Any teachers in the U.K using ichat?

I am a teacher in kent, and have spent over a YEAR in wranggles and discussions with EIS who provide access to the internet for all schools in kent about being aloud to use ichat where i work. after all my efforts it just seems that the 23 ports that ichat uses will remain closed forever and i will never be able to video conference with teachers in U.S and elsewhere in a way that is free and easy.
my last hope is to show illustrations of other teachers in the u.k using it and hope that will act as leverage with them. give us a hand....anyone?

I read your post with interest. I'm not a teacher but I have a number of teacher friends who are, frankly, really put off technology in the class room principally due to the PC orientated 'clunk and click....clunk, clunk clunk.......' approach to working in the classroom. They tell me that they hate using computers in the class because it's not intuitive and doesn't provide a lively nor informative moment.
In contrast, when they've seen DVDs I've done and the links I've given them on the Apple Teacher Learning web network they do feel inspired - but frustration sets in again when they realise that it's the MacOSX/Software integration that provides the richness within the educational forum.
I like your ideas behind using iChatAV as a communication tool and linking up to do projects with other schools/countries. I do hope your enthusiasm and passion is resilient to persuade your IT provider.
Keep us posted on your successes.......

  • Is it possible to use iChat for non network video conferanci

    Hi all,
I am looking for a little help please. This may be a fruitless question, but here it goes. I have a deaf 5th grader. TTY relay is essentially a thing of the past, and all of her friends are using 'video phone' to keep in touch. Anyway, today we got a Sorenson VRS router and video phone camera from her school, and it uses our existing cable internet connection. It is a BUNCH of stuff to hook up to an already crowded system. Does anyone have any ideas about the possibility of using iChat for my daughter to connect to her friends that will be using a different system?
Sorry if this is the question of a Neophyte. I am learning this deaf world as i go.
    Thanks,
    Chad

    HI Randell,
Welcome to the Apple Discussion Pages.
I can tell you what iChat will do and maybe that will help.
iChat is an Instant Messaging service that uses the AIM servers. Therefore it is an AIM client.
AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger.
You can join this service in several ways.
    1) By having the AOL Package where AOL is your Internet provider (ISP)
    2) By having the stand alone Application referred on these Discussions as the AIM application (comes in several version for PC, Macs, Linux and phones although each version varies as to what it can do - see side bar at link page).
    3) Or by another application that is also an AIM client.
On a Mac that can be Proteus or AdiumX, there are PC AIM clients like Trillian.
Some AIM clients only do some of the features.
FOr instance iChat to PC AIM can Video (Moving Pics and Sound) but not Audio only.
iChat to Trillian on a PC can do both Video and Audio only if the PC end has the Pro version of Trillian ($25)
All clients can at least Text chat.
Many can send files and pics as well as Text chatting.
iChat can support Text chatting, Audio Chats and Video chats. Any USB Mic will work for Audio chats. Many Firewire DV Camcorders also work, many Firewire Webcams also work and some USB cams can be made to work with iChat.
To do this iChat needs a fast enough Mac (Procesor speed) and a fast enough interent Connection Speed.
In iChat 2 there is felt to be a better chance of success with connections to PC machines running either AIM (or the AOL package) or Trillian Pro for Video chats.
Text chats and Video chats can be done to the same Buddy (contact) at the same time. I would have thought this would be ideal as it provides a chance to practice lip reading skills and not missing any of the info.
What iChat 2 can not do.
    1) Chat to other services like MSN or Yahoo!
    2) Chat or link to Video phones.
    3) Video to Mobile (cell) phones.
    4) Connect to other Video conferencing services.
    For more info start here
Faq on how to start in iChat
This tells you more about connecting to PCs.
More info than you might need at this stage http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/
    What iChat 3 adds.
    1) Upto 4 people in a Video chat
    2) Access to the Jabber service (Another Instant Messaging service). This also can use Jabber servers that provide things called Tranports Gateways to other IM services which allows Text chatting to Buddiies on these services.

  • Any issues connecting the new MacBook to LCD projector with VGA adapter?

I do presentations on the road using my old MacBook with whatever LCD I find when I get there. I run Keynote with lots of video clips in my presentations. I carry a Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. Most often it works fine.
I was hoping to update to the new MacBook, but I'm concerned about the display issues on the discussion board.
Has anyone had any experience connecting the new MacBook using Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter?

