Aperture 3.5 + Mavericks external storage problems

Aperture 3.5 + Mavericks external storage problems
After upgrading to 3.5 and Mavericks, all my projects referencing files stored on NAS show blurry or black and not responding to edit commands. Sometimes Aperture crashes. The projects/photos were okay before upgrade. Also new projects on NAS show blurry or black or fail totally to import photos. If I move the same photos to the local drive, everything is just fine.
I am using NFS to access the NAS.
Reading through this forum I found some reports of similar behavior from people storing photos on USB external drives.
This seems to be only when referencing files located on an external drive. No problems if files are copied to the Aperture library.
Any similar experience?

Referenced files on a NAS was always an gray area. While it worked for most users most of the time it wasn;t clear that Apple supported the configuration.
The Apple documents on Aperture and non-locally attached drives can be read in a number of different ways. Of course the library definitely had to be on a local drive (and even here some users reported success with the library on a NAS) but referenced masters were never explicitly mentioned either way.
Most users had success with the originals on a NAS but even with earlier version of Aperture and the OS there were always the occasional report of problems. When push-came-to -shove if moving the referenced originals to a local drive fixed the problems there wasn;t much else that could be done.
Since the release of 3.5 and Mavericks it does appear that referenced originals on a NAS do not work at all in most cases.  The best we can do here, being just users like yourself, is to suggest you contact Apple and try to get through to the Aperture team and see if you can get a definitive answer.
As for problems with referenced originals on locally connected drives, I'm not aware of any widespread problems. In the few cases I've seen it has come down to some issue with the OP's system.
Having your whole workflow and setup knocked out from under you like this is really bad, unfortunately there isn't much anyone here can do for this problem.

  • 10.9 (Mavericks) External Display Problem

Recently I made the upgrade to OS X 10.9 and now I start to having problems with the resolution of my sceen. I have a LG Flatron E2250V and it work perfectly in OS X 10.8.3, the recomend resolution for this display is 1920x1084 but right now the system only give me 1600x1200 option, thereby is in a wrong frecuency for my screen.
About 3 month ago I try to upgrade the sistem to OS X 10.8.4 and I had the same problem.

    TheSmokeMonster,
Sadly resetting the PRAM doesn't work.
Was the first thing I tried.
Many people was waiting during OS X Lion to this fix, it was fixed in Mountain,
really ridiculous. Maybe this time we need to wait one year again to use just an

But it seems the OP has a setup where the media is on the external drive, and the library files are on the internal. This is what I refer to as a split library, Migrating such from one computer to another is not straightforward. Often iTunes will have some definite idea about where the files should live, and updating the setting of the media folder won't change that. If it requires a drive letter change that is usually not too hard, but sometimes there is another preference file that needs tweaking to indicate which of the old & new layouts for the library is being used. In more extreme cases I have a script for automatically making track by track repairs.

  • Serious external drive problems after installing Mavericks

OK, so now I am seeing multiple external drive problems. Here is my setup: A GTech 4TB drive connected to MacBook Pro via Firewire, formatted of 2 partitions of 2TB each (called GT1 and GT2). This is then daisy chained to two WD drives of 2TB each, called WD1 and WD2.
After installing Mavericks everything worked fine (in fact I have an amazing speed increase). However, after restarting my machine this morning I have the following issues:
The GTech is now a single partition called MyBook (obviously a hangover from the WD drives. I suspect the WD drive managment software) with NO data files. Interestingly it shows the following USED 1,106,870,272 bytes (1.11 GB on disk). This suggests that one of the partitions has disapeared completely.
Whilst WD 1 launces ok, WD 2 causes the Finder to relaunch whenever selected, meaning I can't get to the files. I remember having this problem before when I upgraded to SL, and it having something to do with hidden files that needed to be deleted via the terminal. However, I have searched the web and can't find the solution again.
Given that WD 1 and 2 are my backups of GT 1 and 2, then I now have a situation where I cannot access my primary or backup files for GT 2. Very impressive - not!
Can anbody remember the hidden file solution for the finder relaunch?
Can anybody help me get back my GT1 and 2 partitions (as they have the latest work on them)?

FIrewire & Thunder bolt drives are having issues with Mavericks, avoid same until a fix is issued if you can.
many are reporting same, there is a firewire fault and TB HD on external HD from LaCie (Seagate) and from WD especially.
    Technicians are looking into it.
Until there is resolution, consider setting up a USB ext. Time machine HD.
Until then consider confining Mavericks use with USB HD.
Ive tested a very long line of USB HD on Mavericks, all seem fine.
Recommend anyone DO NOT ATTACH any WD MyBook externals (firewire, thunderbolt or otherwise).
I dont have same to test, so I dont know if the problem is in the firmware on the SATA bridge or if its a problem with the WD software

By default if you plug in a usb storage device only an item in /dev is added, but nothing mounted. The permissions and mount point depend on the application that does the actual mounting (pmount/udev/thunar/.../).

