If I have contacts from Gmail and contacts On My Mac, are they supposed to show as duplicates when clicking on All Contacts?

That's because "All Contacts" are all of your contacts, wherever they might be, in Gmail account or in the local storage "On My Mac."

Sounds like tou need some basic information.
The best advice I can give someone new to Numbers (and to spreadsheets in general) is to download and read at least the first four chapters of the Numbers '09 User Guide. You'll find a download link in the Help menu in Numbers '09.
When you want to start using more complicated formulas, you'll also need the iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide, available from the same menu.
Regarding your question: "Can you just give me the string for B which is just add and C which is *2."
What is to be added in "B"? What is to be multiplied by 2 in "C"?
=2+3 will return the result 5.
=A+B will return the sum of the numbers in column A and column B in the same row as the cell containing the formula. If either A or B contains a non-numerical value, the formula will return an error message.

Thanks, David. i thought i had it set correctly in Preferences in L&R. Being i was wearing my suspenders and belt at the same time i went back to L&R, cleared what was there and re-entered same to include unchecking and rechecking Time Format fgor 24-hour time. It works now. Thanks again.

Re: add-ons. Just a simple question I couldn't find an answer to. Is the term "uninstall" equivalent to "remove the software from the computer"?

I downloaded a You Tube downloader, and expected an icon to come up when You Tube was playing, according to a friend's advice.
Since this didn't happen I assumed the download didn't work, or was an old version that doesn't work anymore. I wanted to just get rid of it and try another downloader.
I went to Tools--> Add-ons--> and clicked on the downloaded software and saw the 2 options [Disable] and [Uninstall]. The terminology is unclear, as I've always thought once software resides on your computer you can install it or uninstall it without erasing it from the computer.
A simple question that seems obvious except to someone who wants to be very precise and sure. Basically "does [Uninstall] mean erase from the computer"?

With Firefox extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) you have two possibilities. You can disable an extension if you do not want to use it now, but want to keep it. Or you can uninstall an extension and remove it from the computer. Note that uninstalling an extension still leaves prefs in about:config (prefs.js) and possibly files in the profile folder that will be reused in case you decide to reinstall an extension at a later time.

IMac Wont Boot Question.I cant find an answer.

Ok Heres the story.
I have an iMac 20" display Intel Core Duo.
I came home yesterday and it was locked up.. I had to turn it off manually.
When it rebooted it started up but was stuck with a folder with a "?" on it.
I know it has to be the HDD.
I booted it from the snow leopard DVD and went into disk utlilty and repaired and verified the disk. The HDD shoes up in disk utility with the Macintosh Partition.After I repaired it it still does not appear as an option to st it as a start up disc.. I dont think the HDD is bad.. But I am not an expert
To be honest I dont care about the iMac I just want the data. I back up but I did not do one in a month or so and there are some things I want. If I removed the HDD and plugged into another mac would I be able to get the data off? I have one of those sata to USB adapters..
Any help would be appreciated let me know if you have any ideas

Do you know why it shows up in Disk Utilty but it wont boot from it?
Because the computer can't find a bootable OS on it. This is much more complicated than just seeing the drive.

Couldn't find the answer to this in any other forum about the MacProtector Malware. Please HELP!!!

I clicked on a link while reading a story about vegetarian athletes today and the MacProtector malware downloaded to my computer. I DID NOT install the application when the installer opened. I immediately started searching for support on what to do. I exited the installer and rebooted in safe mode. I found the program in the downloads menu and put it in the trash. I emptied my trash. I have looked through all of the possible places the program could be hiding and I did not see anything. Am I safe? Should I still change my password? Also, will the virus be able to find my credit card information linked to iTunes or any other shopping websites? Should I start using Foxfire permanently instead of safari?
I would appreciate any help- even though I know this has been discussed quite a bit!

Depending on the version it just creates a bunch of random fake notification and claims your infected. If you keep getting it then most likely you have Allow popups and "Open Safe files" in safari on. The only damage is if you give the criminals that created it your Credit Card.

Two time machine questions i cannot find an answer for ...

1) i use a 1 TB time capsule to back up my macbook. can i use this back up to restore to a windows computer in case of a macbook crash ? ( no plans to shift back to windows, but just need to know. )
2) i also separately back up my 395 GB music collection on a seagate 500 GB external hard disk. i used to keep this in the Mac OS extended ( journaled) format without the slightest idea what that format means. the other day i tried copying some music onto a friends windows machine , and it would not even recognise the external drive in this format . another drive in the FAT 32 format was recognised.
as i am the only mac user in my group, would it be safer to make this secondary back up in FAT 32 format, so that i could use someone's windows machine to get back my music in case of a macbook crash ?

