Any iMac 24-inch horror stories or is it all good so far?

Hi all,
I've been looking around these forums for a while, as I've been updating my iMac. I had a G5 1.9GHz with iSight cam which I got in December last year (just a few weeks before Apple released the Core Duo version, I was very miffed), and decided to get a MacBook Pro (see spec listed in the signature). However, I have experienced one or two problems. One, heat (well, only to be expected), two, a very strange metalic clicking noise every 40 seconds or so from the hard drive (no one seems to know what it is and at a guess it seems to be that it's the hard drive actuator in free flight (i.e. not under correct control of it's servo mechanism) hitting the end stop and three my System Preferences icons keep going a little odd and I keep having to trash a pref file and reboot to solve it.
As you can guess, I am wondering if there may have been a better answer to my problem and wondered (as I was very impressed with it when I saw it at the Apple Retail Store the other day) how people are getting along in 64-bit Core 2 Duo land with the newer iMac's and especially the 24-inch model! Anything to report (especially stuck/dead pixels, as I had a lot of problems with them on my previous iMac's), or is everything going smoothly?
Just curious!
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2.0GHz Core Duo / 512MB / 80GB / 15" Glossy

Well, an update. I reinstalled OS X, and everything seems fine except for Front Row. Apparently, from what I read over at the Front Row forum, there is some kind of glitch going on. I'll be posting about it over there. The only other thing that was off, and this is minimal in my estimation, was the Mighty Mouse that came with the iMac. It buzzes. I connected it to two other Macs, and it continued to buzz (or make a weird buzz/whir sound combined. Something funky in the mouse I gather.
The screen is gorgeous, no dead pixels, no dark spots. I'm using User Switching, and made accounts for my wife and my son. The switching is working vey nicely. I screwed up the transfer of my work music library to iTunes and had to start from scratch (having lost all the playlists, etc. Oh well. The bigger hassle again is that Front Row seems to think some songs are not authorized.
So, it has been working well, and handling all the apps I've run so far without a hitch. I've used the whole iLife suite, including iWeb. I used a non-intel native Photoshop CS and it works quite well. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Pages, Keynote, Final Cut Pro, Omniweb, Firefox, iBank, FileMaker Pro Advanced 8.5, and a host of other apps. Fast loading (the 2Gb of RAM helps).
This beauty is also super quiet. No clicks, no whirring sounds, no buzzing, no cracking, and hardly any sound of accessing disk or anything. It has proven quite silent. Bright as all get out, and I find my eyes working hard at trying to take in all the screen or move around it, but I have to adjust ergonomically to this larger screen.
The remote is fine, it sticks to side and does not fall. The speakers sound strong, much more so than I expected, but the positioning could be improved (pointing downward is not very effective). The Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 have not arrived (I expect them tomorrow), but I will post as soon as I test them. The DVD player handled DVDs with ease, and it was a pleasure to watch.
I'm using a wireless mouse that the iMac had no trouble recognizing, but the mouse at times feels a bit jittery, as if it wants to roam a bit. The iMac also had no trouble recognizing my Samsung t-509 via bluetooth, but of course, iSync won't sync with this particular phone. Samsung just doesn't seem to want to play nice.
One complaint: I wish OS X gave me more flexibility with parental controls. I want to set up a user account for games only, but would prefer to leave the games in the shared folder so all users can see them, etc., add more flexibility to what my son can see and do (make more folders visible). Maybe I just have to figure it out.
Oh, and I need to find some seriously large desktop pics! The other ones I had just don't cut it with this large screen size!
Have fun folks!

  • I am going to buy a new Imac. Will my old hp pcs 2210  all in one printer be compatible?

ALSO....what is the differnece betw I Mac(PPC0 and I Mac (intel based) ?

    Welcome!
I'm asking the Hosts to move your post because of the "PPC/Intel" confusion you encountered, which is poor forum labeling on Apple's part. The processors used in iMacs prior to 2006 were PowerPC (thus the "PPC" nickname) made by Motorola and occasionally IBM. Since 2006, all iMacs have been fitted with processors made by Intel Corp. Very different computers, so there are separate forums. Any iMac you buy new is Intel.
So all the iMac this forum covers were made before 2006; that's why I'm asking the Hosts to move you to the forum for newer iMacs where people with more modern units may have specifi experience with that printer.
Have you searched the HP site? I looked and I see drivers only for up to Mac OS 10.6. This page:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01664444&lc=en&cc=us&destPa ge=document&dlc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_usen#N617
shows the PCS 2200 series is supported for print only under 10.7. So if you need more than printing, you'll need a newer device.

  • I'm still using Snow Leopard because heard too many horror stories about upgrading to Lion. But I can't upgrade Safari unless I upgrade OS. Is Mavericks any better than Lion?

