Another major problem after 10.4.8 update

Hi everyone,
I've never had any major problem with any Mac OS update yet until I had the crazy idea to install the 10.4.8 update last week. I wish I would have never done this. This is also the first time I wish I had Windows since I can't remember such a big screw up with any Windows update I've seen.
But back to the problem, after the installation on my old 12" Powerbook (1.33GHz with an additional 1GB of RAM) the system got really slow. The harddisk was accessed all the time, so after reading some forums people said that Spotlight would run a re-index of the database which made sense to me. So I just let it run over night and the next day the permanent HDD access was gone, but whenever I tried to access a folder it took ages (HDD access again...). So I decided to reboot which took about 20 minutes until the desktop fully showed up and was useable. Again, I had HDD access all the time. After two hours or so it stopped again, but as soon as I clicked on something, for example a folder, it started again. At that point the Powerbook was simply not useable anymore because I couldn't even start a program.
So I start browsing through several forums and many people suggested to re-install the 10.4.8 combo update again. That's what I tried, after a while I could only hear the HDD access running and running. The installer said 29 minutes left and progress bar didn't move any further. I had it running for over a hour like that. I couldn't abort it, I could start no other software, nothing. It still showed 29 minutes and the HDD was accessed all the time.
So I restarted the Powerbook since this obviously wasn't going anywhere. Apple logo came up, the little gear spinning thing as well and of course I could hear the HDD being accessed. After two hours of doing this I aborted and decided to boot into safe mode to install the combo update. Again, same situation. HDD running like crazy and Apple logo, but no login screen coming up.
So I decided to boot from the Install disk and have the disc utility check the HDD... but of course after selecting the language and clicking continue at the screen when the HDD first shows up it starts to access the HDD... I can't select the HDD, I can't even get to the DU, nothing. It's been running like that for hours now. It seems like whenever the HDD is involved in something the accessing starts and just keeps running without any result. The HDD is getting very hot already.
I've never run into such a problem before, so I'm kinda clueless what to do next. I don't mind to reinstall, but I have some files on that HDD that I need (some notes in text files, some emails and so on).
So at this point I can't boot into OS X to access the HDD and I can't use the installer disk to access DU or even reinstall if I wanted to. I don't think the HDD is broken, this only happened after the 10.4.8 update. It just seems that every HDD access takes hours and hours longer than it should.
What options do I have to get my data from the disk? I'll try to install OS X to a new external drive tomorrow (need one with firewire first). If that doesn't help I thought about pulling out the HDD from the Powerbook and hook it up to my MacMini or an iMac.
If anyone has any other suggestion or solved a similar problem before, please let me know.
Best,
Stephan

  • Major problems after 10.4.11 update!

Warning: think seriously before upgrading to 10.4.11. I did this recently and the following happened:
Update went well - computer started normally
Then noticed that the Air Port wasnt working - was unable to find my network.
After a restart, there was a Kernel Panic on startup - I could only boot in safe mode.
Used disc utility and fsck and all reported no problems.
    Hardware test also normal
Performed and Archive and install back to 10.4 - but computer would not restart and still had the Kernel panic on start up - had to finish the install in safe mode after which it restarted and had another Kernel panic.
Switched off and left for several hours - then it started up ok??
Have now regraded to 10.4.10 as before but still have no Air Port working.
I have no idea why the airport is not working now as it worked when I was at 10.4.0 - also why the Kernel Panic seems not to occur after the machine has been turned off for a few hours.
Have not wiped the drive yet as this will be a last resort - can anyone help or offer advice?
Apple are aware of the problem I have experienced and have been very helpful so far but this does not excuse the fact that the machine was working fine before this update and now I am looking at a complete new system install!

Same ever since upgrading to 10.4.11 I am getting Gray screen crashes alot about every hour mostly seems to be triggered using safari.
Here is the error message I am getting.

