01216437373
Should you choose to wait for new SW for your N73 to be available NSU you can also email me your product code number (found from N73 type label located under the battery) and current SW version number (found by typing *#0000# at main menu page) so that we can notify you over email once new software becomes available.
Please don't hesitate to contact us again if you have any further questions."

For the record, I don't think I am able to upgrade to the current software version.
My phone model is 05411312 (N73 on UK T-Mobile), and NSU won't let me update beyond v. 3.0704.1.0.1
I really want to be able to upgrade, I'm quite annoyed that I can't add all of the amazing new features that Nokia announced for S60 phones a month ago because of this - I want to try the official MSN client, Music Store, etc. I wouldn't have bothered trying to upgrade the software if it wasn't for trying to add these features.

  • How to get the most from Nokia Support Discussions

This forum is a community of users of Nokia products and services from around the world who share their experiences and help people to solve problems. I've been using this forum for a couple of years now, I originally joined because I work in telecomms and I was looking for answers to a few issues that I was experiencing, and like many of the regular members, I've been coming here ever since. There is a really good crowd here, and it is often fun to read the boards as well as informative.
If you have a problem, if nobody else can help, and if you can find us (it's not hard, Discussions all over Google whenever you search for something Nokia-related), then maybe you can hire: The D Team!
The communityThis is a peer-to-peer community, you are usually dealing with people who have an interest in mobile technology, albeit with a particular preference to Nokia, who can help on a wide range of questions - the advantage that we have as a community is that many users have experience of a range of devices and accessories, so you can often get help here about issues concerning Nokia products being used with products from other companies that even Nokia itself cannot offer. There has also recently been a presence of Nokia staff (their usernames are shown in green) who are also helping users on the forum in their own time.
Unlike many forums that we all use regularly, this is an official forum owned and run by Nokia, not the creation of amateur enthusiasts like you and I, so they are much more strict about behaviour than other forums, and the moderators will remove anything that is offensive or disrespectful to other users, or which may cause offence to users of a sensitive nature. Basically, you should treat other users the way you could treat another member of the public in a public place - too many people take advantage of the anonymity offered by the internet to behave in a way that they would not normally do.
This forum is not a source of official support from Nokia, for that you have to call or e-mail from the "Contact us" link. Most of us are just normal consumers like you, therefore we don't have information on when products, services, software updates etc. will be available so it's futile to ask. Nokia doesn't even publish this information in most cases, so even the Nokia employee members probably wouldn't be able to answer these sorts of questions even if they do have the information.
Tips for getting your question answered:
     (1) Search firstSomebody else may already have posted the same question, so you can save yourself time by checking first if the answer you need is already published on the forum.
    (2) Choose the right boardPeople are online at different times, we may be taking a break from our work, relaxing at home after a meal, flicking back to the forum whilst doing other surfing on the 'net or anything else, and people will look in boards where they have a specific personal interest so, for example, if you have a problem playing a video on your N96 use the Imaging and videos board in the Ovi and Mobile Media section or if you have a problem installing themes or applications on your 6220 Classic, use the Phone Applications under Software. Posting these questions on the Nseries and S60 smartphones board might see them get lost amongst lots of technical questions about the phone itself, you have a better chance of getting an answer by choosing the right place to ask it.
    (3) Write a clear titleSpeaking for myself, I don't have time to read everything on the boards, so I look for topics that I might be able to answer; therefore don't just put the subject as a phone model number or the name of an application or users might just pass over your post without opening it to read. For example, a title like "Can't get GPS signal in 5800" is much more likely to catch the attention of an experienced GPS user or a 5800 user and get the question answered quicker.
    (4) Explain your problem clearlyPhones and the software that we use in them and with them grow ever more complex, just saying "I can't send an SMS" or "Mr camera isn't working" does not give any information with which an experienced user can help you to troubleshoot. Whatever the case, explain exactly what you are trying to achieve, what you tried, and describe what happened, for example: did an application shut itelf down? Did the phone freeze? Was there an error message, and if so what was it? All of this will help other users to identify what is going wrong for you and the less questions they have to ask you back, the quicker they might help you.
Tips for making the right impression:
     (5) Use normal textWRITING ENTIRELY IN CAPITALS does not convey a sense of urgency, in internet communities it is perceived as shouting or other generally agressive behaviour, so it will not win the hearts and minds of the people whose help you need. Also, using large characters or bright colours may look nice to you, but too much text written in very large, bold or colourful letters can simply fill the screen unnecessarily and is not always any easier to read, so it can also put people off from helping you. Use these features when you need to highlight a particular point, not all of the time.  (6) Resize imagesIf you are embedding a picture in your post, resize it so that it fits into the frame of the normal page. A full screenshot of your PC or a megapixel+ picture will stretch the borders of the page so far that people have to scroll left and right repeatedly to read not only your post, but the entire page of the thread that it is on, and just as above, if you make it difficult for others to read the thread, they could miss some information or just pass over it altogether. If you want to share a large image, you can also add it as an attachment to the post so that people can view it when they choose without impacting on the display of the page for everybody.
    (7) Pleeeeaaaaazzzzeeee don't do thisFar from making most users take pity on you and try to help you, this kind of thing can be just as bad as all capitals, especially is you make a word so long that it affects the display of the page like inserting large images does. You are also better off not using SMS shorthand and local slang in your posts, because users of the boards are from all over the world and might be speaking English as a second, third, etc. language, so the person who knows the exact solution to your question might not understand the way you have asked it.

You mention it is a DV/HDV Film - how did you edit it? Did you edit both formats on the same timeline in Final Cut? (What were the settings in Final Cut for the timeline?)
If you are using HDV in a timeline due to the length of time to conform the output, you may be better off exporting the entire thing for testing (small enough for HDV, though I often use AIC or 422 nowadays).
What settings are you using in Compressor? I know you mentioned many combinations, but did you use any frame controls? What was the rate? Did you use CBR/VBR?
One thing to try to get things started. Use 8 CBR and in the frame controls set them to to "Better" for all of them. Will take a bit longer using the filters but should give you an idea where you are at. (Also take a look at the self contained movie to see if there are any artifacts/picels there).
How are you watching the DVD - computer screen or burning to a DVD?

  • Issues: new events show from google calendar but not the other way round

    Hi,
I've just followed the instructions to the letter on these pages: http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&topic=14252&answer=138740
& http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139206 and looked at the known issues page, but I am still stuck.
Entries in my Google Calendar have now synced in iOS Calendar (and weekcal which I use instead of iOS Cal) - however, none of my existing entries in my iOS Cal have synced with Google Cal.
    Here are the issues:
A recurring event created by someone else and me invited showed in iOS when I set this up
None of my events from iOS show in Google Calendar
New events I create in Google Calendar do not show in iOS
New events I create in iOS don't show in Google Calendar
To test, I deleted the recurring event which was the only one showing on iOS - immediately it was also deleted on iOS which indicates it is set-up to sync betweeb Google and iOS
Cannot find any information on help pages about this.

I'm not sure what else to suggest. As the Nokia 5800 is not natively supported by iSync you must be using an iSync Plugin, so I'd advise contacting the author of the plugin - it may be buggy and need fixing.
