Another one with Exchange aches...

Hi folks,
Ok, I've tried for the umpteenth time, my head is buzzing and if I don't get this running this weekend I will throw the whole stuff out of my window. Seriously. I have tried every suggestion I could see here and still fail to connect.
Installations
Server: SBS2003 with all updates installed, brandnew, more or less with an out-of-the-box standard set-up, works as a file- and printserver in his spare time
Computers: Apple iMac 2,8 Ghz Aluminium with newest OSX 10.5.4 and Entourage, MacBook 1,83 Ghz with same set-up, Dell Vostro 1710 with XP Pro SP2 and Outlook 2003, 3 PC Desktops with same set-up
Mobile devices: 5 HTC TyTn II aka Kaiser on WM 6.1, one iPhone 3G 16 GB
OWA: https://mail.mycompany.com/exchange
Server: mail.mycompany.com
e-mail: [email protected]
User: Rene
Password: gofigure
Domain: mycompany.local
No SSL or other certificates employed.
This is a real small business environment with only 6 users and very low security policies, aside from a firewall there are none. (The information shared is really not sensitive.)
Now the thing is, that all those other devices (aside from the iPhone) work and sync just fine. Really great.
I have set-up the iPhone for this so often that I lost count. Everytime I get the same response: it says Exchange set up for sync and signals an all clear. When I go to my mail and open the Exchange Account there is nothing there (no folders, no mails). When I sent a testmail from the Exchange to my mobileMe and normal business account, I get nothing, although the iPhone makes the "swoosh" sound which should signal that a mail was sent successfully.
During the set-up, it nags because of the lacking SSL (we don't use that on any of our devices), but it can be configured without any other error messages.
If I try to access OWA with the iPhones Browser it works flawlessly (even without an error message), so why can't I get it to work with the Mail app? First priority is to get mail, I could live with it if I could add the Exchange contacts and calendar later.
We do have a professional company who cares for our server, but they have a steep price tag and I wan't to avoid heated discussions with my boss, just because I wanted to get my "toy" as he named it to work.
I am not an MCSE, but have a good idea of what Exchange is about and most of the time can find my way. I also have full administrative rights, so I can make any changes you want me to.
I would greatly appreciate step-by-step help...
Thank you very much in advance for your tips. Any help is welcome.
Rene

I too got tired of trying different solutions from the forums and everywhere else I could find information. It seems as if everyone has their own special solution that works for them. Their solutions didn't work for me. I ended up going through these guys for a remote setup.

Within 15 minutes he had my boss's iPhone syncing. I bit the bullet and paid the $175 fee. It was worth it. I got the boss off my back and was the hero for the day. If you don't feel like paying the fee, this is how he set up my server:
Note: I used a self-signed certificate for my Default Web Site.
ASP.NET version for all: 1.1.4322
Default Website:
Website Identification
-TCP port: 80 >> IP_Address
-SSL port: 443 >> Default
Authentication and access control
-Enable anonymous access: Yes
-Integrated Windows authentication: Yes
-Basic authentication: Yes
-Default domain: \

-Self-signed server certificate: Yes
-Require secure channel: No

Exchange virtual directory:
Authentication and access control
-Enable anonymous access: No
-Integrated Windows authentication: Yes
-Basic authentication: Yes
-Default domain: MYDOMAIN

