Another router question.

I have a sweex wireless router at home and the ipad is picking it up fine. However, the service provider requires a username and password to connect to the internet.
How do I enter this information on the ipad? The router info is all there but where do I go to put in the IP address etc for the broadband provider?
I hope this question makes sense. If you are kind enough to reply, please keep it simple; I am not good with this stuff.

I would ask you IP provider of haw to connect. When you see the wireless SSID in the network setting it will only ask you to provide a password. Have you tied going in Safari and seeing if a page comes up asking for username and password?
How do you logon wit other devices? Do you go through a browser?

    I've got an odd question. I have BT Infinity and have the HG612 VDSL modem. Does anyone know if and how it can be configured to bridge its WAN connection to another router? For work I need site-to-site VPN access, which is performed by this other router. Unfortunately it needs to own the WAN address, so I need to configure the HG612 to bridge the address with it. Has anyone does this? Is the HG612 even capable of doing this?
    I can't find any user manuals on it.

  • Two quick VLAN routing questions

    lets say I have a L3 switch routing 4 VLANs
    VLAN 1 is 192.168.10.0/24, the switch's virtual interface is 192.168.10.254 inside this vlan
    VLAN 2 is 192.168.20.0/24, the switch's virtual interface is 192.168.20.254 inside this vlan
    VLAN 3 is 192.168.30.0/24, the switch's virtual interface is 192.168.30.254 inside this vlan
    VLAN 4 is 192.168.40.0/24, the switch's virtual interface is 192.168.40.254 inside this vlan
    there is only one router going out from this switch to the net, and lets say it is in VLAN 1 and it's address is 192.168.10.1
    first question-- inside of the L3 switch I will need to add a default route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.10.1
    so that all traffic not corresponding to a 192.168.x.x address knows where to get out to the net, correct?
    secondly- when configuring that router, is there a difference if I use the following static route:
    192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.10.254
    instead of
    192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.20.254
    either way, the packet gets to the L3 switch, but in one case it gets there via the VLAN interface inside of VLAN 1, and in the other case, it gets there via the VLAN interface inside of the VLAN for which the traffic is destined anyway. what im trying to figure out is, will this make any difference at all? especially in terms of broadcast packets?
    if it makes no difference, then is it safe to say that the following static route would be optimal?
    192.168.0.0 255.255.0.0 192.168.10.254

    Re "firstly". Correct. The L3 switch will route traffic according to its routing table. By default it knows all IP subnets to which it is directly connected to, i.e. all the VLAN subnets. If you have to add a default route manually or not depends on the exact implementation. It may well be that the L3 switch will use the any default gateway for routing which you use for the IP settings of the switch itself (if there is an option in the web interface to set a default gateway). If you cannot define a default gateway on the L3 switch you probably have to add a static route manually. The easiest way should be to check the current routing table and see if there is a default gateway or not.
    Re "secondly". A router can only forward packets to the next hop router. The next hop router must be connected to that router. The route "192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.10.254" is correct for a router with IP address 192.168.10.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 as 192.168.10.254 is connected to the router. "192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.20.254" is not correct. The router cannot learn the path to a specific subnet 192.168.20.0/255.255.255.0 by using a gateway in that subnet. It is not correct to use that kind of a route and you should not use it even if it might even work (because the router does a plain ARP request to find the MAC address of 192.168.20.254 and your L3 switch will respond to the ARP request even if it is on the internet of 192.168.10.254). The very moment when there would be another router between the 10 and 20 subnets it would not work anymore...
    Re your conclusion: I would recommend to keep four static routes for the existing subnets on the L3 switch instead of putting everything into a larger single subnet which includes a lot of addresses which are not connected there. Technically it works if you only use working IP addresses. But you will see some loops if you send something to 192.168.55.50 or similar. The gateway router will send it to the L3 switch which will send it back to the gateway. They should figure it's a loop but still I would not recommend this kind of setup... Add routes for each of the L3 switch subnet...

  • WRVS4400N 801.Q intra-vlan routing question

    Hi all,
    I have a question in regards to the 802.1Q intervlan feature on the WRVS4400N. My goal is to setup a test network with atleast 10 departmental VLAN(s). By reading the WRVS4400N's data sheet I know that it supports up to 4 VLAN(s). I decided to purchase a Linksys SRW224G4 since it can create more than 4 VLAN(s).
    With my previous Cisco experience I used to configure VLAN(s) on a Catalyst 2940 and trunk them to a Cisco 2501 series router by configuring trunk ports on the Catalyst and sub interfaces with 802.1q tagging on the routers.
    I was wondering if I could trunk 10 VLAN(s) from my SRW224G4 to my WRVS4400N?
    This is what I have tried to do so far
    On the SRW224G4 I configured 10 VLAN(s) and set port G1 as a trunk port to port 1 on my WRVS4400N.
    On my WRVS4400N I configured port 1 as a trunk port that accepts all frames.
    When I look at the LAN settings on my WRVS4400N it doesn't give me the option to configure gateways for my VLAN(s). Does this router only support 4 VLAN(s)? if it does is there another router I can look into that has the ability to support more than 4?
    I purchased the Linksys/Cisco small business series thinking that it can provide me with the basics to create a small network. I never thought the WRVS4400N would have a 4 VLAN limitation even when I trunk VLAN(s) from a switch.

