Any way to free up HD space ahead of Archive and Install?

My macbook pro recently stalled login at the blue screen. i tried the usual tricks including safe boot and repairing permissions and disk. when i try to login with safeboot it thinks for a minute and returns me back to the login screen. multiple repairs of permissions and disk yield no errors. i went to my local apple store and they suggested doing an archive and install. unfortunately when i tried to do it, i was 200mb short of the 2.4gb of HD space needed to do the most bare bones install that included no software, fonts, or drivers. is there any way to access any of my HD files and delete something? it would break my heart to have to do a full erase and reinstall because of just 200mb of space. please recall that there is no way for me to enter the computer through either normal boot or safeboot. thanks in advance for your help.

Good catch, I didn't notice that.
You can use a pre-Intel Mac, though. It just needs to be running Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. I've booted my MBP from a PB G4 running Tiger with no trouble.
Thanks for the star, and good luck!
Ps. This highlights the need to have a +frequently updated+ bootable backup for your computer. Personally, I use SuperDuper to keep an up-to-date bootable clone on an external firewire drive. If I ever need to, I can boot my MBP from that.

Why is that ?? how can i get my space back and the previous system folder its only taking up like 6 gigs stiil where is ther 15 gigs? its like if installed leopard over leopard again please help! i Want to get my space backk

    Hi JM111;
When you do an Archive & Install the procedure saves the old system for you in a folder called Previous System. It does this just in case something is missing so that you can recover it from the Previous System folder. Once you have tested the system and applications and are satisfied with it, you can delete the Previous System folder which will return some disk back.

  • Is there any way to have a COMPLETE list of all samples and loops ( Logic 8

I'm sure it's been posted previously, but anyway, I'm looking to buy new Apple Loops libraries and I have faced the fact , that many of the sounds and loops produced by third parties manufacturers have been already included in Logic installation discs.
I have a list of Apple Loops DVD's that have been included with Logic somewhere, the problem is, Apple didn't post ( I believe) the credits of all 3rd party manufacturers that have produced these libraries that are included with Logic or Garage band. Is there any way to have a COMPLETE list of all samples and loops that are included with Apple DAW's so I wouldn't duplicate anything ? I'm pretty much positive that Apple had other companies to sound design and sample all libraries for them, so is there also a way to have a list of those manufacturers? Again, the objection is to start upgrading the sound library without any possible duplication?
    Thanks in advance!

Chris, I certainly don't mind additional questions and postings.
I believe there are many issues with Apple Loops and Logic that need to be resolved and people need to be aware of that. Unfortunately, in opposite to the old "german" version of Logic , there's no lifetime tech support, you can't even call and ask the question after 60 days , which isn't right for a professional software of this level, especially considering the fact that many things still remain vague in Logic even for developers and tech support people!( believe me, I've called and asked!)
Issues like that need to be resolved over the phone with the company, period!
One thing I also learned over the years as a Mac OSX user, if something doesn't work, don't mess with it. Delete your drive and re-install everything. This is very frustrating , I know, but unfortunately this is the only way to deal with OSX issues, if you got a problem with your system, don't try to fix it. It's never gonna be the same again. I know , it's off the topic a little bit, but if your content is missing from the system files, before installing your new Logic, back up your important files, wipe up your drive and clean install Mac OSX , run updates and then install the Logic. Most likely , everything will be in it's place, at least 90% or more. I gave up trying to make two system in my house to be compatible 100% , but it's OK if they're 90% or more identical. I spent enormous amount of time trying to find out what's missing and where, I visited most of the forums and there's no clean answer.

I assume that you don't have the installation discs, so:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold command + s key down after you hear the chime.
    3. When you get a text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. You will go through the setup process again, create a new admin account, login to it and then change your existing account password or whatever else you need to do. You can delete the account you made in this process, or not.

Have you not got a backup of your content on, for example, external drives ? If not then you could have a look to see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work : https://discussions.apple.com/message/11014893?messageID=11014893#11014893

Copy everything from your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.
    Then sync.

  • Is there any way to spy the data communicating between the GPIB and the PC.

    HI
I have a device communicating with my PC using IEEE 488 GPIB card. Do we have any way to spy the data exchanged by the device and the PC running a different application.
I am trying to program an application that needs to gather data from a HP 54602A - 150 MHz - 4 Channel oscilloscope using a IEEE 488 add-on card. I am able to talk to the device and request the device number through MAX. I need to know the other commands to the oscilloscope. Can any one help me in this regard.
    With Regards

Launch NI Spy (Start >> Programs >> National Instruments >> NI Spy). You may want to configure it to capture 64k of data instead of 64 bytes since the strings sent to the device may be larger than 64 bytes.
Start capturing with NI Spy and then run the application. All of the calls made to the device will be captured in NI Spy. You can then look at the data buffers to determine what strings are being sent to your device.