I received my MB (aluminium) 2.0 in early November, but only this week (2nd week December) have had a need to use it for a presentation via the Mini DisplayPort --> VGA adapter.
I thought I could use it just as I did my previous (white 1.83 MacBook) laptop, but this one is a bit quirkier. Plugging in the adapter cable results in a system freeze. Unplugging the cable will restore mouse control (unfreezing the computer) in most instances, but not all.
Turns out that in order to use an external VGA connection, I need to have the adapter plugged in and restart the machine. If the external display is not present from boot, then it freezes.
This is unlike my previous MacBook, in which I could plug-unplug willy-nilly. The screen would flash blue a couple of times and all would be fine, with the external extended display detected and functioning. This was one of those nice "Mac" things that my Windows-using colleagues were somewhat jealous of, as they constantly have trouble getting their laptops to recognize the LCD projector.
Sadly, it looks like I'm now living in their world...

  • How to migrate the discoverer reports using the PPM tool

    Hi,
Did Any One Migrate the Discoverer Reports Using The PPM (Kintana Tool) From One Oracle Instance To The Other?
Please Help Me If Any One Knows?
    Thanks,
    Ankit

    Hi User,
    Create a new shared folder.
Provide access to all the users.
Now, ask the user who created the report in 'My Folders' to save the report in this new shared folder.
And, Delete those reports in 'My Folders'.
Now, as the report is saved in New shared folder you can access - this one.
Else--- Ask the user who created the report in my folder to make sure that it is available to all users. (Permissions - Permission should need to be provided for Administrator group)
    Thank you.

  • Problem with changing the Standard Price using MR21

I'm upgrading the system from 4.6C to ECC6.
Upgrading the Standard Price works normally in 4.6C. However, in ECC6, I notice that the data saved to CDPOS table is wrongly formatted. Therefore the other programs fail to read from this table.
Standard price is supposed to be right-justified. But it not like that in ECC6.
Can anyone tell me we should I look into to control the process of saving the data to CDPOS?
    Thanks.
    Han

    Thanks Amuktha.
The link doesn't seem to help resolving my problem.
The changes is saved into CDPOS in the field Value_New (CHARACTER 254) in the way that the actual data can be retrieved by:
    value_new+238
But any update to the standard price using MR21 now result in the value of Value_New that require:
    value_new+7
    to get the actual data.
Further more, in the old system, the standard price value in the decimal form like: "55.66" will be save to VALUE_NEW as "5566". So to get the real value, the system need to devide the value by 100 to get the actual new price.
In the ECC6 system, it is exactly the same as what we input: "55.66".
My question is: Is there an user exit, BADI or any way that can interfere the process of saving the data to CDPOS so that I can ensure the new Price will be save as "5566" and can be extracted using VALUE_NEW+238?
    Thanks.

  • Global Template Button without any code on the page, only in the template

    I have a template with 2 facets
         Main
         SubMenu
I would like to have some global Button on my template like Insert, save, delete, next and prev. And only have the code in the template.
So others just can use the template without thinking on added code to the page, to make the template work.
I have found some tutorials but there you have to create a managed bean on the page that uses the template.
What i would like it to make a piece of Java code in the bean on the template that do
    something like this:
Look in Facet("Main) for form, find the last focus table
then do the action "Insert, save, delete, next and prev" on table
I guess i need to run thru all the children of the Facet and look for a specific type
and somehow run the action for this child.
I don't wanna have to do any coding on the page, that uses the template only the template.

    Hi,

  • How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat.

I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Can i use ichat between two separate macs on the same mobile me account?

Can i use ichat over two separate macs on the same mobile me account?
I have an imac at home and may be getting a macbook for work. Can i use my mobile me account to chat between the two macs or would i need a mobile me account per mac??

    Hi,
    No.
You need two names that can login into AIM.
In iChat you can use the Get an iChat Account which shows after you use the Plus Button in Accounts.
This will give you a free @mac.com Name
    AIM Names are also free.