    i'm new here and planning to do something similar to what you suggest.
    I also have a slm2024 on which i plan to create more than 4 vlans. I'm looking for a gigabit router to route all my network and act as dhcp server. I will connect the switch to the router by a trunk.
    In my setup only 4 of my vlans will need a dhcp server. So if my understanding is correct, the integrated dhcp will be able to serve those 4 vlans if they are created on the router. Is it correct ? In this guide http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/csbr/wrvs4400n/administration/guide/WVRS4400N_Admin_Guide_v2.pdf page 60, there is an illustration of dhcp configuration but i don't see anything allowing to select the vlan. How does it work in fact ?
    In my ideal setup, i would like to distribute a different subnet by vlan. Ex : 192.168.2.0 for vlan 2; 192.168.3.0 for vlan 3; etc...
    For the other vlans i would affect static IPs.
    Is this setup possible with this router ? If it's not, which other cisco router would you suggest me ?

    The Bridge mode function on the EA6300 does not bridge the Wifi AP radio to the network.
    The ethernet ports are bridged, and the router can see network devices and wifi devices connected to itand ping devices in both directions , but Wifi clients connecting to the unit running in bridge mode are not "bridged" to the network.

    Using the built in webpage of the router, all devices can be pinged.
    Ethernet RJ-45 devices plugged into it can ping the unit and pull up the units config webpage, but not ping wifi clients connected to it.
    Wfii devices connected to its access point radio, can pull up the units config webpage, but not ping ethernet RJ-45 devices connected to it.
    If there is a bridge, then the bridge is broken in half and not functional.

    I have a Netgear router in Bridge mode, and it works fine, connecting the wifi access point and RJ-45 ethernet clients together like it should be, so I know how Bridge mode... should work...
    But it doesn't on this unit, it is not working completely out the factory door.   It will bridge one Router to another via the RJ-45 ethernet ports, but its own AP radio is no longer bridged and connected (like when running in NAT
    Note that doing cascading  using NAT as described under "Cascading the Linksys router to another router (LAN-WAN)" works fine.

  • Connecting to mass storage and printers on another router

    I have my wireless router connected to another router that router is connected to the internet. My wireless connection works fine getting to the internet, but I am unable to see the other items connected to the first router. This would be my network printer and mass storage. What can I do?

    Windows uses a protocol called SMB to connect to network shares. You will need to route ports 139, 445, and possibly 137 between the 2 networks. Unless you have a specific reason I would dump the non-wireless router. Having 2 routers is asking for problems and making your network overly complicated.

  • Added another router to UC320 W network

    We are currently using a UC320W for our router, phone system, and wireless.  We are wanting to add a device for VPN connections.  I was wanting to find out if we could disable the routing on the UC320 W and just have it on the lan and the wireless as an Access Point?  Basically install another firewall or router in front of it to handle the routing, dhcp, dns, and vpn connections.  Has anybody attempted this?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    We've not found a way to disable the routing on the UC320. What we ended up doing was giving the UC320 its own public IP, then disable the DHCP/DNS options for it and place another router (a pfSense firewall) in parallel with it.

  • A bridge? A switch? Another router?

    I had a internet modem connected via ethernet cable to a Linksys router (the wireless ability had been deactivated) and then I ran from the Linksys one ethernet cable to one Apple Express (N) and another ethernet cable to another Apple Express (b/g for some G3 Macs). The internet stopped working so I plugged the modem directly into the N Apple Express. I guess I need to get rid of the Linksys. What should I get to replace it so I can run the N and the B/G Apple Expresses again? A bridge? A switch? Another router?

    When you plugged your Express devices into the Linksys router, did you first configure them to act as a "bridge"?. In other words, the Connection Sharing setting in AirPort Utility must be set to "Off (Bridge Mode).
    You would need to do this for both Express devices as follows:
    Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon at the top of the setup page
    At the bottom of the next page, look for the setting for Connection Sharing. This must be set to "Off (Bridge Mode) whenever the device is plugged into a router.
    Chances are, your Linkys is fine and the Express devices were not correctly configured to connect to the Linksys. If you connected the Expresses to your old Apple router (I'm assuming it has LAN ethernet ports as well), they will be configured the same way. So, whether you use the Linksys or the Apple, configure your Express devices as above.
    So, your network will look like this:
    Modem > Router > Express Devices > Computers can connect by wireless or they can connect by ethernet to the Router.