  • Searching problem after 10.5.6 Update

Hello everyone, we are having a problem with searching shares mounted on clients from a server.
Prior to 10.5.6 we could search an entire share as well as folders in the share. After 10.5.6 we can't search the share and we can only search folders in the share.
The server is currently running 10.4.11.
I guess what I'm wondering is... are there people with server 10.5 that are also seeing this problem or would upgrading the server fix this search issue?
    Thanks
    Mike

on the other machines that didn't update to 10.5.6. They are able to search all shares. My 10.5.6 machine can only search localhost and Jukebox ...I ran mdutil on the 10.5.6 machine, here are the results:

    Hi all...
I recently installed the 10.5.6 OS upgrade and I've encountered a problem. I can no longer search my network attached servers - there is no search activity of any kind when I type in search terms. My local search works fine...I just can't search anything on my network ... windows servers. Is there a compatibilty issue between OS X 10.5.6 and Extreme Z-IP? Any helpful tips

One of our users was able to search through our network shares(extreemeZ-ip) just fine yesterday morning, mid morning he updated to 10.5.6 and is no longer able to use finder to perform searches on those shares
Mac OS 10.5.6 clients can no longer search Mac OS 10.4.11 share points

After upgrading our workstations from Mac OS 10.5.5 to 10.5.6, we no longer receive Finder search results from our file server that runs Mac OS X Server v.10.4.11.
Are there any other solutions available other than rolling the workstations back to 10.5.5 or upgrading the file server to 10.5.6

  • 3 Problems after jb 4.3 update

stockmail exchange active sync shows only headers - no mail content
bluetoth connect to my HTC One S didn´t work
screen flickers when using virt. keyboard
since everything worked well with 4.2.2 and there was no help from sony i decided to do a rollback
!* same problems with 10.41.B.0.109 (last working version for me is 10.3.1.C.0.136 aka 4.2.2)

    hi.
I contacted Sony about the Bluetooth / Wireless problem after the 4.3 update, eventually all I got back was that they're aware of the problems (Bluetooth) and are working on it for the next update. How long this will take is anyones guess.
I find it incredible that they rolled out the 4.3 update because it has so many bugs, at least give us an easy way to roll-back to 4.2.2 ...... that actually worked!

  • Major problems after updating

Greetings all, have been spending a lot of time reading and trying this and that to fix this issue with out having to post a thread about it, but here we are.
I performed updates on 4/27, before doing so, I created an image of my Arch partition like I always do.  Arch was working great for me with no problems.  I performed the updates like I normally do
    # pacman -Syu
There were a few updates but not as many as a couple of weeks prior and all seemed to download and install with out a hitch or any errors.  Once the updates were complete, I rebooted.  This is when everything went arwy.
Reboot hung for about 5 minutes on "Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer" Eventually it made it past this and went to my login. I logged in and executed "startx" another 5 minutes with a black screen and a solid cursor in the top left corner of the screen then eventually my X started and I was in my OpenBox WM. I figured maybe with the new kernel it had to set a few things in the background. Then I noticed I did not have much control of my mouse (synaptic touch pad on laptop) the slightest movement had the mouse arrow all over the place. Well I eventually got it to go to reboot on my OB menu. Reboot started ok then froze for about 3 minutes on "Sending SIGTERM to Processes" eventually it passed this and rebooted back to grub menu. Chose Arch and another 5 minute wait for "Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer". Once it got passed this is was about a 3 minute wait on "Checking File System" Eventually I was back in my WM and this time the mouse worked normally. I decided to see what Shutdown would do. Just like reboot, it hung on "Sending SIGTERM to Processes" then hung on "Power Off" and never powered off. Did a hard reboot same things hung but this time the solid black screen remained after attempting to start X and never went into my WM.
So here is what I did. I re-imaged the partition with my known good Arch partition from 4/27. All was well, Arch worked like a champ again but still needed to run updates. Re-booted and got to the command prompt and started updates. (prior update attempt was done while in the WM via terminal.  I read where the updates should be performed from the command line without starting X)Everything seemed to install fine, no errors. Re-booted and same thing as before. Noted a few errors and X never fully came online either.
Upon bootup at Starting D-BUS system message bus, got the error:
Failed to start message bus, the pid file /var/run/dbus.pid exist. You can remove this file and try again.
Then boot up re-started until it got to rpcbind.
    ERROR RPCBIND is not running
Well after a few minutes I was finally at the command prompt. As root I removed the /var/run/dbus.pid file and rebooted again.
No change, everything that happened above happened again.
So in essence, I can't get a clean update to work in my current Arch. I could easily wipe the partition and do a fresh install of Arch, but I would not know what caused the problem, and I would not be learning anything.
A couple of key things to add.  This is a laptop.  Compaq V2000.  I also have Arch using OB on my desktop and it's pretty much set up the same and I have not had ANY issues during updates.  Arch is working GREAT on the desktop.  This has really got me stumped because it does not make any sense.  If I had the same issues on the desktop that would have made more sense.  I'm also running 2 other OS's on this same laptop and not having any issues with either of them.  Other OS's if it is important is XP Pro and Crunch Bang Statler.
I appreciate any and all responses and guidance you provide,  I apologize for this being long, but wanted to supply as much helpful information as possible.
    All the best,
    Ian

