You have to buy the DVD for 10.6. It's not available for download like 10.7.or 10.8. The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard.
The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion.
The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.

Is there a way to update my itouch 4.2.1 on my iMac 10.7.2 so that I can use iCloud on the touch?  I want to sync my calendar.

It depends which generation of iPod Touch you have.
The 2nd generation Touch can only use iOS 4.2.1 as the latest version. You can identify the 2nd gen Touch from the model number etched into the back of the case, it's A1288.
The 3rd gen Touch (and above) can install iOS 5. The 3rd gen Touch has model number A1318 etched into the back of the case.
(The 4th gen has a camera, front and back.)

As Niel says, no way to go past 10.5.8 on your Mac, but there is a more upto date Browser...

I am operating a 2009 desktop Mac OsX 10.5.8. How do I upgrade to a current operating system? Do I need to purchase Snow Leopard? I have clicked update my software but see now changes.

You first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. In order to upgrade to Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks you first must upgrade to Snow Leopard. Your model should be able to run Mavericks which you can download for free.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Remember to do the following before starting the upgrade process:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Restart the computer from the Apple menu.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • I have an older mac, i purchased Snow Leopard so that i could upgrade to Yosemite but now it says Snow Leopard is too out of date to update to Yosemite!

So i have an older Macbook that ran Leopard and i was told via Apple that in order to upgrade fully to Yosemite i would first have to purchase Snow Leopard, then i'd be able to update to Yosemite for free. I got the Snow Leopard disc (it was scratched which REALLY ****** me off, since i paid $20, but it seemed to work installing the new OS so whatever), and it's now at version 10.6.3 - i tried to run software updates and it says it's successful, but that i need to restart my computer. Every time i try, the screen just freezes with the desktop image and never restarts. And now i can't update to Yosemite because i need to have 10.6.8! I am very frustrated and not sure where to go from here. Can anyone help?

Don't panic. You can download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. Then you can access the App Store in order to download Yosemite.
Meanwhile you need to reinstall Snow Leopard properly:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Re: Must install Snow Leopard 1st Before Installing Lion

I am about to purchase Snow Leopard in order to enable Lion download/installation. Before I do, is there any reason to believe this step will be unnecessary within a short period of time?

No. Having SL installed is necessary so you can access the Mac App Store in order to download Lion.
Apple - OS X Lion - Get Lion in July. Only from the Mac App Store.
Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM.

Unless there are drivers provided by Apple to work with the printer, you're out of luck. The latest drivers provided by Lexmark are for OS X 10.4 Intel. Unfortunately, this can happen when slightly older peripherals and newer software don't mesh.

  • Re: Password Assistant -- "The Missing Manual" references such a beast, but I cannot locate it. I have ver 10.6.8. Anyone out there who can help?

According to The Missing Manual, Version 10.6.8 of the Mac OSX Snow Leopard system should have a password generating utility, called the "Password Assistant," which actually generates passwords for you. I've been unable to find this miraculous utility on my Mac, and seek enlightenment from the learned readers of this community. Anyone out there have some light to shine on my dark corner?

I  think the "Password Assistant" they are specifically referring to comes up when creating or changing an Account's password.  For example, go into your System Preferences Accounts.  Select an Account.  Click the Change Password... The sheet that drops down has a little key in a box.  Click that.  And a window with the title "Password Assistant" is displayed.
    Example: Using Apple’s Password Assistant
Note, the Password Assistant can also be brought up from Keychain Access's New Password Item... menu.  It brings up a sheet with a little key too.
Lastly, a little google searching flushed out a little app which apparently directly uses the built in OS X Password Assistant used by Change Password and Keychain Access.  It's called, no surprise, Password Assistant and can be found here.

  • Hi there! yesterday I installed Mavericks on my Macbook. Since then, it doesn't mount my external hard disk drive anymore, which he did a week ago (without the update). Is there anyone out there who knows a solution?