    Hi,
There is no iChat on the iOS 5 devices
However iChat on a Mac can send SMS messages to a Phone - Providing the computer  thinks it is in the United States and the Phone is serviced by a USA Carrier that takes part in the AIM Forwarding service.

  • IChat not working the way it used to...

Ok so I've been experiencing some stuff in iChat that I've never had happen before. Not even on my old (but lovely) PowerBook G4.
I have a MacBook Pro 15.4" screen, 2.4 GHz, upgraded 4GB PC-5300 DDR2 RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, with a built in Wireless N Card. I've used iChat before on my PowerBook G4 when talking to my boyfriend, and it was GREAT. We had PERFECT video feeds as well as audio. The only time it would be shaky is when someone at his house would make or recieve a phonecall (they have Vonage).
However, since getting my new MBP, the video and audio feeds have severely decreased in quality. I mean he is always pixelated, and it's really bad if he moves quickly, the audio on his end constantly skips so instead of talking sometimes he has to type what he's saying so I can understand him and vice versa. It's also slightly delayed, more than normal anyway. It's very frustrating for both of us. We are both are running Leopard (sidenote: with my old PB I was running Panther and he had a MB that was running Tiger).
I have Comcast internet and I own my modem. It is a Motorola SURFboard model: SB5101 and a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54G2 (I actually downgraded from an the Linksys WRT160N {MISTAKE booo!}, and I'll explain why later...)
I had the bandwidth set to unlimited and tried limiting it to 500 after reading a few forum posts, with no change in quality. I thought it might have been my router so I exchanged that. No improvement. Tried using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, no improvement. Took my Apple back to the Best Buy where I bought it from (and coincidentally, work), no one had any suggestions. I figured then that it might be my ISP (even though I never had a problem with Comcast before using my PB), and they swear it is my computer...they also had no tech support for MAC so I didn't really take them seriously.
Now here is where the weird part comes in. When I'm at my parents' house and I'm on iChat with my b/f we are both perfectly clear (except one time he told me that I was pixelated to him), and they have Comcast internet with (I think) a NetGear wireless router. When I'm at my friend's house and chatting with him we are, again, perfectly clear, she has Verizon internet and no idea what kind of wireless router.
This is why I'm so puzzled as to what could be causing my iChat to act like this. It has been this way since Day 1 when I got it back in March of this year.
The other odd thing that just recently started happening was that when him and I are connected Safari runs at SLUGGISHLY slow speeds. Never had this problem before. Any files or program updates I'm trying to download go from a few minutes to days and hours, webpages won't load due to timing out, and the second we get disconnected the files download in minutes and seconds. This only started happening about a month ago, so I don't know what could have changed to affect that.
The only two things I haven't swapped out are my actual modem and my MBP itself. I honestly doubt it is my MBP because anywhere else I connect everything is perfect, it's only when I am home that I experience problems. So I get that something is probably either setup incorrectly or defective with my equiptment. Has anyone else been having similar problems, or at least does anyone have any suggestions? (Ralph! **hint hint** :-D) Anything from anyone would be great and extremely appreciated. I fell in love with MAC a long time ago, and iChat was one of the great perks that it gave me, and I'd love to be able to use it at it's full potential again. Thanks again! Happy MAC-ing!

You will see a drop if the computer is doing something on line at the time you test.
However, normally you would see a drop in both figures.
Did you try Defcom's suggestion of setting the iChat Bandwidth Limit to 200kbps ?
IS this device set up to only allow the computer you want to access it ?
Do the lights flash to indicate it is Busy even when you are apparently doing nothing ?
I am wondering if someone else is logged on to your Wireless Network ?

  • After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I see my buddy, but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies.

After years of owning all things Mac, I am finally trying to use iChat, and can't get it to work. I am using gmail, and I see my buddy (no camera icon next to her name), but all I can do is send a message--the video and audio chat icons are gray, as is inviting to a video chat under Buddies. My buddy has the same problem as I.  We are able to do video chat through gmail, but I had hoped to use iChat.  I am using OS 10.6.8, iChat v. 5.0.3.  What am I missing?

