Antivirus, Internet security, and anti-spyware

Does anyone have any good suggestions for products that are a must have for Mac?? I'm getting a new MacBook Pro and I want it protected. Thanks so much!

Viruses? Not on a Mac.
But it is possible for a Mac to pass on to a Windows user a windows virus received via email and then forwarded. This can be avoided by installing the free anti-virus app ClamXav:
http://www.clamxav.com/
Recently 'Trojans' on a Mac have been the subject of some discussion:
Whilst no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions, the appearance of Trojans that can infect a Mac seems to be growing.
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X. One of the first of these was called DNSChanger Trojan and is also known as OSX.RSPlug. A Trojan Horse, the software attacks users attempting to play a fake video file.
Upon attempting to play the video, the victim received the following message:
“Quicktime Player is unable to play movie file.
Please click here to download new version of codec.”
Upon running the installer, the user's DNS records are modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
SecureMac's DNSChanger Removal Tool allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More information on Mac security can be found here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
More on Trojans on the Mac here:
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
The latest news on the subject, from July 25, 2008, is:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.

That's because you must be trying to download a Windows application, and they do not run on a Mac unless you are running Windows on the Mac.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
For adware removal see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Tool.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Can anyone recommend a GOOD and RELIABLE anti-virus and anti-spyware ?

I am looking for virus protection (even though I know I am safe, in theory) and anti-spyware software. Can anyone recommend anything that is really good? It doesn't have to be an all-in-one thing, if any of you can recommend two different applications that'll be alright

    Greetings,
Like the OP states ClamX and MacScan, along with Integos stuff is out there. ClamX is free, but the other stuff costs.
I have tested the full versions, as we have purchased them all, and I have a machine unprotected buy a corporate firewall, on a private network/internet access, and I have yet to find a virus or malware in my day to day use. I imaging there are some around, I just haven't seen any legitimate ones.
Mac Scan can detect tracking cookies, and everyone can collect those unless you block all cookies and stuff.
It's up to you, but if I were you and you had reason to be concerned, I'd look at Intego's "Internet Security Barrier" as it has it all in one package, but like all of these kinds of packages, you will take a bit of a performance hit.
My main machine at work had ClamX, and Little Snitch, and that is all, at home I have Little Snitch and I have never been hit - maybe someday, but not any time soon. The test machine has Intego's stuff on it currently.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Antivirus/Internet Security recommendations

Any suggestions/recommendations on antivirus / internet security for my L505D-S5983. Norton comes with the system for 30 days  .. however Best Buy suggested and gave me (6) months of Trend Micro's antivirus and AntiSpyware at no charge  ... Any thoughts and recommendations are appreciated  ..  Thanks

we use Avast! as our antivirus... we also use firefox with the adblockplus and noscript addons... most all of our other protections are handled by our extensive firewall setup...
you might also want to take a look at sunbelt software's offerings... i've been following them for years and they have excellent products and support... their new vipre technology is also a lot better, faster, and less memory hungry than any other package out there... for those that i've set up with sunbelt's stuff, all have been very happy and have stayed with them...
why don't we use sunbelt's stuff ourselves? we don't need it with our setup

  • Firewall+AntiVirus+Internet Security

I'm going to buy an iPad mini+Wifi+Cellular. But because I often do banking payments and web browsing, I'd like to install a firewall+antivirus+internet security on it. I've heard iPad does not need to security software, but I'd like install a one.
Which software is the best for it?
What's your opinion about VirusBarrier (Intego)?

The iPad needs no such software. All you are likely to find are worthless time- and money-wasters that will not protect you from anything.
What's your opinion about VirusBarrier (Intego)?
If you are asking about the OS X program, it is garbage. It is the only such utility that I determined to be completely unacceptable due to its horrendous effects on performance.
If you are asking about the iPad app, it is also garbage. I suggest you read its reviews:

  • Antivirus, internet security for macs

i"ve heard that macbooks doesn't need internet security or anti virus, How true is this since I saw a Norton security product for macs?

Since there is nothing for the AV software to do on a Mac, they just cause problems. Most AV software is greater hazard then the things they claim they are protecting you against.
    Don't install any.

  • Is apple working on a fix so it plays nice with internet security and filtering programs?

    Question is in the title.
The conflict that causes us to disable internet security and filtering programs to get iTunes Store to open. Is that planning on being resolved?

None of us know, and you won't get an answer from Apple on here. We are users just like you. Although not everyone has problems with that, I know I didn't when I used iTunes on my PC.

  • Scheduling Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware scans with Internet Security Suite

When I installed Verizon Internet Security Suite, the scan schedule for Anti-Virus was set to a default time of: Weekly at 12:00 am on Saturday. The Anti-Spyware scan was default scheduled weekly at 12:00 am on Sunday.
I don't want the scans done at this time. So I rescheduled them to run at 5:00 am instead of 12:00 on each day.
This didn't work. Even though when I look at the schedules for those programs, it shows the times I put in. But it still ignores the times I scheduled and always starts up both programs at 12:00. This is very inconvenient for me. How do you debug this?
Message Edited by Joanna_M on 03-30-2009 04:02 PM

I know what you mean. I have the same problem, here it is 6:31 am and I am awake and on my pc when all of a sudden verizon's virus scan pops up and starts it's scan. I scheduled that for 12:01 am. Plus not to mention the other day it said I have a virus but it couldn't repair it so it quaranteed it, then when I clicked on find out more information about this virus the page said it will be available soon. I did a search of the virus on radialpoints website and it couldn't tell me the virus either and then I found out through google that is actually a trojan and wrote a bunch of keys to the registry but the website never said what to do about it, whether to delete those keys or not.
I don't like to delete registry keys unless I am sure.
I used to have Norton installed and its virus scan used to do some odd things to. Like forget! Symantec said it was windows fault because it uses task scheduler.
I am seriously thinking about dumping this verizon suite if they don't fix it real soon and get their website's up and running!!!

