Another Edit in Photoshop bug

When I highlight an image and select "Edit in Photoshop" the image opens in Photoshop just fine.
The problem arrises when I am finished editing and click "Save" in photoshop. The edited image does not appear in my Lightroom Library. Instead, I only see the original image. The really quirky thing is that the original now has bars on each side of it indicating a stack and the little white square appears at the top left displaying "1 of 2". If you hover over it with the mouse a pop-up says "This image is part of a stack" But if you double click it or choose "Expand stack" it still only shows the one image.
What gives? Both 2.0 & 2.1 have this issue. I never experienced this in 1.X so the bug is new.

Jao,
Nope. Everything is just as it was when I used LR 1.X together with CS3. I upgraded to LR 2.0 and CS4 about the same time so it could be an issue with either but I suspect it is in LR.
Here is another quirk I just discovered...
If I double click on the white square indicating the number of photos in the stack, both images (the PS edited & the original) show up in LRs compare view on my second monitor. The edited image still does not show in my Library screen even though it's on the second monitor in compare view. Strange.

  • Edit in Photoshop bug (Win XP)

I've had this same little problem, that's small but annoying, but only when I use Lightroom 2 (upgrading to 2.1 didn't; change anything) on Windows XP. I use windows at work, Mac OS 10.5 at home and it doesn't happen on the mac.
    What happens is this:
If I highlight an image and got to "Edit in Photoshop..." the image opens in PS just fine.
The problem comes when I save the image out as a new, separate file in a new location.
If I continue to work on that new file and do a simple save (not save as), it saves back to the original file (dscxxx-edit.psd), instead of the new file and location.
I have to do a "save as" and overwrite to get it to save to the current location. This gets quite annoying when dealing with dozens and dozens of images each and every day.
    What's the deal??

  • Another "Edit In Photoshop CS3" Problem?

I've scanned other threads and although I found similar entries, I couldn't find an answer to the following:
When (in LR2.0 and LR2.1) I "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS3" (by right clicking), the selected image correctly opens up in CS3. I can then edit the image but when I close it down and save it does not get re-imported into LR. Instead the edited image is saved in the same folder as the original and I have to manually reimport into LR.
Obviously LR1.x didn't have this problem as it created the duplicate prior to CS3 opening. However, I don't know if this problem I'm seeing is "as designed" in LR2 or whether it is a known bug, or if there is a setting I need to change in my installation.
If my PC/config has any bearing, I'm running Vista-64, AMD Phenom, 8GB RAM.
    Thanks for any help!

    Hi Nick,
I've tried all the things suggested on http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404907. I actually went further than all this - I wiped the system drive clean and did a clean install of vista, lightroom and photoshop!
However, I think you have probably worked out what is happening. I too am on a multi-drive setup with my catalog/files on a separate drive to my system drive. And exactly the same thing appears to be happening to me. The edited image file (on exit from PShop) is being saved on the drive the original image is stored (same directory as you would expect), however I *think* lightroom is actually creating "dummy" (blank) files on the system drive (where lightroom is installed).
I say *think* because I can't check it now because my catalogue has just become corrupted. Luckily before it crashed I noticed that there were files shown on my C drive and I know for a fact I have not put any there. Unfortunately LRoom now thinks my main catalog is open by another application, even after a couple of reboots, so I can no longer get back in?!.
I'll try and sort the catalog out tomorrow (or recreate a new one) and confirm your suspicion. I'm sure you're right - Lroom is getting confused and assumes the edited files are on the same drive as it is installed!! ...

  • Roundtrip editing with Photoshop - bug in iPhoto :-(

I've setup Photoshop as external editor. Opening the photo in Photoshop works fine. I save as .jpg. But iPhoto doesn't seem to recognize the changed photo. And continues to show the edited photo in it's original state. Actually showing it twice. But not with the edits.
Now I looked at the folders. iPhoto 11 has the folder Masters for the pictures, but the external editing pics go through the folder Previews. And hence saving ends up in Previews. Since Masters is a hidden folder; you can't even save the new jpg file there. Looks like a bug to me...
The external option - save as, and reimport is just a pain... that I can't recommend to anyone in my family. I personally use Lightroom + Photoshop for myself, and it works like a charm.

Sorry, but it is one of the above.
That's a setting in Photoshop. It's defaulting to psd for saving, so when you "flatten... so it can be saved as a JPG" you're doing a Save As.