No. When using a Time Capsule, each user's backup is stored in a special disk image format called a .sparsebundle.
I'm not aware of any utility on Windows that can open a .sparsebundle file to retrieve the files.

Right - Windows systems can't read most non-Windows disk formats, including Mac OS X's Extended format (whether journaled or not).
There are some Windows utilities such as MacDrive that enable this ability on Windows machines, but they're not part of the standard Windows OS.
In most cases, especially if you're in the minority, the easiest solution is to use the lowest common denominator and format the disk as FAT32, which both systems can use.

Simple Mail question (couldn't find Mail forum)

Sorry to ask this on iCal forum, but I saw no forums dedicated specifically for regular Mail.
This is a simple question as I am a new Mac owner: I am used to using gmail for my email, and like this primarily because, given that it is a web based email application, I can access my email from any computer, anywhere, anytime.
Given my new Mac, I am interested in switching to the Mail application and was wondering if there is any way to check my email when I am away from my home computer? I think this would work with a mobileme account, but I have not obtained one as of yet.

Quick Backup Question - Can't Find the Answer

I need to restore my phone with an old backup to get some (read 300+) photos of my newborn that were lost.
I tried restoring the phone, but the only backup in the drop down was from a sync that caused the problem in the first place.
I was able to find a backup folder under library in the finder that I think could fix the problem, but I can't seem to figure out how to actually use that backup file.
What is my next step to backup my phone with that old file, hopefully restoring the lost photos, and returning my wife from the abyss she currently resides in?

As I posted in your other thread, only one backup is kept (usually, unless you manually archive them).
A 'backup' consists of a folder with a UID (a long, seemingly meaningless name), stored in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. How many folders do you have in there? If there is more than one (and you only have one iPhone/iPod Touch), then you have 'extra' backups. Check the date modified for the folder to determine the date of the backup.
Within the backup folder are some .plist files and many .mdbackup files. It is possible to extract files from the backup, for skilled users. However, if the modified date/time of the folder is the date/time of the last sync, the pics are gone because they were overwritten.
FYI, the process to recover data from the backup involves running a python script from the terminal, then parsing the resulting SQLite database. If those concepts have meaning for you, then you might be able to at least have a look at the backup. But, I really think those pics were overwritten by the more recent backup.

to subtract one cell from another you enter a formula in a cell by:
1) click the cell where you want the result to be
2) click the cell that contains on of the operands
3) type the minus sign ("-")
4) click the other cell with the other operand
e.g. if cell A1 contains 5, cell B1, contains 2 and you want the difference of those two cells to be in cell C1....
you would click cell C1 and then type: "=A1-B1" then type the enter key OR
click cell C1 and then type "=", then click cell A1, then type "-", then click cell B1, then type the "enter" key

uh, how do I print one month of iCal, in Portrait ? With Saturday and Sunday on either side?
Every time I print now, it comes out as landscape, which is not what my boss asked for and now my job is on the line. Portrait would be great - - in an easy way to do so.

where people who know lots about this stuff hang out. I looked, and iCal seems to print only in landscape. If I had to, I might print it as a pdf, and then import the file into another program that would print it the way I wanted-- I use GraphicConverter a lot for that sort of thing. But you'll get good advice at that iCal forum.

Sorry- yet another temperature question

I've read through many, many posts on the ol' temperature issue but couldn't find an answer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
20" iSight, 1 gb ram. For the 1st year and 2 months the CPU temp was consistently between 110-120F and the HD temp hovered around 105F. A couple months ago it started running much higher-- CPU around 170, HD around 125 (according to Temperature Monitor and xResourceGraph).
Nothing's changed-- same room, same ambient temps, same (not intensive) application usage. I understand that these temps still fall in the normal range, but why the sudden jump?
Perhaps things are just not running as efficiently as before, but I just thought I'd ask in case there's something that I could do (cleaning the fans?) or should have checked.

Wow- it worked! Thank you so much for the suggestions. I was surprised to see the amount of dust that came out of the round vent in back. Then I reset the SMU (thanks for the link, MGW) and now I'm running around 110F CPU and 100F HD.

If you can't remember the answers to the security questions, then go to Express Lane and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Security' and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox).

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.