  • Trouble connecting playbook to windows PC when using AVG Internet Security and USB cable ?

I have spent ages trying to get my PC (windows 7 64bit ) to talk to the Playbook. I found the following:
Windows device manager sees the playbook and will let me back up and restore but not to see the files on the Playbook. Desktop software says problem with connection. On the "computer" window it shows drives but not the Playbook. Only hard drive and DVD drives. Looks like AVG is blocking the USB and as yet they have not come up with a solution and latest software wont let you manually configure the firewall other than allow and block (previous versions allowed you to config inbound and outbound rules)
Elsewhere on the forums a solution was provided but it meant leaving the firewall set to "off" or "allow all" which really is a waste of time having a firewall at all.
Please try this and see if it resolves your problems, It sorted it for me !
    Remove AVG Internet Security 2014
Load AVG antivirus 2014 ( freeware) so now you are OK for antivirus protection
Load Microsoft Security Essentials (freeware) so now you are  OK for firewall protection
Playbook now talks and can be configured, also the contents of the playbook drive can be seen alongside your PC drives and DVD drives in the "computer" window of your PC  The playbook drive has now been allowed to be mounted where as it was blocked before
I know how frustrating this can be I have spent ages on it ..so give it a try

The USB-parallel cable needs a driver that supports Windows 7 x64 in addition to the driver the printer needs.  Additionally make sure the port settings are correct, usually the port will be something like USB001: or USB002: for the USB-parallel port. Some cables may provide a virtual LPT port such as LPT3:.  Check the documentation for your unit for details.
The posts here list models of USB-parallel ports folks here have had success with in Windows 7.

  • I've just downloaded FF 4 beta, do i still need to purchase internet security software & anti-virus software for protection?

I have not renewed my McAfee. i am not sure whether FF 4 beta security protection is good enough. I do internet banking often. do i still need to have other security or anti-virus software?

Firefox is just a web browser, you still need anti-virus, anti-malware and firewall protection.

  • I have a problem with my Internet Security and the new Firefox, where can I get the previous version which I had before my system crashed?

Hi I use CA Internet Security Suite which checks ALL pages and searches, but it does not work with this version, also I wish to use Goggle Toolbar which ALSO does not work with this version where can I get the previous version? As my harddrive crashed I have had to install windows 7 and this version doesn't seem to allow me to change my homepage, why is this? Cheers Ernest

You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com

  • Internet Security and Virus Protection

I am brand spanking new to the Mac world. Just bought a beautiful 27" iMac last week. My question, Is there a need for virus protection/internet security software with macs?? I have long heard the possible myth that macs dont get virus'. Is this true?? If not, what is best that uses the least memory to run??
I have long loved AVG for windows

Is there a need for virus protection/internet security software with macs?? I have long heard the possible myth that macs dont get virus'. Is this true??
It is true that there are no Mac viruses at this time. There are a few trojans, but these are very rare and have threat levels ranging from low to none. See my [Mac Virus guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/macvirus> for more details on this.
As to internet security, one never knows when a new exploit will be discovered, but Macs are pretty secure. I've never used any kind of internet security software and have never needed it. Just use that internet filter that's between your ears and you'll be fine. There are also a couple good general security documents linked to at the end of my virus guide that will be good reads for this purpose.

  • Norton internet security and IE 64 bit

Hi guys                              HP Touchsmart 300-1125uk win 7 64 bit
    2 Questions for you !
The first is, i have norton internet security 2012 installed, so why does it not cover touchsmart, version 4 no norton shows on the screen.
2nd Question internet explorer 64 bit you cannot get any toolbars, well saying that i know of only 1 google.
The problem being when you install google toolbar 64 bit, it takes over everything else, when you go back to IE 32 BIT.
Its taken over that too and resets your homepage to google on 32 bit.
1 More thing youtube for touchsmart, we don't have it.
Any help would be most welcome
    Thank you
    wob

You are correct about IE 64-bit having limitations, there is no solution, that's why Win7 also has a 32-bit Internet Explorer with it for compatibility. Personally? it's a lot safer to run IE-64 and not have any toolbars which IMNSHO are 99% crap.
If Norton shows in the system tray of WIndows it's installed, it doesn't need to do anything special to also protect the Touchsmart applications, it's not another OS, just an application.

  • Integrating Northon Internet security and virus protection

How can I integrate Norton internet Security with Thunderbird?
When I was using Outlook Express Norton was scanning the messages, sort the spam, removed the infected or malware messages and store them in different folders.
Now even some my good messages are moved to "Junk folder" at random!
    Please help!

You don't want to let Norton do that, it will sooner or later cause problems with Thunderbird. You'll risk your Inbox being quarantined, and your mail files being corrupted. This will ultimately result in messages getting lost.
Check this article for more information about training your junk mail controls.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Junk_Mail_Controls
Messages containing malware do not impose any risk while just sitting in your Inbox. As long as you don't open them, don't open attachments from unknown sources, and don't click on links, nothing will happen.
