Aperture 3 deleting original files

I use a "referenced" library system. So I do not import the images into aperture but leave them on an other drive and only have the previews stored with Aperture.
After deleting the "Master Image and Previews" I still find the original RAW files in on the other drive.
I would like to delete all the unwanted images avoiding double work and the risk of deleting a wanted image.

First select *File->Delete Master Image and all Versions* then empty Aperture's trash. You get a pop-up confirming that you really want to empty Aperture's trash.
At the bottom of the pop-up you can click the checkbox *Move referenced files to system trash*.

  • Delete original file (from camera)

    Hi all,
I use iPhoto and Photoshop on my Mac for different purposes: iPhoto for family events and travel that I won't be doing much (if any) editing to, and Photoshop (Elements 7) for my hobby photography pictures.
I got on Photoshop this morning to import some recent photos from my camera, hooked things up as always, opened Bridge CS3, and selected File>Get photos from camera.
For some reason, I can't find the Delete Original Files checkbox in the Photo Downloader screen (whereas it shows up here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Bridge/2.0/help.html?content=WSEC378273-AF69-4a1e-9CD8-10 8420C556ED.html). I could be totally wrong, but thought I've always done things this way in the past to reduce a lot of tiny-camera-button-clicking through tons of photos.
Did this button disappear with a version update? Do I have some other option set incorrectly to not allow this one to appear? Or has the button never been there, and if not, is there a way to delete photos in mass from my camera?
Thanks for any & all help,
    Lori Ann

What you saw was a screenshot of Bridge CS4, somewhat misleading regarding the URL mention Bridge 2.0 in fact it is Bridge 3.0 that comes with CS4. And for some strange reason they added this option to Photodownloader CS4, IMO that energy could have been used better...
However as per Ramón, using this way is also in my opinion not the best way to work. If you don't want or have a card reader (again, not wise :-) ) then only download image from the camera and after this disconnect the camera and use the camera menu itself to format the CF card and start with a fresh and empty CF card.
BUT, don't do this before you have checked if the files you have copied to the computer are OK to open and again a wise thing would be to first make a back-up (if you study the downloader options a little you will see that this is also an option you can (or in fact should) use.

  • Aperture 3: Deleting raw files and making the jpeg my new master-

Aperture 3 has made some great strides in making the following possible ( I posted this originally in 2007):
What I'd like to do is shoot everything in raw + jpg, and then keep the raw files only for the important shots.
I really like having the option of raw processing, but the storage demands are very heavy. If I could just make a selection of photos in a roll, and have a command to delete any unneeded raw files from the selected photos, while keeping the original jpgs as master, that would be great.
Also, it would be great to be able to manipulate a raw file, and then when I'm satisfied with the image, to render a high-quality jpg from that raw file & make the jpg the new master, and then delete the raw file to free up disk space.
Basically, I want the raw file safety net for everyday images, without gobbling up gigabytes of disk space <<<<<
With Aperture 3, I can finally change the master to the jpg file, which solves part of the problem. But I still want to be able to manipulate my raw file, and render a new high-quality jpg master.
Why don't Aperture / Lightroom do this? To me at least, it seems an obvious feature.

I had a chance to talk to product managers from both Apple & Adobe about this at PhotoPlus Expo in NYC a couple years back. Both seemed receptive, but here we are - years later - no progress.
I think part of the problem is that there's a purist mentality about RAW files. One should always shoot them - and then keep them forever- after all- they're your negatives!
But what about event photography? Or weddings, as you pointed out? It makes no sense to burden your workflow & backup system with 4GB of RAW files of people grinning into the camera. Once the adjustments have been made, the RAW files are just a ball & chain on your data management. And let's not forget, once you really know what you're doing, your jpegs should be good most of the time anyway.
I want RAW files as a safety net for errors in exposure and white balance. Once I know I have good photos, I don't need the safety net anymore- at least not at the price of all that hard disk space and transfer time for online backup. Of course, for my fine art stuff and important documentary work, I'll always keep the RAWs permanently. But not for routine parties/events.
You put your finger on the problem with re-importing jpegs as a solution. You lose your metadata- rankings/album memberships, etc. This is no solution!
What I want is simple, and it would be immediately useful to countless photographers:
    1) Let me batch-delete RAW files when the jpegs are ok.
    2) Let me do adjustments on my RAW file, render out a high-quality jpeg, and make the jpeg my new master.
Whoever does this first - Aperture or Lightroom - that's the product I'll use.