  • Another "edit in photoshop" and keyboard shortcut question

I have both PSCS6 32 bit and 64 bit installed on my computer (usual default installation). When I next installed LR4, it automatically picked PSCS6 64 bit as the default external editor without asking my preference.
I always use PSCS6 32 bit and not the 64 bit version.
While I can add the PSCS6 32 bit program as an "additional external editor" and access it from a right click contextual menu for editing an image from LR4, I cannot use the convenient Ctrl + E keyboard shortcut since that will always launch the unwanted PSCS6 64 bit program.
Is there a way to reestablish this keyboard shortcut convenience for my 32 bit program?
    Thanks in advance!
    OS: Windows 7 professional

    Scott,
There is a registry hack you could try:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/edit-photoshop-command-missing-photoshop.html
That's for making PS show up when it doesn't show up at all, but there's a place to add the path to the executable that you could modify to point to the 32-bit version. You might want to do a checkpoint for System Restore before you start.

  • Edit in Photoshop Fixed in 2.1--Well not really!

Just downloaded the 2.1 update and tried out one of my major annoyances which was the edit in Photoshop bug which would not automatically add the file back into Lightroom. Now when I do it, seems to edit the photo, then save it back to Lightroom. Only problem now is color lables. When I edit, I assign color labels for B&W, Tweak, Standard. Yellow is for B&W, Green is for Tweaks, and Blue is standard edits. If I choose to edit a photo that has a yellow label in photoshop, it adds it back to lightroom with no color label. I then need to stop filtering by color label, find the edited file, assign it my yellow color label, and then go back to filtering my images in order to stack it with the original. Whew, too much work. Any body have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Toby

Toby I could be wrong and if I am someone I am sure will point it out.
I thought that when you edited an image in Photoshop that you weren't
actually editing the original image file, but a copy. If that is the case
the image you save after editing in Photoshop is a totally different file
(someplace on your system) and being that wouldn't have the color code
assigned because it isn't that image any more.
Right or wrong what I would like to see adding is that when you edit an
image or take it to another program or whatever for whatever reason (HDR,
Pano, etc.) when it came back in to LR it was automatically added to a new
collection called edited. This would be a LR only collection that the user
couldn't add to other than to edit a photo in photoshop, make a panorama,
etc. This way you could easily find, move, keyword, etc. images that you
just stitched, made in to an HDR or edited in photoshop. This would save you
from having to search the library for them.

  • Multiple Edits in Photoshop not saving into Lightroom?

In Lightroom 3 I was able to edit in Photoshop, save the file, then make another edit in photoshop and save it under a different name, and that file would also show up in Lightroom.
    For example;
in Lightroom I select "Image 1" and select edit in photoshop,
I edit this in photoshop and save.
    Lightroom shows "Image 1-edit"
I make another edit and select "Save As" and save it as "Image 1 Alternate".
"Image 1 Alternate" shows up in Lightroom next to "Image 1-edit"
This does not appear to be happening with Lightroom 4. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere?
    Thanks for your replies

Additional "save as" edits are saved into Lightroom 3. It does not "break the link".
I'm assuming here that you are using Photoshop CS5.x and the current version of Camera Raw? If so, this is as expected...LR4 is using a pipeline that will match up to ACR 7 when it's released.
As it is now, LR4 must actually do the processing prior tp sending it to Photoshop. LR4 also has to save the file on disk prior to sending it to Photoshop.
If you were using ACR 7 in CS6 then ACR would actually be doing the processing and the behavior of this way of opening in Photoshop does NOT have to save the file prior to sending it to Photoshop. When ACR does the opening, you can do a Save or a Save As and Lightroom will know about those saves. Pretty LR4 doesn't know where the Save As file goes to and that's why it isn't showing up.
The two basic behaviors; LR synced with ACR and LR not synced with ACR goes back to version 2 (I think). It's a limitation in LR when LR and ACR aren't in sync.

  • BUG: NEWLINE IN CAPTION CAUSES EDIT IN PHOTOSHOP NOT TO WORK

    OSX 10.5.4
    Lightroom 2.0
    CS3 10.0.1
Put a newline character in the Caption field. Like
    Barrio District

Then "Edit in Photoshop", Photoshop will fire up, but no image appears. I take the newline out of the caption and WOW it works... Please fix. Promptly. Thanks.

So I cleared my ~/Library/Caches/Adobe Camera Raw folder and now it seems to work. Come to think of it, I also had recently changed the max cache size in LR2 preferences to 4GB, but at this point there are too many variables to whether either of those things played a role.
Sorry for the false alarm. Its like taking your car to mechanic for "that" sound ... that suddenly stops when you get to the garage :)

  • BUG: LR2.0 shows duplicate drive after edit in photoshop export

Lightroom 2.0 shows a new duplicate drive after edit in photoshop export. file opens as DNG in photoshop, saves as PSD, and saves to the right folder on the hard drive. But lightroom now shows 2 "drive G"'s(that's my image vault drive letter) The folders are correct, the second drive only contains the edited psd files. display in explorer shows the file in the right location with the original DNG file. This is a random event not every edited file displays under the second drive. I have a total of 6 files (I had more, but I moved my image vault to a new drive and fixed the ten I had at that time.)