Manually create a copy of the Exchange virtual directory. Right-click Exchange, go to All Tasks > Save Configuration to a File. Give it a name and save config to desktop. Right-click Default Web Site, go to New > Virtual Directory (from file). Browse to saved config of Exchange and click Read File. Config will appear in box below. Select it and then click OK. Name this new virtual directory “ExchApple”. Next, add new string value called “ExchangeVDir” (case is important) to this registry entry: HKLM > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > MasSync > Parameters. Modify the data value to “/ExchApple”. In the end you should have only two entries; one labeled “(Default)” and one labeled “ExchangeVDir”. Configure the ExchApple virtual directory as follows:
ExchApple virtual directory:
Authentication and access control
-Enable anonymous access: No
-Integrated Windows authentication: Yes
-Basic authentication: Yes
-Default domain: MYDOMAIN
Secure communications
-Require secure channel: No
-Ignore client certificates
Perform an IIS Reset.
Check to make sure you can log into your Exchange and OMA virtual directories via a web browser.
On the iPhone itself it was set up as follows:
Email: [email protected]
Server: OutsideIPAddress or URL
Username: me (without domain name)
Ignore all certificate errors when setting up the Exchange account on the phone. Just keep hitting next. I'm not using SSL so if you're not then turn that off after the account gets created. Make sure you have ports 80 and 443 open on your firewall and pointed to your Exchange server. Open up your inbox and sync your email.
This solution worked for me. If it doesn't then give the aforementioned people a call.

Is it possible to create a new-emailaddress policy with Exchange

A-ONE Solutions

Hi Siddharth
I want to create a new e-mailaaddress policy - and after that create linked mailboxes/users in my account domain with powershell.
Can you help me achieve that ?
I have a powershell CMDlet, but i doesn´t work. (Cannot fint user OU in my account domain)
CMDlet is as follows:
New-EmailAddressPolicy -Name $CustomerName -RecipientContainer "OU=$CustomerName, OU=kunder, DC=Domain, DC=local" -IncludedRecipients 'AllRecipients' -ConditionalCustomAttribute1 $CustomerName -Priority '1' -EnabledEmailAddressTemplates SMTP:%2g%1s@$AcceptedEmailDomain
Where $Customername = test.dk
and Account domain is = OU=kunder, DC=Domain, DC=local
But the command fails with:
New-EmailAddressPolicy : Couldn't find organizational unit "OU=Test.dk, OU=kunder, DC=Domain, DC=local". Make sure you have typed the name correctly.
At line:52 char:1
+ New-EmailAddressPolicy -Name $CustomerName -RecipientContainer "OU=$CustomerNa

So, I cannot find the OU on the Account forest/Domain, even though the OU do exists in the Account domain.
Verifying with this:
Get-ADOrganizationalUnit -Identity "OU=$CustomerName,OU=kunder,DC=Domain,DC=local" –Server ‘DC01.domain.local’| FL

• Another one with broadband at dial-up speeds

When I first connected to BT Broadband on Tuesday, all was well. Fast connection, good streaming.
Now it is down to dial-up speeds:
The results from BT Speedtest:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.1 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.05 Mbps-0.25 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3.97 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 0.14 Mbps
Details from Router log:
04:48:55, 26 Oct. (60193.730000) DSL is up
04:48:54, 26 Oct. (60192.780000) DSL noise margin: 22.00 dB upstream, 8.80 dB downstream
04:48:54, 26 Oct. (60192.710000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 3968 Kbps downstream
Running the "Silent LIne" test shows just that, silence.
This is in a house with three phone sockets, none of them a master. (All old style BT sockets, all with a filter.)
By contrast, I have another line running on the same cables from the same exchange that currently connects to the exchange at 7.87 and has an IP Profile of 6.5.
How do I get BT to investigate this? How long before I need to cancel the contract on the grounds that it is not delivering its promised speed?
I should add that the fast connection was made with an old Netgear router/modem, before the Home Hub arrived. I would swap that back in but the IP Profile is so low that it won't make any immediate difference.

Nope. Too rural for LLU.
SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Handcross (SDHNDCR) Exchange
Look at all those lovely red crosses. Last time anyone opened the door there to add anything seems to have been back in 2006.
Not rural enough, though, for any of those government sponsored broadband programmes.
Actually, I am amazed that TalkTalk can deliver a connection that is usually rock solid at speeds of up to 6 Mbps. The only problem is that when more than two people are on line, it slows to a crawl. That is one reason why I wanted to take up BT's seemingly generous offer.
But thanks all the same for the feedback and for the depressing news that BT is even worse than TalkTalk at dealing with customers. Guess I will just have to sit on my hands for another five days.