  • Deleting Original Files

I just purchased Aperture 3. One of the main reasons I purchased it was to use it to cull through the massive amounts of photos I seem to take at various events I do photography for. However, I have yet to find a way to use Aperture to remove the original photos I import to my hard drive. I would like to selected a photo and use a sinlge command to do away with it altogether - version, master & original file from the Finder. Is this possible? Am I missing something?
    Thanks

Select the image and do a 'File->Delete master and all versions'
If the masters are referenced you will need to select the checkbox to also delete referenced masters when you empty the Aperture trash. The checkbox will be in the empty trash confirmation window.
Of course you will have to empty the system trash when you are done.
There is no way to delete internal Aperture files (such as versions) from the finder.

  • Removing email attachement deletes original files ?

    Hi,
    I have a strange "bug" when trying to drag back an attachement file from an email that i'm writing to it's original folder. The original file is deleted without any questions and no trace of the file is left anywhere;
Ex.: Start a new mail, drag a file from desktop to the mail, drag back the file from mail to desktop. File on the desktop desapears !?!? and file apears to stays in the email. But if you try to drag it to somewhere else or send the email, you realize that you lost the original and the attached file also.
Does someone know how to recover the file ? or why this is happening ?
PS.: I found that this occurs when the file comes from windows profile folder and his childrens %SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\"Username"...
PS.: Tried to do a recovery on the hard drive with GetDATA Back NTFS without luck
    Thanks for the help !

I bet that would never happen for a sent mail. Does it?
It's probably because it's depending on the filehandle which you broke.
Honestly, I don't see this happening on any normal circumstances. In
fact you are the first I recall.

  • Trying to delete original files on card after Log and Transfer in FC 7

Log and transfer is working great. But how do I delete the original files on my 32 gb class 6 card? Can't just select and hit delete. In fact theres a typo in the pop up box, "Warning, The selected media cannot deleted". They forgot the "be". Weird.

    Hi,
as you have seen already, you can't delete those files using the L&T menu; however you can delete those files either from within the camera's menu or accessing the card directly from the OSX.

    Armando.

  • Deleted Original file information

Is there any way One can figure-out the 'Filename' of a 'Deleted' file from DIR?. From what I've seen, system displays the info (as in attached), but not the 'Original Filename' itself.
    -thanks

Yes, the files reside in the original project, what you pasted were pointers to the original files (think: Finder Aliases)
The chances of recovery grow slimmer every moment you use your Mac. If you have software that offers an Undelete function, you might be able to recover the original files. However as you use your Mac, and data is written t the hard drive, the odds increase that the files will be over written with nothing to recover.
    This software offers File Recover.

  • Aperture deleting original file?

I am using Aperture 3.4.4.  OSX 10.7.5.  My library is referenced.  I check the links everytime I use the library.  I do so with a Smart Album that has a Rule with the File Status for Missing.  Today, all of sudden there were 3 photos (out of 9,500) showed up as missing in the Smart Album.  Everything was fine the last time I used the library earlier today.  I was very surprised.  I was even more surprised when I opened up the folder that should contain the original photos.  These photos were missing.  But these photos have been in this folder for years.  I certainly did not delete these photos.  Can it be that Aperture deleted them?  Anyone else may have experienced the same problem?  What may be going on here?
Because I know the file integrity is very important, I often hold down the command and option keys and do a File Repair before I add more photos in the library.  Is this a dangerous procedure?
       Thanks.  Tom

