Any way to sync two macs... without putting all of your data online?

I'm thinking about getting a macbook air to supplement the iMac I have at home. I'd envision using it the following way:
- Select a few folders, iTunes playlists, calendars, and iPhoto albums
- Copy these from the iMac to the Air
- Edit files, play music, edit calendars, edit and add photos on the Air
- Press "sync" and have all of the edits/playcounts/calendars/photos propagate back to the iMac -- just like an iPhone syncing
Is there any way to do this fairly simple task? (The one caveat is that I don't want to upload all of the above-mentioned files/music/calendars/photos to a server (e.g. dot mac or google). That just seems like a bad idea.)
If there's no way to do this using iSync, has anyone found a decent 3rd party application that works well?
Thanks!

There's certainly no way of doing this with iSync as iSync is only for syncing Contacts and Calendars to non-Apple mobile phones.
Google for ChronoSync as that may do what you want.

  • Sync two Macs without .mac??

    Hello there...
Is there any way to sync two macs without using .mac? I have a G4 iBook and a G5 iMac and I would like to sync their iCal so both calendars look the same on each computer.
    Thank you for your help.
    Hagen

Free eh? (Why does everybody want something for nothing these days?)
Well, there is notMac, but you need your own server, and alot of time and technical know-how to set it up.
Otherwise nothing free... developers (like regular people) generally like to be paid for their work and long hours.
For $25 you can get iSynCal
For $20 you can get BusySync

You do regularly sync your photos to your computer and delete them from the Camera Roll on the iPhone, correct?
Have you tried to download them using Photo Stream?

  • TS3999 Using OS Mavericks. Any way to sync Contacts & Calendars without using iCloud? Don't always have internet!

Any way to sync ical and contacts without internet?!!

Not unless you want to install OS X server and set up your own CardDAV and CalDAV server as explained here: http://www.macworld.com/article/2061183/itunes-ios-syncing-gone-solve-it-with-se rver-.html.  That would allow you to sync contacts and calendars locally with your Mac as you could before Mavericks.

  • Best way to sync two Macs?

I recently got a new iMac, which means I now run Mac OS X Lion on an iMac as well as on a MacBook Pro. This means I now need to keep the two machines in sync. I am finding that although iCloud takes care of my calendar, photos, and contacts, it is not useful when it comes to documents and other data. Could someone please suggest the best way of keeping the two Macs in sync?

    Sorry No.
I don't have a need for such syncing.
But the app is around for quite some time and they have a time-limited Trial version.

  • Using 10.4.11 is there a way to sync two macs??

    Hello,
I have a g4 1.5 gig 5,5 laptop and a tower g4 agp sawtooth accelerated computer. We have att with its wireless modem/router. I got things messed up with adding, deleting, altering documents, bookmars, address books etc. I'm wonder IF there's ANY program out there that would allow to sync (not clone) these two computers? I just signed up with mobileme, so I can sync bookmarks (on safari only) and address book BUT NOT files and folders. Is there a way to sync using the wireless modem OR firewire connection and reboot? A tech person mentioned one possibility ----intech 303-554-5555 data backup. But they haven't returned phone calls. Any info would be appreciated.
PS I want to stick with Tiger because it apparently runs better on these older machines than does Leopard (thus timemachine is not available to me).
    Thanks
    Yaya

    Hi yaya,
There are many Folder Sync APPs, I use Tri-Backup...

And can synchronize folders across my Network, and it does way more than TM and all the others out together too!

  • How do you reinstall itunes without losing all of your data

I'm losing my mind.  My son accidentally disabled his ipad mini (thought it would be cool to put a passcode on it and now he's locked it up because he entered it wrong 6 times).  I've tried everything at the link for restoring, but it's not working.  It keeps saying my "disk is full" and can't proceed with the recovery/restore.  I've deleted as many files as I could from my hard drive on the PC but it still won't work.  Then, I tried to upgrade to the newest version of iTunes hoping that might help.....I got the same message halfway through the install that the disc is full.  I had to cancel out and now it's telling me iTunes is no longer installed on my PC I need to reinstall.....but I can't because there is no space   .  What can I do!

Backup your iTunes library - assuming you're using the default setup, this will be the C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes folder and all its subfolders - to an external hard drive.  You can use a regular Windows copy operation to do this, though the method described in turingtest2's user tip on Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy is preferable.  If all of your media (songs, movies, TV shows. ...) is contained within the C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media folder you've replicated your complete library; otherwise you'll separately need to take a copy of whatever other folders your media is in (and make a careful note of where it came from).  Once you're 100% certain that you've copied all of this to the external drive, you can take a deep breath and delete the C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes folder to create some more free space on your C: drive - hopefully enough to install iTunes.  Just to repeat and emphasize: check and double-check that you've copied your iTunes data to the external drive before you start deleting anything!
Another of tt2's useful documents - Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates - describes how to make sure that all the components of a previous installation are removed before you re-install.  Given that you're likely to  have pieces of iTunes on your C: drive as a result of the aborted re-install it would be appropriate to go through these steps before attempting to re-install the latest (12.1.1.4) version of iTunes.
Since your C: drive is obviously running low on available space it may be appropriate to switch over to having the iTunes software (plus all its configuration/preferences files, backups of iDevices, etc.) on the C: drive but keep your library on the external drive that you just copied it to.  The exact setup to achieve this will depend on how your library is currently organized - if, as described above, everything is contained within C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes, with a layout like this:
then this is very simple; if some or all of your media is currently in other locations a few extra steps may be required.