• Another one with slow speeds - sorry!

We have been BT BB customers for years and have been fine most of the time. We are supplied by an ADSL max exchange and we are about 1.5 miles away. In the last few days my download speeds are VERY variable sometimes taking minutes to load a page if at all, sometimes fine.
We have a Home Hub 3 with a master socket fitted with an i-plate, microfilters to all sockets were replaced last year.
I'm a bit clueless (better since I've been stalking on this board for the last few days)
Quiet test is - well quiet. No crackles, hisses or anything added.
I.m not aware of any connection drops, I do admit to one reset press. and there have been a couple of episodes of disconnection to attach to the test socket.
I have a fault reported with BT who say the problem is with my internal equipment and private engineer booked to fit me a ADSL service specific faceplate and trace my fault but TBH the price quoted might be more than I can afford so if you guys can help me I'd be very, very pleased.
Thank you in advance

• Another one with the "did not respond" error

Hi all,
We've been successfully video chatting with my parents using iChat AV for years on our old machine - an 800 MHz G4 iMac. We just upgraded to a new iMac with the Intel Core Duo processor, and now are getting the "did not respond" error that others are describing. Because nothing else has changed in the setup at either end other than our new machine, the problem must lie in the new iMac. After perusing this forum and Ralph's site, I tried setting the QuickTime streaming speed to 1.5 Mbps rather than "automatic," and turned off IPv6, but to no avail.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
The Rosses

Hi rossma,
If you go to System Preferences > Network and then
Select the Connection method in the second drop
down.
Then the TCP/IP tab
Does this say Using DHCP ?
Does it give you an IP of something close to
192.168.1.100 ?
Yes.
Does it list the "router" IP as being 192.168.1.1 ?
Yes.
If you connect the computer to the Toshiba what IP do
you get then ?
Does it match the same IP as when you go here
http://myip.dk/
Well, I didn't try disconnecting the iMac from the Linksys and hooking it up directly to the cable modem (would require wrestling with a nest of cables), but I can see the IP address that the Outside World sees in the Linksys configuration page, and that matches what the webpage you mentioned says. if you need me to connect it directly, let me know and I'll try that.
If it does then the Toshiba is in Bridge mode and the
Linksys may be doing the ISP login
I can not see the Toshiba in this list
http://portforward.com/routers.htm which is why I
think it is not routing and is in Bridge mode. (this
will mean all the ports are open in it).
If all ports are open, then the cable modem shouldn't be the problem, right?
As far as Quicktime is concerned it might pay to
check the Font Book and see if Helvetica is active.
Huh? This is the first I've heard of Helvetica being problematic! It's active at the moment - should I disable it?
Thanks for all your patience and effort on my behalf!

• Replacing a string of character by another one with emacs

Hello,
With Vim, I had something like this in my setup (tex.vim in ftplugin)
imap <buffer> ... \ldots
imap <buffer> « \og
imap <buffer> » \fg
imap <buffer> " \textquotedblleft
imap <buffer> ¢ \textquotedblright\
imap <buffer> € \EUR
imap <buffer>~ $\sim\
imap <buffer> // \\
imap <buffer> /np \newpage
Currently, I am trying emacs, and would like the same setup. I have searched the web, but with no luck. Indeed, I've just found the following code (and made some modifications to try it) :
(defun replace-string-pairs-region (start end mylist)
"Replace string pairs in region."
(save-restriction
(narrow-to-region start end)
(mapc
(lambda (arg)
(goto-char (point-min))
(while (search-forward (car arg) nil t) (replace-match (cadr arg)) )
) mylist
(defun replace-chars (start end)
"Replace "..." by "\ldots" and other similar chars"
(interactive "r")
(replace-string-pairs-region start end '(
("..." "\ldots")
;("<" "<")
;(">" ">")
But it doesn't work.
Does anyone know how could I replace "..." by "\ldots" and other things like that with Emacs ?
Last edited by alexandre (2010-09-28 17:48:50)

