Another temp question on MBPr 15...211F peak operating temp?

Hello, I know this is a somewhat redundant question, but my own situation is slightly different from other situations.
I purchased a MBPr a few days ago (11,3 with the 2.5 i7 quad.) This is my fourth MBP. All have ran hot as I realize the aluminum casing works differently than a plastic casing, but this particular one runs a bit hotter than the 2011 8,2 (2.3 GHz i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 SSD, 1 GB GPU, OS X Mavericks) it replaced, and the fans wait for higher temperatures to ramp up. The CPU die temp can elevate to a peak of 211F under max load (measured with iStat Menus, which I assume is not totally accurate), and the fans themselves wait until a higher temp to ramp up compared to my previous computers. By peak load I mean running statistical software to crunch a large dataset for an extended period that maxes the CPU and has pushed every Mac I have ever owned above 200F for brief periods. The difference is that the other Macs were right around 200-204F, where as this rMBP is 210-211.
Under moderate load, it maintains a reasonably cool working temp of 110-150F depending what I am doing, which is more or less the same as my previous model. It manages to do this with much lower fan speeds, which I assume is due to the more efficient design of the Retina models. The outer casing remains cooler than my previous model. Functionally this computer is fantastic, and it is not throttling CPU performance at these higher temps.
The Apple Store is quite a drive, and Apple Tech Support told me they are unable to tell me if this is or is not within normal operating temps, which is rather frustrating as I am 80% sure this is not a problem at all. But given this is a $3,000 investment, I prefer to ask others.
So I ask you, is this something worth being concerned about, or is this within acceptable operating parameters? TIA.

I cannot give you a definitive answer but be aware that there is a thermal protection circuit that will shut down the MBP before it commits Hari Kari.

I am surprised that the Apple support would not commit to an answer.  If I were in your position, I would ask what is the thermal shut down temperature for your model MBP.  I would think they should be able to answer that question.

  • Normal operating temp

    Hi all,
Quick question. What's the normal operating temp of a Powerbook G4 (I believe I have the FW 800 model) after it's been running for a while? Mine gets particularly hot (140 F according to the SysStat widget) and it's just occuring to me that perhaps my fan is broken. Is there anyway I can tell if the fan is broken? Thanks.

    Hi Elizabeth..
You can do the hardware check if you think that your fan is too laud. But 140F is completly normal if you PB is working hard. I also posted similar post here when I got my PB, but then some guy wrote that it's normal when the machine is used for long time and with high load. He also wrote that Apple somewhere claims that it will never go over 143F or something like that.... anyways when I monitored mine it realy didn't exceed that number he wrote... so you dont have to worry... I use my PB for music production (at least trying to make someting and it is constantly hot and also sometimes in bad ventilated places and in a year of useage I never had a single problem with it.

  • Another newb question: multiple virtual servers

Hi, I have yet another ignorant question. I have several unrelated web projects that I am working on, and I would like to be able to set up a virtual server for each one for testing purposes, such as: http://project1, http://project2, http://project3. Can someone tell me if this is doable, and if there are any tutorials/resources on this for someone who has 0 experience running a web serer? Sorry for being so ignorant!

    Yes, it is doable.
You can setup virtual server either by IP or by name.
If you have one IP, and want to set them up by name (ex. http://project1, http://project2, http://project3) you can do so easily with this type of configuration:
    <virtual-server>
        <name>mydomain</name>
        <http-listener-name>http-listener-1</http-listener-name>
        <host>*.mydomain.com</host>
        <document-root>/www/domain</document-root>
      </virtual-server>
      <virtual-server>
        <name>myotherdomain</name>
        <http-listener-name>http-listener-1</http-listener-name>
        <host>*.myotherdomain.com</host>
        <document-root>/www/myotherdomain</document-root>
      </virtual-server>
....The important part here is that
    a) all virtual servers share the same HTTP listener
    b) which virtual server serves the request depends on the $HOST request header send by the client. Sun Web Server does the matching for you. It will match $HOST vs. the virtual server's host attribute. Depending on which site you connect to the right virtual server will be used.
    c) if the $HOST request header does not match any of the virtual servers, then the default virtual server defined in the HTTP listener will be used.
To create a virtual server, use the Admin GUI, access the configuration, and then add new virtual server. Or use the following CLI command.
wadm> create-virtual-server --config=myconfig --http-listener-name=http-listener-1 --document-root=/www/docs/myserver.com --host-pattern=myserver.com --log-file=../logs/myserver.com-error_logs myserverHost pattern will be used for matching. Some of this elements might be optional.
Hope that helps. And keep the questions coming :D

