Aperture 3 RAW file edited in Photoshop

I did this according to the Aperture 3 Manual:
"...select an image and choose Photos > Edit With > [application name]. Aperture makes a new master and version of your image and opens it in Adobe Photoshop. After you make your changes and save the image, the revised version automatically reappears in Aperture. The external editor doesn’t change the original master."
I exported the RAW file as a 16-bit PSD file, made changes and I saved the Photoshop edited file with the same file name. It updated the Aperture image, but there is no other image, just the PS-edited file with the sigil that means  "The photo has been edited with an external editor, and is therefore represented by the original created when the file was exported to the external editor."
But I cannot see the original master file. It's not stacked, it's not moved, it's simply gone. How do I get the original RAW master back along side the PS edited version to make more/other edits?
Brian

Are your raw files part of a raw+jpeg pair or raw-only?
When I tried to reproduce your problem, but for me the external edit is working as described in the manual.
Set the "External Editor Format" to 16 bit psd in the "Export" preferences.
Select the image in Aperture's browser and use the command "Photos > Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS 6"
Edit Photoshop and use "File > Save", not "Save as".
What exactly do you see, when you are using Photoshop as an external editor?
As soon as I use "Photos > Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS 6", the new PSD version will appear alongside the raw, and after I save the file in Photoshop, the thumbnail will be updated.
Do you also see the new version appear, before Photoshop opens?
The only way I cannot see the versions side by side, is if I do not set the sorting in the browser to "Date", or if the search field is not cleared.  You may want to check the sorting of the project and check for filters.
For example: Editing a raw-jpeg pair, first with "8bit tiff" export, then with "16bit psd" export.
If clearing filters and changing the sorting does not bring the original back, I'd try to repair the Aperture library - this may recover missing originals in a "Recovered" project.

  • HOW-TO: Making Master File Editable in Photoshop

If you are comfortably using sqlite3, it is possible to make your master psd and raw files editable in photoshop.
Here is how I did it. You need to update two tables in aperture's database that contain a field named ZISEXTERNALLYEDITABLE. This field is found in the tables ZRKFILE and ZRKVERSION.
In Aperture, set your external editor as Photoshop. Your psd files will open with all layers intact and not flattened. Nef files will open in ACR.
If you create a version, you will still get a flattened file.
My sql is a little rusty. I would like someone to show me the sql to update both these tables at once, instead of my crude example below.
    update ZRKFILE set ZISEXTERNALLYEDITABLE = 1 where ZNAME = "D2H_04255.psd";
    update ZRKVERSION set ZISEXTERNALLYEDITABLE = 1 where ZNAME = "D2H_04255";
Note that ZNAME in ZRKVERSION does not contain a file extension.
    Merry Christmas

In the previous hint it will change the database, but not the XML - so if for some reason you lost the database and it had to rebuild from the XML your changes would be lost.
So, you should also mirror the changes in the XML - browse into the Aperture library (with finder), then into your project, then down into the directories until you come to the one holding the master you want to edit externally.
Edit the file there with a name like "IMG24449.tif.apfile" - the best way is to just double-click on it which opens up property editor. Open up the "root" item, and you'll see a row that looks like:
    isExternallyEditable Boolean ^ No
Just click on the "no" and you can change it to "yes", then save and quit.
In fact if the SQL previously mentioned scares you a bit, you can change that here and then start Aperture with Shift-CMD to rebuild the database, which I think will include the changes from the XML file in the new database (note that a database rebuild may take some time if you have a lot of images).
Note that another interesting use of this trick would be to make Aperture think an externally edited version was in fact not editable, which means that further Aperture edits of that version would not create a new one as they do now (though it would also mean you could not open that exact version PSD or TIFF in Photoshop through Aperture).

  • Processing RAW files in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11

Hello.. Am I able to process RAW files in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, or do I have to purchase Lightroom 5 in order to access ACR?
    I have a Panasonic Lumix G5 camera.
    Thank You,

Yes, but first update the camera raw plug-in from the menu in Full Edit (Expert Mode)

  • Lightroom 5 file edited in photoshop cc 2014 does not appear back next to original after save. Is anyone else having this issue? If so what is the fix.  The edited image appears back in lightroom in a new folder.

Lightroom 5 file edited in photoshop cc 2014 does not appear back next to original after save. Is anyone else having this issue? If so what is the fix.  The edited image appears back in lightroom in a new folder.