  • How to fix 3G/VVM/MMS problems in 4.0 WITHOUT losing all of your data

First off, I can't take credit for this. tekset21 on these forums mentioned trying a restore from DFU instead of straight up and that's when I started experimenting the last few hours.
I've tried this twice. It worked the same exact same way. I'm guessing it will work for you as well.
    1) Make sure you have a backup to restore to that will work. For me, this was the backup I made just before I upgraded to 4.0 yesterday.
    2) Put your phone into DFU mode. To do this, you basically connect to iTunes, Hold down both the top button and the home button for 10 seconds, then release the top button but keep holding the home button until a window pops up in iTunes saying it's discovered a phone in iTunes in restore mode. If you need more help google "DFU mode" - there are tons of videos.
    3) Restore using the regular restore button. Wait for the iPhone to finish reapplying the 4.0 software and reappear in iTunes
    4) Click set up as a new phone and then continue. I personally sent myself an MMS, verified the 3G data connection was working by using maps, and played around with my voice mail until it asked me for a password and eventually showed me my visual voice mail.
    5) Finally I restored to the backup I made yesterday. Everything was there like a normal restore (kinda).
NOTE: Whenever I did this the first time it came back from the restore with no SMS icon. I cannot explain this. I could receive a SMS, I could send one. The MMS worked fine too. The icon even showed up in the task drawer- just no icon on the home screen.
Tried the above 5 steps a second time and said "what the ****" and just rebooted my phone- the SMS icon appeared. Went through all the motions again (third time) and the icon appeared again.
    6) Reboot your phone (if you haven't already).
Doing all of the above got me my phone to exactly where it was before i updated yesterday. I wish I could test this and restore it with the backup I made right before I started doing this tonight (get my messages from today back) but iTunes does not give me the option of doing so. I don't know why- I can see both backups and their timestamps but iTunes just isn't giving me that option.
    Hope this helps.

THIS FIX ALSO WORKS FOR THE EXCHANGE SYNCING PROBLEM!!!
    THANKS!!

  • ICal sync between macs without mobileme?

    Hi
I wondered if there is any way to sync two iCal calenders via airport without using mobileme?
Both my macs run snow leopard.
    -Victor L

I assume people haven't responded because the answer to this question can be found in many places if you just take the time to search google.
    But here you go:
    1) You can use iSync to sync them both over bluetooth, i believe.
    2) You can use something like Spanning Sync or BusySync ($)
    3) You can use Fruux (free, BETA)
3.5) You could publish them to the free site icalexcahnge.com and subscribe to them on the other computer (but one mac can only view, not edit)
    4) You can use Plaxo or Google Calendar and CalDAV (not too pretty IMHO)
    5) You can buy Mac OS X Server and use the iCal Server ($$$)
    6) You can set up a Darwin Calendar Server (most complicated)

  • Is there any way to sync Outlook for Mac with iPhone? I have tried everything but not successful. Apple says it is not possible to sync contacts from Outlook for Mac to iPhone 5. Any help will be much appreciated.

Is there any way to Sync contacts from Outlook for Mac to iPhone 5? Apple support says that only iTune can only sync contacts from "Contact" which is the default contact of Mac. If one is running Outllok on a Mac machine then it is not possible to sync the contacts with iPhone. It is strange that Apple distributors are promoting and offering machines with promise that Windows users can now run MS Office on Mac machines without any problem. While this is true, it is so strange that one cannot sync the contacts from MacBook Pro to iPhone5. If someone has found a way to sync contacts from Outlook to iPhone 5 please help as it is very frustrating to not be able to sync the contacts. Thanks, Amit.

Yes, if you have access to another computer with an optical drive. You can connect the two computers via your home network and use File Sharing to transfer the installer to your HDD. You can also use:
DVD or CD sharing- Using Remote Disc
Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks

  • Is there any way of syncing mail on mac with mail on iphone so if you open an email on one it is marked as read on the other?

The title speaks for itself. It's very anoying opening a message on the iphone and when you get to the mac all the messages you read allready on the iphone are not opened yet. Is there any way of syncing them so if you open a mail in iphone its marked 'read' in mac?
    Thanks in advance

Such behavior requires an IMAP or Exchange account. Sounds like you have a POP account & that's the way that POP accounts work. POP was designed for an age when users had only one device...a computer, thus POP doesn't play well in the modern world where users have multiple devices.