    1. I didn't know the answer to your first question, but I googled it and it says the item is the in-call audio boost.

    2. isn't this setting determined by the carrier? So it's not a setting in the phone, but when you call in to your voicemail you can change your options?

  • Average Temps Question

What should be the average temps for my cpu and my system be, and if my HS feels hot to the touch should I add more arctic Silver to my CPU. My CPU temps is at 47'c and my sys temp 39'c

The trick with AS, well any thermal paste is to use the absolute minimum to give your the best contact between CPU and HSF. Make sure it is level and there are no air pockets.

  • 7950 TF 3GOC Temp Question

    Hey all.
Been using my 7950 TF 3G OC for a few months now and have been enjoying the hell out of it.  I even upgraded my motherboard to an MSI Z77 board and Ivy Bridge CPU.  Temperatures in my case have never been lower under load compared to my old AMD CPU.
However I was looking at my GPU idle temperature and it sits around 49c-50c and under Kombuster it gets around 80c and the fans ramp up to about 80%
Is this normal performance of the 7950?  I've had some bad MSI cards in the past but luckily the RMA folks fixed me up with replacements.  I'm just afraid my thermals are a bit higher than they should be. It's stable for my multiple hour gaming sessions unlike some previous MSI cards that have gone bad and I've never even noticed it until recently. so I  must ask:
    7950 TF 3G OC
    50C @ Idle
    82C @ 100% Load
Is this Okay? Should I do something about it?
    Thanks!

And your 3570K's temp also looks normal  but your 7950'e temp is not quite normal ... at idle it should be under 40c.
Btw have you try to run your PC with side panel leave to open? How your HD7950 temp??

  • Early 2009, 24" iMac: What are normal operating temps?

My iMac overheats and automatically shuts down frequently.  Sometimes, just watching a movie on Quicktime causes the CPU to top 80C and cause a shutdown.  Fans never run faster than 3500-3600rpm.
Another thing that I noticed, is that the hiutil process runs twice a day using 100% of my processor, and always causes an overheat and shurtdown.
Can anyone direct me to normal operating temps for this model iMac, or advise what may be worng?
This sreenshot displays temps (Celcius) with only Safari running.  With uTorrent running (not actually feeding peers), and Quicktime, I get an overheat.
    TEMPS                                   FANS
HD Macintosh   54                Optical drive   801rpm

    CPU Heatsink   60

    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256 MB
    Running Mountain Lion 10.8.

Your temps are somewhat high, but still within acceptable levels.
I would be more comfortable seeing many of the temps in the 40 degree Celsius range.
Your CPU temps are on the high side and probably why your CPU fans are running high.
When was the last time you clear out any of the dust, lint and fine dirt particles from your iMac.
IF you've never done this, you need to completely unplug your iMac, find a heavy blanket or towel to lay your iMac, face down on the soft material. Using a special electronics vacuum, a portable, plug in vacuum or standardnhiuse vacuum with hose and attchments, using either the bare hose end or crvice tool, carefully and slowly vacuum all air intake and exhaust vents, openings and all of the ports to get rid of as much fine dust, dirt and lint as possible.
Do not use a vacuum attachment with brushes. This could cause a problem with random static charges.
Once this is done, re-setup your iMac, plug all your peripherals in and then do an SMC reset by plugging in your iMac to power. Wait 5 seconds, then power up your iMac.
Then report back here with any changes in temps.