I'm performing a normal "Save", not "Save As". Work flow I'm using is as follows:  Select photo in Lightroom 5.7 >" Edit In" Photoshop CC 2014 > (after working on photo is PS) > Save > close PS. Photo returns to Lightroom 5.7 in a new folder rather than next to the original. Prior to purchasing the monthly plan and upgrading to PS CC 2014, I performed this same work flow using Lightroom 5.6 and Photoshop CS6 without any issues.
Just for fun... I attempted to move the edited file back into the original folder. I received a prompt that said the file already existed in the original folder, however I can't see it except the new folder that LR created. I tried several different sort orders, etc without any success.
*** Follow up: Was unable to resolve the issue using Photoshop CC 2014. Uninstalled PS CC 2014 and went back to using Photoshop CS6. Return trips from LR 5.7 to Photoshop is now performing as it should: returning edited photo back to the original folder in LR 5 and placing next to the original image.
Should anyone have a suggestion on getting Photoshop CC 2014 to do the same, I would love to be educated.
    Thanks for the help, dj_paige.

  • Just bought Nikon D600, can't open the raw file from my Photoshop element 9, please adivise.  Thanks

Can't open the raw file in my Photoshop Element 9 from my new Nikon D600, please help. many thanks
    Brian

    Hi,
The D600 requires camera raw version 7.3 or later - that is not compatible with Photoshop Elements 9.
    You need to either
    1) upgrade to Photoshop Elements 11 or 12
    or
    2) you can download the free Adobe DNG converter to convert you NEF files to DNG files and then PSE 9 can read the DNG files
The latest version of the DNG converter that you can use will depend on your operating system.
    For XP or Vista :
    DNG Converter 8.3
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5694
    For Windows 7 or 8
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.5
    For Mac
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 8.5

  • Aperture 3 workflow with raw files edited in Capture NX2

I purchased Aperture as a data management tool. I used to use Expression Media for this purpose but it is not supported with snow leopard. I have many raw files which were edited in Capture NX2. The adjustments to these raw files are not reflected upon import in aperture. I understand this due to the non-destructive nature of Capture. I am trying to develop a new system to work through this. One idea is to create a duplicate of these adjusted files and save this as a tiff. Therefore my adjustments would be reflected in aperture. However, any metatdata added or other category information used would not be saved back to the raw file only the tiff. The double files create a headache upon import because I do not see an option to import only tiff's. They would have to be saved in another location.
I am sure that others have struggled through this and come up with a good system. I plan to continue using the Nikon programs as raw file converters and to do editing. Aperture's primary purpose is as a data management program.
    Any ideas and comments appreciated.
    Thanks,

The system you have is the one i use and several other photographers i know use, the NX2 edits are not imported into AP3 and never will be, nor for that matter in any program bar NX2 as the information is proprietary to Nikon.
So if needed (and its small now with AP3) i export master and use NX2 edit the file resave the NEF file and also a TIFF or JPEG and then re-import into a sub section marked NEF Edits.

  • Working with Raw Files in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11

I shoot in Raw format with a Canon EOS 60D, when I import raw files into Elements it first loads Adobe Camera Raw. After working on an image & then opening the file in Elements 11  ( Expert tab ) it offers a variety of options to enhance the image. It seems to be doubling up OR ... my question is , can I import the file directly into Elements 11 & work on it without using Adobe Camera Raw ?
    Thank You

    Classic Directories

Thank you for your reply, I use Adobe Camera Raw to edit most of my photos & then convert to tif. I bought a book called " The Photoshop Elements Book " with tutorials for Elements 11 wich seems to confuse. I have sucessfully imported raw files directly into Elements 11 & worked on them. By doubling up, I meant how much work should I do in Adobe Camera Raw, as it seems everything you need to edit/enhance/convert is in Elements 11.

  • Raw file edited in Lightroom don't show edited in PSE

I have edited pictures taken in raw format in Lightroom, and imported them later in pse 7. When I import them, they are not edited, but the original file.
How do I make PSE read the edited information instead?
    Thanks in advance
    Kanolsen

Thanks for a very quick reply, and congratulations with passing 1000 postings!
I tested it again, and I upgraded to LR 2.4 today, and it didn't create an .xmp file. I found this article which makes LR create an .xmp file. Now PSE can see the changes I've made in LR.
I tried to install Adobe Camera Raw 5.4, but got an error message "Photoshop Camera Raw (64bit), Can not install. Click cancel". I have camera raw 4.5 and I don't have a 64bit system. I can't find any 5.4 for 32bit system?
I didn't see any edits I had previously done in Lightroom in PSE's organizer, nor did the raw file have any modified timestamp.
I really like PSE organizer for tagging pictures so I find them easily, and I have gotten used to Lightroom for editing my files after I got more interested in taking pictures, LR is a lot easier to quickly modifying a lot of pictures compared to PSE where you have to open editor for each and every picture (making sure I can't be bothered fixing up the pics). So my workflow is to import to LR and modifying the pictures to my liking, and then importing them in PSE organizer for looking at them later. I don't use LR for looking at pictures later on. Is that an OK way of doing it, or is there an easier way?
Perhaps I should import as .DNG file to reduce the dependency on the .xmp file?
Thanks again for a quick reply, I have been slower to reply as I had to check and recheck what was happening.