you're right, this issue really doesn't make sense.  but, what also doesn't make sense is why you're still using HAL.  arch uses udev now, the successor and replacement to hal.  i'm sure if you're using both at the same time, you are really screwing things up.  i would download a brand new image of arch and reinstall it.  theres a slight possibility that udev doesn't have certain drivers for an important piece of hardware you have.  this is highly unlikely but you never know.
depending on what this is used for, you might want to use something more dated like debian.  i myself have converted from debian to arch and i like arch a lot more but debian is a bit more hardware friendly than arch, and on a fresh install it is less likely to encounter issues.

  • Is anyone else having major problems after updating to 10.4.8???

It seems like most of the directly-related-to-OS X programs on my Power Mac are going screwy since updating. DVD Player freaks out after pausing, iChat won't let me video chat, my CPU fans occasionally go into turbo mode... heck, the performance of my Power Mac is generally poorer than before this update. Anyone else having issues right now?
A Mac expert buddy of mine did observe that if Apple releases a not-so-great update to the OS, usually the next one kicks butt. But my patience is wearing thin...

    Hello Paul.
    No problems/issues here.
Did you check the hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from your Tiger install package before installing the 10.4.8 Update?
Did you disconnect all external peripheral devices and quit all running applications before the install?
If not and as a first step, check this link for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
For future reference before installing a major OS Update such as 10.4.8, check this link.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html
If there is no change after performing all system troubleshooting procedures per the link provided, did you use Software Update to install the 10.4.8 Update?
If so, download the 10.4.8 PPC Combo Update and try re-installing it.
A Mac expert buddy of mine did observe that if Apple releases
a not-so-great update to the OS, usually the next one kicks butt.
But my patience is wearing thin...
After each and every major OS update is released by Apple, there are a significant number of posts here claiming the update killed this or that or reporting a particular problem always blamed on the update. If there is a 10.4.9 update released by Apple, it will be no different here afterwards.
Although there have been times a portion of a particular major OS update is determined to be the cause of a reported problem, this is usually quickly addressed by Apple but for the most part, the process of installing a major OS update brings an unnoticed/underlying problem to the surface which is not caused by the update.

  • Problems after recent slew of updates

After the recent mass of updates through pacman...I have a few problems. My UPS monitor applet doesn't show up in the taskbar anymore...however it's still being detected, and I can view the status of it w/ "apcaccess status". Another problem I'm having is now ALSA's PCM channel is all messed up again. I've tried the usual fix...blacklisting all the sound modules except for the sound card driver and snd-pcm-oss...but that doesn't work either. Anybody else seeing these problems as well??

Update: Found a fix for the mouse sensitivity issue. The new xorg server includes new options to put into your xorg.conf file. More information can be found here: http://www.x.org/wiki/Development/Docum … 34190b732d .
As far as the option I put into my xorg.conf file to fix it was this:
    Option "ConstantDeceleration" "3"
Hope this helps people in the future.