Thank you a lot for your answer, but my problem was not to replace "..." by "\ldots" after typing it, but how could I replace "..." by "\ldots" while I am typing it, just after I finished to push the last dot.
I have tried to set it up with the abbrev mode, but it seems to work only for words. So for example, if I enter the word such as, say, "arch", then it replace it automatically by "archlinux" after pressing the space key. I won't have to replace the string manually, it does it automatically with the abbreviation mode of Emacs. Here is an example of what I am talking about :
(abbrev-mode t) ; completion automatique
(global-set-key (quote [tab]) (quote dabbrev-expand))
(setq default-abbrev-mode t)
(define-abbrev-table 'global-abbrev-table '(
("..." "\ldots" t)
("arch" "archlinux" nil)
But my problem is, it doesn't work for "...", just for words. Of course, I could do it manually with the shortcut you wrote, but it would be nice to make it work automatically. Is there a way to do so ?
If you don't understand what I am talking about, try Vim, copy "imap <buffer> ... \ldots" in your .vimrc, and Vim will replace all "..." by "\ldots" while typing. I am sure I can do it with Emacs, I just don't know how.

• Another one with much higher BB usage than normal

Hi,
This is probably going to sound familiar to lots of people, but we also are recording much higher BB usage than normal. We are only on the 10gb package, as our max 512kb broadband doesn't make it worthwhile trying to do much with the www.
Our usage is usually pretty close to the 10gb, and in fact we have probably gone over it 3 or 4 times in the last 2 years (I work away a lot, so Skype gets hammered, which I know could be up to about 350mb/hour). Our average usage has been 9.87gb according to BT. I was home at the end of June, and decided to reactivate BT FON, and my wife and I also installed the Smarttalk app. Now, halfway through July, we are already up at over 7gb used.
The warning e-mail for 6gb used was last night, the usage monitor is already showing over 7gb - that is a heck of a lot of broadband usage for a property with such a slow connection. I have tried tackling BT in the past, and got absolutely nowhere, being told that although they could give me details of the previous weeks usage, they couldn't go back any further because that informaton was unavailable - unsatisfactory response, but that was all I could get.
Obviously BT are saying we could always go unlimited, but I'd rather find out what the issue is and why this sudden increase - we aren't using that much internet.

It's hard to keep a daily check, I would say impossible!

• Another one with flashing amber light on airport express...

New out the box airport express flashing amber...for first 30 seconds after plugin it holds amber steady then starts flashing...
Internet connection fine...using wireless for this iPad... have sky router/modem....sky hd + box connected to router via Ethernet...
Express situated approx 1m from router nothing blocking path...even placed side by side doesn't work...
Airport utility app says device not found...
Did try connecting express to router via Ethernet cable used with sky box but didn't work either...
Any ideas...would a reset be worth a try?
My sky tv is down because of problem with dish on roof...but because my wifi is working I don't see this being connected? Adsl for broadband and satellite for tv...

(running commentary)
Well that wasn't quite right...so will post for anyone who might find of value in future...
The express can be connected to speakers on the same wifi network that the ISP router provides, enabling simultaneous wifi net browsing on my iPad and wifi music through speakers via AirPlay etc....turns out that the method involved includes extending the existing wifi network, so if you want to buy an airport express v2 for primarily network extension, you do not need to connect it to to the ISP router via Ethernet to achieve this...I have done this at the same time as achieving my main aim of using with speakers...so that's def a bonus...and the same goes for each new express and speaker combo you set up around your house/mansion etc...