Can Time Machine delete 3 photos when backing up?
I have never heard of something like that happen, but browse the TM forum, if there is any known issue. TM can only delete files, when you accidentally restore a folder to a version, where the files are missing.
But could you restore the missing originals from your backup?
As I said, my Aperture does not respond to changing Date and Time under Batch Change under Metadata
Does it not respond at all, or only change the time of some images? If t does not change all file alles, check the "Primary Only" flag in the Edit" menu, if it has been accidentally set.
BTW: Under Metadata I see "Adjust Date and Time" (not under Batch Change) and "Batch Change > Adjust Time zone".
Which of these options are you asking about?
If you are asking about "Batch Change > Adjust Time zone", that is not working well with some Canon Cameras, but "Metadata >Adjust Date and Time" should work. In what way does it not work? If you select the command, nothing happens? Or is it grayed out?
In that case I would test, if it only happens in your current user account or in all accounts, before you go for a reinstall. If it only happens in your account, trash Apertures Preferences file.

    nice one
    Lloyd

Use these instructions to set the iPod to sync manually, and then delete the songs from iTunes; they will not be automatically deleted from the iPod.

  • Deleted original file, but have movie on DVD (movie I made)

I was cleaning up my computer the other day and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to delete the iDVD project I used to create my movie. I still had the movie's file, so I thought, so I did not need the iDVD project. Well, I deleted the project and now when i try to open the movie it will not open. I did not export the movie to Quicktime before I deleted it. Is there a way I can download my video back to my computer so I can have a copy on my PC. I would like to be able to watch it on my iPod.

Not 100% sure where your movie currently lives; on the computer, on the ipod or perhaps neither at this point in time. But apparently you did produce a completed iDVD ..... is this correct?
If so there is another app you can use to extract the video from the completed DVD (perhaps at a somewhat lesser quality) and then import back into iMovie in the form of a QT file (which should play fine on the ipod as well). And then if you wish export to iDVD, or whatever else you wish to do with it. Recommend you review the following link. Try the demo ... it's a free 30 day trial / download ....as opposed to paying for additional roxio products. Popcorn will also work, but why pay if you can get the same results free?
I happen to also own roxio popcorn as well. It's a great product to compress extra long movies onto a standard DVD-R media. However, I'm not sure i'd want to reimport that highly compressed data right back into iMovie.

SOLVED! (I love LR).  LR Viewer helped to restore files in satisfying quality.

  • HELP!!! Aperture can't find original files!

Help!!! I imported a 64 Gig SD Card into Aperture for an engagement shoot. It imported the files, about 2,000 CR2 files.  I had to clear the SD card to do another shoot.  When I returned to Aperture, it shows a thumbnail of the file, but yellow exclamation point saying ORIGINAL IMAGE NOT FOUND!!!  I'm guessing Aperture tried saving original files to the SD card and NOT my hard drive.  When I was clearing the card, highlighted the files and put them in the trash on my IMAC.  Then I emptied the trash.  I also re-formatted the card on my Canon.  So... I have downloaded Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery, Data Rescue 3, and ISkysoft Data Recovery to see if they will either recover files I emptied from my trash, OR recover the files on the SD card.  I can't find the files!  To this point, this my best work as a photographer.  I'm mortified!  If someone will help me I will be indebted to you forever.  Thank you!

If you really deleted the files, there is little hope, but data recovery.
If you have you not restarted your mac, since you imported the images, don't do it., before checking the caches. Sometimes Aperture will write to the $TMPDIR, if the drive it trying to write to gets offline during import.
Check these system folders, if youcan  find any cr2 files:
    Quit Aperture.
Open a Terminal window and enter the following two line:
    open $TMPDIR
This will open a Finder window with cryptically named folders. Dive into them and look for Aperture's Media cache folder. Are there any image files in the folder "com.apple.Aperture"?
Sometimes Aperture will write to that directory, if it cannot write to the Aperture library.
    Also check the following location:
    open /tmp
Can you find any images in the these two caches?
When I returned to Aperture, it shows a thumbnail of the file, but yellow exclamation point saying ORIGINAL IMAGE NOT FOUND!!!  I'm guessing Aperture tried saving original files to the SD card and NOT my hard drive.
    Are you using Aperture 3.5.1?
This version will tell you, where the missing originals should be, when you select the thumbnails and use the command "File > Show in Finder". When I try this, I get a panel showing the path to the missing original. Does that really point to a file on your SD card?
What are your Import settings in Aperture? What is set in the "Store files" option? "In the Aperture library " or something else?