Hi there! Yesterday, I installed Mavericks on my Macbook. Since then, it doesn't recognize my external hard disk drive anymore (at least not on the desktop. In Germany they call it "it doens't mount it". I don't know if it's the same expression in english?)
I just used it a week ago, before I did the update and it worked perfectly fine.
Is there anyone out there who knows a solution for this problem? I've been googleing for hours now and can't find any answer.
    Thank you!!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How do I upgrade my Mac OS X 10.4.11 to a newer version? I purchased Snow Leopard but it said I needed an Intel. Please help!

I have a eMac 10.4.11. How can I get it up to date and compatible? I purchased Snow Leopard but it would not load because I need Intel? I would appreciate any help with this. Thank you!

Check you processor speed before spending money on 10.5. The 10.5 installer required a minimum 867mHz processor; many eMacs have 700 or 800 mHz processors--not fast enough for 10.5.
Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu will show your processor's speed where I've indicated below with the lower of the two red arrows:

i have moved my sdcard over to my samsung brightside phone,. but the videos can not be read. Is there anyone out there whom may have experienced the same issue? I also tried transferring my files over to my pc first, then reformatted the sdcard, then transferred to the appropriate files back onto the sdcard and put back into samsung.

Thanks for the info SuzyQ. lorsa, the community is correct, pictures and videos can be saved differently on other phones. What phone did you remove the SIM card from? Where did you purchase your SIM card from? Your previous phones SD card and format may not be compatible with your Brightside device. I show you advise that you reformated your memory card but make sure the files are saved correctly. Listed below are the different type of files you can save, receive, and view for pics and videos with your device.
Files that are compatible with the Brightside device:
    JPEG (*.jpg, *.jpeg, *.jpe)
    BMP (*.bmp)
    PNG (*.png)
    GIF (*.gif)
    3G2 (*.3g2)
    3GP (*.3gp)
    MPEG4 (*.mpg)
Please let me know if the information above helped with your issue. Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. Make sure you always power cycle periodically. You may also need to peform a hard rest for your phone.

  • Anyone out there creating impulse responses?

Those of you that use sine sweeps to create your impulse responses, when you deconvolve them do they end up being the same length as your sweep file or does space designer create the proper length reverb tail?
When I attempt to create my impulse responses space designer does not create a reverb tail. It just seems to remove the sound of the sweep form the wet file.
Other convolution reverb programs that I have used create a reverb tail automatically and I believe sound designer should do this as well.
If anyone else is having this problem or has a fix for this issue please let me know. If not then if anyone out there is successfully capturing impulse responses using a sine sweep please post detailed step-by-step instructions on how you are able to do it.
At this point I am at wits end. I have contacted apple care only to find out that they don’t support space designer, so they were no help. You guys are my only hope…
    Please Help
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The process is simple, but has many steps and they must be takin in the proper order:
Play the sweep tone into the space or reverb device while recording the output of the space or reverb device. If you use a reverb device, be sure to set the mix to 100% effect.
Be certain that the space or device you are sampling has fully decayed before you stop the recording. If you were sampling a 4 second plate reverb, do not stop the recording for at least 8 to 12 seconds after the sweep tone feeding the plate has ended.
Edit the resulting recording to eliminate 'dead space' before the sweep begins, and remove any excess space at the end of the file. Be careful not to truncate the decay portion after the end of the sweep.
Place the original sweep file and your edited recording of the effected sweep somewhere easy to find, I use a new folder and save them there.
In "Space Designer" press the "Deconvolution" button in the upper right corner. Load the effected sweep recording, then the original sweep signal and then save the resulting IR in a new folder.
Load the resulting IR file using the "IR Sample" menu and save the preset.
I've created hundreds of impulse files using sweep tones and it has always yielded proper reverb tail lengths for the space or reverb I was sweeping. In other words, if the sweep was 12 seconds long and the space I was sweeping has a 3 second RT60, the resulting impulse would be 3 seconds. On some files Space designer will create an impulse file which is much much too long. In these cases I remove the unnecessary minute or so at the end of the file and resave it.

No purchase is required to install Flash Player.  The offer you're seeing is optional.  There should be a yellow 'Install Now' button on the bottom right of the page. Is the button not displaying?  Please post a screenshot of the page (How to post a screenshot in the forum).