• Another one with bad looking text

Hi!
I want to place a text in a motion project, but when I increase the size it looks really bad. I think I saw somewhere that you could do something and it behaves more like its vectorbased so it looks sharp what ever the size, but I can't remember where it is. Could someone lead me?
Thanks so much
Morten

Text is a vector operation until you render. In Motion, sometimes when you apply certain effects or convert to 3D with some effects rasterization occurs and you have to read up on that carefully because it's confusing. Sorry, it confuses the heck out of me, maybe you can understand it. If you are brining in bitmapped or rasterized artwork and try to scale it, all you do is make the pixels bigger. Can't tell from your post what you are using for "text."

• Another one with iTune 9.2 issues

So I went to update my iPhone tonight, and received word from iTunes I needed to update to 9.2.1. Okay, easy right? HA! I have spent the last couple of hours trying to make it work, but as I've found here, I'm having issues like so many others.
The installation starts off fine until it gets to the end, then it says:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate patch to a folder containing the installation package'iTunes.msi' in the box below."
I click on the arrow by the box and here are the two directory options:
C:\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\Apple Software Update\
or
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 9.0.2.25
I looked in both of the listed options, and there's no iTunes.msi in either. Did a search on my computer and found:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 9.0.3.15\iTunes.msi
So I click on that pathway, hit OK, and this comes up:
"The file is not a valid installation package for the produce iTunes. try to find the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in a folder from which you can install iTunes."
So I tried the 9.0.2.25 pathway option, and it says that doesn't exist. I look in the folder, and there's every other previous update folder in there, but not 9.0.2.25 at all.
I then try to remove iTunes completely, starting in the Control Panel, and it does the same thing, so I can't remove it that way. I tried the advice on the iTunes Support website, and it didn't work.
Do I have a missing file that I need in order to make this all work? Is it something else? Or is this whole 9.2.1 update screwed?
Any help would be appreciated!

The fix for years on this error used to be using the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility as mentioned in this older thread
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1184144
Unfortunately MS has pulled it from their website. So unless you are lucky enough to have downloaded that tool before it was pulled, you need a new plan.
Other folks have mentioned using a program named Revo Uninstaller with success, to do the same thing the MS tool was doing.
I wonder - can you browse in windows Explorer to this path and just double-click the itunes.msi file?
Don't go through the Apple Software Update, in other words. Run the MSI file directly.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 9.0.3.15\iTunes.msi

• Another one with no audio...

Hi,
just switched to a new MBPro (not Retina), running Mountain Lion w/the latest update. After cleaning all the stuff I realized that most of the times I had no audio whatsoever - that is, sometimes as I rebooted the sound magically came back. Yes, the output is always correctly selected inand so on.
The Mac chimes when switched on, then I get no audio. All controls are grayed out, like a different output is selected. At first, after a search here and on other forums, I thought LogMeIn was to blame, so I painstakingly removed it and all of its drivers. Killed the coreaudiod and everything seemed OK, but at first "cold" boot everything turns back to mute.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I'm having same issues but i had new hard drive installed and installed lion it's a mute.. greyed out then upgraded to mountain lion same thing. contacted apple after 3 days of trying they told me it's hardware issue I DONT THINK SO...I have installed Windows and WOW sound EVERYWHERE! if it was my speaker i would not have internal sound in Windows. I THINK IT'S A DRIVER SOFTWARE / FIRMWARE ISSUE.. it's ******* me off. I'm about to be a Windows fan for life. Atleast WINDOWS it checks for drivers and lets me know what drivers i need. THE boot up sound is the sound on motherboard thats why you here the dings, not speaker related so of course that will bing but my OS IS SAYING NOTHING ABOUT INTERNAL SPEAKER INPUT ON OUTPUT SETTINGS EVERYTHING IS GREYED OUT. And cannot slide the volume controll either. IF YOU HAVE FIXED THIS PLEASE TELL ME. HOPE THIS HELPED YOU A LITTLE.