  • Best tool to archive data from DW to external storage.

    Hi,
I want to archive the data of couple of tables in DW at regular interval to some external storage. This archived file will be loaded in relational table again for read only processing later when required. These table's data has got retention period so data gets deleted after retention period. The table is partitioned on ACTION_DATE column.
I don't have access to filesystem on DW servers so will prefer to avoid to store any file on filesystem.
    We are using Oracle 10.2.
Following are three options I can think of:
    1) Use exp / imp tools to get data from required tables. I will be running this script daily so I can take data of one partition only (feature supported by exp/imp). I will want to import data in DW to some other table (table with different name to original table but same schema) when required sometime later for processing because of retention period issue. But imp do not support this option. Or at least I do not know of any .
    2) Use expdb/impdb tools. It will help as it is faster to exp/imp and also it has REMAP_TABLE feature which can help me to load data in table with different name. But the problem with this approach is impdb/expdb requires/stores file on server (in this case DW servers ). As mentioned I am not preferring for this solution. If we have a convenient way to get the data on client side and put back on server when impdb has to be executed this option can be used. Or some other approach using expdb/impdb tools.
    3) Use spool /sqlloader. Haven't explored a lot about this option yet. But am concerned about efficiency of this solution. Also the complexity of implementation with this approach. Spool will give required data in csv format and it will be loaded later using sqlloader.
Please help me with selecting an approach here. Also if anyone has a better solution for the above problem please do mention about the same.
    Thanking in advance.

If all the photos  etc. are on your iPhone, you can back them up after you get your SSD going. If there is more in the backup on your failing HD, you can try copying it manually.
    TimLitch wrote:
I assume just syncing with the new SSD installed will wipe the phone..?
Not necessarily. In iTunes Preferences>Devices you can check the box "Prevent iPod, iPhone, iPad etc. from syncing automatically."
Then you can back up iPhone to your computer or iCloud.
In Internet Recovery you are given options -- to erase the hd or ssd and install Mavericks, or restore from Time Machine.
Before you do it you should make a note of your Superduper registration number in case you have to download it again.

  • External storage for early 08 mac pro for video storage and editing

    Early 08 Mac Pro mod 3.1, 2x Intel 2.8 Quad Core Processors. Bus speed 1.6 Ghz.  10 GB DDR2 FB-Dimm 800 MHz. USB2, Firewire 400, 800. ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCIe 256 mbVRAM.  Currently running OS 10.6.8.
I use machine for photo and video storage and editing. I tried using 2x 3TB and 2x1TB HDD internally ( 8 TB total).  All are Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200.  Experienced constant spinning wheel and lockup requiring manual shutdown.  I had upgraded to Lion and to Maverick.  Did not help so I did a clean install of primary with  Snow Leopard and did not install past 10.6.8.  Works now if I don’t exceed 3.5 TB internally.  I also discovered that my Disk Permissions experienced voluminous corruption that could not be repaired if I installed  Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 17 as suggested each time I check for software updates.
I need to be able to have a total of about six TBs available in my system for storage and editing of video via Imovie. I don’t know the maximum of HDD storage that can be used in the four internal bays without causing lockup and corruption. If 3.5 TB is about the max, then I would like to have some ability to have external storage via firewire 800 if that would facility fast enough transfer for either video edition and or playback. I don’t know if thunderbolt can be installed via PCI card. I could add a SATA PCI card.  However, I assume that would cause the same problem as experienced with 8 TBs installed internally in the four bays.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