    Yes, it is doable.
    You can setup virtual server either by IP or by name.
    If you have one IP, and want to set them up by name (ex. http://project1, http://project2, http://project3) you can do so easily with this type of configuration:

      </virtual-server>
    ....The important part here is that
    a) all virtual servers share the same HTTP listener
    b) which virtual server serves the request depends on the $HOST request header send by the client. Sun Web Server does the matching for you. It will match $HOST vs. the virtual server's host attribute. Depending on which site you connect to the right virtual server will be used.
    c) if the $HOST request header does not match any of the virtual servers, then the default virtual server defined in the HTTP listener will be used.
    To create a virtual server, use the Admin GUI, access the configuration, and then add new virtual server. Or use the following CLI command.
    wadm> create-virtual-server --config=myconfig --http-listener-name=http-listener-1 --document-root=/www/docs/myserver.com --host-pattern=myserver.com --log-file=../logs/myserver.com-error_logs myserverHost pattern will be used for matching. Some of this elements might be optional.

  • Possible to simultaneously use time capsule for backup + another router for internet?

    I will soon be moving into an apartment in which my landlord provides wireless internet through her own router.
    I also have my own Time Capsule, which I'd like to continue to use to back up my Mac via Time Machine.
    Is it possible to connect to both my Time Capsule (for backup only) and another router (for internet only) at the same time?
    If not, can anyone suggest a good workaround?

    You cannot wirelessly connect to two different wireless devices at once on one client. You need to either have a second wireless client in the laptop.. for instance a USB stick which can be fairly tiny nowadays. It is just you need to find one with Mac drivers. Or the TC must have internet connectivity. You could get that by buying a wireless bridge, and using that in your room, with the TC plugged into it. Universal wireless bridge devices are fairly cheap, but can be a pain to setup. Look for products that work with the main router and use as fast a speed as possible. It can be a tricky setup as you need the wireless bridge working on one channel and the TC working on another. What I am suggesting is the WDS solution you found but using two different boxes to do it. And not using WDS at all, unless the main router is suitable, but rather universal bridge.
    The hassle of all that suggests to me,, I would go for the wireless stick, so your Mac laptop has two wireless clients.

    An ethernet connection to the TC is far superior solution albeit would require you to plug and unplug it.

  • EA6300 and Another Router

    I have a 6300 router configured and setup.  It is working good. This is my main router. Most of the devices in my house, connect to this router.   This router ONLY provides limited information such as which device is "online" and "offline".   Also, this router provides basic network information.  This router may be suitable for some people but doesn't give me the overall picture I need in my house. 
    Due to the lack of "realtime" information this router doesn't provide, I would like to add another router.   I am looking at the Skydog router to act as the main router and handle all of the "management" functions.  The Skydog router provides "realtime" information which the EA6300 doesn't give me.  When I speak of "management", I am saying that I need more detail on wireless devices in my house.   I need to know which device is used by which user, how long this user has been "online" and which sites the user has been hitting.   The 6300 router doesn't provide this information.  
    Basically, I would like to have the Skydog router be the main router.  The 6300 router would act as an wireless extender. Look at this setup:
    Garage (Modem-------Skydog) >>>> Office computers (EA6300

  • Why was I sent another router?

    I called Verizon recently to cancel my TV service and received another router today. The guy I spoke with understood that I was in a "double play" plan, which means I already *had* FiOS internet. I then received an email that explained the first month charges, which alarmed me, but after speaking with someone else, they assured me those charges would not apply to me. I hope I am not charged for this additional router that I didn't ask for. Could I drop it off at a Verizon store? Sidenote: This router is in worse condition than the one I currently have (which was brand new when I got it). This new one has the model number rubbed off and whatnot. Why send me a used one?

    Go to your computer (if you have itunes on your computer) and log into iTunes that way. It'll tell you if you need to change things.

  • Questions on using a WRT110 on a network with another router

    i dont know all the terminology for what im trying to do here so please bear with it and ill try to make it simple.
    so i just got a wrt110 to replace a dlink i had that kept having the wireless go out on it.
    the set up i had [and am trying to get back to] was like this:
    an 8 port router going to a bunch of computers and into another room where it connected to a wireless router [WRT110] that in turn connected to a few other devices.
    the set up i had before made it so that the main 8port router 192.168.0.1 would do dhcp and that passed through to the wireless router. that way everything was on the same 192.168.0.X network
    what my problem now is that i dont know how to get the linksys WRT110 to passthrough the DHCP to things connected to it. so the 8port does DHCP and everything connected to that is 192.168.0.X but everything connected to WRt110 is 192.168.1.X so its like 2 seprate networks.
    does anyone know what im trying to do is called? and anyone know how to do it?

    Connect a computer straight to the WRT110 Router, Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop) connected to the WRt110 Router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
    On the main Setup page change the Router's IP Address/IP Address to 192.168.0.2(this address should be unique) and Disable the DHCP Server and click Save Settings, wait for 1 minute, unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
    Connect the WRT110 Router from Ethernet Port 1 to the 8 Port Router on it's Ethernet Port or LAN Port...
    Now computer's connecting to the WRT110 Router will get the IP Address from the 8 Port Router in the Range of 192.168.0.x...