No I had to do it manually. When I had lightroom 2, here's what would happen.
    1. My external drive would show up, but all the photos would be marked as missing.
    2. I would then relocate the photos, which I had do do directory by directory. At this time I did not have all of them under a master directory.
    3. As I relocated them, the second drive would show up, which would contain all my directories as I located them.
    4. After I had relocated all the directories, I would delete the now empty duplicate - which has been the original - drive.
    5. After I shut down LR and restarted, the whole process would begin again.
    6. After I installed 2.1, I put all my directories under a parent directory, relocated the parent, it found all the files, automatically deleted the ghost duplicate, and I have not had the problem since.
    Hope all this makes sense,
    Good luck

  • Lightroom - edit in Photoshop CS3 problem

    Hi All,
I'm running Lightroom 2 on a MacPro. When I first installed it all was fine with 'edit in' function, which I had configured to PS CS3 my primary external editor. Later, as a test, I added an additional editor - Photomatix - just as a test more than anything else. I subsequently noticed that when I then tried to edit in CS3, still set as my primary editor, I was no longer shown the 'edit options' window i.e. 'Edit a copy with LR adjustments', 'edit a copy', edit original'. Instead, the original file would open directly in PS with none of my LR adjustments! I have now had to set CS3 also as my additional editor to get around this - when set as additional it shows the prompt.
Does anyone have any ideas about this behavior and how to reset LR so that it will prompt me again when I try to edit in my primary editor? I'm guessing this must be a bug with the current version. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx.
    Dave

    >Dabow:They are all RAW files that I'm sending. The fact that I also have PS set as my secondary editor and from there it prompts me with the edit options window proves that it's a fault with the primary editor slot.
The primary editor slot is designed to behave differently than the secondary editor slot. From everything you have said it appears to be acting exactly as designed.
The primary editor slot, which is always photoshop.exe, is designed to send RAW files directly to Photoshop after applying the develop adjustments made in LR2x. Thomas Knoll said it best in another thread discussing this exact same issue:
Thomas Knoll, "LR 2.1RC - Still No Dialog Box w/ "Edit in Photoshop CS3" Option" #3, 26 Sep 2008 7:19 am
When you use the secondary editor slot, even if you select Photoshop.exe, those special hooks built for use with Photoshop.exe will not be used and this is by design. By placing Photoshop.exe into the secondary editor then you guarantee the old, i.e. LR1x, method of accessing an editor is used. That 'old' method activates the options dialog.
    To sum it up:
*RAW via Primary Editor slot (always Photoshop.exe) = no options dialog.
*RAW via Secondary Editor slot (even if it's Photoshop.exe) = options dialog.
*non-RAW via any editor slot = options box

  • Edit in photoshop looks terrible

i thought i would try the "seamless" editing between LR and photoshop. go to photo, edit in photoshop....CS2 opens up...i can edit, dogde, burn, whatever...how great! then click save....and there are my changes in LR. in a perfect world, this would be great. but, the RAW file looks TERRIBLE when opened in photoshop. it looks like a washed out bluish cast with a bit of negative effect on it. it just looks bad. then when you save and view it in LR, it looks the same...terrible. i spoke with a couple people and they said this was a bug in the beta version. looks like an issue still. so now i have to take the long way around and export to tiff, then work on the photos, then export to jpg. ridiculous. i still like the software but they really should have focused on the big things instead of the small stupid things...like the 5 star rating system for photos.

there was no tone in my first post, what you were reading was insane frustration. i spent 5 hours on this and it still isn't working. sorry if you took it personal. the photos look faded when i right click, choose edit in CS2, and view them in CS2. if i open any other photos in CS2 they look mint. let me say they don't look night and day but they are very faded and the color saturation is not there. what settings in CS2? where do i look for these? i thought everything was perfect since it always is when i just use CS2. 2 of my other guys have the same issue, as well as another photo studio we are in touch with who dont' work with us. 4 people with the same issue is odd i think you would agree. i don't think we will get much resolved via this since i can't show you the photos. and when i do select edit in CS2, i get the box that comes up with the 3 bullet points...half the time i only am able to select the 3rd, since the first and 2nd are greyed out and yes i have the full version. bought right from adobe. what setting do you check off in CS2 to make it look great? then when i click SAVE in CS2, it brings it back to LR with my edits which is great, but it's the faded non-saturated version. i really really really wish i could give you more info but i can't. i'm not new to adobe, just LR. i have been using After FX, premiere, PS, encore, audition for years.