    HI,
iChat will Video chat to another iChat in a Jabber Buddy List (Google run a Jabber server for GoogleTalk)
However it will not Video to the Web Page login to iGoogle or the Web Mail Page login.  (where people can Google Chat as it were in a  Web Browser).
Nor does it video to the Google Talk Stand alone app for PCs or any other Jabber apps on any platform.
iChat uses a connection Process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) which is also used by other VoIP devices.
Jabber/XMPP invited the Jingle Protocol for Jabber Applications.
Google have included this in their Standalone app and the Plug-in for Web Browsers on both PCs and Mac (you can get this as a Standalone Plug-in or as part of Chrome)
More on this here  This article has been changed several time in the recent months.  It now claims a greater involvement by Google in writing the Jingle Library (Although now Google's version does not work with the others)
This tends to mean that using the web Login to Google to Chat also cannot video chat to other Jabber apps that are using Jingle.
If your Buddy is using iChat then check the Video Menu has two items to Enable Camera/Video chat and Microphone/Audio chats are ticked.
In the View Menu the Show Status Items should be ticked (Selecting them toggles the tick and the function On or Off)
It could be Internet speed but at this stage I would doubt this at this stage.

  • How to use iChat on the same home network?

If two people have iChat on their laptops and happen to be in the same house on the same router, do you need to set up some sort of account to use iChat to see and talk to each other or can they do it with whatever is already on their macs?
If they do need some sort of third party account, what's the easiest method to use?

    Hi,
You do not "Need" any other Screen Name or other utility or app.
The Start Up Screens if you have not done that bit yet will prompt you for an AIM or Apple ID (Screen Name) in the Second Screen. It will also prefill your Name from the Address Book Info held at the My Card.
You can click through this Screen. The Next will ask you about setting up Jabber/Googletalk but you can click through that as well.
There is a Screen that allows you to Enable Bonjour as well. Tick the Box as this is what you will be using.
There follows a Video preview and the option to take a Pic as your Buddy pic.
Then a Screen with the Done Button.
This should then open iChat proper with just one Buddy List titled Bonjour.
It will use your name as in the Address Book as your Buddy name (this is what the other computers will see.
Alternatively you can click through all the start Up Screens then go the the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and Enable the Bonjour listing in the Account Info tab > "Enable Bonjour" tick box
Double Clicking a Buddy's Line in the Buddy list will start a Text Chat
If they are showing a Camera icon, double clicking the icon will start a Video chat.
There are variations using the icons at the bottom of the Buddy List or the Buddies menu (even Right Clicking on a Buddy)

Hi all. I want to make audio chat with my brother. I use iChat on my MBP. He uses Gtalk on his windows PC. The problem is that the audio icon is gray so I cannot start audio chat. Is there anyway? Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows or not? I am confused.

    HI,
You need to satisfy several things along the way
    Account type
You need to have a Jabber or Google mail Account your self.
If you have a Google Mail Account then it needs the "Talk" option Enabled in your Google account Settings ( A Facebook with "Chat" enabled is also a  valid Jabber ID to use in iChat).
    Connection Method
This is about which apps can connect to which apps for Video ro Audio to work.
iChat Video when using a Jabber account is iChat to iChat Only.
iChat connects using a process called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
Jabber based Apps if they have  an A/V module connect using protocol called Jingle.
Needless to say Google do their own version of this that is written in to the web Browser Plugin that allows Video Chats (there are PC and Mac versions), and in the PC app called GoogleTalk.
However it is also not that compatible with other Jabber apps.
    See Jingle here
This claims, now, that Google had a hand in writing the Protocol.
Also in the "Clients Supporting Jingle" list many more version of Google products are mentioned with extended info. (it suggests that someone at Google has been editing the page).
Can iChat make voice chat with Gtalk on windows or not?
The specific answer to this to be clear is NO.
We are talking about different Apps (or web Browser Plugins) using different Internet Protocols that are not compatible.
The simplest thing is to get the Web Browser Plugin (However there can be issues with the  Flash Plugin)
At one time Google used Flash to do Video Chats and it would seem their Plugin is very close to this part of Flash.
See the Known Issues and the "Google Talk Plugin Disables iSight On Mac" item.
    Options
Use a Web Browser yourself with the Plugin.
Use a Flash Base Site such as MeBeam  (Flash has to be enabled in your Browser and the instructions are simple on the page)
Try to find a Jingle capable Mac Jabber Client (app) ( I have not found one).