Basically you need to have the COMPUTER at 50 or above. It's mainly to keep the condensation from forming and shorting something out or the hardware inside from expanding too fast and breaking/cracking from heating up too quick.
It's the worst case scenario but why take the chance. It mainly depends on the humidity. If your in a dry State then not too big an issue but if your in the NW or SE then could be a problem.
Next time when you first get home just bring the computer upstairs and by the time you get things situated it should have warmed up enough.
    Enjoy your stay....

  • What are typical operating temp ranges?

I have the new 27" imac the MC813. I have iStat pro and Im wondering what the average temps people see that are ok. Mine seem high and Im worried once I start processing HD movies and burning them Im going to kill this thing.
    Thank you in advance

I don't own an iMac, and the temps are different between desktops and notebooks (which I own).  Since I do not know the answer, what I can do to assist you best is to suggest googling "operating temp iMac 27" or something along those lines.  I did find some answers.  Also, since it is new (assuming is has been owned for less than 90 days). you can call AppleCare (if a # is available for your country, you can check here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 )and get the answer directly from the source.  Good luck and I hope you get your answer

  • Normal operating temps. for MacPro2,1, 3GHz Xeon, 8 core?

Does anyone know where I can find a chart or a list of normal operating temps. for the MacPro2,1, 3GHz Xeon, 8 core?
I can't seem to find anything online. Thanks for any help.

I think Hardware Monitor would tell you what and may have a database.
Intel obviously. Just look up the processor for TCASE and TJMAX
More interested in what YOURS are and FBDIMM temps are often the most helpful.
Considering how many people are upgrading theirs to X5355s, redoing thermal paste, there is a lot of info out there.

  • Sigh, Another temp question

Ok, so maybe these temps are not bad.  But it's still aggravating to know people have lower temps than I do with just fans.
My system temp is about 29-30C.  My cpu is at 45C idle and about 47-48C load.  now, i have the zalman 7000a al/cu and it keeps the CPU the same temperature as the stock fan.  why is that?  I have one 120mm fan up front, the thermaltake blue fan.  one 120mm fan in the back, the antec fan that came with the case.  I also got a slot fan that blows upward into the case.  My PSU has 3 fans on it.  Why have my temps not gone down from stock fan?  Do i want my intake fan to be stronger or weaker than my exhaust fan?

Well First of all 45C at Idle is Freakin just Fine!! , and second, Dont Believe Everything that People Say Because I myself have read some Peoples CPU temps, as being 2 degrees warmer than my House also , and Maybe they are keeping their Houses at 20C or better yet Keeping their PC's in the Garage , as Long as your Idle temps are Below 50C and your Stress temps are below 60C, (Or just dip into the early 60's for a short time) then you are FINE!!! , Dont Stress yourself over something that is NOT going to effect your Performance one Bit ....Life is too Short.....Enjoy your Cool Running PC ..And did you use my "White Goop" on the Zalman? Or that Artic Cement Crap?............Sean REILLY875

  • NF750-G55 temp question

hello all. im having a bit of an issue here. ive had this board for a few months now and ive just noticed this icon labeled motherboard temp.  what is this exactly?  ive included a screen shot.  it says 82c.  thats a little high isnt it?  could it be a malfunctioning sensor.   im using the latest stable version of HWINFO32.  i also have a question about another sensor.  the mcp temp.  would this be the northbridge temp?
    any help would be greatful.
    pc specs:
    amd [email protected]
    8gb gskill @1333mhz
    asus 560ti 950/1900/2200
    msi nf750-g55 mbo
    corsair ax850 psu

I'm seeing oddball temps too on one sensor...
    driving me nuts, it is.
    HWINFO64 shows:
CPU: 39 (I'm running prime95 on it to test for stability...)
    Auxillary:29
    Motherboard:109
They are fluctating, so I know it's measuring SOMETHING... but 109C?  Damn baby cook eggs on that!
Where on the motherboard is this sensor?
The heatsink to the REAR of the cpu slot is not hot, the one by the PCI/PCIE slots is pretty warm to the touch...