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a G4, buy a retail Mac OS X 10.5 DVD from a source such as Amazon or eBay; Apple still might have copies in stock if you phone them.
If it's an Intel Mac, buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store.

  • Is there any way to sync 20 iPads to the same account and keep their folders?

Is there any way to sync 20 iPads to the same account and keep their folders?

We have 2200 student iPads on our school campus. When starting from scratch they all receive one identical image and then are renamed according to their property tag (manually ). Students are then checked out their device for the school year and often move their apps around into folders. I often have some come back in to be synced, updated, etc. and I do mid-year updates to apps. As long as their names are unique I have no issues with them retaining folders when they are resented late. So basically as long as you don't mind doing the set up to each one of the 20 the first time you sync them, you can update them whenever you'd like, adding and updating apps, and you can retain folders.
And of course there are all sorts of other options with Configurator and other MDMs.

  • Want to run an archive and install, but can't empty trash to free space

I don't know where to begin... at some point recently something caused problems with several applications, so after trying to repair permissions and repair disk with no luck, I decided to archive & install. Now I want the old problems back: Word/Excel/Photoshop will not open because of some library error (Carbonlib?), and my network settings keep going screwy such that if my computer goes to sleep, I couldn't pick up my wireless signal anymore without restarting (and then ta-da, there it was like there was never any problem).
So in trying to archive and install I keep stalling at the very beginning... I'll leave it for hours hoping it would proceed but it wouldn't. I've repaired disk several times, with the same errors ultimately coming up. So without being able to archive and install I figured I'd better back everything up and do an erase & install. Started backing things up in prep for moving them onto a server, but when I plugged the server in, my computer said it couldn't get on. Same exact server wire had just come out of my work computer which connects just fine. So now I've got duplicates of all my files on the desktop, so I try to trash them and when I select 'empty trash' or 'secure empty trash', I get the box that says "preparing to empty trash" and then everything except my wallpaper goes away, and eventually comes back as if I've restarted. Now I definitely can't archive and install because with duplicate copies of all my files I have only 1.7gb available and need 1.9 to install just the required files.
I'm at a total loss! Incidentally, my ipod won't mount if I try to plug it in.
Are there other options in disk utility that I can try? I don't know enough to feel comfortable just trying something, and I don't know what the "Restore" option does.
Oh goodness, I hope somebody knows something that can help me out of this.

  • Archive And Install: any way to preserve settings??

Hey there, so as I've been posting on these forums, been having some problems with my computer freezing after I upgraded it to Tiger. Although it certainly wasn't crash-proof beforehand--although I used the program Rember and that suggested that the RAM was okay, that wouldn't necessarily tell me if the RAM was compatible--and I Verified and Repaired permissions for everything beforehand, the incidences have been increasing. It even froze when Software Upgrade was installing the 10.4.11 package! So, someone here suggested that I try again, using Archive And Install.
If you have any suggestions on whether this is a good plan, let me know. I'm certainly ready to try it, but one of the things I liked about the basic upgrade is that it kept all my user settings from the previous OS--my other 3rd party applications, my personal files, my bookmarks, etc. Although I DID clone the previous boot partition to my external drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner), I haven't necessarily even looked at the clone since I reinstalled.
Granted, if I can simply copy and paste all of those files, applications, and import those bookmarks from the old drive, then I'm not as worried. It's not like I upgrade my OS system very often, and just don't know that much about how Archive and Install differs.
So, I want to know EXACTLY what's at risk, what I'd need to back up & reinstall (and if doing so could potentially eliminate any problems that could've incurred from the computer freezing during that Tiger Package upgrade).
    Thank you!

How to Perform an Archive and Install
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
The option to preserve users and network preferences will move your user folder from the previous system to the newly installed system. It will move your network preferences only from the /Library/SystemConfiguration/ folder. It will move your third-party applications. It will NOT move any application support folders located in /Library/Applications Support/ nor any third-party preferences located in the /Library/Preferences/ folder nor any third-party software folders installed in the /Library/ folder.
I would clone your existing system before doing the Archive and Install as a precaution. Repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand and test the clone afterwards to be sure it boots the computer.