  • Major problems after ICS on my Bionic

So I've had the Bionic since it was released and have never had any major problems with it.  It wasn't until a few days ago when I woke up to a notice of the ICS update finally being available, so of course I pressed on Install now.  I ended up going to sleep again and waking up later to a frozen screen.  I did a battery pull since it was just frozen on the unlock screen, and after it booted up I was having issues with everything.  Half of my icons were gone, neither of my text messaging apps worked and would force close randomly.  I kept getting random reboots while just staring at my phone, sometimes many times in a row.
I ended up taking it to a couple different Verizon stores, the people at the first one told me they haven't heard of this problem nor did they know ICS was even out for Bionic yet, the second store was like "all you can do is FDR".  After being hesitant on doing that since I didn't want to lose anything, I finally did it.  After the restore, it hung on the "preparing system" screen for at least 2 hours before I finally did a forced restart.  After that it decided to continue with everything...things were going okay for a little while, until I started to reinstall my apps.  Then I started getting random reboots again, force closes on programs, and horrible battery life.  I decided to give it a couple days to maybe settle in, and well, I thought it was better, but last night I started getting random reboots again and force closes on a lot of apps.
This is getting extremely irritating as I cannot use my phone much in fear of it crashing or rebooting itself.  In the time it took me to type this, it has restarted 2-3 times, which is why I'm glad I have a laptop instead of having to type this on my phone.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or should I request a replacement phone?  I have not rooted nor installed anything that changes system settings, and these problems only started after the ICS update, so it is not anything I did to my phone.

I've got the same problem after the update 3 days ago. The homescreen keeps closing and reloading - that takes >10 seconds every time. This update made my phone unusable. I can't get to anything because the interface keeps rebooting. I tried restarting it, taking the battery out and factory reset. Nothing helped - it works fine for about 5 minutes and starts messing up again. I can't even answer a call on it because it just freezes when I use any interface features. OMG... Motorola never again!!!
I'm taking it to the store lets see what I can get out of them. Who is testing these updates? Monkeys? That's what causes people to switch to iphones.

  • Problems after iphone 3.1 update

after i updated to 3.1, i've experienced 4 major problems:
1 - the battery drains much faster than before with the same settings, twice as fast it seems.
2 - the wifi reception is quite poor. i lose the connection when even in the same room.
3 - the cellular reception seems worse
4 - maps with GPS is very bad - while driving, the lag time between updating the location is now in the 1 minute to 1:30 range, making it useless for getting directions around town.

  • Problems after 10.6.8 Update?

Ever since I updated my Mac to 10.6.8, I have been having problems with my MBP freezing. It will freeze, then come back and I have to re-launch finder. Also, MS Outlook 2011 freezes when I delete mail, or simply try to quit it(Force Quit). Safari freezes when it opens up too, and it does what a PC does upon login, "warm up" so i can no longer start doing what ever immediately. Is anyone else having this problem?

My 2011 MBP 13" i7 has had no issues whatsoever after
10.6.8 update.  However, the process I went through was
    as follows:
        1.  Booted my MBP from a clone on a Firewire drive.
(hard drives are so cheap these days there is no
excuse not to have a clone or TM backup)
        2.  Ran a repair disk on the internal drive using
Disk Warrior.  Disk Utility repair disk will work
as well.   I use Disk Warrior because I can also
run a check for corrupt files.
        3.  Repaired permissions on the internal drive.
        4.  Rebooted to internal drive.
        5.  Updated my clone, so that I have a clean system
             to revert to.
        6.  Downloaded the Combo update and ran it.
        7.  After reboot, repaired permissions.
Now, for those of you who are having slow systems after
the update, check process monitor to see what is sucking
up the CPU time.  Then go from there.
For those of you with system freezing issues, boot in safe
mode.  If the problems go away, then some driver or process
is being loaded at normal boot that is causing the problem.
Also, if you are using any "add ons" to applications such as
Safari or Mail, disable them, if you can, and see if the issue
    persists.
With all this said, yes my MBP is running just fine with 10.6.8,
but my 2010 Mini has annoying audio issues with the update.
There may be more on it, but the audio issues are enough
for me to go back to 10.6.7, since this is part of my
    entertainment system.