  • How do I transfer my RAW lightroom4 edits into Photoshop CS4? (with LR edits)

I know how to "edit in" Photoshop... but, ever since my upgrade to LR4, the file transfers un-edited. In LR3 it would transfer with the LR adjustments.  HELP!

Thank you!! You saved the day!!  Why is it doing this? Is it because I don't have Camera RAW 7.3?  My understanding is that I can't update to 7.3.... Thoughts?
    Thank you for your time!!

  • Help render the raw files edited with camera raw how?

    Hi
    i have a problem
i use  bridge cs5 (updated) to browse my raw files
often i open my raw files with camera raw inside bridge cs5 and make some corrections like exposure , saturation , contrast and so on
but after bridge doesn't re-render the files
i mean the thumbs ,previews , the slideshow still are in default setting
when i click and open with camera raw inside bridge or with photoshop cs5 ,the raw files look with corretions
but again bridge show me not with the corrections
    i run under w7 32bit
    what could be the problem?
    thanks

    mantralightroom wrote:
i see previews and thumbs with the edits but with a big delay
    thanks
If you are using HQ On Demand you will get fast thumbnails, but there will be a delay in generating the preview as Bridge builds it.
The Always HQ takes more space, but faster as the data is already in cache.
    Hope this helps.

  • Aperture RAW file compatibility

    Hi there guys.
I've been considering Aperture2 for quite sometime now but am disappointed to find out that there is no RAW support for my camera, a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ-28. The closest support is for an older FZ-50 instead while my camera is newer than this.
With that, I would like to know what my options are with regards to importing the RAW files from my camera to Aperture2 should I decide to pull the trigger and get it.
    Thanks ahead.

    A couple comments,
RAW is overrated for small-sensor Digitals like your Lumix. If you shoot in .jpg and use aperture for light editing and organization, you'll probably see an advantage over what you're currently doing. The fact that aperture's ads talk so much about raw is irrelevant, you can do anything it does (other than raw conversion, obviously) with a jpg. The only difference is that you have less control over the raw conversion, which your camera bight do better than aperture (it's a matter of taste at that point, not science).
Or, you could get a better camera, i.e., a nikon or canon that is actually going to be supported as soon as possible and has decades of history of making good cameras.

  • Unable to open RAW files after reinstalling Photoshop CS4

I recently did a system recovery to my computer due to downgrading to Windows 7; however, after I installed Design Premium back to my PC, I am not able to open RAW files in Photoshop. It prompted "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I tried to check for Photoshop updates but no updates are available. I tried re-installing Design Premium but the issue still persists.
My system configuration is as follows:
Windows 7 Professional x64 (Yet to install Service Pack 1, but I don't think that really matters)
Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium (Photoshop Version 11.0)
Canon EOS 50D (Firmware Version 1.08)
Anyone may have a clue on how to fix that? Thanks a lot!
    Screenshot as follows:

When you reinstalled CS4, you  went back to the original release.
Now you must apply all the updates to Photoshop and to  Adobe Camera Raw manually.
You cannot rely on the Adobe auto updater to tell you that you are up to date.  That updater was broken for years and years, and that was and is certainly the case with CS4.
Adobe didn't get their updater act together until CS6.
You also have to update the ACR plug-in manually.

  • I can't open Nikon D800.nef (raw) files in my Photoshop CS6 (64 bit), however, I can open .jpg files

I just purchased and installed Photoshop CS6 (64 bit) to use with my Nikon D800.  However, I can't open the .nef (raw) files but the .jpg files from the same camera will open.  What do I need to do to open .nef files from the D800?

Hello! By default, Photoshop CS6 cannot open the NEF from a D800, you need to have at least Camera Raw 7.1, as explained in this document: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
Go to the Help menu, and select "updates" and you'll launch the Adobe Updater that should suggest to install Camera Raw 7.2 that supports the D800, and many other cameras.
