Any way around this?

Hi
I have a 1.25Ghz Rev A Powerbook G4 with 512MB Ram (standard factory spec i.e. standard superdrive which only burns –R and -RW). I have a couple of questions regarding Leopard.
First, I note from Apple that 512MB is the minimum for running 10.5. Will my machine be able to cope as it is or will I see a slow down from 10.4.11?
Second, the company who I work for has a license that has been negotiated with Apple for 10.5. The upshot of this is that we can download it from our internal network to use on machines that we use for work. That said, IT support is non-existent so I’m hoping that someone can help me with the problem detailed below.
You download the various parts, stick them in a folder, run a terminal command and it merges the files into an image which you can burn to a DVD (so you have a bootable disk). This all seems pretty simple. However the instructions say that you need an 8.5GB dual layer DVD. Am I correct in thinking that my machine doesn’t have a drive capable of burning to such a DVD (nothing in system prefs)? If I am correct, is there any way to work around this i.e. use two single layers DVDs or am I going to have to get someone to burn the image for me (I don’t have any firewire drives)?
Thanks

The upshot: You absolutely need more RAM. 10.5 is going to be a dog on any machine with only 512Mb. You can install and run it but....well just get some more RAM. And don't cheap out. The 10.5 installer will give you no end of trouble if it does not "like" the RAM.
Since you are obviously in an environment in which there are other Macs available, I would suggest you consider installing 10.5 on your machine from another Mac using FW Target Disk mode. That way you need not worry about upgrading your optical drive. But be smart about this. You simply MUST make a bootable, verified backup (clone) of your current stable system first. How or where (since you don't have any external drives) you do this is something you will have to work out but if you don't do this, you might easily end up back here with bigger problems. Perhaps it's time for you to invest is an external FW drive?