  • Printing problems after 10.6.5 update

Any news on a possible problem with the latest system update? After doing this the other day I can't seem to print correctly out of photoshop CS5. The print box seems to preview correctly but does not come out the way I want. The same file opened up on a 10.6.4 system will print good. I hear it may be the upgrade that happened. Is there a fix coming out soon? Or any ideas on how I can help my computer. Also, just in case you tell me to do this I already cleaned house on the preferences for photoshop.

  • Problems after iOS 6.0 update with iMessage  and FaceTime

After iOS 6.0 update i had problems to used iMessage and FaceTime

Messages will almost send but stop right before completion. FaceTime will go through only after multiple attempts. After that iMessage will work for a little while. Have talked with folks at apple support but they did not have a solution. Have tried both closing out the programs as well as turning the iPod off and back on. Neither has solved the problem. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks for your help.

  • The only way to fix Xperia P problems after the jelly bean update!

After the jelly bean update my Xperia got slow, I could not answer phone calls, the call log took so much time to appear , I have tried uninstalling external softwares , reseting the phone , nothing worked. Finally I have downgraded the phone follwing the guidelines provided in this link - http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Android-development/GUIDE-How-to-Install-Jelly-Bean-ICS-Ice-Cream-Sand...
Now my phone is fast , gallery is working fine , I can receive phone calls , no useless chrome by default , the google search widget works fast , the overall performance is much better. So I would recommend people to downgrade their Xperia p to ice cream sandwich and stick with it. OLD is GOLD!

What is your build version now after downgrading to ICS? I could not download 6.1.1.B.1.54 from the list which was best to me.. Please let me know quickly, I'm having the same **bleep** problem in JB.

  • Problems after applying latest Airport update.

I have a core duo macbook and was able to maintain a connection to my wpa secured wireless network before running software update a few days ago. After doing so, I can't maintain a connection. It simply stops working.
I disconnect, reconnect, and os x says there was a problem connecting to my network. I turn airport off then back on and still get the same error.
I am still able to sign onto other networks. My ibook and powerbook have no trouble connecting and maintaining a connection to my wpa secured network when my mac book is having trouble. I have not applied any software updates to those recently.
After rebooting the macbook, I can connect just fine. This happens once every 3 hours or so and is driving me nuts. Anyone know how to rollback the update or know what might be wrong?
    Thanks,
    Todd

    hello,
i have the same problem after the update. i see some members on the forums suggesting to turn off the wifi security helps, but who wants to give free wifi to there neighbors. with my situation, my router has a settings for "WPA-AES" or "WPA-TKIP." i had my router set for "WPA-AES" before the update, things works fine, after the update i tried to delete the key chain entries of my wifi connection and the preferred network list, which didn't help, but changing my router to be "WPA-TKIP" helped. my connection works normally again, i can reboot, put the macbook to sleep and it reconnects fine.
hope this might work for you if you have this "TKIP" setting for you wifi router. i have a buffalo WZR-RS-G54 router, btw.
    good luck.

  • SMS problem after 3.1.2 update

    Hi,
I am not receiving any text messages after 3.1.2 update, and my phone has become too slow. Can one help please.
    Thank you

    Hello Carolyn,
Thank you for the warm welcome. As for my problem I did not want to be more specific but here are the gory details : I have 2 iphones. A 3GS with the 3.1.2 software and a regular 3G with the 3.0 software.
Whenever I plug the 3G, it appears in the 'My Computer' screen. I have access to the camera roll and can transfer my pictures to the computer folder I use for later iTunes transfer, using the Photos tab.
Now when I plug the 3GS, nothing happens. I checked the autoplay features based on the webpage you sent, and it did not solve the problem. Both phones actually have the same settings, and only the regular 3G works. I am now thinking about trying backup restore and/or factory defaults restore, to see if it fixes the problem.
What happens to the camera roll in these situations ? Is it included in the backup ? Otherwise I will have to find a way to get them :-/