Do you mean 2x2TB and 2x3TB for a total internal capacity of 10TBs?  Are you running Snow Leopard or something else? Actually, I took it to an authorized repair facility who ran checks and said nothing is wrong with the hardware.
Yes, I've got a total of to TB and I'm running Snow Leopard.  If your hardware checks out, that pretty much makes it a software problem,,,  reinstall the OS?
Does the High Point Technologies SATA3 PCIe connect to eternal drive enclosures or does it somehow connect to drives in some of your four internal bays?
Highpoint makes several RocketRAID 2700 series SATA3 controllers for Mac with external mini-SAS connectors, probably the cleanest/least expensive external hook-up. They also offer a combo internal/external board that (for marketing reasons) is listed as not working for internals with Mac Pro.  I believe that this is due to pressure from Apple (who apparently does some business with High Point Tech) but to the best of my knowledge it will. Technically, the "not supported" statement is true since all the internal bays are tied to the motherboard SATA 2 controller, but this can be remedied with a special cable.  HOWEVER... the boards are not bootable, so your system disk needs to be on the motherboard controller.
In truth, I bought one of their 8-port "internal only" boards designated for PC only and flashed it so the Mac Pro sees it as a 2722 board, so I have 8 internal ports.  I'm not recommending you do the same unless you're pretty geeky, but the 2721 would give you half-and-half or the 2722 would give you 8 external with no mods to the board.

  • Workflow on-board and external storage

    Workflow on-board and external storage
My photography is expanding rapidly, such that I have quickly run out of space on my harddrive, although my MacBook Pro is under 1 year old and when I bought it, was over dimensioned.
I'm looking for an updated storage / availability / backup solution.
I have recently purchased Aperture but I still use iPhoto in parallel. I import all photos into iPhoto and mostly sort them there, because I find it easier, not yet having had the time to discover whether Aperture can do it better. I use Aperture primarily for editing.
I also use iPhoto Library Manager, to organize a dozen mostly unimportant libraries on an external drive, available when I'm in the office.
My dilema is that I am traveling extensively and have even been buying small 1TB drives on the road to keep up with my need to back-up my SDHC cards.
I like the convenience of having everything "with me", but with the exponential need for more space I might have to change my thinking. Bandwidth constraints on-the-road and also the "waste of time aspect" suggest that small portable drives are possibly the best solution.
When back in the office however, I would also like to have "everything with me", daisy-chained or however, but I'm primarily looking for a professional workflow solution, which will also accommodate my travel requirements. Exchangeable drives which can be use in an "ice-box" type solution are OK for project based assignments which often can be archived "for ever". However, the (occasional*) need for access in remote countries creates problems and I'm not a friend of Cloud solutions. *Often when I'm away I have more peace and quiet for archiving and sorting old photo shoots then when I'm in the office.
Aperture will possibly become my preferred editor, but I am open.
Sorry if this is long, but I tried to cover everything which occurred to me to avoid excess "ping-pong."
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Having trouble backing up Aperture Library to an external hard drive

I'm using a brand new 27" imac and simply trying to back up my Aperture Library from my finder menu to my external drive. My Aperture Library currently is about 65gb. The file starts transferring (takes about an hour), and about 2/3 of the way through it, I get an error message that states "The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “Aperture Library” already exists." The operation stops, and the file size of my Aperture Library on my external drive ends up about 45mb approx, only partially transferred, so not a full backup. Happens every time. I have deleted everything and reformatted my external drive and still get the same message. When I try to create a vault and back it up on my external drive, I get an immediate error that states "The new vault could not be created because the file system of the destination volume is unsupported". Any ideas how to address this? All I really want to do is have an off-site backup of my full Aperture library.

You will have this problem using that format, the Library needs to be on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You can reformat the drive. Or you could try creating a disk image formatted correctly and putting the library on that, then storing that on the MS format drive.

  • How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?

How can I migrate an Aperture library from an external HDD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) format?
I used to store my pictures on an external hard drive using the latest version of Aperture. Now I tried migrating my Aperture library to Photos. However, after a short moment an error message popped up telling me that "Photos was unable to make a copy of your library before preparing it. Photos does not have the necessary permissions...".
My external HDD doesn't need any permission repairs nor is the system prohibited to read from or write to it.
Thanks for any advice in advance!

My guess is that the encryption is the problem for the new app.

There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

  • [t431s] Code 28 in Device Manager for all external storage.

I'm using Windows 8.1 on a t431s. I'm having this problem where none of my external storage is being recognized. Under "Device Manager" any sort of external storage I plug in ends up under "Other devices". When I click on the device, I get Code 28 "The drivers for this device are not installed." Trying to update the driver brings me nowhere. The devices don't appear under disk management.
What's weird is that other USB peripherals such as mice and USB headphones don't have any problem.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    Updated the BIOS.
Used Lenovo's SCCM package for Windows 8.1
Tried installing the individual drivers for each hard drive.
Nothing works! What's going on here?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

    Hi, Buggy
After doing a bit of research. It seems your not the only one with this issue. WD has had this issue with even Windows 7 since 2012 with other Passport models.
I honestly recommend seeking support with WD about this issue if you have not done so already as the ones who where able to fix this issue did so with updated drivers from WD.