I'm still using Snow Leopard OS because I heard too many horror stories about people upgrading their OS to Lion.  But I can't upgrade Safari anymore unless I upgrade the OS. I get messages constantly telling me I need to upgrade my web browser, and have increasing problems correctly viewing pages (like L.A. TImes, NY TImes) because Safari needs upgrading.
I can't really tell what the advantages are to upgrade to OS Mavericks or OS Yosemite because it seems most are intended for mobile apps, and I only use my desktop.
My last upgrade to SNow Leopard wiped out 2/3 of my iPhoto collection. No idea why and no fix. Macs used to be the epitome of compatibility for upgrades — not anymore.
What are my options? What issues would I encounter if I upgrade OS to Mavericks or to Yosemite? WHat are likely problems, advantages and disadvantages?
Thanks for any help sent my way.

If you do want to upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install Mavericks, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.

  • Any "STOCK" 24-inch iMac owners?

Has anyone bought a "STOCK" 24-inch iMac. I am planning on buying a Refurbished 24-incher, but I was wondering what are my chances of receiving one with a free unlisted upgrade. I was thinking... most people who can afford to buy this size iMac would most likely upgrade at least one thing (HD, Ram...). All refurbished Macs were bought (and hopefully upgraded) and returned to Apple for some reason right?

Refurb IMac can be "Stock" as most retailers only sell/stock "Stock" IMac including Apple own stores and many of them have a liberal return policy so they could have been returned to Apple simply because the person did not like the IMac or over 1-2 dead pixels.
I personally exchange my IMac 24" Stock 4X and on the fifth exchange I got a perfect screen. The first 4 IMac had between 1-3 dead pixels. I bought my IMac at Best Buy who has no quesiton asked return policy after reading many forums and people complaining about their 24" having between 1-3 dead pixels on them and Apple offical policy does not consider them defective unless they have 5 or more dead pixels. So if you buy from either Apple.com or offical Apple store and get less than 5 dead pixels they will not allow you exchange it without paying a restocking fee as according to them their is nothing wrong with your IMac and it working according to specs which allows upto 5 dead pixels.
I know my local Best Buy did not care about me returning and exchanging my IMac till i got a prefect one as their agreement with Apple is all returned Apple products get sent back to Apple for credit. Fry's J&R Music and Circuit City also have the same agreement with Apple which is why you never see open box Apple computers at any of the above retailers. So the chances of getting dead pixels on a refurb in my option is much higher than a new computer because all the above retailers will allow their customers to exchange their IMac if they have any dead pixels at all on the screen or just simply return them for any other reason what so ever. If you dont mind a couple of a dead pixels then I guess a refurb is for you.

  • I have an iMac 20 inch early 2009 software osx 10.8.1(12b19)...i am not able to use my internet, outlook, or any messenger. tried troubleshooting, reseting safari, disabling firewall, deleted intego...still no internet

I have an iMac 20 inch early 2009 software osx 10.8.1(12b19)...i am not able to use my internet, outlook, or any messenger. tried troubleshooting, reseting safari, disabling norton firewall, deleted intego...still no internet. i did delete intego without uninstalling so im wondering if that caused the problem. everytime i try to open safari it displays this: Safari can't open the page: "http://www.yahoo.com/". the error is: "the operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted" (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1)

Like nearly all antivirus utilities for OS X, Norton a/k/a Symantec and Intego are worthless junk that will cripple your Mac. Remants of one or both are most likely preventing Safari from communicating.
Search the forums for techniques to eradicate them - simply disabling them or dragging their apps to the Trash is not likely to be sufficient. Start by reading this procedure from Symantec:
    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH103489
    For Intego: http://support2.intego.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=214
... i did delete intego without uninstalling so im wondering if that caused the problem.
I believe you are correct. Download and run its uninstaller.

I am running a trial version of Elements 13 on the latest IMac 27 inch.  Any move of the mouse and it is time out.  Doesn't matter if the mouse is trying to do an edit or just moving across the window.  The program does not respond very well at all.  I am wondering now if I should bother purchasing the program.

How much ram do you have? Did you recently import a bunch of photos into the organizer? PSE will be slow till it's through cataloguing them, which can take some time for large number of images.

Return policy may be different from Apple's vs Best Buy. Regardless of crowds, only buy from Apple. Dealing with Best Buy in the future, if there's a problem it may not be worth what you believe to be a $40 savings.

Reboot and try again. If that fails, back up all data, then boot from your recovery partition (command-R at startup), launch Disk Utility, select your startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.

any way to increase font size on nnew iMac 27 inch?

    Hi,
In the Finder > View Menu > View Option > change the Text size.
This changes the size of text under the icons on the Desktop.
If you open any Finder window after this you can create a Default size for all windows from the same panel.

How to wall mount imac 20 inch intel? Any body has tried

The iMac 20" doesn't have a VESA-type mounting bracket on the back (the 24" one does). If you're brave and have the white plastic model, you can try [adapting an old iMac G5 mount kit|http://www.wikiela.com/wiki/Howto_wall_mount_a_Core_2_Duo_Intel_iMac_20_or17].
For other models, you can use the VESA adapter from [www.imacmount.com]. These are adapters that clamp a VESA-style mount bracket to the aluminum pedestal stand for the iMac. You can then attach the iMac (pedestal and all) to any VESA-compatible mount. Here's a picture of an 20" white iMac fastened to a wall using this method (same works for newer aluminum iMacs and the white 17" ones too):

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
