Anyway to lock a file-folder???

Hi, I would like to lock a folder, that is put a password or something on it so only I can access it. Anyway to do this for only one file? One file at a time? I seem to remember this on a podcast somewhere.

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create an encrypted disk image and use that to store sensitive data. There are other ways of hiding or password protecting folders, but if encryption isn't used, the mechanism can be easily bypassed by someone who has an administrator account on the computer or physical access to the drive.

Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
It will not delete.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

You can try putting it into Disk Mode

If that works, you can see if the computer will recognize it when connected, either in iTunes or by the system.
NOTE: You can also try putting it into Disk Mode WHILE it is already connected to the computer.
If the iPod is recognized, you may be able to use one of the third-party methods or utilities to transfer song files from iPod to computer. You can do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer" to get some links (add "mac" to the search if your computer is a Mac).
Once the song files are on your computer, add them to that computer's iTunes library, then sync it to the new iPod.

Identifying the process or user that has a lock on a folder or file

In Windows Server 2008, it was easy to identify the user that had a lock on a folder or file. As a last resort, you could always log off that user to release a lock.
In Windows Server 2012 R2, as far as my limited understanding, it is more difficult to identify which user or process has a lock on a folder or file. Is there a MS or third party technique or tool to achieve this?
I looked at the third party tool called Unlocker, but I think that that does not work on network drives.

Use below to get all the open files:

Identify the interested path and note the 'FileId', ClientComputerName (Is the user Workstation IP)
Use below cmdlet to identify if Locks(1) is Enabled on that path not.
Get-SmbOpenFile -FileId 4415226383569 | Select-Object -Property *ClientComputerName    : 192.168.102.14
ClientUserName        : Contoso\Contoso-HV2$
ClusterNodeName       : Contoso-FS2
ContinuouslyAvailable : True
Encrypted             : False

Locks                 : 1
Path                  : C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\VMS\VM4.VHDX
Once you find the correct FileId, use below command to ping and find the workstation name having the Lock,
ping -a <IP address>

Finder software is locked unable to open all files folder

I am able to open finder and view every file except the all files folder. Also when I open the mail program or safari the menu is not listed at the top of the screen so that I can access it. I had to force shut down the finder program and then the other programs would open and work normally. The finder program does give one error message saying that it can't find that file. but all the files are there I just can't open that one window. Thanks, Sheila

Have you tried Safari or Chrome or Opera, just to see if you have the same PDF issue?

At startup I get a file folder with a ?

I Have a 2007 iMac, I had to force shut off when iTunes froze. When I rebooted the screen had a file folder with a ? On it. I am running 10.6.8 and I have a time machine backup.

This indicated the computer cannot find the startup volume per Flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac. If you can boot using the ML install discs open Disk Utility and check to see if the system can see the startup HD on the computer. If it cannot that verifies the HD has failed, which I think has happened anyway. If you want to continue using the machine have the HD replaced, install ML as you had before and then restore from your TM backup to get back to where you were before the crash occurred.

Annoying "Recovered Files" folder in Trash

At first, I saw recovered files for growl in the trash. So I deleted growl because adium insant messenger works fine without it anyway. But now, I'm getting a folder called plugtmp, which contains a file called 's', in the Recovered Files folder. I guess I'm a little obsessive compulsive but I don't like seeing this recovered files folder in my trash all the time. What do I do to stop it?

yea, i know it's not a big deal. But like i said, i'm pretty OCD lol. This knd of thing shouldn't be happening. Programs usually delete temporary files on their own without moving them to the trash. Of course this kind of stuff only happens to people like me....

GBAND 10.0.2 FREEZE FILES FOLDER ?

Using Gband 10.0.2 and after locking a track for exporting to my dropbox, I can't find the
"Freeze Files" folder.
Any ideas on how to trace the folder please.?
I've tried looking via the Finder bit the folder does not show up.

The time is not the limit - Garageband has a maximum number of measures - 1999 measures.

So, it will depend in the tempo, if you can go beyond 90 minutes. If you set the tempo to 40 bpm, youcan record more than 3 hours.

You can also do a "get info" (cmd+i) on the file/folder and set permissions for access under "Sharing and Permissions" at the bottom of the window (you may have to click the lock and authenticate yourself first).

Un-'Locking' multiple files in multiple folders....

So I just spent 2 hours at the 'Genius' bar manually 'unlocking' hundreds if not thousands of photos in my 'iPhoto' (05) library in order to upgrade to iPhoto '06... apparently, when I imported some pictures from Windows... it brought them in as 'locked' (i.e. when you 'get info...' on a file, and it has the 'Locked' check-box checked), well apparently, in order to upgrade to iPhoto '06, you have to 'unlock' every single file... given the way that iPhoto stores your files, if you've got a few locked, scattered throughout your library, it's going to take a LONG time to find them all and unlock them.
My question for the Mac OS X specialists at large is, "Is there a way to un-lock multiple files in multiple directories and folders, WITHOUT doing it manually? I can't believe I actually sat at a genius bar and did this for TWO hours. According to my Genius, that was the only way to do it. Are there any other Genius' out there that may have a differing opinion? Keep in mind, he was one of 2 or 3 native english speakers (here in the very busy Shibuya, Tokyo store) any solutions would be appreciated, because it appears I've got multiple files in my MacBook iPhoto library that are 'locked' and I'd like to find an easier way to unlock them.
FYI, we went to finder and searched for 'other' "Files Write Protected" etc., but we were never able to find ONLY files that are locked... is there a better way? Surely there has to be. Looking forward to learning something new.

There's also a Terminal command that will work:
Launch Terminal from your utilities folder, and enter this command:
find /Users/yourname/Pictures/"iPhoto Library"/ -flags uchg -exec chflags nouchg {} \;
Be sure you get the "spaces" right, including the ones before and after the curly braces--{}--and there is no space between \; and it should work just fine. You may want to just copy and paste the above into a text program, fill in your short user name, then copy and paste into Terminal. And it must be all one line. After you've entered the command, hit the Return key to execute it. It will look in your iPhoto Library folders for all files that have the locked flag, then change the flag to unlocked.

Anyone know of a way to protect, lock or "freeze" file/folder names/labels without locking the associated file or folder?

You cannot do that without changing certain permissions on the files. You can remove write permissions on the files, but then you wouldn't be able to make any changes to them, if you needed to, without restoring write permissions.
Perhaps if you tell us why you've asked about this we could offer some additional ideas, if any.

I'm trying to migrate a few encrypted profiles from Windows XP to Windows 7
I have a disk without "Windows" and "Program Files" Folder with the userprofiles without a backup of recovery agent and related certificates.
By USMT or in another way it is possible a deployment and recovery (also partial) of these userprofiles folders? These data can be accessible in some way or there are lost forevar?
During USMT deployment by scanstate/loadstate cmdline tools: I used to be specify a KeyString
after the switch command "/encrypt /efs:". I can blank "/efs:" argument during USMT Deployment?

If you run your system as a non-administrator, then the other user's folders are locked.
If you then use Fast Switching, those folders are merely a mouse click (and password) away.