  • My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

My MacBook Pro hard drive is almost full and I wish to store my Aperture Library on an external drive, how do I do this and is the use of USB2 suitable or do I need to use a Firewire external hard drive?

You'll get better performance if you use a Firewire hard drive (especially if you buy a 7200 RPM drive). Firewire's IO speed is significantly faster than USB 2.  USB 2 has a theoretical max speed of 480 Mbps except that it has extremely high over-head.   The fastest speeds you can typically get are about 300 Mbps.   Firewire, on the other hand, has very little overhead.  The fastest speeds you can get are very nearly 800 Mbps.  You will typically be constrained by the maximum read/write speed of the drive, not the speed of the I/O on the Firewire bus.  Now if you had one of those nice shiny new Macs with the Thunderbolt I/O and a Thunderbolt drive (Light Peak) ... I think they alter space and time so that your data arrives before you know you want it.
Also... unless you want to buy a solid state drive (very expensive), try to keep your hard drives from becoming much more than about 60% full if you want great performance.  A nearly "full" hard drive is, on average, only about half as fast as the same hard drive when nearly empty.
USB 2 will work perfectly fine... just not as fast.
Also... it's much safer to move the entire Aperture library than to "relocate masters".  Your images must be managed.  You can Aperture manage them, or you can manage them.  But someone has to manage them.  If you "relocate" them so that they are no longer stored inside the Aperture library then you'll need to work out a system of how you decide to organize things and it's critically important that you don't start moving files around or deleting things without Aperture's knowledge.  If you do, you'll break the links to your masters and start having problems with missing masters.  If you have Aperture manage the library then you don't need to worry about any of that stuff.... it's safer.
Do make backups (use the Aperture Vault or use some other backup program, but make sure you back up your work if you care about it.)  There are only two kinds of hard drives in the world:  (1) those that have failed and (2) those that are going to fail.  There are no exceptions to this rule.  Hard drives are cheap.  Backup software is built into Aperture and into your Mac.

  • Restoring aperture library from an external hard drive?

I have a major issue with my aperture library. It crashed completely and it turns out that the back up I have on my time machine was corrupted because of a hard disk error. I found this out after buying a new mac and while trying to migrate the old library to the new mac. I kept getting error message -36.
The situation is now as follows:
    - I have the full Aperture library on an external hard disk that I recovered from my crashed mac
    - I can acces and copy the indivial pictures via the master folder, but cannot copy the entire library. If I try this it give me an error (-36)
    - I can see the individual photo files via (click, 'view content'), and can copy them in groups, but not as a whole. It turns out that If I try to copy the master folder, there are some corrupt images there and the copy exercise then quits automatically. It does not allow me to delete the corrupt images.
    - when i try to restore the the library via aperture (so opening it with aperture) it keeps saying that my 'permissions' are not set correctly.
Does anyone have an idea to copy the library (24gb worth of photos) without having to go in and copy group by group eliminating the corrupt files?
There must be some way to rebuild the library on my new mac, from the hard disk, as I can see and access the individual pictures?
    Thanks!

    - My old mac ran on Snow Leopard.

+the problem is this, almost every time i start my imac, launch itunes and then play a track purchased from an old itunes account, it keeps asking me to authorize that account. even though i have had previous macs containing itunes content on this old account, it has always played with no issues at all. now then... to try and remedy this, i first of all uninstalled itunes COMPLETELY and reinstalled. this seemed to do the trick but after a few days, it all started again.+
Did you unauthorize your old Mac and authorize this one? You only get a maximum of 5 machines, so maybe you're past that or haven't authorized the new one - to do that, open iTunes, click on Store in Menu. Now, there should be two options: authorize or de-authorize this computer. Click on authorize and report back with whatever message you get.
+on to my second issue, Aperture. the app works fine except, like itunes it constantly asks me to enter the serial number from the box. please note that this is a legitimate copy purchased from the apple online store and i used it for about a year on my old macbook pro with only having to enter the serial during the initial installation.+
The Aperture SLA states that you can install it on two computers - a desktop and a laptop. I don't know if there is any protection embedded in the DVD (if you've already had it installed twice), but if the issue persists, I'd contact the Apple store (since you said that is where you bought it) and ask - or, if you're covered by warranty, simply call Apple. Or, if not, make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar and get answers there. It is perfectly legal to install it again as long as it no longer exists on the old machine - and I don't think it has anything to do with hardware, sounds more like a glitch. Oh, and have you tried to install it fresh, enter the serial, open it to see if it works and then copy over the library?