  • How to Locate Original Files in Aperture Once Version Deleted from Library

I have a very large aperture library (250GB). For a long time, I have maintained my library by deleting only the "versions" of photos that I do not like (File-Delete Version), not realizing that the originals were still there. I would like to also delete the originals (master), since they are large RAW files taking up a lot of space. But with the versions now gone from my library, I do not know how to locate the original files to delete. Is there any way for me to do this?
I feel like there should be a way to find out if there are any original files not associated with a corresponding version in the library, to allow you to recover accidently deleted files.  That would be a start, but I can't find a way to do it. Thanks.

Also, I visited the Apple store recently and was told that deleting the version does not delete the master, and they even showed me on their computers where files deleted from the library were stored (they did this by "File-Open Library in iPhoto," highlighting all the images, and then "File-Reveal in Finder-Original File."
For a managed library: "Delete version" will only delete the selected version, if there is more than one version of the the same image. But if you only have one version left, delete version will delete the original file as well. An original is of no use, if you do not have a version to reference it.  The " File-Delete Original Image and All Versions" option is there to be able to delete all versions at once, together with the original file.
For a referenced library you will be prompted, if you want to delete the referenced original, if you are deleting the last version.
Just try it for a managed library. Import an image and use "Delete version" for the last version.  The version will be moved to Aperture's Trash. And if you empty the trash, you will find the original version in the Trash in your Dock. And it cannot be put back from the Trash.
You will be prompted, if you really want to delete the file, when you empty Aperture's Trash.
The App Store genius must have shown you a referenced library, when the original was not removed after deleting the version, or they did not delete the last version, if it was a managed library.

  • Aperture installation deleted all image files from MacBook Pro.

After installing Aperture 3, I noticed that all the image files I had on my MacBook Pro immediately disappeared. These were stored in various locations throughout my computer depending on subject (e.g. "Emergency Response Training", "Summer 2009", "Car Restoration" and so on). A small number were in the "Pictures" folder but most were kept in other locations. All the folders and subfolders where these images were stored are intact but the images are gone. There is simply a "thumbs.db" file inside and the folder size is about 6 kb on average.
I did nothing other than install Aperture (no importing or library creation) and none of these images or folders are in the Aperture library. A similar thing happened with iPhoto where all my iphoto thumbnails show up but there appears to be no actual photo. No images prior to Aperture installation appear anywhere on the Macbook using tailored queries with "Find".
Apple support indicated that Aperture would not search out these photos unless prompted and would never delete them but It's hard to imagine how else this could have happened, as it happened only during installation (subsequent photos are fine) and targeted all image files in every location. Hard drive is new and indicates no problems.
Any ideas what might have happened - and, more importantly, how I might be able to recover the missing images? Unfortunately, my upgrade to Lion obliterated my DNS 321 back up disk, as well, and I don't yet know if I can recover those files.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Apple support claimed it was impossible for Aperture to delete files, as well, Allen. All I can tell you is I installed Aperture and the files immediately disappeared. I installed Aperture with the intention of learning its capabilities over the ensuing months, as I had never used it before, and so made sure to do nothing but install and launch so I could have a look at it and see how it was set up.
The network hard drive obliteration occured when I was trying to transfer novie files from my Macbook to my DNS 321 network drive, which I use to store all my backups and most of my media files. I've done this countless times with Snow Leopard without a hitch. However, when I tried it with Lion the system locked up during the transfer and I lost my connection to the drive. Once I managed to reconnect, I found that I couldn't get into the folders on the network drive anymore. All that would come up was a "My Documents" folder, which had no content. After doing a websearch I discovered that Lion no longer supports DNS 321 and that others with similar style drives had been having similar problems. What might be unique to my situation was that when I hooked up an old PC to the DNS 321 I was able to get back into my original folder set up but I found that the folders labelled from (A to J) were missing entirely and that the remaining folders had no content.
So, as I mentioned in my first post, the only input from me was installation and launch of Aperture and the only thing I was doing with my network drive was transferring movie files from the Macbook to the DNS 321 drive. If neither of those actions could possibly have caused the problems I described, I'd be very eager to learn what did.

  • HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
    Which is best ?

    DrewPowell wrote:

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.