  • Edit in Photoshop: Metadata gone!

I wonder: is this a bug or is there something wrong with my installation?
    OS X 10.5.6, LR 2.2, PS CS 4
If I select "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4..." for RAW files that have their metadata appended IN Lightroom, the metadata is gone in Photoshop (checked with "File>File Info...") and of course also in the resulting PDS or TIFF file that's then appearing in LR.
If the RAW file already has metadata inside it (appended with Photo Mechanic or any other application that writes metadata INTO the RAW file), then metadata is preserved and Photoshop WILL show the metadata.
Also, if LR is set up with PS CS4 as the Additional External Editor and this is used with the "Edit in ..." command, the metadata will be preserved.
Has anyone else made similar experiences?
    Thomas

Jao, great job, problem solved! Thank you!!
It was a faulty IPTC Date format. This is what I had in LR's IPTC Date field:
    2009-03-14 19:15:26
But this is not the correct way of writing it. It has to be:
    2009-03-14T19:15:26 or
2009-03-14T19:15:26-04:00 (if I want to indicate that the time was EDT, Eastern Daylight Time and 4 hours behind UTC)
If written like that, Bridge will also show the time (in the first example without the "T", Bridge only showed the date), although it won't show the UTC offset.
If exported to Photoshop CS4 with "Edit in Photoshop CS4" Photoshop now shows all the IPTC data although it strips the time. Back in LR the time will be gone as well (obviously).
Why Photoshop CS4 doesn't accept the time in this IPTC field and why Bridge rather uses a local representation (3/14/2009, 7:15:26 PM) is another story.
So again for all those who do not want to read all of the above:
The IPTC Date was in a bad format and thus ALL IPTC metadata got stripped on its way to Photoshop.
    Thanks again, Jao!

  • LR 2.1 edit in Photoshop problem

I've just started Lightroom on a new desktop: Windows xp pro 32 bit, 4gb ram with 3G switch, Nvidia Geforce9500 video card. LR basically stopped working (wouldn't export and switching from grid to loupe view took up to 30 seconds). Updated the video driver and that seemed to solve problem of speed but it still wouldn't export (the file is a 170mb tiff [panorama]). So I installed LR 2.1. I have made a rotation and crop to this image in the Develop module and exported it to another folder, and the export function works fine now, but when I use "edit in Photoshop" or indeed just go to Photoshop and open the file, the crop and rotation hasn't been applied, even though LR shows it has.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, David

Ok. Problem solved I think. But I would appreciate a comment from anyone on this: When I export a tiff and in the Export Dialogue - File Settings - Format and select "original", then the tiff is exported with no adjustments made to it, just the sidecar's details, so it looks correct in LR. When I choose "Tiff" under the Format settings, then the adjustments are "baked in" so to speak. I now have the file I want.
Is this a bug or normal behaviour? David

  • "Edit In" Photoshop CC not working for RAW or DNG files after applying LR 5.3 and Camera Raw 8.3

I just applied the Lightroom 5.3 and Camera Raw 8.3 updates and now am no longer able to open RAW or DNG files into Photoshop CC. When I select a file and choose "Edit In" Photoshop, photoshop will launch, then nothing will happen. After 2 to 5 minutes, an error will popup in Lightroom saying "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CC could not be launched." An error I've never seen before. When I click "Ok", Lightroom will show that it's "preparing a file for editing" in the upper left, it will create and save a psd to disk and in the catalog (another new behavior), then it will open in photoshop. All other file types (jpgs, tiff, psd) seem to work/open fine between applications. No difference if I open photoshop prior to selecting "Edit In". Selecting "Edit In" other applications, like Viveza, work fine.
I tried first deleting preference files in both applications. No luck. Ditto for plugins. Notta. Eventually I completely uninstalled and fresh installed Photoshop, Lightroom, and Bridge from the cloud. Same deal...can't open raw/dng files into Photoshop.
I'm at a complete loss, dead in the water, with a mountain of editing work piling on top of me. Kicking myself for applying the upgrades, which I had been delaying for some time to avoid just such a cluster%#$. Ugh.
    I'm on a PC running Windows 7 64bit.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In the normal situation, LR needs to see a PS installed for it to detect the Edit In PS option is possible, so if you uninstall both, then install PS, first, then LR.  Of course with this release there may be some hiccup that requires installing either one or the other, again, but if you've uninstalled both and are reinstalling both, then install PS, first.
